California's tournament calendar is spread across the whole state rather than one city. Los Angeles and San Diego host the most events, followed by San Jose and Sacramento, with Fullerton, Emeryville, Orange, Murrieta, Fresno and Riverside also regular hosts.
Grappling Industries runs recurring events in San Diego and Sacramento, and San Diego also hosts the ABJJC San Diego Open, the Tap Cancer Out San Diego BJJ Open and NAGA's San Diego Grappling Championship. Other active organisers include Grappling X, United Grappling Championship, NABJJF, Tournaments Together, CompNet California and Dream Jiu Jitsu.
Gi divisions are slightly more common than No-Gi, and around one in four events runs kids divisions. House rules and IBJJF rules are both widely used, with double elimination a common format. Adult entry typically costs around $29–$105. November is the busiest month, followed by October, August and September.
