BJJ Tournaments — FAQ

How do I enter a BJJ tournament?

Find an upcoming event above and open its tournament page for the registration link, divisions and organiser details. You'll usually sign up on the organiser's site and confirm your belt level, weight category, and whether you're entering Gi, No-Gi or both. New to competing? Our guide to competing in BJJ walks you through your first time.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ?

Gi (or "kimono") BJJ is competed in a traditional uniform and allows grips on the jacket and trousers. No-Gi is competed in shorts and a rash guard, with no collar or lapel grips. Many events run both, and you can often enter each division separately. We break down the tactical and stylistic differences in Gi vs No-Gi BJJ.

How much does it cost to enter a tournament?

Entry fees vary by event, division, and how early you register — many organisers offer early-bird pricing. Rather than quote a figure that quickly goes out of date, we link straight to each organiser: open the tournament's detail page above for its current entry fee and registration link.

How far in advance are BJJ tournaments announced?

Most events are announced 6–12 weeks before the date. Major international tournaments (like the IBJJF Worlds) are announced months ahead, while smaller local comps may only give 3–4 weeks' notice. We update listings daily, so check the tournament pages above regularly for newly added events.

Can beginners compete in BJJ tournaments?

Absolutely. Most tournaments have a white belt or novice division specifically for beginners, and coaches widely encourage competing early — even one comp teaches you more than months of drilling. Check an event's detail page for its beginner divisions, and read our first-time competitor's guide before you sign up.
