Incredible Jiu Jitsu school and community. I've trained at many Jiu Jitsu gyms over the years and this is definitely one of the best. The head instructor, Sam, has an amazing attitude and is an excellent teacher. All students are respectful, kind, and careful. Very welcoming community, always open to new people. The higher level belts always help out the white belts and blue belts. If you're looking for a place to do Jiu Jitsu, and you're in/near Atlanta, this is the place.

I was in the area for work and emailed Coach Sam. He was awesome and invited me in for a NoGi class. The entire group was accommodating and I felt like I was at my home gym the second I walked in. There were people of all belt levels so the rolls were fun. I hope I end up back in the area so I can stop by again. Thanks Coach Sam and team! *There was a small Mat fee for the day and a waiver.

Buckhead JJ has been my home for 7 years. All ages, belts, and skill levels are represented at each class and there is a certainly a comradery throughout the gym that can only be achieved through a healthy but competitive respect for your classmates. Head coach Sam Joseph is clearly a great jiujitsu player, but you find out quickly that he is an even better coach and friend. Sam puts jiu-jitsu into a perspective that allows the sport to positively benefit your life both on and off the mats, regardless of whether you are a hobbyist or full time competitor. "Jiu-jitsu is a part of life, not vice versa." If you are interested in sport jiu-jitsu, self defense, or just want to get in better shape, stop by Buckhead JJ and see what it's all about!

Can't recommend Buckhead Jiu Jitsu enough. If you're looking to try out grappling for self-defense or a new hobby, you won't find a more welcoming place to do it. Sam, the owner and head instructor, will make time to make sure you get answers to any questions you may have about techniques, philosophies or strategies. Whether you're a competitive grappler looking to take your ground game to the highest level or a casual hobbyist, Buckhead Jiu Jitsu is a great place to train.

I have been going to Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu for close to six years. The qualities that brought me to Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu have kept me there: Sam Joseph and the outstanding gym culture. Sam is a great professor. His level of jiu-jitsu knowledge and technical expertise is incredible. I appreciate how Sam is able to break down positions in an easy-to-understand manner. I learn something new every time I go. The gym culture is inviting and inclusive. Any given class on any given day will be full of individuals who are trying to improve themselves and others. You can spar with a high level of intensity or dial it down if you’d like. Sam ensures his students are thinking of the safety of their training partner. I recently took advantage of the lifetime membership option Sam offered existing members. Easiest and best decision I’ve made on my jiu-jitsu journey.

The owner Sam is one of the most friendly guys I’ve ever met and truly has a heart of gold. He’s always looking out for his students and has been an integral part of my understanding of BJJ. The gym is super inviting and theres very litte ego in the gym if any at all. All levels are welcome in the gym, from newbies like me all the way to advanced belts. The mat is cleaned after every class and the bathrooms seem to be cleaned every night. If you’re looking to get in shape or just try something new this is absolutely the best place to do it.

I've been training here for over seven years! The instruction and environment are excellent. Sam works hard to make sure everyone feels welcome and supported. He has created some fierce competitors, but he's just as invested in the hobbyists who have no intention of ever competing. The mats are also kept very clean - this is important! The mats get sprayed and mopped after every class. Buckhead Jiu Jitsu really embodies the idea that Jiu Jitsu is for everyone!

I am so fortunate to have found Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu. This is by far the best gym for BJJ in Atlanta for so many reasons. Samuel Joseph, the head instructor, is so warm and welcoming that you feel comfortable immediately. The studio pairs the seriousness of hard work, discipline, and grit required of any martial art such as jiu-jitsu with the lightness and warmth of family and friends. It is an exceptional place to train, with a very special culture. It is rare to come across any business with clients as loyal as Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu, and that is thanks to the tireless efforts of Sam and all those involved. I always leave class energized, inspired, and grateful and hope that if you're reading this review that you will come on Saturday morning to try out the intro BJJ class. I can guarantee that you will not regret it. Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu, almost overnight, transformed my conception of the sport and my involvement in it from a dabbling hobby to a lifelong endeavor to improve, compete, and one day receive my black belt. Thank you Sam and everyone at Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu in Atlanta for being such a positive influence on my life!

Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu has been a warm, welcoming Jiujitsu gym for my whole family. The kids class is a fantastic place for kids to learn anti-bullying, develop self confidence, and get a good workout. The head coach (Sam) has a fun, no-nonsense approach which builds discipline. For adults, there are both serious competitors winning championships in the gym, and a welcome atmosphere for hobbyists and women. I have trained at several different martial arts gyms in Atlanta, and really appreciate the humble, low-key atmosphere Sam nurtures. As a woman, it can be difficult to find a comfortable place to learn a martial art; Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu is one of the good ones.

Outstanding coaching and community! I started training at Buckhead Jiu Jitsu in my early 40s with zero prior experience wrestling or other martial arts. Sam's infectious enthusiasm, encouragement, and respect for everyone (no matter their skill level) sets the tone for entire gym. All of the coaches are super-knowledgeable and willing to answer questions, give advise, and are all around friendly and helpful. Same goes for all of the upper belts. My introduction to some of the best people I've met in Atlanta came through Buckhead Jiu Jitsu. Honestly, the community is so great, I would probably still pay the membership dues just hang out with these people regularly. The community remains very diverse; there are serious competitors who have won at the highest levels of competition, folks who just enjoy learning the techniques and trying them in class, men, women, and all ages are here and helping each other learn a very difficult martial art. To wrap up, no matter your age or background, you won't find a better place to train BJJ than Buckhead Jiu Jitsu.

So far, I have enjoyed my experience at BJJ. You do not need to be a fan of the sport to practice. Contrary to popular belief, Jiu-Jitsu transcends simply being a sport. Sure, It is great exercise, but it also teaches a new discipline that has the potential to impact your life on multiple levels: physical, social, intellectual, and emotional. The せんせい and his fellow students make you feel welcome and are very willing to help you improve your technique. Overall, I would recommend giving BJJ a try. Take a chance, you might like it, and eventually come to love it.

I just realized I have yet to add a review for this place. I love this place and Sam is one of the best there is I actually met him when I started training years ago at Creighton MMA but even then Sam was a very positive and Passionate Coach. His gym and members grows every time I check in and even if I miss time at the gym I am always welcomed back with open arms which is a great feeling. One I have never received from other places and I honestly believe it has a lot to do with the Owners/Coach as well as fellow floor partners yes, but it honestly feels like a Family. I can't wait for me to get a schedule together so I can consistently go back but there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about Sam and the BJJ Family I have made. I’ve been to a handful of gyms in the metro area and know firsthand that heading through the doors of any martial arts gym for the first time as a new guy/gal is one of the most humbling things someone can do. Immediately after walking in to Buckhead Jiu Jitsu, Sam greeted me by name with a huge contagious smile and a handshake, then showed me around and asked if I needed anything. I left my first class (exhausted and shaking) with some new moves, new friends and a lot of weird bruises that were difficult to explain to my girlfriend. If you’re looking for a place to shake hands with a stranger, try to choke the life out of each other for thirty minutes, then hug it out after as friends - this is the place to do it. Most welcoming gym I’ve ever stepped foot in and would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Been training at Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu for a little under two years. Great instruction and camaraderie. Sam is really the main reason for the academy's growth and why I attend. There are other academies closer to my home, but I choose to go to Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu. No "bow to your sensei" BS. Diverse student body: men and women, all ages, colors, skill levels, body types, and reasons for attending (competition/hobby/self defense). Rarely are there tough-guy-bros trying to prove something, and they don't stick around long. Pretty much everyone is friendly and helpful. Visually not the prettiest, but you're there to train and sweat, not admire architecture and interior décor. Rarely do students leave to join other academies, but plenty of other academies have students decide to join Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu.

I have been around Buckhead Jiujitsu a little less than a year and am a transplant from another BJJ school. The coach is friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and highly attentive to the individual students needs. The student body is highly diverse containing people who are amped up about competing in grappling to people who are more laid back and just there to learn a skill, generally they are all very pleasant people. The academy's premises are well maintained and clean, although due to the amount of students training, during the most crowded of times the amount of mat space can get pretty tight. All and all I cannot recommend this place enough.

I have been training here for over a year now and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Sam Joseph has created a very supportive team atmosphere where anyone can train hard and safely. Sam keeps the mats and facility very clean and there is ample parking. Sam teaches in a way that anyone can understand techniques by braking them down into simple parts and explaining why you do things a certain way. He allows students to ask questions and never makes anyone feel bad for asking a question or not getting a technique quickly. Sam has friendly connections to a lot of people in the BJJ community and we have had many visitors drop in and train with us from all over (California, New York, Dominican Republic), as well as local academies such as Creighton MMA in Suwanee and Helix BJJ in Snellville). If you are not interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, check out his Fit in 45 circuit training class. We use battle ropes, kettle bells, medicine balls, etc. and have fun while training hard.

After one month, I already feel much more confident in my ability to defend myself against anyone, regardless of size. I've enjoyed the fitness classes as well and look forward to continuing with the Buckhead Jiu Jitsu community as long as I am in Atlanta!

Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu is the best. Samuel is an excellent teacher and makes sure that we get all the little details right which makes such a huge difference. On top of that, the atmosphere is very friendly and open. Everyone helps each other out to make them better.

If you are looking to acquire a martial art/self defense skill look no further - Buckhead BJJ is more than just a work-out gym, it's a community of like minded people from all walks of life. I am brand new to Jiu Jitsu and found Buckhead BJJ after researching and visiting other jiu jitsu places. I like Buckhead BJJ and Samuel Joseph the best, the training is great and very useful for self-defense - being that I am girl that is important to me. The more advanced students are always around and willing to help and assist newbies like myself and Sam himself keeps a watchful eye so that no one gets hurt during training. After checking out different schools in Dunwoody and surrounding areas, I give Buckhead BJJ the thumbs up. -M.Huetter

I just want to say how much I love training with Professor Samuel. He has great passion in teaching jiu jitsu as well as helping his students get to the next level. He teaches proper technique and encourages camaraderie. I recommend people to stop by and take his class. Not only he is a great teacher but a great guy!
