I’ve been a loyal member of the Valparaiso YMCA for over five years and have coached multiple teams in their youth sports program, dedicating countless hours to volunteering and supporting the community. My three kids are also enrolled here, so this place has been a big part of our lives. However, my recent experience was so appalling that I canceled my membership. While working out, with only 20 minutes left until closing, a staff member interrupted my set to tell me I had to leave because of my shoes—Yeezy foam runners. I’ve worn these shoes to the gym multiple times without issue, and I’ve seen high school kids wearing Crocs and other non-compliant footwear like “potato shoes” with no repercussions. When I spoke to the director, they confirmed my shoes were appropriate, making the incident even more frustrating. The staff member claimed their manager instructed them to ask me to leave, yet the manager never appeared—not even when I canceled my membership on the spot. It felt like the employee was just trying to rush me out to close early, showing a complete lack of professionalism. As a 30-year-old father and dedicated volunteer, I felt discriminated against and treated like dirt, especially when teenagers routinely violate the same policy without consequence. To make matters worse, I never received a follow-up call or apology from the YMCA. This experience has shattered my trust in an organization I once valued. I cannot recommend this YMCA to anyone after such a disrespectful and poorly handled situation.
Posted 9 months agoThird YMCA I’ve been to in the last three weeks. Thanks to my grandchildren. They are getting me in shape to be able to hang around a bit longer. Love the more. But really enjoyed the Valpo Y. The staff and the facility both.
Posted 7 months agoLove the track, sauna, and available classes. I’m eager to try the Pilates class with reformers. The whirlpool is sort of gross a lot of the time and the shower floors could stand some scrubbing, but overall I’m a fan of the Y.
Posted 1 year agoThe dance fitness classes are great. I’ve always had a good experience with the gym staff and members being friendly. The nurse Christy is so sweet. She helped my daughter when she smashed her finger in the car door as we had gotten there one day. It was pretty bad - I went in to get some paper towel or something for the blood and the kind people at the front desk ended up calling the nurse to help us.
Posted 10 months agoI am writing this review for my mom. She is a member of the ymca and she attends the swim class for arthritis. I like the fact that she is able to go and socialize with the people she has made friends with there. For many of the people in her age group, this is the highlight of their weeks. However, she and the others in her arthritis class, have mentioned many, many times that the water is cold. From what I understand, the water should be warm for an arthritis class and kept at a certain temperature. I wish the ymca would be more accommodating to these members because from what my mom has told me, the members in her class and age group feel like their concerns are unaddressed by the staff. Update: The pool is too cold for the arthritis class. This was mentioned to the lifeguard again, and he said they are waiting for a part for the heater. The pool needs to be warm for arthritis classes! The ymca staff should know. July 7, 2025 The water is still COLD this week. Perhaps week 3 of this? The ymca needs to do better. The water needs to be warm for an arthritis class.
