I started training grappling for the first time at Mathouse in September 2025, and it’s been such an amazing experience. From day one, Dom and Connor were incredibly welcoming, supportive, and fantastic coaches. Also having them in my corner during my competitions meant a lot, and I’m very grateful for everything they’ve done. The facilities are excellent with Zebra mats, but the best part is the people. Everyone is respectful, friendly, and eager to learn. I highly recommend Mathouse to anyone looking to get into grappling or BJJ. Again thank you for the awesome experience!
Great facilities, dropped in here for an evening session. Excellent level and very friendly. I'd really recommend it to anyone. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone. Exactly what I love about BJJ.
IF YOUR IN READING AND HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT STARTING JIU JITSU , LOOK NO FURTHER!!!! I joined mathouse in January 2020, I did the beginners course, and fell in love with jiu jitsu instantly. Since joining mathouse I gave up any training that wasn’t jiu jitsu. At mathouse I’ve made life long friends which starting at 36 , I wasn’t looking for . All the coaches are great ,each offering a different perspective of training. I’ve been training 6 years at mathouse and there is not one person I dislike. All walks of like , race and religion are welcome and will become your teammates . I’m writing this review as my last week training in mathouse(as I am returning home to live for good) I love mathouse and it has a massive piece of my heart. I will miss everyone , thanks to Dom for building this amazing club. I will definitely be back to catch up as this is not just a club it’s my second home.
Lots of green flags. I’ve trained at many academies over the years due to travelling for work, and recently attended a trial class here. The facility is a really cool and unique space, and it was immaculately clean throughout. The mat area is excellent, the class was well structured, the instructor was knowledgeable, and there was a good standard of training partners on the mats. There is a well-stocked shop selling training kit, and the shower facilities upstairs were also spotless. Proper gym etiquette was adhered to, which is always a positive sign. I would happily recommend this academy to both complete beginners and serious competitors. In my experience, it’s about as safe, clean, and professionally run as they come. There are also plenty of flexible membership options to suit different levels of commitment. You can really see the thought, effort, and care that has gone into creating the academy, which was refreshing to see. I hope I’m back in Reading again soon so I can train there.
I decided to join the beginners course, followed by the free trial. I was hoping for a detailed and measured introduction to BJJ and that’s exactly what I found at Mathouse. I was instantly made to feel welcome and encouraged to put in my best effort. The coaching staff are ever present and on hand to guide you through every aspect. They clearly have incredible experience and knowledge and want to see you succeed. The facilities are immaculate. And I mean spotless! The standards at Mathouse are obviously very high. Following this flawless introduction, I have immediately signed up to one of their membership options, which also included a new GI thrown in on a spring promotion! I am delighted by this start. I have been thinking of giving BJJ a go for a long time now. And felt a little apprehensive about jumping in. I feel lucky I found Mathouse and would highly recommend them to anyone who feels like BJJ could be for them. Give it a go!
Joined Mathouse 7 months ago, first time in BJJ. Incredible journey so far; everyone is very professional and experienced, providing valuable lessons not only about BJJ but also about life in general. I wish I had more time to enjoy this every day! p.s. My daughter can't wait to join kids' sessions too.
Fantastic experience here, booked a trial session and loved it! The venue is spacious, clean and well managed with a slick website and onboarding process. Instructors are welcoming, informative and supportive. It has a real team vibe here with the other members of the class showing patience with a novice like me and giving me tips along the way. The structure of the class provides in depth tuition of the techniques and a chance to practice them followed by sparring which was so much fun and a great workout! I’ll definitely be back again when my aging body has recovered, highly recommend Dom’s Mathouse to anyone interested in BJJ. 5 stars all round!
Posted 1 year agoFantastic gym, coaches and a great community that makes you feel very welcome. Spotlessly clean and safe environment to train in. Space is large and well set up for BJJ and other classes. Lots of sessions on offer for training throughout the week. Everyone at the club is extremely welcoming and friendly. I was unsure about attending mixed level classes but the positive environment created by everyone makes it a great place to progress.
Posted 2 years agoAn exceptional training environment with great instruction and a great community. I started BJJ at this gym with the beginner's course and have loved training here ever since. I have had the opportunity to train at several other gyms, and I can confidently say that Mathouse stands out above the rest in terms of quality of instruction, punctuality of classes, hygiene, teammates looking after one another, and white belts not spazzing out.
Posted 3 years agoTL;DR - incredible gym, incredible coaching, incredible culture. The standout experience for me at mathouse was when Dom told me “hey, this is your house too”. That’s the most perfect way I can sum up the culture of the school. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started BJJ, but what I found was beyond what I could have hoped; Dom has created a great atmosphere full of students that are welcoming to new starters, with a sincerely collaborative and friendly environment. Whether a competition hopeful or a hobbyist, you will receive truly excellent instruction that will help you advance in the sport. Dom’s instruction is perfect and easy to follow, breaking down concepts into simple steps and allowing you to string them together under supervision. The culture is friendly to new starters beyond anything I’ve experienced in any other sport or club. To put it simply, if you’re not there to train well and look after your teammates, I don’t think you’ll do well at Mathouse, otherwise, you’ll get on great :) I’ve been attending for under a year and can happily say I’m not looking back. Dom demonstrates discipline in a way that is constructive and never ‘over the top’ that you sometimes hear of nightmare gyms. You can tell that he truly wants his students to succeed, and that’s also evident in the excellent instruction received from Zach, who occasionally takes classes. Classes are informative, with someone always on hand to help monitor and correct technique. Sparring is fun and safe. Overall, I would 100% recommend this BJJ school. Honestly I’ve never enjoyed a contact sport so much.
Posted 4 years agoI trained at Mathouse for a few months after relocating to Reading. It's a really great club and Dom should be very proud of what he's achieved both in terms of a high quality training environment and club ethos. The space is generous, spotlessly clean and well set up for BJJ and another grappling sports. Dom's instruction is clear and insightful. The real standout for me however, is that Dom is far more involved with his students than many other gyms I've trained. I think this helps foster a very welcoming and non-cliquey atmosphere. And also he's more aware of where you are on your BJJ journey. Get down there!
