Best gym I've ever been a part of. Its worth every cent. Watch out for CJ, he has some weird type of extendo-arm reach
Posted 9 months agoStarted at The Cellar about a year ago and had to quit recently due to a non-gym related injury. Joining a new gym can be intimidating but the coaches (and other members) do a great job of maintaining a respectful, welcoming atmosphere and giving helpful advice. The gym itself is clean and the class structure makes it a great place for people of all skill levels. I highly recommend this gym and can’t wait to return.
Posted 10 months agoOut-of-towner here: visited The Cellar Gym for an early-morning no-gi class and loved it. Excellent instruction and balance between warm-ups, drilling, and rolling. The regulars were challenging yet welcoming––no attitudes and not overly aggressive (much appreciated when, like me, you're 57 years old). :) In short: highly recommended for visitors to the Twin Cities area!
Posted 1 year agoThe cellar is a great gym for all levels. The things I like most about the cellar are the following: 1. It has great structure classes always start and end in time. 2. There's a large variety of classes. 3. It's ego free, everyone is very friendly. 4. The entire room works hard which is motivating to keep going. 5. It's very clean. I would recommend the cellar to anyone that's looking for a fun way to get in shape, stay in shape or for something more.
Posted 1 year agoI contacted the gym about joining one of their weekend sparring classes. The staff and coaches were extremely friendly and very inviting. The class was a lot of fun and coach Ben was very knowledgeable and easy to learn from. The community of the gym was very impressive with their striking experience, and I felt I had made a few friends within the hour I had been there. I will be back to train there again!
I’ve been attending classes here for many years and cannot say enough good things about this gym. The staff, students, instructors, atmosphere, etc. are top notch and so inviting. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to improve their lives.
The Cellar Gym is amazing. I wasn't sure what to expect coming in - I honestly was a little nervous. But as soon as I walked in, I was welcomed by some of the friendliest people I have met. Everyone did what they could to help get me ready for class. The coaches are so helpful and understanding. And they took the time to learn my name (which seems like a small thing, but that's a big deal for me). I have so much fun in class, and I can already see the improvement from when I first started!
Cellar gym is a great place to train and build confidence. The coaches are consistently helpful and knowledgeable about their training and care for their team. If you’re looking for a challenge sign up and get to work :)
Love this gym. The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive. The instructors are ACE- so knowledgeable and encouraging. I did the fitness kickboxing and it's such a great short sharp workout- always feeling POWERful afterwards. Couldn't recommend this gym highly enough
Thank you for the hospitality at your gym. It was very fun to join in on a couple of BJJ classes run by the very skilled and knowledgeable teacher Dave!
The cellar has been my home muay thai gym for years. Great teammates and a welcoming atmosphere! If you're just starting out or looking for competition training the Cellar is an excellent option.
The Celllar is the best! Tons of classes at different times is very accommodating for different work schedules, highly experienced coaches, and state of the art equipment makes for a ideal training experience.
I went to the women’s jiu jitsu class recently and was nervous since I have never gone before. Everyone in the class was welcoming, there was absolutely no judgment and the instructor was very helpful.
The cellar is a great gym! great coaches and athletes are part of the it! You have mma classes for begginers and advanced! which is great! Bjj is very good also, Professor Dave is great, very technical class! also, and they have a very nice focus on kids!!! totally recommend the gym! the facility is great! hope to be back soon
Great gym! Teen program is fantastic. The coaches are all very talented and knowledgeable.
Great facility. Clean, well organized and friendly staff / instructors. BJJ group is truly amazing. Welcoming, encouraging, and challenging. I highly recommend The Cellar Gym to anyone!!
After spending a couple years bouncing between different types of gyms and programs, joining the Cellar has given me an renewed commitment to fitness. Coaching staff are friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. The array of available class times also set it apart from any other martial arts gyms in the area.
My family has been participating at this gym for almost three years now, and the improvement my kids have made is unbelievable! I can’t say enough about the coaches! They are the best in the business! Truly a second family kind of feel! ♥️♥️💪🏽💪🏽
This has been my second home for the last several years! If you are having doubts just give it a try! We have all been there and it takes a lot of courage to try something new but it is so worth it! I started just because I wanted to find a way to exercise that was less boring than running on a treadmill and now, I am a part of the fight team and have rooted myself in an amazing community that has helped me not just physically but socially and emotionally. The coaches are amazing and willing to go out of their way and sacrifice their time to help you. They have a great kids program with amazing caring coaches. I don't know what I could do without this gym. Whether you want to join for mental or physical health reasons or compete at the highest level this is the gym for you!
Recently, I completed the 6 week challenge, which gave me the motivation to come back and start attending classes again. For the challenge we were to attend kickboxing classes 3 times a week. Originally I was signed up for Muay Thai, as I found it to be an interesting art, but after the challenge, I found I enjoyed the kickboxing a lot and signed up for that instead. I was worried about finding time to attend, but they have so many classes on their schedule that I can always find a class that matches my schedule, no matter how much my schedule changes week to week. While I worked the fair, I was able to attend morning classes. When I went back to my normal work schedule they had a class almost every night of the week. The coaches are absolutely phenomenal. Being that there are so many classes, there are also a few coaches, and they all teach their classes differently, while still changing it up from class to class. Not only are you getting a satisfying workout, but you are getting a variety that promises you'll never get bored. As for the people, they are all very friendly. Although I attend classes alone, there is always somebody to practice with. Often we end up pairing up, and if you didn't bring a friend you'll have to make a new friend. I have not had one bad experience with all of the people I have worked with. As great as a place is, if the people aren't friendly, then it basically becomes a chore to attend. I actually find myself looking forward to attending classes and meeting new people. Overall, I would highly recommend taking a look at this gym. The classes are great and flexible; the coaches are knowledgeable and helpful; and the people are extremely friendly. UPDATE 9/4/19- 11 months later and I still find myself getting excited to attend classes everyday. In fact, sometimes I dread holidays or vacations due to the classes I'd have to miss. I've started many hobbies and quit after a month or two because I was bored or just didn't feel like I belonged. Here I feel like everyone is so inclusive and welcoming. I've expanded from kickboxing and Muay Thai into Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and am loving it just as much as the other two. Unfortunately, this does mean I do have to cut back on one of the other two in order to participate, but that's what I get for wanting to try everything. One important thing to note is that The Cellar is not just for the combatants looking to get into the or improve their fighting prowess. Yes, if that is what you're looking for, this place is amazing, but for an average Joe, Jill or whoever, this is a good place to meet new friends and get in a fun workout. Update 1/10/2024- 5 years later and still going! The gym has gone through some changes. - There is a new location in a much easier location within the Rosedale Commons. The space is much larger and gives us a ton of room to play in. - The new owners aren't new to the gym and have been part of the infrastructure for longer than I have been a member. They are doing an amazing job and have adapted to the post COVID world with some welcome changes - We have new coaches in the mix with the ones we have before and that has provided even more opportunity for all of us to learn and grow. I have been sticking to the "Average Joe" aspect of training. Although I have gone back to Muay Thai only, I am continuing to have a ton of fun while staying active. I still get to meet new people from all walks of life and learn from some of the most amazing people. I cannot recommend this gym enough.
I wanted to train Muay Thai for a while. I have completed my first five classes. The gym facility is exceptional. The classes are what I wanted: challenging! The coaches/trainers keep the class moving, are helpful and clear in their instructions. I did an initial trial membership which helped me determine if The Cellar would be a good fit. I appreciate there are a lot of different classes available at different times.
First week here was amazing! Everyone is super friendly and made getting into something new very welcoming.
Great gym , great people ,great experience couldn't recommend it enough! And wouldn't recommend something else.
Big gym, very clean, polite and respectful staff (very enthusiastic and willing to help), and a great learning environment for anyone from beginner to pro. All the members ive talked to have been very nice and welcoming.
Good place, good people, and a consistent commitment to self improvement through the use of martial arts.
This is one of my all time favorite gyms. The caliber of people they have brought to the area is amazing. Been to many seminars conducted here always a splendid experience. The staff here are always positive and pro active in your martial arts. Highly recommend The Celler. Thank you Chris and Jen.
I visited today for an open house where they taught a self defense class. I was feeling quite self conscious about how out of shape I currently am but the instructors were very welcoming and encouraging. Might be signing up for a class pack! We would be members if it were closer to our home (not 30 minutes away). My son and I have taken classes at its old location in St Anthony. Its "new" location is more convenient off Hwy 36 near Rosedale Mall.
Took a bjj class and the place was great, people are nice, the mats were clean and had no bad wrestling room smell.
The Cellar is a great gym with awesome instructors! Coach Bobby is passionate and has the most fun/hard/entertaining classes!!
Great place and great people. Haven’t been there for a few years due to school but I’m going back!
I started working out at The Cellar gym recently. Day 2 there people knew my name, were willing to show me new things, an helped push me. My first day of BJJ I was pushed until I got sick... a couple times.. I felt like I let the guys down, at the end of class I apologized. They lifted my spirits by telling me they couldn't have asked for harder work. I'm all in!
I absolutely love The Cellar! I’ve only been at the gym since February but it feels like so much longer. Coach Chris and Coach Bobby are amazing, my classmates are great, and the gym honestly feels like home. The Cellar Gym has become the source of my strength, confidence, and a reminder that you can have fun and work hard at something new!
I’ve been working with coach Bobby Lee and he is truly great at what he does. I always feel included and coached while enjoying a nothing but positive atmosphere. I can honestly say this membership is the most worthwhile investment I’ve ever made. Every time I leave, it’s with the feeling that I can accomplish anything. The benefits of this gym go beyond the physical gains, it’s genuinely helped my mental health.
Came into the gym with no previous experience and have been addicted ever since. All the coaches are great and take the time to make sure you are improving every single day. Especially enjoy the MMA classes with Bobby Lee, he is one the best coaches I’ve had in any sport.
Great youth program for MMA.
I love this place, the teachers are so nice and they aren’t too hard on us
The best MMA gym you will ever experience. The crew here is like a family. Its different than other gyms. The instructors and team mates here truly care, and the owners are some of the best people you will ever meet. Chris and Jen are phenomenal people and I could not speak higher of them. Unfortunately I was told by my doctors that I had to stop training, and I was done with contact sports, but the crew at Cellar is absolutely still my family. When you train here, you will get the most attentive and professional training the world can offer. You'll gain experience that will change your life, regardless if you want to compete or train for fun and health. You will not find a group of instructors more professional or caring than you will at the cellar. Whether you want a professional fighting careerht loss experience, or casual athletic fun, The Cellar is where you should be.
We are bringing our 3.5 year old for the toddler classes and we're having a LOT of fun. Thanks!
I’ve tried 5-6 Muay Thai gyms around the country and this place is currently tied for my absolute favorite (w/ Sitan in NYC). It’s clean and well run, with good classes for beginners to more advanced. These guys really have their stuff together. Anytime I’m in Minneapolis I’ll be back here, no question 👍
I haven't actually started training yet, but i went in therr today and met the lady that helps run the Mauy Thai classes (which is what im interested in). She was super helpful and answered all my questions. The gym looks amazing and im really excited to get back into a combat sport after years on doing nothing. I will write another review once the lady and i have started but first impressions are great and it looks like an awesome place to train. Im so stoked to get in there and learn a new skill and style after years of letting life dictate my time
Great gym, each instructor I met was knowledgeable, and friendly. The rest of the staff are friendly as well. It's a clean place, with plenty of equipment.
...Muay Thai I have been training here for over a year, I love the gym and staff. They you can always find an answer for anything related to your training. They are very hands on and want you to learn. Not one of those gyms that is more concerned with taking your money than they are teaching you. There is a class for everyone literally. -Rio
Great place for training martial arts
Love this gym. Great training. Great people.
Great friendly place. Fun and challenging workout. Recommend the fitness kickboxing classes. 😃
I had the privilege to learn under Mr. Chichon back in 2009 ish. He is one of th best striking coaches I've ever met... If my boss didn't tell me to quit I'd have continued training Years later, I'm back at the Cellar for BJJ classes and am absolutely loving it. The best BJJ classes I've taken in Minneapolis. I signed a year contract and am committed to staying as long as possible. Beyond black belt if my own martial arts school will Allow. Chris and his wife Jen own one of the best adult martial arts programs I've experienced
Awesome place with awesome people! Have been coming here for Muay Thai for a few months now, and couldn't recommend a better spot!
Every time I’ve attended class I leave feeling like it was worth it every time.
I completed a six week challenge and it was amazing. They gave me a customized nutrition plan, helped me stay accountable to my sleep and workout goals, and got me hooked on kickboxing. Not only do I feel (and look 💪😏) great, I learned something new pretty much every time. Every coach had something different to challenge and encourage me. I went from never ever doing kickboxing, to not wanting to go back to my old workout ways. The folks here are friendly- but not in a distracting way. I know there will always be another level to work toward, and supportive coaches to help me get there.
I have been taking classes at The Cellar for the past year and a half and I absolutely love this place! Such a wonderful community of coaches and members who welcome and support everyone. I had no prior martial arts experience before coming here. I had been primarily doing kickboxing but I started Muay Thai four months ago and it was the best decision ever! Totally recommend this gym to folks at all levels of martial arts. :)
I've been coming to the Cellar Gym in and off for the past few years and they are amazing! A great variety of classes from cardio kickboxing to muai thai and Brazilian jiu jitsu. They make it very comfortable for beginners to start with a selection of level courses and a great coaching team! Highly recommend checking this place out.
Chris has the best Muay Thai in the metro. I learned so much from his instruction and he has the most patience I have ever seen in a coach. The jiu-jitsu is great and always has a huge class size with plenty of partners to roll with.
TheCellar is an excellently-coached, fun gym where you can learn Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA. It has a solidly positive culture and the coaches give individual attention even in group classes. One thing they could improve: having showers on-site!
I only had about a month and a half of Kickboxing classes before I moved from my apartment to a different location. In that time I felt that I learned so much and got so strong. Every time I catch a look at my new muscle tone I wonder "Where did that come from?" The teachers were so informative and helpful and I really felt like I have gained some useful skills in a short time. If I ever move close-by again I would 100% go back.
You know you've had an amazing workout when you get up off the floor at the end of class after pushing through all the ab work you can possibly do--- and you have left your whole body sweat imprint on the floor. And so has everyone else! Whether you want to learn to fight or just punch something and pretend it is a coworker(for example) --this is the place!!!
Wonderful gym. Amazing coaches and a friendly inviting community
Best gym you will ever visit. Everyone is friendly, supportive and non judgmental. You can walk in there with a six pack or weighing 300 pounds, nobody will treat you different. Love this gym!
Very open and inviting way to get in shape. Fitness kickboxing here has been such a great motivator to stay healthy. The staff remembers your name and is cool and helpful to everyone.
My son does jiu jitsu at The Cellar and we have been so happy with it! The coaches are amazing, the facilities are well organized and clean, and the general environment is both encouraging and professional.
A friend invited me to a Saturday workout several months ago and I had a great time, so much so that I decided to do the 6 week challenge. This was my first experience with kickboxing so I don't have any other gyms to compare this one to, but I really don't think I would bother going anywhere else. All of the instructors here were incredibly helpful and always knew my name. I never felt embarrassed for not knowing how to do certain moves even in classes with very experienced fighters. I always felt that I had enough space to figure things out on my own but also received plenty of guidance from the instructors. Sometimes class only had 5 people in it and sometimes it was a packed house, but it was always a great workout and no two classes were the same. Truly a great gym and I look forward to going back in the future!
I did the 6 week challenge, and honestly I feel great! Lost 21 pounds learn some killer combos and workouts. I loved it and will be joining as a member asap!
Started with the 6-week challenge and decided to join after. Awesome coaches and staff, classss are great.
This place is amazing. I’ve unsuccessfully tried to lose weight on my own. I did the six week challenge here and well exceeded my goal. The instructors are very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants to have fun getting a GREAT exercise, fight professionally and anywhere in between.
The Cellar has been a solid choice in martial arts gyms in the Twin Cities area for the 6 years I've been a member there. The facilities are clean, the coaches are great at pushing you and there are various teaching styles to choose from in whichever art you're interested in. I recommend the gym for anyone looking to get in top physical shape while also having fun and learning about themselves through the discipline of martial arts!
I always feel welcome by the staff and other gym members at The Cellar. I feel my instructors are invested in making sure that I am doing my best and reaching my goals. I have been to other specialty gyms, and this is the only place where I feel included regardless of how good I am at the sport. I highly recommend this gym for anyone, whether you have done martial arts before or not. You will feel stronger and more confident after each class!
I’ve been training at this gym for about a year and a half and have loved every second of it. I recently decided to take part in the 6 Week Challenge and boy am I glad I did! I feel better than I have in a LONG time and they make it so easy by providing guidance every step along the way. 11/10 WOULD RECOMMENDthis gym and this challenge to everybody and anybody.
I recently completed a 6 week fitness challenge with nutrition, coaching support and kickboxing classes. my motivation was to reset to a healthier lifestyle and regain some discipline in how i approach diet and exercise. the coaches at the cellar took the time to push me to meet my goals in the gym, and hold myself accountable to the plan outside the gym. thanks to this program I'm well on my way to my weight loss goals and have improved my conditioning, fitness and diet drastically. the classes are something different every time, always challenging to all levels of experience. the instructors make sure to offer tips to improve form and prevent injury. I've enjoyed getting to meet some new faces, all very friendly and welcoming to new students. thanks especially to coaches Justin, Ben, Chris and Katie for challenging me and helping me achieve a healthier lifestyle!
This was the second boxing or martial arts school that I've tried out and it is by far the best so far. The facility is always clean and has a ton of space for their classes. I believe there's a new heavy bag room they'll be opening up soon as well. The staff members are all friendly and approachable and the coaches are top notch. I took most of my classes over the past 6 weeks with Ben and they were always challenging and fun! If you're at all interested in taking martial arts classes I'd highly recommend trying the Cellar out!
Amazing gym with excellent instructors and overall a great environment. Customer service is fantastic and everyone that trains there makes it feel like a family.
Relaxed, professional and helpful. The facilities are well maintained and clean, and the classes are challenging and fun. So far, this is my favorite gym- hands down.
Great gym with a strong BJJ program. Clean and friendly.
Just went for the first time. Definitely coming back. Good people and friendly vibe. Clean, lots of variety.
Been to a lot of gyms in a few states, and the Cellar is one of the best. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside ☺️
I was only a member of The Cellar for about 9 months, and only stopped going because I'm moving out of state. I love it there and I recommend it to people all the time. This is an email I wrote to the owners: Hey Chris and Jen, I just wanted to let you know how great of an experience I had at the Cellar over the last 9 months. If I wasn't moving out of state, I'd be a long term member for sure. I love the way your gym is a place where members can take their training seriously and work out as intensely as they want, while maintaining an atmosphere that is open and comfortable for all types of people, including a hack like me. I never once witnessed any acts of disrespect between members, or even any negative attitudes at all. It doesn't feel wishy washy or too soft either, though. Everyone takes it seriously, works really hard, and enjoys it. I think that says a lot about your leadership and the culture you've developed there. I believe that the quality of your coaching is absolutely top notch. Not only are you sticklers for technique (which I need), but I also received far more personalized coaching at the Cellar than I did at my previous thai boxing gyms. It was great to get specific instruction that responded to exactly what I was doing well and what I needed to fix. Anyway, I'll miss The Cellar a lot, and I hope I can find a new gym that's half as good as yours. Thanks for everything, Peter
Very humble, world-class kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors who actively compete and put their reputations on the line. Great environment where everyone feels welcome and encouraged. Beginners need not worry as there are programs available for those who want/need to start with the basics. The fight team is taking guys and girls to the next level competing locally, nationally, and internationally, and there are many skilled fighters to train with. Very happy to have landed here.
A great place whether you are looking for an exciting way to get in better shape, challenge yourself with something new and learn from them best. Lots of classes offered at convenient times (day or evening) and amazing, friendly instructors who have tons of experience and knowledge in Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ. Highly Recommended for anyone.
Jus went for my second day. I loved the muay thai class and kickboxin. After my trial is over im signing up.
