I have been training at Southside for about four months, and I have seen significant improvements in my overall performance and techniques. As a no-gi player, I appreciate that Southside offers the most no-gi classes in the city each week, which allows me to maximize my training opportunities. I enjoy being around intelligent and curious individuals who are eager to learn and tackle problems together. We consistently find ways to challenge and elevate each other’s skills. Additionally, dope music always plays in the background, creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Best of all, there is a strong sense of camaraderie at Southside. The coaches and fellow practitioners are incredibly supportive; they push you hard and stand by you, especially during competitions, until the very last second of every fight! Thank you Southside~
The best place to train in Minneapolis! Lots of individualized attention, lots of time to train and practice the moves of the day, and, most importantly, safe training partners with a great culture. I always make an effort to visit southside bjj when I’m in town and they make me feel like I’m family. You gotta go here if you’re a local!
Dropped in for a class while traveling and it was excellent. Great instruction, friendly environment, and good rolls 🤙
Great gym full of kind, skillful, passionate jiu jitsu players. Great gym for any upper or lower belt looking to improve. As someone who travels for work, I have trained at a dozen gyms but this one is something special.
I dropped in on a work trip and everyone was incredibly welcoming. They loaned me a gi. It's a small space but well-built and they use it effectively. Clean, private changing rooms. Would happily go back.
Australian traveling it was a very warm and supportive welcome to the community and city. Super technical teaching, look forward to going again 🙏
Such a cool place to train!!! If you’re ever in Minneapolis or live in Minneapolis, go down and check it out! Professor Enrique was nothing but welcoming and gave an awesome vibe! Thank you 🙏🏽
I dropped in to train during my work trip in Minneapolis and I have no regrets. Great training environment for all levels and the instructors are solid.
Brown belt visiting from Ca. I recently had the pleasure of training at Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I can confidently say it was an outstanding experience. From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed by a team of incredibly polite and respectful individuals who made me feel right at home. What truly sets Southside BJJ apart is the personal touch from the owner. Their dedication to the students' progress was evident when they took the time to check in with me the next day to ask about my experience. This level of care and commitment is rare and highly appreciated. Overall, Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers a perfect blend of rigorous training, technical expertise, and a welcoming community. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to improve their BJJ skills in a supportive and professional environment. Looking forward to my next trip to Minneapolis!
Really amazing. Top level technicians here everyone was welcoming and friendly. Rolls started light they will increase on your comfort so don’t hesitate to say something if you feel uncomfortable. Cabot recommend enough if you want to just drop in like I did or make it your school (which I would do in a heartbeat if I lived here). I wish the team all the best
Did a drop in class when I was visiting a customer on business. Professor was welcoming. Great gym and everyone was helpful, kind, and great rolls too! If you’re in town try this gym out. I will be back.
Great, solid team, warm welcome, clean, I recommend it for everyone, great place to learn!
Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is one of the best schools in Minneapolis! Coach Enrique and his instructors are incredibly welcoming, creating a fun and exciting atmosphere for the gym. On top of that, their wide-range of techniques and detailed instruction offers one to learn and advance very fast once here! It is clear that they truly have a passion for teaching from how they conduct themselves and deal with everyone around them. Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is definitely the most premier school in terms of technique, training, and atmosphere. When you're talking about this gym, you're talking about the Gold Standard of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gyms!
I’ve had an opportunity to train in a lot of dojos over the last 16 years and Southland BJJ definitely has a great environment and culture. Felt safe with everyone and had an opportunity to train with some of the colored belts. Very respectful and overall great people. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and looking to drop in for a class.
Southside is an outstanding bjj academy. Everyone is very welcoming and Coaches are extremley knowledgable and focus on helping each student with their individual needs. It is a great place for anyone regardless of if you are new to the sport or have tons of experience. I would 100% recommend giving it a try.
Excellent academy and instructors! Enrique, Adrián and Nick teach quality BJJ in a fresh, detailed and comprehensive way. Absolutely recommended.
Very nice and friendly place to train, close to the U and close to bus stops, different people to train with! good level of jiu jitsu! 100% recommended ❤️
Southside is a wonderful community of jujitsu practitioners. The professors meet the students where they are at and have real grasp on how to teach the techniques for the students. I’ve practiced a variety of martial arts at a few places, their approach to jujitsu seems to be pretty progressive and very well thought out
Great gym! He's very flexible with what you need and everyone is very friendly. There's a wide range of skill at this gym so it's a great place for anyone looking to continue or start their training. If you can't afford the rates, talk to him about it. He'll work with ya! Good luck!
I visited this school from out of town and felt right at home. Excellent instruction with fine tuned technique. Great rolling partners kept it competitive while leaving ego at the door!
I did a drop in class while in town for a day at this gym. The instructor was welcoming, as were the students. He clearly has immense knowledge of Bjj and taught really well and I learned a lot from his class and his students who were equally helpful! Will be back for sure next time I am in Minneapolis. Great gym.
High level technique and very friendly gym. Training style with Tim is super playful with lots of experimentation. Thanks for having me and let me know when you pass by Switzerland ;-)
What an amazing place to train! It doesn't matter if you are just starting or you have been training for years, the instruction at Southside is top-notch! I have been training here for the past 2 years and have learned more than I could have possibly imagined in that time!
I visited Southside for a month to train almost every day and I only have good things to say about this place! Super detail-oriented and patient coaching style. I’ve previously only trained in no-gi, and coming here had helped me so much with improving my gi game. There’s a women's session on Saturday (!) but all the other sessions are also very welcoming and made me feel comfortable (I do wish there were more women in the regular sessions, but this is unfortunately the case for most other places as well). Hope I can come back to train again!
Authentic people, chill vibes, tough competitors 🤙, everything that matters for a great bjj gym is here
This is an excellent Jiu jitsu gym, I highly recommend it to other parents. My son attended and received stellar training. He was new to the sport and timid, and I always felt he was in the best of hands, both cared for and always challenged to get even better. The instructors are skilled, patient, and provide the kids with plenty of opportunity to learn and practice together. The membership is very competitive and location is convenient. We had nothing but great experiences here, no reservations at all.
Joining Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been a transformative experience for me. Professor Enrique, the head instructor, is not only an outstanding tactician but also a highly skilled. His passion for the art is contagious, and under his watchful eye, I have learned the importance of perfecting my techniques and embracing the values of discipline, resilience, and respect. What sets Professor Enrique apart is his ability to break down complex moves into digestible steps tailored to each student's level. He has always been open to my questions and provides detailed responses that have deepened my understanding of Jiu-Jitsu. His unwavering commitment to my progress has made me feel competent in my skills and confident in my ability to apply them during rolls and future competitions. In addition to Professor Enrique, other instructors, like Professor Adrian Ricci, and higher belt students like Nik and Tim have been incredibly helpful and encouraging. Their collective expertise creates a well-rounded learning experience that fosters growth and development. The gym itself is clean and well-maintained, and I've found a supportive and motivated community in my fellow practitioners. Southside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy flexible scheduling with classes in the morning, midday, and evenings, has made it easy for me to fit training into my busy life. I can't imagine a better environment to learn and grow in the art of Jiu-Jitsu, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to train under Professor Enrique and the rest of the talented team.
I dropped in for a class while I was in town for work. It’s a great atmosphere with high level black belt instruction, and everyone was very welcoming and friendly. I will certainly return when I’m back in town!
This is a great place to train! The crew at Southside bjj are very welcoming to visitors and cater to all levels of grappling experience.
Love the gym! It’s a great training environment for both beginners and advanced! People are eager to help you learn and help you out! Would highly recommend Southside to anyone wanting to start jiu-jitsu!
Saw the steam on the windows as I pulled up and knew I had found a good spot. Excellent gym with high level training partners. Dropped in for a competition training session and was not disappointed. If you’re in the Twin Cities, this is the place to train.
This place changed my life. Lost over 40 pounds in a year going to this gym 3-5 times a week and my Jiu jitsu ability is night and day from the last place I trained. The training and instruction you receive will have you seeing results in no time!
Southside BJJ will always be the obvious choice when I am visiting Minneapolis. The gym has a great group of people to train with and Enrique is a very thoughtful instructor.
I’m obsessed with this place. Great coach and wonderful training partners. I just wish I started at a younger age…
I visited from out of state and this gym was the best I visited in the area! A small facility, but that doesn’t take away from the amount of detail you learn. Great coaches and good vibes! Def recommend.
Great place! Walked in and welcomed. Instruction is very thorough and all members are more than willing to help walk through fundamentals/positions. Many class options for all types of schedules. Highly recommend!
My 3 kids (8,6,& 4) have been attending Southside since March 2022. It is crazy to me how much change I’ve seen in just 7 months! Both of my girls have competed in tournaments and their confidence has grown SO MUCH. Results speak for themselves. It has been the most amazing experience to be a part of Southside. I can’t wait to see the progress the next years will bring!
I have had an excellent time at this gym thus far. I came in with little to zero knowledge about BJJ. The coaches have been great to help me get up to speed. I felt comfortable walking in brand new, which was my biggest hang up to finally get started. Worth checking this place out!
I joined Southside from another gym after moving and I was immediately impressed. The instructors are extremely helpful and knowledgable and want to genuinely see you succeed. Everyone here trains hard and I learn something from everyone I roll with! I cannot recommend this gym more whether you are looking to do BJJ for general fitness or competitively.
I had an opportunity to drop in for a session while on a business trip and had a fantastic workout. Enrique and his team are highly decorated fighters, knowledgeable, hard working, and very welcoming. I’m truly thankful to have a gym I can attend while traveling. Thank you Southside BJJ! 🤙🏼
I decided to train here during my vacation to Minneapolis. This is not my home gym but everyone welcomed me as though it was. Great atmosphere and fierce competitors, can't wait train here again.
Very welcoming group of guys with a technical and competitive team. Everybody works hard, but it was a lot of fun.
As someone who just started learning BJJ, I’m glad I stumbled upon Southside. I attended ‘Women’s class’ on a Saturday for my first day (ever), and followed with an ‘all levels class’ few hours after. Got to learn with all the girls first, then jumped, face first, into the whole mix. It was intense and ego crushing; and because of that, it’s shaped who I am today. Never stopped going, showed up consistently, & met so many awesome people. It’s been an amazing journey, lots of support from the instructors & peers, and good vibes. xo
Awesome place to train at. Everyone is super nice and welcoming. All the teachers are super helpful and easy to understand. It has definitely become one of the best parts of my week.
Was one of the most welcoming & knowledgeable gyms I've been to , will definitely be coming back anytime I'm in town , OSSSS 💪❤
I am traveling for work and I was able to drop in for an evening advanced class (gi). Atmosphere was welcoming and the training was tough. The Professor was accomodating. I felt the belt levels were held to a very high standard there and I'd recommend this place to anyone.
I went here twice with a friend. The teachers are all very knowledgeable and professional. The mats and space are clean, spacious, and well-kept. It's also well-situated in NE Minneapolis, so you can get some delicious food after you've worked up a sweat. Would definitely recommend to newer and experienced learners!
After one demo class with these guys I signed up immediately. Enrique, Adrian, and Tim are incredibly gifted instructors, and Southside BJJ is probably the hardest training gym in the Twin Cities. Everyone here is kind, respectful, and friendly. If you're looking for a great workout for both mind and body as well as a caring and supportive community, this is definitely the place to find it.
Enrique runs a great class at Southside. Beginners are welcome with open arms and there is a great team atmosphere in the gym. I would highly recommend Southside to anyone interested in starting BJJ.
Great place to train. Friendly and skilled staff. Good mix of skilled students. Just don’t change in the mud room… there are changing rooms in the back. Also BYO reusable water bottle
BJJ should be laid back yet focused, and that is exactally why I settled on this gym as my primary training in the cities. Also, the space pops with all the white, and Enrique plays good music. Great environment for competitors and non-competitors alike. Higher belts consistently show up and roll during the beginners classes to develop the newer athletes. Nik the assistant coach is an awesome guy too.
I went in looking for a new combat sport to try while studying at the U of M, and found an incredible community of people at Southside who welcomed me without hesitation. Enrique has worked hard to make an encouraging and friendly atmosphere for everyone, and it definitely shows. Classes are a fun and challenging workout, and BJJ has become my new obsession. If you're a new female student, the women's class is a great way to get acquainted with the sport and the gym. Definitely would recommend trying out!
This is a great place to come and learn BJJ, whatever your motivations/goals may be. They have a successful competitive team, but it is definitely a safe and welcoming place for beginners. I've mostly been coming for fitness and health, and every coach and student has treated me with the highest degree of respect, patience, and camaraderie. I would definitely recommend coming to a class if you are looking for a fun way to get in shape, or if you are looking to be a part of a warm community of supportive people.
Our family has been training off and on at Southside for a little over 2 years. Its been an awesome experience, including for our 4 kids. A great balance of down to earth friendly camaraderie, an intense training environment, and a community for folks from wildly different walks of life... with a focus on extremely functional and effective techniques. Professor Enrique Muniz and many other folks have become like family for us. If you are looking to train really hard, and have fun, I highly recommend Southside!
Excellent place to train at. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone. Regardless of your level of experience or how long you will be in the area, the entire coaching staff and all gym members will make you feel like you are a valuable part of the group from the day you walk in the door.
I love the structure of this academy: warmup, techniques and then rolling. It's a great workout, hard work and you learn a few techniques each time you go, and a few techniques is plenty for a beginner like me. I enjoy the community and getting to go at 6am before the day even starts for the rest of the family. It's convenient and doesn't cut into family life. Good team!
Great coaching, great people and great price.
Safe environment to train day in day out. The only 6am daily class in twin cities, so wake up early and join us....or come to 6pm like a normal person. Enrique is very specific in his training. Good stuff.
I was near Minneapolis visiting my sister for the weekend and wanted to get some training in, so I attended the Friday night class. The detailed instruction from professor Enrique and coach Nik was phenomenal. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the class so much I came back Saturday morning for the ladies only class and stayed for the following class as well! I will definitely be back. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone interested in jiu jitsu or passing through the Minneapolis area.
While visiting family in MN, I dropped into Southside BJJ for 2 classes. Professor gave clear instructions, emphasizing the nuances that make the techniques more effective. The school was clean and the members were friendly. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area looking to start BJJ or for anyone needing to train while visiting MN.
Just went to my first class here. Everyone was very welcoming and I could feel the family-like atmosphere. I will definitely be signing up here. I recommend Southside BJJ to anyone who’s looking to get in shape and learn the amazing art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. See you on the mats!!
Great warmups, awesome techniques, and fun times rolling. Enrique takes the time to break down techniques and explains each point, patiently answering any questions along the way. The school welcomed me as a drop-in and felt just like my home gym. IE: introduce yourself, slap, bump and go. I would recommend Southside to anyone in the area or anyone who happens to be in town and looking to train.
The real brazilian jiu jitsu with a real brazilian warrior Vicente Cavalcanti!
Solid instructors and friendly people! I'm from out of town, and they treated me well and I picked up some techniques to take home.
I really like this Academy. Prof Enrique is very knowledgeable, and the people there are great. The culture is competitive, welcoming, friendly, and respectful. You can expect to roll really hard and be stretched, but then leave with new friends. The 6 am time slot is really convenient for a working father of 3 like myself. I can sneak out of the house while my family is asleep, learn a new technique, roll with some savages and get home just as the kids are waking up. I often wake up early not wanting to go, but am ALWAYS happy I went in the end.
I highly recommend Southside BJJ! Enrique is an excellent coach who has created a positive atmosphere that encourages students to excel. I am brand new to the sport and everyone here has been really welcoming and helpful. The instruction is high quality, the gym is well kept, and there is a great sense of community!
Folks and the instructors at Southside has always been welcoming, respectful and constantly challenges me to be better! Would recommend for anyone to join the gym if you are looking to learn jiujitsu for the first time or if you’ve practiced the art for a long time.
Everyone at the gym is very welcoming and supportive. Professor Enrique is extremely knowledgable and is always willing to give special attention to those who want to learn. If you come to Southside, expect to go hard and improve fast
After my initial trial class I knew that Southside was the place that I wanted to train! Each and every student was very welcoming and made the experience very enjoyable. Enrique offers a well structured curriculum and makes a commitment to helping every student improve. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to get started in BJJ.
A really great place to train. Everyone is super helpful and encouraging.
Great training place, the coach and the students make a great team with a healthy training atmosphere
Professor Enrique is an incredible teacher. His technique is on point and explains the details very well. He, and the students, are all welcoming and all work very hard. Expect a HARD workout.
The gym is clean & welcoming! Coach Enrique & the other teachers are clearly invested in their students. They consistently critique my form each time I attend. Also the price is great!
I just started training at Southside and couldn't be happier with the experience! The people are super friendly, training is structured and a great workout, and instructor is diligent and caring. Highly recommend!
Everything about this place is solid! Enrique is a great teacher and a phenomenal coach who really invests in his students! Everyone is welcoming m, helpful, and friendly. Everyone is hungry for knowledge and works hard. If you want to compete, they’ve got a comp team with incredible camaraderie that is always ready to throw down! There’s lots of drilling and positional sparring in class so expect to learn a lot! There are many different class times available (morning, evening, and night), they even have a 6am class which works perfectly with my schedule! They’ve also got a great fundamentals class as well as advanced classes with plenty of time for sparring (both gi and nogi)! The mats are clean, good hygiene is expected, and membership is affordable! If you want to learn BJJ, you’re gonna wanna check this place out!
I started training here as a complete beginner 6 months ago and it's been awesome. Chill people, cool space, and great instruction from Enrique and Nik.
I'm having the best time learning this sport here. In the foundation classes, coach Enrique demonstrates many techniques with plenty of time for Q+A. After "rolling" is a must. As a fitness enthusiast, I find this one of the most fun an physically challenging activites I've ever done. This community of members and most excellent coaching staff have been extremely welcoming. I look forward to everything they have to offer!
Great option for anyone looking to train Gi and/or Nogi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I tried multiple gyms in the Minneapolis area and Southside was by far the most welcoming and affordable option I found!
I started as a fresh white belt in August of 2019 and couldn't have asked for a better introduction to BJJ. The crowd is helpful and encouraging, as exemplified by Enrique and Nik. The schedule is convenient as well, with options for morning and evening attendance. Check it out!
Southside Jiu Jitsu has a great vibe. The instructors and students are super friendly and welcoming and they have classes for beginners as well as advanced classes for people with experience. I'm a jiu jitsu convert, come check it out!
Great place to train!
Very welcoming owner/professor Enrique Muniz. I am from out of town and I came for an evening Gi class on 11/12/19. Great facility and a very welcoming group of students. I’ll be back next time I’m in town for sure!!
Was in town for work and reached out ahead of my trip to see if I could drop in as a guest from another academy. Was welcomed like a team member by Professor Muniz and all of the students. Learned new techniques that I hadn't seen before and had two days of great training. The atmosphere was perfect; no attitudes, just good clean BJJ. Would definitely train at this school if I lived in town, and bring my kids there as well. Looking forward to visiting the next time I'm in town.
I did a drop in class today as I am in town for a visit with friends. The school is top notch with a fresh look and judo floors. I’m very impressed! Instruction was good. Stayed for open mat and enjoyed a good sweat. Was a great time and I’ll drop in again when I’m back in the MPLS / St Paul area.
Super friendly and knowledgeable instructors. The classes are great, it's very technique and drilling focused. The owner is very passionate about his students doing well. The new place even has lofted floors which make hitting the ground a little more enjoyable.
We were in town visiting family and decided to visit Southside BJJ and train with a friend. We left Southside BJJ with a whole gym full of friends. We could not have had a better experience!! Enrique and Nick are SUPERB when it comes to instruction. Everyone that attended class was incredibly nice. We were welcomed as if we were longtime members of SsBJJ. If you are a total beginner or a competitive monster looking to get some hard rounds in, you will find exactly what you are looking for at SsBJJ. Southside BJJ is a shining example of how ALL bjj gyms should conduct themselves. Clean mats and smiling faces. Their new facility looks amazing as well! Can't wait to visit and train here again!
I had a chance to drop in and take a class from Professor Enrique during a quick work trip to Minneapolis where he and and his students were super cool and welcoming. The gym is centrally located and his classes are a good mix of technique and technique specific rolling, so If you have a few hrs to train during a work trip or looking for a place to pick up a hobby and learn, check out this gym, cool people and technique driven coaching.
Was in the area for a conference. Searched local BJJ schools in the area. Southside is the place to go for some great training. Picked up a few new moves to add to the toolbox . Definitely will come back nextime.
Great group of people to train with. Thanks Professor Enrique for being very welcoming!
I stopped in to train at Southside while in Minneapolis. The school was very welcoming to me. All the students there worked hard and rolled hard but couldn't be nicer. Great gym, I will definitely stop in again next time I'm in town.
Awesome Gym!!! Was in town for My dads wedding and stopped in to train. Great Coaches and Staff!!
Great people, awesome instructors and a motivated, friendly environment makes Southside an incredible place to train!
Best place to learn BJJ in the city, especially for beginners. The instructors and students are all great. They foster an environment that makes you want to come back. I signed up nine months ago, and I look forward to Jiu Jitsu at Southside every day.
Love this place. This week is my third week and I already feel like I fit in. The instructors teach in a way that the lessons builds off of one another, which makes learning things a little easier. Very professional and a lot of fun!
Great environment and great instructors! If you're new to BJJ or a veteran, you will love this academy. Very open to all people. Great location, very close to the University of Minnesota. I'm definitely a lifer at Southside Brazilian Jiu-jitsu!
I dropped in to fundamentals class from out of town and found Southside to be a great learning environment. Enrique and Nick made me feel like part of the family from the start. Instruction was very focused on performing techniques the correct way and the coaches worked the room observing all the students. I hope to get back someday. If you plan on driving, I would suggest taking a ride share instead. Parking in the area is pretty limited.
I spent about a week training at Southside, they are a very welcoming group. Professor Enrique Muniz Has a lot of passion and pride which shows while he teaches. If you are looking for somewhere to start your training Southside would be a great choice.
I was in MSP for work and dropped in for an all-level class followed by an open mat. Professor Enrique led a challenging but educational class on some cool techniques. The other students were skilled, talented and athletic. Most importantly, the team was welcoming and the environment had the right balance of humility and confidence. I'll definitely be back.
A warm and friendly gym with quality coaching close to the center of Minneapolis! I came along as a visiting drop-in, was quickly welcomed into the club and had some fun rolls with the team.
Fantastic place to train. Instructors are top notch. Gym and mats are clean and hygienic. The environment is friendly and welcoming. As male dominated environments, jiujitsu gyms can feel intimidating for women, but I feel comfortable and respected here. I highly recommend Southside!
