A few months ago we started our 4 year old son at Self Reliant, and overall we are very happy with the experience. Marie & Andrew have been great, along with the other coaches we've met. Our son is a very high-energy kid, and all the coaches have been great at managing the attention span of a 4 year old. They recently opened up a shorter, 30-minute class, that is geared towards very young kids and beginners and I think that will help with the transition from entry-level to the slightly older and more advanced classes. The shortened class still focuses on foundational technique, but instead of just drills, the kids do stations & games, tricking them into learning technique and the basics while being disguised as fun games. My wife and I have always received great communication with Marie & Andrew, talked through the struggles we have with our son, and have always been transparent about the potential they see as well as areas for improvement or ways to help our son succeed during class. Even if Jiu Jitsu doesn't end up being something our son continues, I'm very happy with the experience we've had here and I'd recommend it for parents looking to start their kids young and ease them into the sport.

I dropped in for their Saturday open mat. It is a great gym, and I had an awesome experience. Everyone there was extremely knowledgeable. They have pro-level skills, but let you train safely at your skill level.
This place is great. Everyone here is so friendly and positive. Coaches are great. My 10 year old has fallen in love with this sport.
Im a traveling purple belt and have stopped in this gym multiple times. Each time I have gotten some world class level instruction gi or no gi and everyone is super chill.
I’ve only gotten one time so far but the workout was amazing! Instructor was very patient and a wonderful teacher. He broke it down to where it was easy to understand. I’m excited to go back
Dropped in to SRJJ this week while I was in town for work.. I’ve been to a lot of gyms and most of them are just businesses. These guys welcomed me in and each and every person introduced themselves and was excited to allow me to roll with them. SJRR is a family. This gym has top tier hospitality, flawless technique, and some crazy impressive instructors and students. Will 100% be back to this gym next time I’m in town. Just wrapped our last class with Self Reliant Jiu Jitsu and I have to say, if you are ever looking to train the Boise area, you need to go here. We were in town looking for a place to train for the week and they were so gracious with a great family deal so me and my two sons could train. They were so insanely welcoming and hospitable to me and my entire family. When we were without white Gi's they provided them without any hassle. My boys and I got some great instruction from coach Cash Burgess and Professor J. Andrew Thomas. Our boys made quick friends in thier class and holy cow did they break a sweat. This gym was full of humble, friendly, driven beasts that will make you aware of how far in your journey you have yet to go but will also make you feel like family along the way. I can't say thank you enough.
I was traveling for work and came upon this gem in Boise, Idaho. Great environment, every welcoming, and highly knowledgeable. The professor was very hands on, a great practitioner of the art. If I'm in Boise again I will definitely stop in again and would recommend this Jiu-Jitsu gym to anyone wanting to begin training.
Our two boys started a month ago and they love it. Teachers are great and accomplished in their craft. They compete and encourage the kids to eventually compete.
The coaches are professional, hard working and dedicated. They create a friendly yet challenging environment for training. The facilities are superb too! You know that the owners have really put a lot of thought on understanding the needs of the students. More power SRJJ!
I have had such an incredible experience training at Self Reliant. All the coaches are wonderful and know how to break down each skill and technique in multiple ways that are easy to understand. They also have such a great community, and I have felt so supported by everyone!

I could not imagine a better place to start learning Jiu Jitsu. I stepped into SRJJ out of nowhere and was immediately welcomed by everyone. They set me up and had me in a class in no time, and I couldn’t believe how fluid the entire process was. Dustin, one of the head instructors, immediately started teaching me the basics when I had no previous knowledge. If you want to try Jiu Jitsu but aren’t sure where to start, look no further than SRJJ.
I do the womens' class at this gym and really enjoy it. The staff and instructors are super nice and knowledgeable. Great workout overall!
Self Reliant Jiu Jitsu is a amazing place for being active, losing weight, self defense, wanting to be a serious competitor, or even just for a hobby. They have a great program in general. All the coaches there understand you on a personal level and really focus on your best interest.

First off, Wow! What a beautiful gym. The coaching staff and front desk made me feel welcome immediately. There ciriculum is piece by piece and never feels overwhelming for a newbie like myself. Was able to drop in while visiting town- cannot say enough good things about this gym. Andrew’s passion for a top notch training environment is evident and clearly contagious amongst the other coaches and members. If you are a high level grappler, you will love this gym. If you are a beginner, you will feel welcomed, comfortable, and taken care of from the start. Grateful to have SRJJ as a reliable training space when I am in town. I have been training with professor Andrew at SRJJ for a couple months now. His attention to detail and his ability to meet you and your skill level exactly where you’re at is phenomenal. SRJJ brings the highest level of Jiu Jitsu and professionalism to the treasure valley. Being 41 years old and a beginner was a bit intimidating, but I quickly learned that all skill levels and ages are welcome. My wife and I are also so excited to have our kids at SRJJ as well. Coach Dustin is exceptional with the kids. I highly encourage anyone interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to come and train with the best right here in SE Boise. Had the pleasure of training with Andrew for 9 months the past year. The coaching was excellent, and I enjoyed how it was geared towards giving students the ability to succeed in competition.
