I trained at Sakura Jiu Jitsu for almost a year and highly recommend it. Chris is a Marcelo Garcia black belt and brings a deep, no-nonsense style of instruction that really helped me learn. Adam runs early morning classes that are absolutely worth waking up for, great instruction and a solid crew. Shoutout to Thomas, my main training partner, who pushed me every day and taught me a ton along the way. Great vibe, clean gym, serious training.

I joined this gym because I wanted an extra curricular to do after work and I was recommended BJJ by my coworker. To start, Coach Chris is awesome! There was no pressure when it came to signing up or how many classes I took. He also made sure that I felt comfortable, regarding the environment. During my first class everyone there was so welcoming and made efforts to show me some moves, tips and tricks. It’s a great gym!
Dropped in while in town. Super clean gym. Coach was easy to meet and welcoming. Coach even gave me some individual attention which is not expected at a visitor level at all. Very diverse student base in terms of age, sex, weight, skill. All the students were friendly. Had a great training session. I would recommend anyone looking into to BJJ to check this place out.

If you live in the Woodstock/Town Lake area you need to come learn Jiu Jitsu from Coach Chris. He has a great kids program that my daughter was in till she moved up the the adult class. My wife and also go to this school as well.

Moved my 9 year old son at the time, now 11, here from another martial arts school and the difference is incredible. Coach Chris does a great job of keeping it fun for the kids while making sure they are on task learning JiuJitsu and prepared in the unfortunate event things were to get physical out and about.
Sakura is an awesome place to train, whether you are a casual hobby-ist or looking to compete. Coach Chris (black belted under the GOAT Marcelo Garcia) leads the charge and competes just as often as his students do, which is not something all combat sports coaches do. He is also a brown belt in judo (under Olympian Celita Schutz) and so incorporates a good amount of standing techniques into the daily lessons, for anyone like me who came from a judo background. He personally instructs nearly every class, adult or children. Speaking of children, the children's classes are great, not too long that they lose attention but long enough that they get quality instruction. It is not like other places that may pad their classes with warm-ups and games; children's class warm-ups take a couple minutes and then the rest of the class is drilling and sparring. The student body is warm, welcoming, and close-knit. The assistant coaches are all very competent grapplers as well. There is a good mix of ages, body types, and styles among the school (e.g. bottom-side players, leg lockers, wrestlers, etc). There are also a good amount of women at the school, and a good amount of them compete as well.
I came in over the holidays and dropped in to get some training while I'm out of town. The gym has a humble, welcoming, and professional atmosphere. Chris Civello ran a great class with high level instruction. He took time to help every student, including a visitor like myself. All the students were friendly as well. Train at Sakura Jiu Jitsu to enjoy a gym that manages the hard balance of great training and great atmosphere!

Sakura Jiu Jitsu is the place you need to be if you want to train martial arts and Jiu Jitsu. Having grown up in Woodstock, I've always seen Karate and martial arts schools that advertise teaching you or your kids self defense, but none of it actually compares to learning Jiu Jitsu at this gym. Here, you learn skills that pertain to self defense as well as the Jiu Jitsu sport (which Chris and his team, both kids and adults, have taken by storm in a short amount of time) which will boost your confidence as a human being. Chris, the head instructor, is such a genuine role model and teacher. He truly is only interested in you and your progress at this gym and on the mat, unlike some other gyms around the area that might feel transactional. He takes the time to get to know you, and leads by example in creating a safe, welcoming environment for all to join. It truly feels like a community with no ego from anyone (even the higher belts) in sight. You are definitely in good hands at this gym.
My now 12-year-old daughter started with Chris Civello almost two years ago — in his garage — and my now 10-year-old, husband and i all train. In addition to BJJ and eating better, ive lost 50 pounds and im a much healthier 44-year-old. I simply cannot recommend Sakura enough. Give it a class a try and see what it’s all about!
Best Jiu Jitsu gym in the area, hands down! I visited 3 schools in the area, and knew this was the place for me after meeting Chris and trying out a class. You won’t find a more caring, attentive, and knowledgeable teacher in the area. The environment is awesome and continues to develop. This will not be a gym where you just have tiger people training, this will become another family for you!
I was new to Jiu Jitsu and very nervous to try something where I had no idea what I was doing, but my experience at Sakura was nothing short of awesome! Coach Chris offers an extremely welcoming and professional environment where I felt 100% comfortable. You can really tell that everyone involved there shares an immense respect for the sport and for those participating, no matter their level. The women's class was an amazing experience and as a fellow beginner, I'd certainly recommend it to anyone looking to dip their toes into Jiu Jitsu or just build their confidence in their own skills!

Chris Civello is an excellent instructor from a very solid Jiu-jitsu background. He has trained under both Renzo Gracie and Marcelo Garcia lineages, which produce amazing Gi and No Gi competitors, many of them world class. He is also a Judo brown belt, which is a huge asset to anyone who wants to learn more takedowns than many Jiu-jitsu coaches have the knowledge base to teach. Chris is a patient and intelligent instructor who is skilled in disseminating information in a way that both the novice and seasoned practitioner can benefit from. If you're looking for a place to learn self defense, sport Jiu-jitsu, Judo, Gi, and No-Gi or if you have a desire to compete in Jiu-jitsu, try this place out. You won't be disappointed.
I've been training under Chris for the past 5 months. He is a stand up guy that would give you the shirt off his back. He's a Marcelo Garcia black belt and you can see that in class when he points out the tiniest of details. I plan on staying and hopefully getting my black belt under Chris one day.

When choosing a dojo, there are a few things I consider: the teacher, the art, and the students. Coach Chris teaches his martial art with kindness, expertise, and passion. You immediately feel welcome, safe, and appreciated. He clearly knows what each student needs, and offers amazing feedback. The art of Jiu Jitsu is very well known, and extremely useful for real word scenarios, and competition alike. Looking to improve my ground game, I am very grateful to have found Sakura Jiu Jitsu. My wife has been wanting to learn this art for a very long time. She did her research and tried multiple places. We are both very excited to have found the perfect place to learn Jiu Jitsu. It has instilled a new level of confidence and self respect in myself and my wife, after only a few classes. Lastly, the students here are top notch. He puts the same max effort into his teaching whether there are two people or 15 people in class and is approachable for questions/pointers on what we go over. Unfortunately, Last year I found myself in a position where I needed to find a new jiu jitsu school to train at. I had lots of anxiety about starting a new school and feeling like an imposter that I ended up taking a 5 month break from training. Chris and Sakura BJJ came highly recommended so I finally took the leap and started attending classes in March 2022. Starting a new school isn't comfortable, but Chris and the other students made me feel very welcome from day 1. Chris is a great teacher and takes the time to really explain the details in a way that helps me to understand the techniques and concepts. In a short amount of time, I have rediscovered my love for jiu jitsu and deepen my confidence. He throws out so many gems in class that expand my knowledge on what I already know. Finding the right place to train and belong was a priority for me and I feel grateful I am exactly right where I need to be.

I came to Sakura a month ago looking for instruction for myself and my 13-year-old son. What I found was Chris Civello, an instructor with extensive knowledge and experience who takes a personal interest in each of his students. Chris has attracted a team of students who support and encourage each other. From the first day, my son and I felt we belonged at Sakura, and we've enjoyed every moment there since. Regardless of whether your training goals are fitness, self-defense, or even eventual competition, you won't find a better place to train than Sakura Jiu Jitsu.

Chris is an amazing teacher and it shows. He also is able to keep people motivated without judgment. I'm always amazed at the new things I learn, as I didn't think my body would make some of the movements. Chris attracts students, who like him will be your cheerleader and friend. My 14 year old son has been training under Chris for 6 months. It is great to see the steady improvement in being taught a real life self defense skill. Chris is super detailed and super patient with the students. He is very encouraging and I have seen great results in all the students, not just my son. It is a family atmosphere and there are no egos allowed. Chris is a black belt under Marcelo Garcia , and if you follow BJJ, then you already know. But if you are not well versed in BJJ, Marcelo Garcia is arguably the most revered name in the history of BJJ as a competitor. I would give Sakura 6*s if it was allowed.
Coach Chris has been amazing. Our daughter is 10 years old and was completely new to this sport. She was hooked after her first class working with Coach Chris. She has gained skills and a new passion for the sport and self defense.
I have been attending Chris’ class for roughly the past 5 months. Not once I have thought to my self that there is something different that I wish Chris would change about the class. I met Chris a few years ago through some mutual friends we have in the jiu jitsu world. I taught yoga at Sakura for awhile before taking my bjj journey there. What I love most about Chris is how much he cares about his students. This is not just another school trying to make money. He genuinely wants his students to be the best. He is super down to earth, understanding, and an overall great coach. I took some very valuable techniques from Sakura that I continue to implement in my bjj game. If you are in the area and considering bjj for yourself or your kids, I highly recommend checking out his school.
I was looking for an alternative to wrestling for my son. After meeting Chris, I was greatly impressed with his program, his demeanor and quite honestly his other students. I would be sitting in the waiting area for my son to finish his class and the next class would be arriving and the students (of all ages) would always be very courteous and respectful. The encouragement there is infectious and was enough to get me to join. Every class begins and ends with a handshake. Respect. A quality that seems lost nowadays but I can wholeheartedly attest is alive and well here.
Right from the beginning, everyone at Sakura BJJ was welcoming, accommodating, and made my decision to pursue training here very easy. The facility is great, there's an app to keep you up to date on all the events, and the staff and Chris take the time to teach and are patient (which I feel is the most important part). 5+ Stars
Took the BJJ plunge in January and haven't looked back. From Day 1 Chris has been nothing but encouraging, patient, and enthusiastic. And the same can be said for each of the coaches like Russ, Eric, Adam, Anne, etc. Classes are based on position build on themselves over a set period of time, so what's taught today isn't lost tomorrow. This systematic approach is both rewarding and comforting. I had no martial arts background, no wrestling background, but in 5 short months feel significantly more comfortable and skilled in rolling and more confident in general. Lastly, it's hard to understate the impact of the atmosphere and all of the people. I moved to NJ recently--away from friends and family. I joined the gym to learn Jiu Jitsu and get active locally. I was hardly expecting to be welcomed with open arms let alone feel that I now have a new network of close friends. The familial feel of the gym is a testament to Chris, his coaches, and all of the students. It's a wonderful place to train. Can't wait to get back on the mat!
I have nothing but great things to say about Sakura Bjj this is an amazing gym ive been here since 01/19. Chris Civillo is our main coach here he is very methodical when it comes to teaching a move, he is very patient makes sure you understand what he is teaching. We also have other coaches that are also as great as him starting with coach Russ he is great and has amazing takedowns, Coach Dave teaches on Wednesday he is always bringing something nice to teach, coach Ann is great makes sure all our women that are coming in feel comfortable and understand, coach Eric is amazing when teaching also has great ideas to make you understand the techniques overall amazing place. Theres a reason why there is only one person giving this place a bad review and thats not cause the place is bad there is just people you cant please no matter what, if your reading this please disregard that person review ive never had any financial issue with this place.
SBJJ is the real deal. I enrolled my child into the Honey badger program and would recommend any and all parents to seriously consider enrolling their children. The knowledge, technique and discipline the teachers instill in these kids will stay with them for life. Chris and staff do an amazing job - wish I could give more stars...
Great place to do Jiu-Jitsu, the owner is patient and clear with what he teaches. I went there and the entire experience has humbled me and inspired me to continue this beautiful art. I highly recommend anyone in the Military or Police to take on BJJ even if it’s the most basic program, it will noticeably make a change in you after a month or so. Best change I’ve ever made in my life and I guarantee you’ll love it too. To all my military and first responder guys allow me to meet you personally so I can personally thank you for making a big change in your career and hopefully we can get time on the mat.

I trained at Sakura for a couple months in the past and am happy to be back and training there again. You won't find a nicer place to be. The instructors are great at guiding you if you're just starting out or challenging you if you've got experience, they are all really friendly and they push you to be the best you can be. The facility itself is always well kept and clean, there is a nice workout area, and there is ample mat space for rolling. If you are looking for a great place to take some classes and train, then you should definitely check out what Sakura has to offer.

My son has been training here for about a year starting at age 5 and it has transformed him in terms of athleticism, confidence, and focus. The coaches are great people and great teachers. I can't recommend it highly enough and only wish I had time to take him to more classes!
Sakura BJJ has become like a second home to me and I have only been training here for 3 weeks. I am already obsessed with this sport and Sakura is the reason I love it so much. I started JiuJitsu about 6 months ago and I can say it has greatly changed my life. Im not good at socializing much or these things. As Rust Chole would say "I'm not good at parties" but I digress and I'm very happy I started my journey with Sakura. The coaches are great, take the time to cover the smallest of details, and those details matter. The environment is welcoming and energetic. Great place to train. They made me feel like family from the moment I walked in. Never judged me on what I did wrong but instead helped me. I was scared to try something like this because I knew I had no training before and would fail. But the instructors are extremely nice and help you along the way. Choosing this gym was the best decision I have made. Wouldn't trade it for another.
The absolute best BJJ Academy ever! I love training at Sakura. The students and instructors are the best. The instructors are extremely skilled and accomplished in BJJ and effectively teaching it. The head instructor, Chris Civello (Marcelo Garcia's 21st Black Belt), is dedicated to his students and Helping us become the best version of ourselves. They gradually build the students up to a higher level of training. My Daughter is in the kids program and she loves it. I have seen her confidence increase tremendously since she started at Sakura. For me it is truely like having a second family.

I started going to Sakura just after the new year and it has been one of the best decisions I've made. The staff is friendly, helpful, and incredibly knowledgeable. The other students follow the staff's lead and are very positive and encouraging. The atmosphere at Sakura is terrific as is the instruction and workout. I have been to other martial arts academies and quite honestly Sakura blows them away.

Sakura BJJ provides an incredibly welcoming environment while maintaining a keen focus on solid and challenging training. The coaching staff (Chris, Matt, Alex, and Russ) are top-notch and astute observers of students' needs. They take the time and effort to ensure EVERY student takes something away from each class. Sakura Brazilian Jui Jitsu is definitely not a McDojo. The school is the real deal and you get your money's worth. The class size varies from 6 - 15 people but the attention from the coaches is divided evenly at all times. I enjoy training here 3 times a week.

The teachers Chris Civello, Alex Kennedy, Matt Walter, and Russ are a great group of guys. Each teacher brings a different style to their jiu jitsui game which lets you pick and choose how you will develop your game and how to defend against others. Also they are very good at explaining the moves I almost never walk away confused and if I'm having trouble the teacher will walk me through it. In my experience no one is going on the mat and looking to hurt their opponent. The mats are cleaned daily (I've seen it happen) .In the couple of months I have been going I learned a lot and made quite a few friends. I look forward to continue to go.

Coach John has also done a fantastic job of improving upon the atmosphere and management of the school. It is truly somewhere we feel at home and we look forward to going. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to study a martial art form and connect with an amazing community of people.
I love my school Sakura i love BJJ, i want to bring everybody to this school its amazing and the couches are good at what they do. Its more then just a BJJ school its a home for everybody, its a place where everybody will try to help you with what ever you need work on and its the best school to learn BJJ im glad i signed up and im glad to part of the family.

Wow!!!! it just amazes me that these guys treat our kids like their own. I have two boys that practice jiujtsu and They are so well disciplined by the coaches.Being a brazilian and great admirer of this martial arts,it gives me the honor to see the high quality jiujtsu passed on to the kids.Great job guys,keep it up.

If you are looking to get in shape or learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sakura is the place to go. Chris Civello is one of the most passionate people I have ever met and he is a really great guy to be around. The atmosphere there is incredible and the place is a ton of fun! If you are ever considering it, I highly recommend going to Sakura for training!
It's a great school, Chris really knows his stuff, if you are a beginner he will help you better understand the exercises so that you can continue on growing your jiu jitsu education!
I could list a million reasons as to why Jiu Jitsu is beneficial not only physically, but mentally and spiritually as well, however, it is the attention to detail and the quality of the training produced by Sakura's staff that makes this rating 5 stars. This is a place where all students are welcome, whether they're in or out of shape, young or old, new or experienced. I've been training at the school for about 3 years and am proud to say I'm a blue belt under Chris Civello who is the head instructor for the Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing programs. It is truly a place where you can really work on becoming the best version of yourself with careful guidance and without judgment or worries. Hands down the best life decision I ever made!
Sakura BJJ is an amazing place. Even though I stopped going due to my work and trying to pay off my student loans I miss it a lot. The best part about Sakura was that everyone there welcomes you with open arms and is willing to help to you. The coaches are great they are extremely patient (I'm a slow learner) and they just have a way of simplifying things to make it understandable. I recommend Sakura to anyone. I hope that I can rejoin again soon. At Sakura you're not going to just a BJJ gym what you're joining is a community where everyone cares and they wanna see you grow and excel!!!!
by far the best school ive trained in the coaches not only chris but matt and alex and justin russ and more are the friendliest most hard working coaches theres no pressure to jump up in ranks and everyone is so bery nice i love that school sakura bjj all the way
