Matt has been a great coach. I joined Sabre as a BJJ / grappling newbie and have noticed my skill and fitness come a long way since when I started. Matt’s classes are always calm, fair and team spirit is something that shines through. I’d recommend BJJ as a great martial art to anyone, and would recommend Sabre as the perfect place to start or continue your journey.

Sabre Grappling is a great club to train at. Each session is broken down in techniques for the first half and then build up to sparring the techniques taught or free sparring. The techniques are broken down into small easy to understand sections and built into the full technique. This makes the sessions ideal for complete beginners in Brazilian Jujitsu as well as seasoned practitioners. Everyone can pick a part to learn or improve their skills. The coaches are patient and are prepared to help everyone one on the mats improve. They take time to explain the technique if you don't understand something and make minor adjustments to improve your skills. All questions about techniques are listened to analysed and then answered. No question is stupid. It's only stupid to not ask one when you need to understand. The coaches use this to lift everyone's skills to the next level. This makes it a great environment to learn and progress. It is also a fun place to be on the mats as we all work through what we have been taught and lock in the knowledge through reps. Each session builds on the last starting with a recap and adding to it. This follows through the theme for each month. This means if you miss a session you don't get left behind. I highly recommend joining in and come learn some great new skills and get fit whilst you are doing it. This is one of the best ways to get fit. Have fun and learn at the same time as your fitness improves. Don't think I need to be fit before I start. Start now and get fit whilst you learn.

Matt’s coaching at Sabre was my introduction to BJJ just over a year ago, and it’s been something that’s been part of my life every week since, which is testament to the environment and culture Matt’s created. The sessions are run in a simple format, though technical enough so you understand what you’re doing as well as why, whilst still remaining very beginner friendly - would absolutely recommend to anyone considering getting into BJJ.

As a newcomer to any martial arts and also as a woman, I was a little nervous about starting grappling, but Sabre Grappling in Stevenage has been amazing from day one! The coach, Matt, is incredibly supportive, and creates such a welcoming, inclusive environment for everyone, regardless of gender or experience. Matt takes the time to ensure you’re comfortable with the techniques and is always happy to answer questions. The other members are super-friendly and encouraging, making it easy to feel like part of the community. I’ve gained so much confidence, not just physically but mentally, too. I highly recommend Sabre Grappling to any woman considering martial arts or self-defense training—it’s an empowering and fun experience!

Really great community with a fantastic coach. I have tried multiple BJJ gyms in the area and I can say Matt's coaching is second to none. Easy to understand and practical coaching that you can quickly and easily implement into your game. Perfect place for beginners to experienced alike 🤙
