Came in town for visit some family and friends. Stopped in at NWMA and had such positive experience. The gym offers a welcoming and supportive environment for practitioners of all levels, whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned competitor. What really stands out is the expertise of head coach Harold Utterback. Harold’s teaching style is clear, encouraging, and inspiring. The community at NWMA is friendly and inclusive, creating a great atmosphere that keeps you motivated to improve every day. If you’re looking for a top-notch jiu jitsu gym in Eugene, NWMA is definitely the place to be!

I started here as a white belt. Even though I have trained elsewhere over the years, I have had the privilege of earning all of my belts at NWMA. Its always a welcoming environment with a focus on helping you become the best version of yourself possible.

Showed up for kickboxing fundamentals and a great first training experience. Instruction was clear, concise, and showed the depth of experience and knowledge held by the instructor. Gym was clean and well taken care of, with gear available. Highly recommend.

I was traveling through Eugene on a work trip a couple months ago and decided to train while on the road. Northwest Martial Arts was very welcoming. As a new blue belt, I attended an All Levels class, which contained folks from white through brown and black belts. The session was a review of what the school had worked on for the past month. Here’s some things that I really liked: I got to roll with multiple people of multiple belt levels, nobody was gunning for me and instead everybody did a good job of matching resistance and working technique while going through the various drill scenarios, the upper belts provided coaching when appropriate and Prof. Harold Utterback in addition to the initial explanations provided individual coaching as needed to his students and me as a visitor as well (turns out he knows the professor overseeing my school, so i guess it’s a small world at that echelon of BJJ). A couple other things, I had a chance to watch part of the youth program before the adult class and was impressed with the engagement between the instructors and students. They also disinfected mats between classes, have showers and locker rooms on site, sufficient space for multiple pairs to roll and it was an excellent experience as a visitor with ample evidence of a quality program.

I was in town for my son's graduation and stopped by NWMA to train. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Professor Harold provided great instruction as well as made me feel part of the team (even for one day). Thank you Professor and the team at NWMA. I truly appreciated my time there.

I love this place. I was kind of iffy about doing Jiujitsu due to prior experiences with other gyms, but this totally blew my fear away and I've been enjoying every class and every day that I come in to train.

I’ll vouch for this gym. As an aunt I’ve taken my niece & nephews to class a few times, sat & watched, & have been impressed with the discipline that they learn (of self & of the art) through a very patient instructor. He doesn’t let them walk all over him, but he also knows they’re young. It’s a fine line that he balances very well.

I've been traveling around the country for 6 months and I get to drop in at a ton of different gyms. NWMA is a friendly, relaxed environment to practice bjj for both adults and children. The classes are led by black belts, both of which are a pleasure to know and train with. This place is exactly what I'm looking for and I won't hesitate to return whenever I'm in town. Update: after visiting multiple other gyms and being offered $30-40 drop in fees for one kids class, nobody showing up to classes scheduled and posted out front (including the instructor), and getting zero answers to phone calls from these other gyms I decided to go to nwma exclusively when I'm in Eugene. They have so many black belts at this place, it doesn't matter if the instructor is there for a class. Pick any of the bb regulars to teach. Everyone is so cool here, I really like the people at this gym.

My son started with Coach Maddy and Prof Tyler just before his 4th birthday. He has been working with them for 2 1/2 years and he loves his coaches and Jui Jitsu! He is now a kids purple belt and hopes to go all the way through kids , youth and onto Adult black belt all because of what he sees in his coaches! They not only teach Jui jitsu the physical side but work on building character, manners, strength and confidence. I have seen these coaches work with all their students when they are focused and when they lack (the kids that is 😀). They have fun creative ways to teach and strengthen the kids for Jui Jitsu. The coaches genuinely care about their students. During the first year of Covid they switched to online teaching until we were allowed back in person. They did a wonderful job and a few of us parents got our own free lessons as we worked with our kids. They continued to check in on all their students and even talk them through the crazy changes in life during that time. They have been professional and yet cared. They know stuff when it comes to Jui Jitsu! They are great coaches and anyone who trains under them will really learn and grow a lot! Highly recommended!!!

I have been training jiu jitsu here for a little over 2 years now and it is like a 2nd family. All of the staff and coaches are great! Everyone is so friendly and we are all one big team that helps one another grow and make each other's jiu jitsu stronger.

Great place, good atmosphere, and relaxed caoches that will really drive you when its time to put in work. Great for sport and self defense training, coaches even include bits from other martial arts to improve and create wel rounded-ness. Always have lots of fun beating people up, especially Kimo.

My two kids just finished their 6 week trial and loved it. Professor Tylor and Coach Maddy do an absolutely great job with the kids. Very patient and show a great deal of enthusiasm when coaching. The classes are great and fun for the kids.

I trained here for about two years mainly for Muay Thai. Kinda on and off towards the end because of injuries. The coaching staff is all knowledgeable and extremely nice. The gym is probably the cleanest in Eugene which was one of the reasons I initially started going to NWMA. The only reason I stopped training there was because they got rid of the Muay Thai program. I think that was mostly because the younger generation these days has issues with getting punched in the face during light sparring. It doesn't even matter if it doesn't leave blood or a bruise. I'd like to see Muay Thai make its way back on the schedule here. If I was going to leave any constructive criticism, it would be on the coaches opinion of weight training / muscle tone. The coaches here are on the lighter side and they make it obvious they think that's the best build in the game. Unfortunately, there's more than a handful of the hundred and fifty pound six foot dudes that take this to heart.

After shopping around a bit and checking out the selection of places to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the area I found NWMA and knew right away that this was the place for me. The instructors here are first rate and cultivate a truly excellent culture among the students, while sharing their passion for training in martial arts. After becoming a passionate student myself I have recently gotten my son started training here with me and discovered that the kids classes are also excellent. My 8 year old son has never been so enthusiastic about athletics as he is about jiu jitsu and I'm really happy that he can train hard in an art that doesn't involve the risk of brain trauma associated with striking based martial arts. The instructors, facilities and community of students here are all great and make training at NWMA a perfect fit for me.

I havent actually joined yet. However I have been in there a bit, learned a few techniques for Jiu Jitsu. I must say everyone I met at NWMA are totally supportive and cool. If you dont know any thing about martial arts, everyone is super patient with you and just want to help! Highly recommended.

NWMA always has open arms to people that are trying to learn a martial arts and be a part of a loving and inclusive community. I have been here since April 2011, and the amazing owners Ryan and Jenna Kelly always go out of their way to check in with students to make sure they are loving their training. The instructors are always kind and open to answering questions. As a woman, I know that in a male-dominated sport, I can always trust the owners to be inclusive and supportive of my decision to lead the BJJ and kickboxing lifestyle.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at this academy is the best you will come across in Oregon, South of Portland. The students here place in events all the time for BJJ and MMA. There is so much talent and benevolence at this school- You'll learn all the time. The instructors really care about your progress. BJJ is my therapy and fitness strategy. The students here are my friends.
