Very welcoming studio. Went in my buddies and had a great time. We were the only people in the 6:45pm class. Every position was very thoroughly explained and demonstrated effectively. Overall, would recommend to every person I meet.
My five year old daughter just had her first class here with Eric Leach and she loved it! I found Eric to be a first class instructor with a very calm and controlled demeanor. He has the perfect temperament for managing young children in this type of environment. They keep the class numbers to small maximum number so they can provide extra attention to young grapplers. Great place!
Great place to train! The coaches are very knowledgeable, the environment is friendly, and every class pushes you to improve. Highly recommend for anyone looking to get into jiu-jitsu or level up their skills
My son and I stopped by for a lesson while in town visiting family and the instructor Eric was an absolutely amazing guy. We had an all around great experience following his instructions practicing different moves to execute in real life situations, I would definitely recommend anyone that has a real interest or love for JiuJitsu to sign up I promise you won’t regret it.
Visited for first time as a complete beginner for an adult class and open mat session. Extremely inclusive group of guys starting with the instructor Eric. My rolling partner was trying to teach me everything he could and encouraged me throughout the entire process. When I first arrived the kids class was just ending and I couldn’t help but notice all of the kids smiling and laughing as they made their way out.
Oh my God. I am 50 years old and didnt think I could do this, but they work with you and help you and make sure youre doing everything right!!! Everybody was SOO welcoming and helpful and I just LOVE THIS, I cant wait for the next class!! Ten stars!!!! Eric is awesome, and Jackson, thank you SO much!!!
I recently decided to venture into jiu jitsu & I’m so grateful to have come across this place! Eric and Lee have been great and really help you understand and learn how to defend yourself in various situations! As a beginner I was nervous but everyone is so welcoming, I definitely recommend Formula Jiu Jitsu!
Professor Eric is a great instructor and I enjoyed the way he ran his class. Very welcoming and friendly environment that focused on learning technique.
This place is great! Coach Eric is excellent with the kids. He is so patient and knowledgeable. My 10 yr old son has been attending classes since the summer. He loves it. I've noticed that he is becoming a lot better at being a team player, waiting his turn, focusing, and becoming a better listener. Coach is great at keeping them in task. So glad we found this place 🙌 ❤️.
I cannot say enough good things about Formula Jiu Jitsu and Instructor Eric! We tried several other gyms for my son and FJJ has by far the most welcoming atmosphere AND competitive pricing. Eric is patient and knowledgeable and great with kids. I would recommend Formula Jiu Jitsu to anyone looking for a gym, beginner or experienced. The environment at the Plymouth location is not intimidating and you can tell all the instructors (Nikki too!) genuinely care about how and what they teach. Watching my sons face light up and hearing him talk about it the whole drive home the night he got his first stripe was an awesome moment and memory!
Another incredible morning of Jui Jitsu at Formula! Leaving exhausted, drenched and getting better and .better, always learning from many different levels of experience, even from other beginners like me. Love this place! Best way to start your day, or at least make it fit somewhere!
Eric was excellent instructor. He worked with my son that is 8 and is a beginner he worked at my son pace my son couldn’t stop talking about it when we got home definitely will be back!
Took my first class after finally having the time and always wanting to start jiu jitsu. Eric the instructor was very helpful and knowledgeable making it easy to get started. First class was great and everyone was welcoming to me even as a beginner.
My 6 year old absolutely loves Formula Jiu Jitsu! He never wanted to do any sport, until we found this! The instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful! Highly recommend!
Eric and the team at Formula Jiu Jitsu are incredible, respectful and professional working with all skill levels and ages. I was nervous to take my first class and had postponed for far too long. I learned empowering skills in my first class. Left looking forward to my next lesson furthering the development of a new skill set.
Highly recommend attending Formula Jiu Jitsu in Plymouth Michigan for all skill levels and ages even as young as 4.
Amazing class and I have learned from Coach Eric, really is a good teacher and I have learned good skills from him.
Thank you so much Coach Eric
Mohammad Yaghmour
Super great atmosphere and people! Every single person there is awesome, 100/10 recommend! GI classes in the morning are lovely and then nogi classes in the afternoon as well! 😁
I moved, so Formula is a hot minute away :(( but the culture there is great. I couldn’t recommend it enough, especially if you’re just starting out or if you’re looking for a new gym in the Plymouth area! Super respectful, I just loved ittt
It was a great experience! I learn different skill to make a top position using bumping up offense people and arm bar skill. Teaching style is very detail to easily understand. Awesome!!
Nice gym. The Instructor is generous and explains techniques clearly and the instruction is very easy to understand. Very welcoming, regardless of skill level.
We had an excellent first visit with my 9 year old son, he is very ADHD and has lots of energy. Normally he gets bored quickly but they kept him so busy that after an hour he thought it was only 15 minutes. He really enjoyed himself and they kept his attention and focus. It's a perfect fit for an energetic boy. One of the other boys even gave him pointers and tips while grappling with him.
I cannot recommend Formula JJ enough. On every front, this far exceeded my expectations. I am a 20 year old woman who had never done Jiu Jitsu in the past, and from the first day I have been treated with so much respect. Everyone is so friendly, and the culture is just incredible. Unfortunately, I have to move away for work, but through only 6 weeks of training with Eric (literally rolled with the head coach a bunch of times, so cool) and the wonderful community at Formula Jiu Jitsu, I have developed so many skills and a real passion for the sport. To anyone considering starting Jiu Jitsu or looking for a gym with a great culture, this is the place for you.
Did a drop in GI class while I was in town for work. They have a great schedule for those who like to train before or after work. I'm currently a purple belt and had a good mix of training partners as well as rolling with professor Eric himself. If you are looking for a solid gym with friendly students and coaches I recommend you check Formula JiuJitsu out.
Phenomenal! Eric has alot of knowledge of the sport, as well as a lot of passion. The setup at Formula is a great way for really learning techniques. Thanks 🤙
I dropped in for some training while on a trip for work. Eric and the members of Formula BJJ welcomed me with open arms. The instruction was top notch the members were an absolute pleasure to work with. It in clear that the folks at formula are passionate about the art and have created a great culture of learning and improving. No matter where you are in your training journey this is a great place to be a part of. Thanks for having me guys!
Eric was so friendly and the facility was top notch. All of the other customers were very friendly too and it seemed like a warm and inclusive environment for male and female customers.
To build mindset, core strength and gain life long skills this place will help sharpen every tool you need to become successful. If you are looking to start or continue your journey in jujitsu I highly recommend stopping by!
I've been training at Formula a year and a half - it's a great place to train both gi and nogi with friendly atmosphere and excellent instruction from coaches Eric and Jacob. Check out the Wednesday fundamentals classes if you're new!
Really enjoying this place. Returning to BJJ after about an 17 year hiatus and this gym and the instructors have made it really easy to get back in. Everyone I’ve met and trained with is humble with no trace of ego. Based on these first three weeks I recommend others come here to train.
Stopped in while on a trip in the area and got to meet Eric(owner) and some of the other students who train there. Formula had a fun, safe and educational atmosphere. I was able to get some good training in and Eric even helped me refine some of the techniques off of a cross collar grip I had previously been working on. Thanks!
Great place to train! If you’re looking for an academy to train Jiu Jitsu Formula is the place to go. Eric is a great instructor and takes his time in teaching. I strongly suggest Formula for kids and adults.
I train at another BJJ gym and trained at FORMULA while visiting family. Great gym, good professors and a friendly training community. I highly recommend this gym, excellent training vibes!!! ✊
Since I was having a good experience at formula, we decided to enroll our 11 year old son. We found the kids program to be a very good environment for him. It is encouraging and competitive. His confidence is growing as a result of this training. Eric has found a great balance of discipline and fun. Eric is actually a good mix of Jonny and Daniel lol! He provides incentives for the kids to stay focused, and retain the technical information.
I am a two months into training and it has been a great experience. Eric is a very good instructor who takes the time to explain and demonstrate the techniques in ways that are understandable for all skill levels. Formula has a healthy culture that challenges and encourages both adults and kids to grow.
Fantastic and welcoming BJJ gym. Coach Eric’s ability to very calmly teach and guide kids who can sometimes become a bit loud or lose focus is unparalleled! Every class he find multiple ways to teach the move of the day, showing it, talking it through, having the kids walk him through the move, and at the end of training demonstrate the lesson for a small prize! If anyone is on the fence about taking their kid to BJJ, hop off the fence and go take the free first class; they will be hooked!
I'm coming up on my first year at Formula, and training here has been a challenging and rewarding experience. My 6yo also trains here in the kids classes, where there is a warm and welcoming environment for practitioners at different levels of skill. They also have a convenient class schedule, including 6am classes Monday through Friday, with a mix of gi and nogi. I recommend Formula to anyone who is starting out in BJJ or who has experience and is looking for a place to train.
Definitely the most welcoming place I have trained at and they care about all of their students. I learned so much, even at my first class, that I hadn't been taught at other places. The teachers compete themselves as well, unlike some other places where the teachers are out of shape or no longer competing. Everyone that trains there is helpful and there is a comraderie within the gym that speaks highly of the atmosphere created by the teachers.
We came from out of town and were looking for a place to train. Both of our kids had an excellent class and the coach was amazing!! Totally recommend trying them out!
Awesome BJJ group with fantastic array of times and solid teachers. Great early morning group full of chill and proficient warriors. John and Eric are great teachers, patient and always ready to explain moves in detail.
Tried the adult intro class; wasn't sure what to expect but it was great! Very clean, which is important (don't want to get ringworm or impetigo 😬). I know very little but Eric did a great job breaking down quite a few basics! Definitely will do more classes!
Stopped by Formula on a visit to the Detroit area last week and really enjoyed the experience. The students and coaching staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and skilled. The gym was clean and had a great atmosphere. I especially enjoyed the availability of mid-day rolling/classes. Definitely check it out if you are nearby!
I love this academy. The environment has been so welcoming as a female, all of the students have really made me feel at home. Great Family Friendly Culture at Formula. 🥋👧💅🏼
This is a great facility with fantastic coaches and training partners. There are multiple senior belts on the mats that are always willing to help you grow you skills and fine tune your technique. The instruction is easy to follow and the instructors are amazingly helpful.
Great place to train! Coaches are knowledgeable, respectful, and responsive to student needs—even hosting 6am classes to accommodate busy schedules. The training partners here are friendly and challenging, best recipe for building your jiu jitsu game!
During Peak Covid my previous gym permanently closed. I found Formula BJJ a little over a year later. I can say I am very grateful. I have family and career demands that make it difficult to find time to train. Formula offers classes early in the morning and weekends that fit my schedule. The atmosphere is very friendly - note that I am 46 years old and I feel quite welcome here. The coaching is excellent. Instructors regularly find time to reach out and instruct specific individuals regardless of experience level. This gym does not feel cliquey in any way. You are welcome to train twice a day or just once a week. Formula is a great gym whether you are a hard core Jiu Jitsu guy or if you are just someone who wants to be in better shape.
Went in to try out a class and had a great time. They were very welcoming, the instruction was very good and I had some fun rolls. I really enjoyed the vibe and will be joining this gym.
I’ve been training with Formula Jiu Jitsu before it became Formula Jiu Jitsu. I drive approximately 45 minutes, passing numerous other academies, just to train here. The instruction provided here is second to none and the people here that share in the experience are simply amazing. If you are looking to train at any level, you will find no better place. Formula Jiu Jitsu is my second home. Just try it, you won’t be disappointed!
Great place to train. Relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Everyone is friendly and the teachers are amazing!!!! Wonderful environment for kids!!! H HIGHLY recommended training here!!!
I, and my two boys, have been with Formula for over two years.
Great culture. Great kids' program. World class instructors with the winning hardware to back it up.
My boys have made strides physically, mentally, and in their jiu jitsu.
Highest recommendation (and get the family discount if you go).
I came to formula BJJ to train with John and Eric while in the area for work. They're both great instructors who love to teach and share their passion for BJJ in both gi and no-gi. Everyone at the gym is really welcoming and friendly and there is a great atmosphere. I'll definitely be back next time I come through town!
My daughter showed up for her very first class and I was blown away by the positive attention that she received. Also, the energy released and exercise that the class provided was beneficial for everyone; kids and parents. Can't wait to come back next week.
Dropped in this evening as I was visiting from out of town. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Coaches were knowledgeable and explained everything in detail. Definitely recommend stopping by here.
I had an awesome time visiting Formula! Chill vibes, excellent instruction, great people. I dropped by while visiting from out of town. 11/10 would recommend. Thanks for the rolls everyone :)
Great people, great welcoming atmosphere, great sportsmanship and great workouts. The instructors Eric and John taking time for every student teaching you BJJ, helping you getting better and improving your skills no matter your are a beginner or an advanced student. Proud being a member and looking forward to my journey with Formula BJJ.
Formula Juijitsu and all other Detroit Juijitsu affiliates are hands down the best juijitsu schools in the area. No matter what kind of athlete you are or what goals you have they can help you better yourself. I should warn you though it's highly addicting. The more you get into juijitsu the less you have a normal life, But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm very happy I found them and got back into it when I did and I strongly suggest that anyone that's interested take advantage of the free week trial.
I signed my son up and he loved it right away. After few training seasons I signed myself up. I’m really happy with everything. Friendly people, great coaches. Highly recommend.
Formula is an excellent gym with great people and a great culture. Affordable, great space, a fairly decent sized class schedule. Easy to get ahold of. Get put into their Facebook group chat for the latest updates. 10/10 would recommend.
I was looking for a jiu jitsu studio that would be good for children and hands down this is it! The instructors take pride in everything they do, and that certainly is passed on to the students. I’d recommend Formula to anyone looking to better their child through martial arts!!
As a female student I feel very welcome. This place has helped me through some tough times and I couldn’t be more grateful. My son trains here as well and I can see his confidence growing with each class. Great teaching and great people.
Great people and a welcoming atmosphere with top quality instruction. Whether you're new to BJJ or want to expand your game and make a run at a world championship, this is the place to be in Metro Detroit. 5 stars!!!
Formula BJJ Academy is the perfect place to start or continue your pursuit of self growth and love of the sport. John and Eric make ever student feel welcome, are well spoken, patient, and extremely knowledgeable. Whether your learning style is hands on, by the numbers, or demonstration, would will get them all during every class. There's no harassment from higher belts, this is a place where people from all walks of life are equal, and only the mat knows the difference. Great atmosphere for women and children as well, truly a family friendly environment. If you're anywhere near the Detriot area and looking for a home to practice BJJ, look no further!
instructors are very nice and patient. they are totally cool with people like me, in their 30s not having a background. Jiu-Jitsu is definitely a challenge but its so fun that becomes rewarding to learn. Great place to learn. Also Eric checks on his students pretty regularly.
I have a 8 and 10 year old that are in the kids class and wanted to compete in Jiu-Jitsu. The coaches are great with them and you can tell they enjoy what they do. They give them confidence in themselves to compete and my kids love training here. They were hooked after the first class.
Formula has a very relaxed atmosphere with training partners ranging from day one beginner to veteran black belts. Someone is always ready to train or answer any question.
When I moved to the area from flint I tried every gym I could find in the area. really probably a dozen different places. once I came to formula I gave up my search. the instruction is great but even beyond that, the people genuinely want to help you better yourself everyday. from day one everyone there has been friendly, welcoming and just great people to be around. I highly recommend formula to everyone looking whether you're just starting or have been training for years
Such an amazing academy! They are so welcoming of beginners and complete newbies! Definitely a safe place to try out your first jiu jitsu class. Great instructors!
Amazing atmosphere and learning environment. Whether seeking a competitor environment, self-defense knowledge, or great exercise, the teaching is top notch.
Edit to original review:
Both of my sons were enrolled, attending twice per week. Then, I noticed a shift in the atmosphere a couple months ago. Previously, the kids classes had a lot of focus on discipline and technique, then they became more about games and just seemed generally unfocused. We stuck with it for a bit, but it wasn't getting better, and some of our favorite coaches were no longer instructing the kids. When we tried to cancel membership, Eric would not return my calls. After the billing cycle, Eric finally returned a call, but to my wife; not to me (all previous correspondence had been with me). He then informed us of the 30-day cancellation policy that is apparently posted on the website. We are sad that what started as a positive experience changed so much for the worse and left a bad taste in our mouth.

My oldest son has been taking gi and no-gi classes here for about 6 months. Coaches John and Eric are very good with the kids and it has been a very positive experience for my son and he is encouraging his younger brother to start.
