Great instructors and fellow students. This would be my third year with 50/50 and I love it here. The owner is cool and actually is at the gym and talks to people. I was having trouble with a simple move when the owner saw me fumble badly so he came over and taught me and he made me put him in a triangle. Another time, we talked about his time at the UFC. This gym has some monsters and you will learn a lot from rolling with these tough SOBs. Everyone is respectful when rolling in jiu jitsu class. They have a badass wrestling coach in David Torado. Real nice coach and really good teacher. I'm really picky about a lot of things but have nothing but good things to say about the gym.
Posted 1 year agoBest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Friendly teachers, great for kids and new learners of all ages. Very supportive instructors. Not expensive.
Fifty/50 is a fantastic gym. The instructors here care to make sure you get the technique right, and they give lots of personal attention and put lots of energy into each class. Coach Jen, Nicki, David, and Devin are great and break down the important details to every move. The environment is well suited for beginners, every staff member is friendly, and I don't know how they keep everything so clean. They must have great janitors too.
Amazing Judo program here run by the Terao brothers(David and Josh).
The best imaginable experience for grownups and kids. It is hard to imagine a culture that so perfectly balances competition and kindness. It is very hard to push people to be their best physically and mentally while also being supportive and inclusive. Fifty/50 has figured it out and anyone with an interest in personal development should give it a try.
Great academy. Great technical instruction. Great vibe of everyone! I dropped in for the Monday Mid day with Coach David. He was detailed and very meticulous with his throw by instruction as well as some work from DLR. Highly recommended if you’re in the area. Facility has showers as well as plenty of space for parking.
This Gym is a really great place to train BJJ (the people attending Kickbox classes look happy too!). The Coaches, People, and the facility are top-notch and I felt immediately welcome and cared for. I highly recommend them to everyone!
A world class gym in multiple facets of martial arts. The level of talent among Fifty/50 instructors is unmatched in the region.
World class gym, world class coaches , and training partners. I highly recommend 50/50 to anyone interested in practicing martial arts.
Great gym, elite level of instruction. Several staff are full time professional grapplers or MMA fighters. Great for ppl of all levels of martial arts, from no experience to to those who've already been practicing their discipline(s) for many years. Diverse class offerings: judo, wrestling, jiu jitsu, striking (mix of boxing, kickboxing). Early morning, lunch, and night time classes available. Kind, honest, supportive and respectful gym culture. I've been training since 2016, but my understanding of the basics and fundamentals of fighting has improved a lot since I've joined this gym in 2021. I wish I had started training here sooner. Also has a great kids program. All the kids coaches are great. The kids are learning from purple belts, brown, and black belt instructors. That's not the case everywhere.
Fifty/50 is a beautiful martial arts gym run by one of the worlds best grapplers, Ryan Hall. This academy has made a tremendous impact on my growth as a martial artist and I’m confident that whether you’re a day 1 practitioner or a seasoned black belt they will make a positive impact for you too. I can’t recommend training at fifty/50 enough.
best place to train in DMV area
This gym is very accessible for a BJJ newbie! Easy to sign up, and the instructors really take the time to help you on your journey. Highly recommended!
I am visiting from Hawaii and wanted to train at Fifty/50. I came straight from the airport after traveling over 10 hours. The lunchtime class was great. Very friendly students and instructors. You must visit if you are in the DC area.
Highly recommend this martial arts academy! Our kids have been going here for about 10 months and love it. Started with BJJ, but then switched to capoeira which they enjoyed more because of the acrobatics. The coaches and staff are really supportive and patient with the kids. The gym is pretty big and they have cameras so parents can observe from the lobby. Parking can be tough if you don't get there early, but there's room on the neighboring side streets which aren't too far away. Typically there's always people leaving between classes so I have always been able to find a stall. The prices are reasonable. Upfront costs may seem high, but it includes the uniform and which they need anyway. Otherwise it's a great price. They also offer discounts for siblings, military, etc.
Loves all of my coaches here. Best place for jiu-jitsu and striking in the the area. The one thing that makes me reconsider relocating out of Virginia is this gym. Will keep training here for as long as I can.
Phenomenal training environment with great, friendly people.
Great place to train. Both bjj and striking program is awesome and taught by great instructors. Everyone is super friendly and the school has a very accommodating schedule
Great trainers... Great training partners... Great support. Beautiful place to learn jujitsu. Thank you everyone.
Great environment both for professional athletes, hobbyists and families. Really focused technique, friendly vibes and heel hooks.
I trained there back when i lived in the states... its hard being a BJJ black belt and still get expert instruction.. Jen Hall was my instructor back in 2016 and boy do i miss her experience.. living in Switzerland now i find it hard to train at an elite level. Do yourself a favor and join this place it can change/Safe your life...
Expert instruction. What else would you want? Maybe some killer training partners? Well that have that too! Go train there!
This is an amazing place to learn BJJ. Great for kids too. Good group of people who quickly learn your name and great every visit.
I dropped in for open mat while visiting the area, and wow, fantastic bunch of technicians. Great training experience!
Absolutely phenomenal place to train!! I am a 2X No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt World Champion and have been practicing jiu-jitsu for 21 years, and I visit 50/50 Martial Arts often and continue to learn!! Ryan Hall, Jen Hall, and the entire staff of instructors are some of the best in the world, and not only that, they are fantastic teachers!! I have never once visited and left feeling I took nothing away. I have improved with each visit!! And to top it all off, everyone is super friendly and welcoming, and they truly have a fantastic family environment that helps build and promote all who are there while still keeping that "old school" mentality which is so important!! Clean academy, amazing instructors, fantastic written curriculum to follow, and a great group of people who will make you feel like family!! I could not recommend 50/50 Martial Arts academy enough!! If you live in Virginia, this is 100% the place to train!!
Great instruction, clean facilities, I was treated very well as a visitor. If you're thinking about trying jiu-jitsu or MMA, start today!
I have been a martial artist all my life and have some family members that have competed at the Olympic and professional level. I have coached many fighters at the amateur and professional level. Some of the people I coached have fought in the UFC. I say all to give more weight to the following: What separates 50/50 MAA is not the location, the space, not the techniques, nor the mascot / guardian of the gates (Leeloo). It is the presentation of the concepts that are the pillars of martial arts. They cross disciplines and without them being GIVEN some people will never get it. All schools can teach a triangle, how to hold somebody in cross side, etc but the concepts of why these things work allow you to develop outside of what you are taught and create new ways of doing things. 50/50 gives you the tools to not just be a student of martial arts but to become a scientist and innovator of the art. All schools can give you and Elementary school education, most can give you an education through high school. Come to 50/50 if you want you PhD and beyond.
Highly skilled coaches who are very detail oriented, students who are very courteous and fun to train with. I would highly recommend Fifty/50 martial arts academy.
Huge mat....even nicer people. The best part about this place is that they have segmented their beginner class - you have a Fundamentals one for people with less than 6 months of experience that is taught by Quinn (an awesome black belt) - then you have fundamentals 2 taught by Jenn (or one of the other black belts) that teaches white belts with more than 6 months of experience. Then you have the rest of the classes. This place is great - can't wait to come back when I get off the road
A Clean, Well-Lighted Place -Friendly Atmosphere -World Class Instruction (For All Levels of Development) -Clean and Spacious Grappling Area You'll choke and be choked, get a great workout and a new perspective on life.
Best BJJ dojo in town! Top notch instructors, very friendly and large class with varied levels of expertise.
Full time academy means there's always a class to fit your schedule. Elite instruction and coaching at 50/50 BJJ has given me the skill and confidence to defend myself when necessary.
I started going to Fifty/50 on January 2016 and it has completely changed my life. I had no prior grappling or martial arts experience and started out in their Fundamentals 1 Class. After about a year of dedicated training, I am now attending their Advanced classes. All of the instructors, Jen Hall, Quinn Mulhern, and of course Ryan Hall, are world class black belt instructors. I also owe a lot of my growth to my training partners who are super helpful in demonstrating proper technique and overall guidance.
Ryan and Jen run a great martial arts dojo!
Great academy! One of the best on the East Coast. My son and I have been training their for for eight months and the training/learning is awesome. The academy is very family oriented and has an outstanding after school program for the kids, plus a summer camp for them as well. Fifty/50 goes above and beyond to ensure all their students are well trained in BJJ by world class professionals!
50/50 is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school which my daughter briefly attended during summer 2015. The kids program is simply amazing. If you're looking for a school with great instructors who are able to able to make the class a fun and enjoyable session then 50/50 hits the mark. With a pedigree coming from Ryan Hall, one the most accomplished jiu-jitsu practitioners in the country, you can be assured that the instructors are passing on high level jiu-jitsu for competition and self-defense. My daughter absolutely loved it here and she misses the good friends she made. Thank you Maia, Ryan and all the 50/50 team for everything you taught Dasha. We're very grateful!!!!
I used to train at Fifty/50 when I lived in the DC area. The instruction was excellent. It’s one of the best BJJ schools in the area. They do a great job teaching fundamentals so you will have a solid base as you progress. The one thing anyone should know going in is it isn’t a school for people who don’t have “thick skin.” Instructors are genuinely encouraging, but they can also be a bit heavy handed/savage if you do something stupid (e.g. unsafe rolling). Ultimately, I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to go in with an open mind, good attitude, and “no quit” mentality.
Stopped by to try a class as my coworker had trained here before. Excellent jiu jitsu training. The only issue, the mats were not clean, so my recommendation, please vacuum and clean your mats.
This is coming from someone with about 5 months experience. I’m not saying it’s a bad gym. But I was sent to the “Fun 1” class because I have less than 6 months experience. I was spinning around in a circle for an hour and a half didn’t even get to spar after as there was a class right after. Never went to a BJJ gym and came out at the same level. Felt like a waste of time. The staff is friendly and everything is clean.
Bad Experience. This gym has a culture of hard work and training which is good for people who want to reach an extremely high level and maybe make this a career. My goals are to get in shape, learn moves, and enjoy training in between managing my career. This is not the gym for me. I dont think it's appropriate to publically call out a student on their first day for sitting out a round 10 minutes into rolling. Glad I tried a class before paying.
Do not train here. The way the owner speaks to students is profane, unprofessional and totally unacceptable. This place also has a ridiculous cancellation protocol. This place also has too many closed days throughout the year for the price they're charging!!!
Fifty/50 GYM STOLE $400 from me! dishonest illegal conduct! I tried their “free trial” session after which I chose not to join membership. I did not sign the contract to become member and I never returned. A few months later i check my credit bill and discover they’ve been charging me monthly. I contact their management for refund and explain their mistake. Manager/Instructor says its not in their policy to deal with ‘old’ charges and that they’ll be oh so generous to cancel future charges to my credit card without charging me a penalty. huh ??? they had gotten my credit card info after the first free trial session, and used it to take $400 from me without me ever joining membership or signing contract with them. All of this I thoroughly explained to Gym management/instructor with proof and still they deny my request, then ignored. So i reported them as fraud to my credit company and credit company reversed all of fifty/50 gym’s past charges on me as fraud and banned the gym from charging me in future. Beware of this gyms free trial. And thank you Chase credit lol. Fifty/50 gym, what a scammy/dishonest/thieving conduct for a martial arts gym
Don’t ever sign a contract with them. Once you could not make it, they would not stop charging you on the card. You cannot contact them from the phone number at all. Be honest people! Don’t try to steal money from others!
I do not recommend this gym... - dirty mats and bathrooms that are never clean, even though they claim to clean them daily. - the owner, Ryan, is rude and unprofessional, he clearly gives preference to certain students. - limited parking space, so good luck finding a spot.
Schedule is not correct, staff shows up late to open and sometimes not at all to scheduled classes.
