Fairfax Jiu-jitsu is amazing. Without a doubt, one of the best places to train Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and Capoeira in Northern Virginia. The instructors are incredible. Very few instructors have the experience that Mark Jones and Sam Kim have earned. Both of them are BJJ Black belt Masters World Champions. Muay Thai coach, Matt Nielsen, is easily one of the most technical and most highly-trained Muay Thai coaches in the U.S. who's frequent trips to Thailand ensure that he's learning the latest techniques to this combat sport. The facility is incredible with all the amenities that a student can ask for including locker room, showers, strength and conditioning area, cardio fitness area, lounge etc.

I started training jiu jitsu here a little over a year and half ago as a guy in his late 30s with no background in martial arts whatsoever. I decided to check out this place initially because of the reviews and I feel it’s definitely lived up to the hype. I love it here. All of the students here are really friendly, helpful, and were welcoming from day one. Coaches Mark, Sam, and (sometimes) Bill, are all really cool guys. They’re also all very knowledgeable, helpful, and each have different teaching styles, body types, training backgrounds, and perspectives. The facility is very clean and has a lot of mat space along with a weight room. I’d highly recommend this place to anyone at any age looking to get started - or anyone in general.

I highly recommend this school! Since day one, everyone that I've interacted with (other students and coaches) have been incredibly welcoming. I think that aspect speaks to the type of environment they're trying to create, which is an environment that's all inclusive. Compared to the last school I was at, where I trained in Krav Maga, the environment at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu is less intimidating, which I find appealing for students who may have never trained before. The coaches are knowledgeable and they don't just show you "moves". They take the time to explain scenarios where you might find a certain finish more appropriate than another or the theory behind why we're doing what were doing in class. Lastly, the gym is well maintained and clean. This is due to everyone pitching in to do their part to keep where they train healthy.

I have been training Muay Thai here for about 2 years. It is a great place to learn authentic Muay Thai. Our trainer has been going to Thailand for well over a decade to learn this stuff from decorated Thai fighters and trainers. You can learn at your own pace. If you just want to train casually and learn the fundamentals, you can do that here. If you are more serious and want to compete, then you will be pushed and given a proper fight camp.

This is an excellent school. The coaches are very knowledgeable and experienced. Fellow students are always friendly and helpful. The environment is welcoming to everyone, no matter the skill level. I started with a free class with zero experience, signed up, and earned my blue belt in 2 years. I would definitely recommend FJJ to anyone looking to learn and train Jiu Jitsu!

Beaming recommendation for this gym to anyone looking to get into grappling or fighting. Instructors are extremely knowledgeable and push you to be the best version of yourself. Unfortunately I moved shortly after joining, but, they honored the refund-policy in the contract since I moved far enough away that wouldn't allow me to attend classes. Great customer service. This place is the real deal and if I ever move back to the area I would re-join in an instant. I would highly recommend this to anyone - if you have kids consider enrolling them in the kids class as well.

I called this place home for several years! (And still do, but have moved out of the area). From the cleanliness of the facility and training areas, to the quality of instruction, to the culture - FJJ is top notch. Expect to be made feel welcome and comfortable on your first class. Whether you're there for self-defense, to get in shape, or to compete, the training will be catered to your goals. If you show up consistently you can expect regular one-on-one instruction and feedback from 3 black belt instructors and numerous upper belts. The muay thai program is awesome as well. Go try it!

This was the first martial arts gym I visited, and after my first class it never even crossed my mind to look elsewhere. My first class (where I had absolutely no idea what I was doing) was with one of the two main blackbelts, Coach Sam, who started class with an INTENSE and exhilarating workout. I had no ideas I had so many sore muscles I had never worked out before. After getting my payment in order, I enrolled as quick as I could. My next class I met the other head coach, Mark, whose intense and always fun style of teaching makes you feel like you're immediately part of the team, and you're going to work. At open mats and when drilling with partners, there will always be belts of every color eager to help you hone any aspect of your game. Teammates will always be there to make sure you get back what you put into your training. If you're a first timer considering singing up for a free class, come check it out! Even if you decide it isn't for you, you'll spend an evening making friends, getting a workout, and learning to defend yourself. Plus the logo for the school is badass.

Fairfax Jiu Jitsu was not the first gym I came to when I was looking for a place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but it was easy to see from the get-go that it would be the last stop on my list. At all of the other gyms I tried I felt like an outsider, like the ‘new guy’. At Fairfax Jiu Jitsu, I was greeted by several students who introduced themselves and showed genuine interest in meeting me as soon as I sat down on the bench before my trial class. This culture, without a doubt, trickles down from the positive team spirit and lightheartedness that Coach Sam Kim and Coach Mark Jones emulate on a day to day basis. Their vast knowledge of BJJ and martial arts in general gives them the ability to take some very complicated concepts and break them down into simple, digestible movements for beginners. Their teaching format lends itself well rounded, fundamentally strong students. I was a student at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu for a little over 2 years. Living in Ashburn, there were several gyms closer to my home but none had the high quality of coaches, teammates, and facilities that FJJ has. Training at FJJ helps to build confidence, stay in shape, and meet some really fantastic people while you’re at it. While I have recently moved to Colorado for work and can no longer train at FJJ (that commute is just a little too long), I know that when I come back to visit all of my teammates and coaches will welcome me back onto the mat with open arms and open guards :-)

Was looking to do MMA and train to be a competitive fighter. Did a trial class in multiple academies around the northern Virginia area including Yamasaki and Kaizen. Came to Fairfax Jiu Jitsu and it was much different, you're treated more like a team mate and family rather than a customer. After joining, you start to realize how overwhelming martial arts can be and these guys do a great job of breaking things down to simplify and teach. Coaches Mark Jones and Sam Kim are both super friendly as well as all the students in the gym, if you're intimidated by starting a martial art and have no idea where to start, come by this gym as a trial and see the difference in coaching. I am definitely staying a student here for as long as I stay in the NOVA area.

I am from out of town, visiting. I tried several local bjj places and found coach Sam to be very welcoming and professional. I rolled with maybe ten people there and found them very skilled but also careful. One guy tweaked my elbow but that's on him not the school. Watch out if there's a train... The place is clean and big, lots of focus on calisthenics, drilling, then some free rolling in the anvil classes. Shower, store. Locker room. Good kids program. The cost we agreed on for my short term stay was fair. The teacher of some of the classes is Mark and he's great as far as I can see, great skills and knowledge and very funny. In the Fairfax area this is the gym I chose and would choose again from the available schools.

This place is family to me. Fairfax Jiujitsu was the first and only academy I visited when I decided I wanted to get into jiujitsu. I had my trail class and knew it was the location for me. Now BJJ is a big part of my life. If you go to FJJ you've made a legit choice. Even if you go in not sure you want to do bjj, Fairfax Jiujitsu will show you why you should. Mark and Sam are some of the most influential people in my life, and they teach me a lot. It's not an easy sport, especially if you get into competitions, but the members of FJJ are fun and welcoming. Everyone has different styles, and they're all willing to share what they know to help you get better. Also facility wise it's one of the bigger gyms in the area. I've been to open mats at other gyms, and FJJ is lucky to have the space they do.

My 7 year old son joined Fairfax Jiu Jitsu in May 2018. I was very hesitant at first because I had no idea what I was signing my son up for and what this can do for him besides self defense. Here we are, 4 months later, every penny spent in this class is absolutely work it. Hands down the best kids program. The coaches not only teach the kids martial arts but also help them develop skills and strong characters through the Forge Character program. Coach Sam, Coach Mark and the other trainers are absolutely amazing with kids. My son loves to train and always look forward to going to class everyday. I highly recommend Fairfax Jiu Jitsu.

I joined FJJ late January 2017, here i am a year later still at the gym training 4-5 times a week. The thing that makes this gym special is the family atmosphere, within a week i felt as if i was apart of the team and started hanging out with teammates outside the gym. The coaches are amazing and have taught me a lot about coaching which i use for coaching different sports like basketball. This is the perfect gym for adults or kids to try if you are new to martial arts, the people are fun and make you want to come in everyday.

I'm coming up on 10 months of training at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu and my only regret is that I hadn't started sooner. Prior to my first class, I was anxious. It can be intimidating trying something new. But that anxiety soon left, because the culture inside Fairfax Jiu Jitsu is amazing. The coaches are all approachable, the students as well, and it makes for a welcoming atmosphere. The facility itself is also top notch, everything is always clean and there is a good amount of mat space. If you're looking for a way to get into better shape, or a way to test yourself with something new, all while being part of a team, I can't recommend FJJ enough.

Not once, but twice, as I walked down relatively populated roads, I walked in to a confrontation between couples. In both cases, the female was screaming and crying for her partner to get off of her, while the latter only held more tightly and struggled more aggressively. My reaction to both of these impactful encounters was one of rage—why was there such a willful indifference to this public violence?!—as well as one of overwhelming guilt and inadequacy; I am a witness to this aggression, and yet the only thing I can physically do is walk away and stay uninvolved, for my own safety. In my alternate universe, I would rip off my civilian clothes and reveal my superhero suit, pull the man off his sobbing girlfriend, protect myself against his counter attack, and be able to convince him with my magical eloquence that violence against any other being is wrong. I don’t expect the art of jiu jitsu to equip me with these superpowers, but I did walk in to Fairfax Jiu Jitsu hoping to gain at least the confidence and ability to never be physically (or emotionally) controlled in the way I witnessed. What I walked into, however, provided me with so much more. Fairfax Jiu Jitsu is not just a gym one goes to to learn self-defense—it is a community that one is welcomed into to learn a life philosophy that permeates all interactions both on and off the mat. This philosophy is one of patience, humility, passion, persistence, hard work, consistency, mentorship, integrity, and respect. Moreover, this is no coincidence. The Coaches carefully create a culture that transmits dedication, hard-work and team-work. They strive to develop our human potential, and guide us in our journey to expand our physical abilities by surpassing the limits of our capricious minds. They invest in our development not only as martial artists, but as colleagues in on the path towards fulfilment and growth—a path that is not void of obstacles but interprets these obstacles as opportunities and test. At Fairfax Jiu Jitsu, I deepened the understanding that I am in control of my reaction to external stimuli; it is my choice whether to accept challenges with a welcoming smile or with a defeated frown. It is my choice to approach a goal with appreciative patience or with disdainful haste. Ultimately, while for the past six months I have been learning Jiu Jitsu techniques, positions, submissions, and escapes, these have been permeated with the lessons of patience, humility, growth, acceptance, and resilience. These lessons do not stay on the mat, dear reader. These lessons subsist throughout daily setbacks and trials. The beauty of Fairfax Jit Jitsu is that these lessons are not just passed down from Coach Sam, Coach Mark, Coach Bill, Coach Matt, or Coach Yara. Teammates are not just training partners, they are friends and colleagues who, despite the understanding that, after each roll, one would best the other, are nonetheless selfless in sharing their knowledge, their experience, their approach. As teammates, communication, understanding, openness, and welcoming reign the red mats that teach us humility and respect. I don’t apologize in writing paragraphs of praise for this haven, home, and school. If you already had the patience, I would be writing a whole book on my positive experiences, encounters, lessons, and relationships at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu. If you got nothing else out of my confession of love for the place, understand that I have been driving (through DC traffic, no less!) all the way from Silver Spring, Maryland, in order to reach this home almost daily for six months. That should be proof enough of the physical, emotional, and mental training I undergo every time at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu

I've been training BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA at Fairfax for about a year and a half. The thing that I've noticed the most is that my skills have improved greatly ever since I started . I attribute this to the excellent instructors. Their curriculum and class structure is well thought out, and their approach is geared towards training smart in order to get the most out of every session. They also have a great facility and a wealth of solid training partners of all skill levels. I recently had my first MMA fight and I was surprised at how prepared I felt, both physically and mentally. I would definitely recommend Fairfax Jiu Jitsu to anyone looking to start or continue their martial arts journey.

This is a truly outstanding community of coaches and students. They have created a culture of hard work ("no excuses, no shortcuts"), and support. Everyone is given the attention and encouragement to excel. The coaches are awesome: experienced competitors who continue to go to the top training gyms around the globe in order to grow and keep up to date in their art. Fairfax Jiu Jitsu has been a home for me since April 30, 2014. I walked in with hardly any martial arts experience and didn't have any expectations other than getting a good workout. I tried a free BJJ class and the rest is history. Not only did I get a good workout, but all the students and instructors were very welcoming and very helpful. FJJ has become family to me. This is a school that you can trust to have your back and have your best interests in mind when it comes to your training and your own personal development. The culture here is very welcoming to any student whether they are a beginner or an expert because of their superior technical instruction, their personal interest in the growth of each student, and the values and principles that the instructors have established here that are beneficial on as well as off the mat. My son joined the Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program at FJJ in 2010. He has spent more time at FJJ than any other place besides home and school, so his coaches have played an important role in his development, not just as an athlete, but as a person. FJJ has become such an integral part of Nick’s life, that even after moving farther away, we never had a second thought about where he should continue to train and grow. The facility is big and clean with a lot of air circulating which I appreciate as a spectator not participating in the training. The parents are friendly and well behaved; you won’t see parents yelling from the sideline at their children or other children. If they come in yelling in the beginning, they quickly learn that FJJ doesn’t promote or tolerate that type of environment. But what impresses me the most is how the instructors manage the balance of discipline, challenge, and fun in the classes. You won’t see kids running around screaming and out of control, except for after class when they have some free time to play, but in class they are focused and working hard, even the little ones. They promote mentorship which helps the older kids feel responsible for helping the younger kids and the younger kids look up to the older kids. It creates an environment where the children learn that it is not just about themselves, but about helping each other grow. Since the first day Nick joined FJJ, BJJ has been his passion. It has taught him to win and lose gracefully, be respectful, stay humble, work hard, and set priorities. The skills he has learned on the mat has transferred to life outside of FJJ. He is competitive on the mat and just as competitive in his class to get good grades, he is respectful to his parents and his teachers, and he stands up for kids who can’t stand up for themselves without getting in a physical altercation. Over the past five years, he has grown physically and mentally strong. He cares about his team mates and FJJ has become more like a family than a place to train. The dedication and commitment from the Instructors grow stronger every year as does the program. We are very satisfied parents and are extremely glad to have accidentally walked into FJJ five years ago.

As a parent of a kid in the BJJ kids class, all I can say is that this place is awesome! This is the 4th martial arts place I have signed my kid up at looking for a self defense hobby for him and both my kid and I love it and it's the best out of the 4. It's not one of those bullshit buy-a-belt places, no crazy ego driven instructors and no crappy staff (all of which I've had to deal with before). It's a great place with great people! Good amount of kids in the kids class and classes are run very very well. Coach Mark Jones does an incredible job with the kids! You can tell he really enjoys working with them. And my kid really likes and respects Coach Mark. We checked out a few BJJ spots in Fairfax County after we moved to the area and a couple things I noticed in comparison was that this place is huge and they also have plenty of seating for parents to watch the classes. Both other places were much smaller and one place had no seating to watch the classes. But, it was the difference in the quality of the class that made us select this place. We've been here just over 7 months and I'm still convinced we picked the right place. My son has def become Jiu-Jitsu minded since starting here, watching BJJ videos on youtube and practicing moves at home. He never took to any other martial art the way he's taken to BJJ and I give full credit for that to Coach Mark. My kid recently competed in his first tournament and brought home 2 gold medals by winning both of his divisions. That's the kind of instruction they can get if they come with a willingness to learn, pay attention and listen to what Coach Mark tells them to do. I look at some of the kids who have been here a long while and their skills are incredible. So with everything considered, like I said at the beginning of this review, this place is awesome! Luckily I live close but there are some parents that brings their kids from pretty far away. And with NOVA traffic that's really saying something.

I have been an athlete all of my life playing just about every sport involving some sort of ball, but in terms of martial arts, I am a newbie. This gym was my second (and probably final) attempt at getting into Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I had previously taken a handful of introductory lessons at another gym in the area, but my experience was not great. When you are an absolute beginner, the social anxiety of drilling with strangers who are also much more experienced than you can be daunting. While I felt like an outsider at my first gym, Fairfax Jiu Jitsu has always been a friendly and welcoming environment. Coaches Mark Jones and Sam Kim are both extremely friendly, charismatic, and knowledgeable. They really make the experience fun, while emphasizing growth and determination. Jiu-jitsu can be stressful, but it's easier to push through frustration and difficulty when you feel part of a team. The colored belts are also very friendly and helpful. There are students of just about every age, gender, and ethnicity. If you're a competitive person, students from FJJ perform very well in tournaments and the Coaches take a very structured approach to preparing students for them. In terms of the facility, it is much larger than other gyms I have visited. This allows for a large number of students to train at the same time. There is always someone to drill/spar with, allowing you to really dive deeply into jiu-jitsu if that is your desire. They have a weight room, multiple large mats, and striking areas as well. Everything is well maintained and hygienic. In addition to jiu-jitsu they also offer Muay Thai, and Capoeira classes. Additionally, I believe they are moving to an even larger/improved facility in the near future. I highly recommend jiu-jitsu to anyone. The benefits are far greater than simply learning how to defense yourself. While that is reason enough for many people to start, the personal growth opportunities, both physical and mental cannot be understated. There are social benefits as well. As a 30 year old who works full time in an office setting, it becomes increasingly difficult to make new friends. Jiu-jitsu is the perfect way to expand your social circle, while improving yourself in every way. If you struggle with depression, there is no better cure than jiu-jitsu. Intense cardio leading to increased dopamine production, novelty through learning new techniques on a continuous basis, and a sense of community. If you're a friendly person, I highly recommend Fairfax Jiu-jitsu as a great place to start.

I came to Fairfax Jiu Jitsu over a year ago looking for some martial arts training, unsure of exactly what form I was looking for. I had studied several forms over the years and was looking for something for the "long haul." Fairfax Jiu Jitsu was a bit of a drive but looked good and they offered a two week trial period to try out any classes I wanted. I was hooked almost immediately by the instructors (my primary instructor is Dave "The Rock" Jacobs). Every single one was completely unique in style and approach but all were dedicated, patient and really "walked the walk." Without a doubt these guys are the real deal who still compete internationally (consistently bringing home the gold) and are top notch instructors which ensures that Fairfax Jiu Jitsu continues to attract an amazing and ever expanding group of students. Most importantly, the instructors embody the ideals of dedication, hard work, teamwork, good sportsmanship and honor which is a quality that is really hard to find. Every time you step on the mat there is an entire supportive and awesome team behind you. Definitely the best martial arts training I have ever experienced.

I was originally referred to FJJ by a friend and quickly understood why. The excellent instructors/owners have created a top flight academy with a positive and constructive atmosphere. From the very first day, despite a large group with deep experience levels, I never felt like an outsider. On the contrary, I immediately felt like "one of the students". Since then, my BJJ game has grown consistently each week. Most importantly, I have found a training family: a group of people who are constantly driving each other to get better. In Northern VA, its very easy to find a school that misses the point. Martial arts, in their basest and purest forms, are about caring for and protecting others. It's refreshing to find a school that finally gets it right.

I've always wanted to explore a martial art but wasn't quite sure what would fit for me until I learned about capoeira, then had a hard time finding a place that offered it. I am so lucky that I found it at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu, where the environment, teachers and students are experienced, friendly and encouraging. Trying a new physically demanding activity for the first time as an adult can be very daunting and I believe if I'd tested my boundaries at any other gym I would not have stayed. I'm thankful for the family/team atmosphere with FJJ and would encourage -anyone- to try something new here!

Great school, great people and great fighters. My son and I go here and I can’t begin to tell you the difference in the level of training and moreso the learning environment. My son and I were with another academy for years and it was close to my home and work, but something was lacking. Once I found FJJ, I found the missing piece to the puzzle and I made the switch. Even tho it was a bit further, the distance didn’t matter because the environment, training, teachers and students made it a place where you want to be even if you have to sacrifice a little time. My son and I are so lucky to be learning from trained professionals and training hard with accomplished athletes who devote their time to every student. The kids program is phenomenal and their instructors are world class. Such a happy bunch of children who are learning and having fun with each other….and that’s the most important thing. Whether you’re in it for getting into shape or taking it to a competition level….this is the place to be!

Great Place for Capoeira and Jiu Jitsu!! Nice and neat space, family environment, happy people ,very nice prices!!! Me and my daughter are loving to do Capoeira Abada classes ! The Teacher Yara is very professional, technical and funny too! My daughter loves to play the drums and sing Capoeira songs!! Besides classes, the Capoeira has tons of outdoors activities what bring us together as a family!! Loving it!

Tried a Capoeira class. A very inclusive facility that is spread out and very friendly. The instructor is extremely knowledgeable. The facility allows for all levels and provides very helpful feedback. Doing "cartwheels" was a great mental and physical experience! Definitely give them a try!

This gym offers good foundation for skills at the beginner level. Unfortunately, being an isolated gym, the instructors no longer train in BJJ and offer the same lessons that cycle on 8-9 week schedule. The gym feels like a business first atmosphere. They are aggressive to sign you up on your first day (6 month contract minimum). The beginners program offers no live sparring and it is not until you are invited to the 2nd level that sparring becomes part of the curriculum. The 2nd level had a 1 year minimum period. There is also a 3rd level invitee only level that has a 2 year contract, but I did not progress that far. There is a problem with upper belts retention and in my short time there, I witnessed a number of upper belts leave or cross train at other gyms. I also never recall any upper belts signing up as a new student that we're blue belt of higher. The black belts are in the gym for their scheduled classes only (you rarely if ever see Mark and Sam on the mat at the same time). This is a 2 star review because in spite of the shortcomings and business minded approach, they do offer a good environment for newcomers from a safety and friendly standpoint. The gym itself is spacious and larger than other gyms I've been too, but Sam does run his equipment shop attached and subtly pushes his gi stock to the students. Unfortunately, the repeditive nature and lack of outside involvement/investment in it's students left me feeling like little more than a source for their income.

Very business oriented. There is no schedule on the website so you have to call or email them and they will try to get you in for the free trial. The bjj instructors dont list who they got their black belts from which I have never seen before.
