Many friends recommended this Bjj location, and now we see why. Great first experience coming in at ages 13,11 & 8. The owner has a great balance of discipline, firmness, yet playful spirit. My kids came in timid and have completed 3 months with a new sense of confidence which is a testament to the great staff & encouraging coaches (standouts are Coach Cody & Coach Tad). The price brackets for siblings is great for large families, the location is convenient, the free trial class was great to see if it fit in our schedule, bathroom/changing facilities are clean, and the sense of community is one of a kind.
Alpha Jiu-Jitsu has been an amazing experience! The welcoming environment, complete with spots for younger siblings to play or for parents to connect to Wi-Fi and work, makes it family-friendly and convenient. The coaches are respectful, encouraging, attentive, and have helped my daughter grow tremendously—highly recommend! You can tell that the team there strives for very high standards, and it shows. GREAT BJJ GYM IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO TRAIN WHILE VISITING FROM OUT OF TOWN!! From the moment I walked in off the street, Professor Tad was warm and welcoming. The facilities were adequate and clean: two private restrooms, three changing room booths, and onsite laundry for house gis. In the back appeared to be traditional garage-gym equipment, a climbing wall, and even a spiral tube slide for the kiddos. My travel schedule allowed for just one 90 minute fundamentals class but it was so enjoyable that I was talked into the open mat session that weekend. Special thanks to Coach Chris, Mike, his wife Chelsea, Paul, John, and Logan from the class. Additionally, thank you to Professor Tarek, Mike’s coworker friend Professor Andrew, Professor Nick, Matt, and Alex for the open mat rolls. Despite the plethora of BJJ options in the area, there seems to be a cohesiveness among them that is admirable. I would gladly take my wife and two daughters back here to train if ever we are in the area. Alpha Jiu-Jitsu checks all the boxes.

If you are looking for top-tier blue chip Jistu instruction you must come here. Tad runs an informative class for beginners, but is also geared towards upper belts looking to get after it. I love the way we roll here as this studio does have a more mature cliental. It’s professional, yet laid back, it’s fun, yet focused and I always walk out knowing I just got 1% better at Jiu Jistu and that makes me want to come back the next day.

Just started my 4yo only Russian speaking child in this gym, and he joyfully joins the group every time we are there. Absolutely supporting and navigating coaches and family members and older children who assist everyone with directions and moves throughout the process. I just couldn't be more happy that this is the first club we have tried, and we had found our "spot." Thank you all who helped our child transition into this new sport🤗

Best place for Kids jujitsu in NOVA are. All the coaches are amazing and know well how to connect with the kids. I love that they teach kids the same way as adults jujitsu and gave the kids a watered down version of BJJ. My kids love it there and we consider Alpha team our second family Highly recommend it
*Alpha BJJ recently moved to a new location a block from their old one. The new facility has at least double the mat space, exercise area, break room, shower, multiple bathrooms, kids climbing wall and play area, and a lot more seating for parents and spectators. Top notch training regiment, instruction, and the location is great. I've trained with Tad at the gym and on my own personal time and can tell you he cares about your jiu jitsu. When one person excels, everyone in the gym excels, right? Personal attention will be given if your technique is in need, unlike a lot of other gyms that show a technique a few times and hope you retain the information. The instructors will also roll with the students during sparring, which can help improve your game one roll at a time! Came here as a complete beginner. The whole community is very welcoming and generous. I never was left to feel lost. Overall it is both great fun and great physical exercise with fast paced yet thorough instruction.
I had an awesome experience training here as an out of towner. There is no drop-in fee, which makes it super accessible, and the welcoming environment matches that policy. I made it in for two classes, gi and nogi, and really enjoyed the instruction. I found the nogi class on bodylock passing particularly good. The adult classes are 1.5 hours, and the last thirty minutes is all rolling. I had a great experience sparring, everyone I rolled with had a good attitude and nobody was cranking submissions. I look forward to training here again next time I am in town!

This is a great place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu whether you have never trained a martial art or you are a seasoned grappler. Everyone wants you to help you learn and are willing to help you get better. The sense of community really sets this place apart. There is summer camp, multiple kids classes for different ages, a women's class, and an adults class. There is typically a monthly movie night for the kiddos. A typical adults class is 10-15 mins of warm-ups, 45 mins of group instruction from a black belt and working with a partner, and then 30 mins of sparring. They are moving to a larger, better facility in the next few months which will provide even more value to members (they're not displacing very far away though). For what it's worth, I was able to save money on the (very small amount of) required equipment for this martial art because they have discounts with equipment dealers (e.g. 40% off a Gi). An adult membership is currently $149/month (if 15 years old or more I believe). Edit: Changed Gi discount to reflect accuracy per owner's reply

Pros: fun, family atmosphere, experienced coaches that can deal w/young children, great value (# of classes/wk, movie nights, and parties?!), training your child to be able to handle themselves in uncomfortable situations for the rest of their lives. Cons: when they play dodgeball, only the coaches gets to chuck those soft squishy balls at the lil monsters.. jk jk...of course most parent's aim wouldn't be as good...would need a whole basket of them!

Alpha BJJ has an amazing kids program for all levels whether your child is interested in competing or just having fun. The coaches Tad and Ben are excellent at making the kids feel comfortable no matter the age or ability. There are monthly events for the kids like movie nights and occasional other activities like river rafting that the kids love. I have one kid and soon to be two kids in their program. I train during the day at another school because its when I have availability and occasionally make it to their Friday evening adults fundamentals class. They always teach solid technique and I like going there to get murdered (in the most positive way 😂) by their upper belts who are all great training partners. I have never felt like anyone there was trying to hurt/injure me and it is a super cool and positive environment. They have adults also who compete (and win) at all levels. If you are a female interested in jitz, they have a women's class taught by a current world champion level female competitor every Friday also. I can't say enough positive things about the programs and people there. Highly recommend if you are anywhere close by checking out the school!
Coach Tad and Ben are very good. They have an incredible ability to provide children with BJJ instruction that a child can easily comprehend in a fun environment and to nurture a child's confidence. We are very thankful for Alpha BJJ and highly recommend it to everyone.
Great gym. My husband started here a few weeks ago with no experience with BJJ at all. The owners, staff, and class members have been so informative and welcoming. Also looks like they have a great kids program that we plan on getting our kids into.

Alpha is an incredible JJ club, it’s not only a martial arts gym but a wonderful caring community. From the incredible coaches, to the parents that volunteer to help coach the little ones. I am so grateful for all the coaches who not only coach JJ but teach the children how to be better young adults. My son has been with Alpha for a little over a year and he has come such a long way! From constantly getting in trouble to being an incredible and respectful young man. Tad has the patience of a saint and coaches the children in all aspects of life. So thankful for finding Alpha, and a place my son WANTS to go to to learn! FYI they are sooo reasonably priced since their goal is not profit but to educate and coach children, young adults and adults in all aspects of JJ.

Coming up on my daughters one year at alpha BJJ Some thoughts - excellent kids program - organized, lots of participation by other parents and coaches - clean! - offers a competitive atmosphere and a casual environment - coach Tad & Ben has so much patience for the kids - daughter look forward to going to BJJ - no upselling, focused on the kids and not selling you - almost a 50% ratio of girls to boys in the kids class, which is very impressive The hype is real! Amazing place for kids to learn how to be confident and brave. Impressed and will be participating for a long time to come.
This place where my brother and I have trained at is awesome. The community is fun and welcoming. We were always looking forward to the classes to do drilling and sparring with friends. The people I have trained with have great sportsmanship and are just good people. Even though we moved we still love the community.
I am taking my daughter to this place for a few months now. I like the teachers and how the place is managed. Unlike other martial art places, this place seems more focused on teaching the kids and making sure they are having fun, instead of making money any way they can. The place is quite informal and thank goodness for that.
The absolute nicest people in the world. We are traveling to a Jujitsu competition and a competitor left his Gi at home. They were fast to offer help and supplied him with one. They were in the middle of a class and helped us.

We have been going to AJJ for a little more than a year and our kids love it!! Ages 9 and 7. It’s a great place to bring siblings. Great for boys and girls of mixed ages. Great instructors. And they have a women’s only class, mom can join!
My eldest son (7)have been going to alpha bjj for almost 2 years. My youngest son (5) have been going for half a year. They both love the class, the lessons, the teachers , and their piers. They learned a lot and the training has help my son learn to be confident and build structure and also fun for the children. It’s not treated like a business and there’s a lot of Comradery. There’s a lot of extra events outside of jujitsu that our kids get involved in, like bbq, water rafting, Halloween parties. My husband started taking jujitsu as well to be more involved and enjoys the classes as well and everyone he’s trained with.
I started off as a complete beginner but everyone was super patient with me and made me feel comfortable from day 1. Everyone is super accommodating to whatever your skill level maybe even if you look like a baby giraffe on the mats!

Just started with Alpha, and I couldn't be more pleased with the instructors and the atmosphere. The instructors are great with my 10 year old daughter, patient and encouraging, and they everyone is tolerant of my poor conditioning and encourage me without judgement. Everyone has been friendly and welcoming to us. The instruction is well organized and clear with adequate time spent learning and practicing before additional techniques are introduced. Opportunities to put your new knowledge into practice are given during the supervised sparing. All in all a fantastic experience so far.

I have two kids that have been going here since they open and they love it!! Coach Tad and all the other coaches do a phenomenal job teaching the techniques and also making it fun for the kids. This is the one activity where the kids know the schedule and want to come early for class. Everything they learn has helped them be competitive at tournaments and they tell me to enter them in the upcoming tournaments because they love the competition and want to improve. I highly recommend this school to anyone and everyone that is interested. You will not be disappointed training here!

As a female with no martial arts experience, I wasn't sure what to expect and had some trepidation. However, all the coaches are extremely professional, accommodating and kind. I've never once been made to feel like I shouldn't be there as a "newbie", and even my fellow classmates, regardless of their gender or experience level, have been supportive and helpful. At this point, Alpha has become a second home to my entire family, and we look forward to continued technical and personal growth under the tutelage of the staff.

I Cannot say enough good things about Alpha BJJ, especially the people there. My 8 year old son and I started a few months ago with zero experience and expectations. Starting with the kids classes, I was impressed by the number of tenured and highly skilled students but most importantly the instructors. My kid comes home everyday gushing about Tad, Ben and the new friends he's made. The level of respect the kids show each other regardless of their skill or belt level I felt truly reflects the essence of Jiu jitsu. I've seen older higher belts patiently encourage and work with my son and that's exactly the level of respect I wanted him to learn. A few months into his training I can already see a major shift in his confidence and focus. As for me, coming in as an adult in my 30s was a huge personal challenge. If I can offer one word of advice: check your ego at the door and prepare to be humbled in the best way possible. The sport will test you physically and mentally but along the way something clicks and that helplessness becomes empowerment and you'll have the most supportive team of people helping you along the way. The bonds and friendships you make in such a short period of time is like nothing I've experienced before. Someone once told me the Jiu jitsu world is like a cult and I couldn't agree more cause I'm drinking the Kool-aid hard!

Absolutely would recommend this place to anyone and especially to someone who wants their kids to learn jiu jitsu. Tad is one of the best kid instructors in the area... he makes it fun. He even teaches 4 (even younger) year olds which requires A LOT of patience and planning... as kids this age don't just sit still. All of the kids have lots of fun while being kids and learning good jiu jitsu. Adults are not overlooked either! Abmar and Vaji provide solid classes and very very knowledgable
Great rolls and excellent instruction. I met Tad, the instructor, at a couple local tournaments and came off as a chill dude who knew what he was talking about. Decided to stop by and train to get some new looks in rolling. I've been training/competing in BJJ for about 4 years and felt like each roll at Alpha was a tough and grinding roll that helped my game progress. The training partners were pleasant and seemed to help students who were just starting out without hesitation. I recommend this school for young & old (excellent kids program though) and for people who are just starting out in BJJ to people who have been rolling for a while. I will definitely be dropping in for future rolls. OSS.
Great facilities, friendly people, solid workouts and they won’t try to sell you a membership. I’m in college and wanted to train somewhere over Winter break, but many gyms won’t allow a single month membership. Tad, the owner of the gym, was very lenient and accommodating.

I've been signedup for about a month now. Everyone is very welcoming, no hard sales push. Great instruction as well. No matter what level you, you can learn something and have a good time and challenge yourself. Adult classes are not crowded which is really nice. No matter what the question is the instructors make time to answer, and you will not feel dumb even asking the most basic of questions. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Our family has really enjoyed Alpha jiu Jitsu! It’s been over 8 months since we started. I do the women’s only class on Fridays and I love it! Coach Marysia is the best, literally! She does such a great job at teaching us and giving us the little details to help us achieve success with our submission, sweeps and passes! So thankful to have her as my coach! 💗 My youngest is in the 4-5 yr old class, I have three in the fundamental class and my oldest does the advanced classes as well. I can’t stress enough how important it is for the kids to have beginner and advanced classes. It was one of the main factors we came to Alpha! I believe it is essential to help the kids improve and stay focused. All the coaches are incredible and do an excellent job at keeping the kids engaged and disciplined during class! My husband has just recently started the adult classes, and I have joined him as his drilling partner! :) So fun to do together! 👍🏼 I love the fact that we are able to learn jiu Jitsu as a family! My kids have been attending Alpha BJJ for 1.5 years now after a friend referred us here. Coach Tad and ALL the instructors are awesome. They focus on teaching good techniques but don't forget about having fun while doing it!
Ive taken my kids to a couple jiu jitsu schools in the area and i can say this is the best place for kids. My kids have learned more here and had more fun doing it than anywhere else.
Alpha is a positive, structured, safe and supportive environment for kids to learn this sport. The instructors are skilled and take the time to teach and reinforce each skill until the students are able to perform them well. Our children play multiple sports and the experience here has been nothing, but positive. That isn’t always the case with youth sports these days. If you’re looking for a place for jiu jitsu, Alpha is where to go.
My 4 year old daughter asks to come to class everyday since she enjoys the classes so much! Great group to be a part of! The coaches are great with the kids and they learn so much from beginning to advance skills! Highly recommended!
Adult Program I have been doing Jiu-Jitsu 6+ years. I just started at Alpha 3 weeks ago. It has been a blast. Everyone is very welcoming. This is a great workout, helps relieve stress after a long work day, and teaches a vital skill. It's never to late to learn. I started at 30 years old, and I have friends that started in their 50's. Just come in and give it a try. Kids Program I showed up early one day and watched the kids class. The coaches did an amazing job with the kids. All the kids sat patiently listening to their coaches then they dud exactly what was asked of them. If you want your kids to learn patience, discipline, relieve stress, or learn how to defend yourself bring them in to try a class.
This gym was beyond welcoming when we arrived in Virginia looking for a new gym to call home away from home. The owners Ben and Tad have huge hearts and care about you and your family. Vaji and Tad are very knowledgeable in the sport and have a real laid back, funny personality which makes you feel comfortable to be around. If you or you someone you know is looking to be apart of something special I highly recommend this gym.
I have been attending classes here for a few months now, and really can't say enough good things about Alpha! The culture at the gym is welcoming to people of all levels, the instructors are expertly helpful and legitimately care about your personal progression, and the facility itself is equally high-quality. My teammate and I were traveling and dropped in for a Wednesday night class. Super friendly gym. Tad taught class. Great techniques and good rolls! I'll definitely train here again when I'm back in town!
It’s always good to write a review after you’ve used a product for while— it ensures its quality wasn’t a sham. I’ve been training at Alpha for a month now, making sure to attend at least 4 days a week. After attending 20+ sessions I can claim to have been greeted with an energy and brotherhood/sisterhood I once experienced only in the military. All the folks here are caring, compassionate and are dedicated to helping you whether you’re a D-1 wrestler transitioning to the Jiu-Jitsu world or a new comer who’s never grappled a day in your life. The owner Tad is very much hands on ensuring your training and progress is where it should be, and most of all, that your happy and safe! This is a far cry from some other much larger facilities that are more interested in the bottom line than they are the progress of an individual. I would know because I was there once. There are guys here that are the real deal (veteran practitioners who compete regularly), and others like myself who are just starting out and trying to learn the sport. I often show up early to practice to watch Tad and the other instructors train the children and teenage classes that proceed the adult class. The energy is great, kids are happy, and one gets the sense the parents are very pleased as well. Once my kids are old enough, they’ll be joining me. A few of the regulars who bring their children in stay for the adult classes themselves. It’s helpful that they have an area for children to hang out while their parents roll. Needless to say, Alpha is a family. From the parents on the sideline watching their little ones to those competing in jiu Jitsu , everyone feels like they’re part of the family. I strongly suggest anyone interested in This great martial art to make Alpha your home!
