Just signed my 14 year old son up after a couple of free trial classes. Studio is extremely clean and staff are very friendly and professional. Looking forward to spending more time here.
Dropped into an open mat and later a class while visiting from out of town. Super welcoming group and squeaky clean gym. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town!
Beautiful, clean gym with extremely friendly members and coach. My co-workers and I were visiting Richmond and dropped in to 6am open mat. We definitely plan to stop in whenever we are in town and can't recommend Aegis or the morning program enough!
Great, clean, and friendly gym. Came for open mat at 6am with a couple of buddies and Ben opened up for us bright and early. Highly recommend.
Absolutely love this place. It's a clean gym and the people are welcoming. Dave and Brian are the best instructors you're going to find in terms of overall JJ knowledge, personality and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly. I have 3 boys, and we've been in and around JJ going on 10 years. In terms of competition preparedness there's no better place IMO in the Richmond area and probably for quite some distance beyond. The instructors go the extra mile while monitoring the rolling and address each group to make sure everyone is getting it right. They will frequently stop and work on things they see that may not even be the focus of that days class. They're genuinely invested in the people there. They have a passion for what they're doing and it is clearly reflected in both their teaching and the atmosphere they've carefully cultivated. I can't say enough good things about this place.
I have to say our son is now 6 and when he started last year he was so scared and would be flustered but once coach Dave and the other coaches worked with him, his confidence has increased and does not seem to be afraid. We think this was a great choice for our son, highly recommend.
Started my kids here 2 years ago and it quickly became a second family! I absolutely love this place! I have met my best friends here and my boys have met theirs! They love competing and the growth they have made in these 2 years is crazy. If your looking for a fun family and clean environment i recommend giving Aegis a look!
year review: My kids and I have been at Aegis for a year now and it has become our second home. The Coaching is the best I have ever experienced from the Kids classes to the adult Gi and Nogi classes. The amount of knowledge from Dave and Brian is incredible. Come check it out for yourself, your Jiu Jitsu game will thank you. If you are serious about jiu jitsu this is the place for you. Regardless if you are new or have been training for years this is an amazing school/gym. The amount of talent from the coaches and students is impressive to say the least.
Coach Dave and the rest of the professors at Aegis have built an amazing studio with a great culture, and team. The place is spotless first of all, which is immediately noticeable. Everybody is always very respectful and welcoming, and the classes are fun and challenging. Im looking forward to many years with these folks
I love this place! At first, I was a little hesitant and intimidated to try Jiu Jitsu, but everyone at Aegis made me feel welcomed and encouraged. Definitely recommend!
I visited a few places around Richmond before making this our home. My wife, 4 kids ( daughter and three sons), and I all have trained with and under Coach Dave. He and his team are incredible and after a year here, we still look forward to the opportunity to train here multiple times a week.
Dave runs a great place here. Very kind and respectful, but also knowledgeable with good instruction techniques.
I don’t know JiuJitsu so I can’t intelligently speak to Dave’s technical skills. (I do know his students do well at tournaments.) He teaches my girls! But, I can speak to character!! I do know people. Dave Kenworthy makes you walk a little taller when you are around him! He should run for office! A great role model for kids and adults! From a character perspective, he is EVERYTHING you want in an instructor!!!
Coach Dave is amazing! He is VERY patient with teaching my kids, and they all like to learn from him! The adult classes are also fantastic, and they even offer women's self-defense during the Saturday kid's class. If you have any interest in learning Jujitsu and not feeling intimidated as a newbie, this is the place! Everyone is welcoming, friendly, and happy to help each other learn and train.
Joe was extremely welcoming and nice. I came for the winter break over college, and learned a lot over that time. I also encouraged 2-3 friends too join for the break, and likely will join when we come back from school. The location is great, and is kept clean. Thanks for your help, and I hope to be back in the summer and beyond!
Great gym for beginners and experienced grapplers alike. Friendly staff and members.
I was a little nervous to check a Jiu Jitsu location out due to my phobia to germs but my sister had started and loved it so I went in and checked it out. Not only is the facility extremely immaculate, but the environment is phenomenal. The people are kind, welcoming and thoughtful. One of the owners, Dave, is an absolute hoot and will bend over backwards to make sure you feel like you are part of the family. I love the way instruction is done because it gives the newbies a chance to wrap their heads around techniques. And the other individuals (especially ones that have been at it for a long while, including Dave) are respectful to your lack of knowledge and walk you through each step of the technique (just ask). It’s a great place to learn, gain confidence, get stronger and more agile. I highly recommend Aegis Jiu Jitsu!
Stopped in for an open mat and was greeted with friendly faces and great training partners. The establishment is very clean. Would recommend!
All instructors are super professional, very technical, calm, patient and are always paying attention to the students on the mat. Safety is another focus, besides teaching. The mat is extremely clean, sanitized after every session and incredibly wide! You don’t get to see that in most of the BJJ gyms out there. My 7 year old kid also has been having a blast at kids’s classes and learning a lot about technique in self defense but also in discipline They are open every day of the week, including the weekends, which is awesome!
I spent four months training as a blue belt with Dave while I was in town temporarily. Dave and his entire school were so friendly and welcoming. Dave has a ton of experience and is a fantastic teacher. I was exposed to so many systems my school never touches, it was a great opportunity to expand my knowledge base. The school has both hobbyists and competitors and trains hard every day. My conditioning improved dramatically just from the pace and amount of rolling time we had. There are multiple classes a day, so I could almost always fit a class in when I wanted to. All of the senior belts were approachable and had great insights as well. If I lived in RVA I would absolutely have stuck with Aegis, and I plan on swinging by whenever I visit in the future. Whether you're a brand new person that is curious to try BJJ out, or an experienced practitioner, I'm sure you'll have a great time here.
I was in the Richmond area for work and was trying to find a place train while gone. There’s a reason why Aegis has all 5 star reviews. I’m sure glad I found Aegis. The place has an incredible vibe with great people who are all willingly to help and teach. Dave the main professor is very knowledgeable and extremely friendly and welcoming as well. If you live in the Richmond area and are looking for a place to train I’d look no further. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town.
I dropped in from out of town a few days ago. I live in Los Angeles and train out there but I was pleasantly surprised at how amazing the environment is at Aegis. It smells awesome. It looks and feels very clean. It almost looks like a spa. The very best part is the people. They are so incredibly friendly and knowledgeable with overwhelming positive energy. I highly recommend signing up cause this place is world class and if I lived in Richmond VA I would sign up in a heart beat. Professor Dave told me that pretty much everyone comes out to each other's tournaments even when not competing. That's an incredible amount of support. I probably learned more in one day training here than any other day doing BJJ elsewhere due to the relaxed yet attention focused style of both professors. Professor Dave, Professor Brian and assistant Instructor Chase are VERY good instructors. They have Gi and No Gi stuff available on the one day I was there! Most schools designate days to each but not here! AMAZING!
Coach Dave makes class their fantastic. The kids love him and they learn a lot. Even the 30-40 kids that attend the classes are friendly. Just wish they had 5 kids classes a week instead of 3…I’d pay more for more classes if it were an option
I was looking into a couple of facilities for my kids to get into Jiu Jitsu. Aegis happened to be the first one I checked out. I brought my kids in (8, 11, 16) one day to watch/train with the classes (kids class for my 8 & 11year old, adult class for my 16 year old). Needless to say we didn't look any further, Aegis had everything we were looking for! I signed them up that day and never needed to check another place out. My kids and I loved it from the moment we walked in. Coach Dave is amazing! He's an excellent teacher, very thorough, informative, and patient. The facility is very clean and well maintained. Everyone is friendly and inviting. SO glad we found Aegis Jiu Jitsu!
Aegis has an outstanding environment for personal growth and team development. From beginners skills to self defense and competition training, you will be hard pressed to find a better martial arts community to be a part of!
Up front, the people and coaches are awesome; the facilities are well kept and clean, much more so than many of the gyms I've visited. Went there three days in a row, and the instruction from both coaches were great...go here!
Great place to learn! The instructor of the gi sessions, Dave, is very personable, knowledgeable, and happy to answer any and all questions. Everyone was very welcoming when I started, and the group can be fairly close knit with going to tournaments together and occasional group dinner outings. Highly recommend for any belt level
Out of town drop in. Beautiful gym. Coach Dave is a great instructor. Very good vibe and learning environment. Students are calm and under control. Very clean (mats, dressing room, and bathroom). If I lived here, I’d train here for sure.
Been here for about two months. So far it’s been a huge step in my own self improvement. Being a fitness guru I’m always looking into ways to be better. I feel I’ve found the next journey for myself. Being at aegis has been mentally challenging, physically demanding, and always humbling. The staff is top notch. Very personal, kind, and attentive to the small details.
Great place, very clean, friendly people and Dave is a master martial artist. Definitely recommend.
Excited to have found a place as incredible as AEGIS JJ to call my second home. I’be found a second family here on the mats at AEGIS, and I recommend anyone thinking of trying BJJ to come in and give Aegis a shot, you will not be disappointed!
I love this school. The environment is clean and modern as well as aesthetically pleasing. Lots of mat space. The instructors are great and so are the other students I’ve met. People are friendly and interested in learning Jiu Jitsu with others. Currently there are a lot of new people so it’s a great time to get started if you’re looking to get into BJJ.
Aegis is a new clean school with experienced and dedicated instructors. Spacious changing rooms accompany the regularly maintained bathroom. Students are friendly and welcoming to visitors and beginners. The professors take time to thoughtfully think out the lesson plan and build your skillset in a logical manner. I would recommend this school to anyone.
I was visiting from out of town and stopped in for two sessions. Great instruction, training partners, communication. The facility is super clean. I'll be back when in town again.
AJJ is a fantastic place to train. The coaches are top-notch, and the culture they create makes the atmosphere ideal for combining BJJ skills, physical fitness, toughness, and community. Students are expected to help and mentor each other, which has the effect of making everyone better very quickly. While students are encouraged to develop their own plans and goals with respect to training, the instructors take a deliberate approach to progressing and combining various skills over consecutive classes and training cycles. On top of that, they care enough about each member to take notice and provide specific feedback, assistance, and encouragement.
I have had the opportunity to drop-in to a lot of different academies around the country. This week I stopped into Aegis Jiu Jitsu. The students were warm and welcoming. Brian, the instructor for the evening, showed us some cool back control techniques and treated me as if I had trained there for years. The school is beautiful — it is clean, bright, and welcoming!
Coming from out of town, I feel at home and well-instructed by Professor Dave! Great facility for training and learning something new everyday.
It took a long time for BJJ to come to the far west end, but the wait was worth it. First of all, the gym is spectacular in design and function. Huge mat space, clean locker rooms and just beautiful aesthetics. This matters! But most importantly, the instruction is sensational. Dave, Bobby and Brian are all patient and highly skilled martial artists who've created a welcoming vibe and excellence in every way. All of the upper level belt athletes here are good guys who don't hesitate to help beginners. My son and I love this place and hope that it's our BJJ home for a very long time.
What can I say?? This place is awesome! Came in for a visit on Monday and was immediately welcomed like I had been training there for years. Dave is the head instructor and is one of the most hands on coaches I’ve ever met. He doesn’t care who you are or what skill level you are his only goal is to ensure that you leave class having learned something new. When teaching class he knows how to break down every technique REALLY well so that anybody from black to white belt can fully understand it. He walks around class and makes sure that everybody has the technique down before moving on and best of all he keeps the mats CLEAN! If I had to recommend a Jiu Jitsu academy to a friend Dave and Aegis Jiu Jitsu would be the first place I’d recommend. If you’re visiting the area or looking for a place to train it’s definitely the place for you.
Dave is a great instructor, he cares deeply about his students' health, well-being, and progress. The school environment is warm and welcoming and they focus a lot on drilling. You are doing yourself a great disservice if you don't train at AEGIS.
I was able to drop in to a no- gi class while visiting the area. Quick response to my inquiry and this is a really nice academy. Lots of mat space, spacious changing area and super clean. Brian was a great instructor. He treated me as if I was part of the family and not just dropping in. The students were very welcoming and had some good rolls. Thanks! I have an office in the area and now I feel like I have a home away from home.
Super friendly. I was visiting from CA and staying for only a couple days. Emailed them ahead of time and they were extremely responsive and welcoming. I was able to attend an Adult Gi class with Dave and an Adult No-Gi class with Brian. I learned a lot in those 2 days and had some good, tough rolls. Thank you Dave, Brian, and Christine.
Great gym. Their schedule is really flexible with morning, lunch, and evening classes so that you can pick a time to train that works for you. Instructors care about their students and provide great constructive feed back to help you grow your ground game.
Great gym with great coaches. There is the option to train every day and everyone there helps eachother to get better!
Dave is a very detailed instructor who cares about his students and makes class fun.
🌟Great ENERGY!!!🌟 Motivating and Insightful instructor.
Great facility Great Instructors happy environment wonderful place to train
Great instruction, but I cut 1 star because they have so much vanity that they use febreze air fresheners. Who know what toxic ingredients are used in these febreze plugs that we are all forced to inhale? The ingredients are proprietary. Fortunately, members are not required to wear flatulence filtering underwear.
This is a good place for older kids. However, I wish the number of kids were less at this place as I felt there were too many kids in a single session. Very young kids struggle in the middle of older kids. I feel there should be separate groups of kids and younger kids were not mixed with older kids who outperform and make younger ones bad or a little low. The trainers do a decent job and try to focus on everyone but there were too many kids together for them to handle. I feel the contract of 3 months and 1 year should be flexible. Even though the trainers did a great job, I felt my kids were too young (4 and 6 years) and I was not made aware that the kids were too young for it.
