Essex has one of the busier BJJ competition calendars in the south east, built mainly around the Essex Jiu Jitsu Open (EJO). Some events take place in Chelmsford and Colchester.
The EJO runs seasonal Autumn, Winter and Spring Opens, the Colchester Open and the EJO Southern Masters for older competitors. With several editions a year, there is usually an EJO event within a few months.
Gi divisions are slightly more common than No-Gi, and around four in ten events include an absolute. About a quarter of events run kids divisions. IBJJF rules are the standard ruleset. Adult entry typically costs around £22–£45. November is the busiest month, followed by February, May, October and June.
