 EVENT STRUCTURE

Please note that the 2026 Melbourne Cup and Oceania trial event are 2 separate competitions. If you intend to compete in both you will need to register for both events. All Oceania Trial matches will take place on Sunday the 1st of November.

 AGE CATEGORIES 

Wrestlers (or an adult on their behalf where the wrestler is < 18 yrs old) must register online.

A Wrestling Australia member ID must be added at the point of registration.

The following age divisions will be conducted at the competition:

- Male and Female U9 (6-9 years)

- Male and Female U12 (10-12 years)

- Male and Female U15 (13-15 years)

- Male and Female U17 (16-17 years, from 15 with parental and medical certificate)

- Male and Female U20 (18 and 19, from 17 with parental and medical certificate)

- Male and Female U23 (20, 21, 22 and 23, from)

- Male and Female Senior Freestyle (20 years and older)

GRECO-ROMAN AGE RESTRICTIONS/SUPLEX POLICY            

Greco-Roman Wrestling is only permitted for those male wrestlers over the age of 18 at the time of the competition.  Wrestlers under the age of 18 are not permitted to compete in the Greco-Roman divisions.

SUPLEX POLICY

Suplexes are only permitted in age categories from U20 and above. No categories from U17 and below will be allowed to perform suplexes.

AGE SUBMISSION 

Age submissions are to be based on the Year of Birth (i.e., turning the denoted age in this calendar year), and not the age at the time of the competition.

WEIGHT CATEGORIES 

-Melbourne Cup

 No weight allowance from U15's and older. 0.5kg allowance for U12 and under.

-Oceania Trial

No weight allowance

Please ensure that you enter the correct weight categories when you register for the competition.  No shifting of category or late entry will be considered on the day of the competition. If a wrestler does not make weight he/she will forfeit their matches and lose the chance to compete.

• No weight changes are permitted after the registration deadline.

🚨 Eligibility & Membership (Mandatory)

A valid 2026 membership with Victoria Wrestling (or your home state's Wrestling Australia affiliated association) is MANDATORY for all competitors. This is a strict legal and insurance requirement.

There are no exceptions to this rule. Your membership status will be checked, and you will not be permitted to compete without a valid membership.

  • All Athletes: Must have a valid wrestling membership. Both State and National Level Memberships are accepted. 
  • International Athletes: You are welcome to compete, but you must purchase a 2026 membership from VIC Wrestling to be eligible.

  All competitors must have either a Senior or Junior State or National Level membership class.

TOP TEAMS CRITERIA

The following rules are applied when calculating the Top Team rankings:

  • Team points are awarded only in divisions with a minimum of 3. No team points are awarded in divisions with only one or two participants.
  • Best Seniors Team (Freestyle and Greco-Roman) is calculated based on results from the +18 age groups.
  • Best Juniors Team is calculated using results from all U18 and youth divisions.

IDENTIFICATION 

All participants are required to bring proof of age to the event to be presented at weigh in.

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS 

All wrestlers are required to wear the following;

  1. 1 standard red and blue wrestling singlet each - Other than female religious coverings no other clothing attire will be accepted. This includes but is not limited to; rash guards, shorts, vest singlets, compression wear. Wrestlers may only wear 1 singlet at a time while competing, do not overlay 1 on top of the other as you will be asked to remove the incorrect one prior to starting a match.
  2. Wrestling shoes

The following items are optional;

  1. Knee and elbow pads. Soft gel and fabric only, any protective wear with hard plastic or metal inserts will not be permitted.
  2. Standard wrestling headgear. Soft gel and fabric only, any protective wear with hard plastic or metal inserts will not be permitted.

SPECTATOR ENTRY FEES

Spectator entry fees can also be paid in cash at the door.

16+ Adult single entry ($10)

Child under 16 single entry ($5)

Family Pass - 2 adults and 2 children under 16 ($25)

*Competing athletes and those with a coach's pass will be issued a complimentary entry ticket.

SPORTS AUSTRALIA EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS - SENIOR ATHLETES

All Australian athletes that are competing in the U20, U23 and Senior Age Category must complete the following Sports Integrity Australia On-Line Courses:

  • Anti-Doping Fundamentals Course 
  • Annual Update 2026

A copy of e-learning certificate is to be emailed to vic@wrestling.com.au prior to competition day or shown at weigh-in on competition day.

COMPETITION RULES and Conditions of Entry:

  1. All wrestlers are only eligible to compete if they are a member of a Constituent Association, irrespective of whether their relevant Wrestling Club is a member of a Constituent Association of Wrestling Australia Ltd
  2. All competitors are required to be a financial member of their State Association AND Wrestling Australia Ltd.
  3. All competitors are responsible for their own medical and physical fitness to wrestle and understand that the nature of the sport of wrestling involves some physical risks that can result in serious injury. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure they are free of skin lesions or allergies and are fit to compete.
  4. All competitors are encouraged to have their own private health insurance in case of an injury.
  5. Competition will be conducted in accordance with UWW Rules; draw will use a modified pairing system.
  6. All competitors must make weight within these categories.
  7. No weight changes are permitted after the registration deadline.
  8. All competitors must wear a wrestling singlet or the alternative uniform option for weigh in.
  9. Proof of Age, satisfactory to Wrestling Australia Ltd., is required for all competitors. (Copy of Original Birth Certificate or Passport is required with entry form).
  10. Special consideration will be given for entries wishing to compete in a higher age categories.

The organisers will have the sole discretionary decision.

  6. Wrestling Australia needs to promote itself to the community at large, just like any other organization. I thereby authorise Wrestling Australia, and any person authorised by them, to reproduce, publish, broadcast or do any of the acts comprised in the copyright subsisting in: Photographic picture, Videotapes (with or without sound), Production stills and Voice recording.

Are the Melbourne Cup and Oceania Trial separate competitions?
Yes. The 2026 Melbourne Cup and Oceania trial event are two separate competitions, and athletes who intend to compete in both must register for both events.

What happens if an athlete misses weigh-in or does not make weight?
No exceptions will be made for athletes who miss the 8.30am-9.30am weigh-in window. If a wrestler does not make weight, he or she will forfeit their matches and lose the chance to compete.
Are weight changes allowed after registration closes?
No. No weight changes are permitted after the registration deadline, and no shifting of category or late entry will be considered on the day of competition.
What membership is required to compete?
