COMPETITION RULES

Guardians On The Mat uses a simplified Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ruleset based on commonly recognized competition standards. Our priority is fair competition, sportsmanship, and athlete safety.

SCORING

  • Takedown: 2 points
  • Sweep: 2 points
  • Knee-on-Belly: 2 points
  • Guard Pass: 3 points
  • Mount: 4 points
  • Back Control with hooks/body triangle: 4 points

Competitors must establish clear control before points are awarded.

WAYS TO WIN

A match may be won by:

  • Submission
  • Points
  • Referee Decision
  • Disqualification
  • Injury or Withdrawal

If a match ends tied, the referee will determine the winner based on submission attempts, aggression, positional control, and attempts to advance position.

MATCH TIMES

  • Kids: 3 minutes
  • Teens: 4 minutes
  • Adults: 5 minutes
  • Masters: 5 minutes

SUBMISSIONS & SAFETY

Submissions must be applied with control. Referees have the authority to stop a match at any time when they believe a competitor is in danger.

Youth divisions will use age-appropriate submission rules with athlete safety taking priority.

The following are prohibited:

  • Slamming
  • Heel hooks in youth or beginner divisions
  • Knee reaping in youth or beginner divisions
  • Neck or spinal cranks
  • Striking
  • Biting
  • Eye gouging
  • Hair pulling
  • Small-joint/finger manipulation
  • Intentional groin attacks
  • Scissor takedowns
  • Any technique applied recklessly or with intent to injure

OUT OF BOUNDS

If competitors leave the competition area, the referee may stop the match and restart competitors in the center.

Intentionally leaving the mat to avoid a submission or scoring action may result in a penalty or disqualification.

STALLING

Competitors are expected to actively pursue takedowns, sweeps, passes, positional advancement, and submissions.

Repeated stalling or intentionally avoiding engagement may result in warnings, penalties, or disqualification.

COACH & COMPETITOR CONDUCT

Good sportsmanship is required at all times.

Abusive behavior toward competitors, coaches, referees, volunteers, or event staff will not be tolerated.

Coaches may verbally instruct their athlete but may not enter the competition area or interfere with officials.
