Bracket Format & Registration
The Amsterdam Grappling Invitational (AGI) uses a 16-athlete double-elimination bracket for every division.
Unlike traditional tournaments with unlimited registrations, each category is limited to a maximum of 16 confirmed competitors. Once all 16 confirmed spots are filled, registration for that division will automatically close.
IMPORTANT: CONFIRM YOUR REGISTRATION!
Submitting your registration does not guarantee your place in the bracket.
On Smoothcomp, athletes who have registered but have not yet completed payment will appear as "unconfirmed" competitors. Unconfirmed registrations do not count toward the 16-athlete limit and do not reserve a spot.
Your place in the division is only guaranteed once your registration has been fully paid and confirmed.
If a division appears to have 16 names but some athletes are still marked as Unconfirmed, those positions remain available until payment is completed.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly recommend completing your payment immediately after registering. Divisions are expected to fill quickly, and confirmed athletes will always have priority.

Judging Criteria (If No Submission Occurs)
If no athlete achieves a submission within the time limit, the referee and judges will decide the winner based on genuine and legitimate pursuit of submissions.
What Counts
- Real submission attempts that create credible finishing threats.
- Constant offensive grappling.
- Active progression toward a submission.
- Initiating meaningful attacks.
What Does Not Count
- Stalling.
- Holding position without attacking.
- Passive control with no submission intent.
Passivity Rule
If an athlete remains passive in a dominant position without actively attacking, the referee may stand both competitors up and restart the action.
Equal Aggression
The referee will favor the athlete who is clearly attacking more.
If both competitors are equally active and aggressive, an additional 2-minute overtime period will be added.
AGI rewards the athlete who genuinely hunts the finish!
Legal & Illegal Techniques
Amsterdam Grappling Invitational (AGI) operates under its own submission-only ruleset, designed to promote active, offensive grappling while maintaining athlete safety.
Although many of the legal and illegal techniques are based on widely recognized Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition standards, AGI reserves the right to modify or expand these rules. The regulations outlined below take precedence over any other organization's rulebook.
All competitors are responsible for understanding the AGI rules before stepping onto the mats. Ignorance of the rules will not be accepted as grounds for appeal or protest.

Knee Reaping β White & Blue Belts
What is knee reaping? Knee reaping occurs when a competitor intentionally places their leg across or behind their opponentβs thigh while controlling the opponentβs leg, creating a position where the opponentβs knee is exposed to rotational pressure.
Intentional Knee Reap: An intentional knee reap is when a competitor deliberately enters a reaped-leg position and continues to pursue a submission from that position. This will result in disqualification (DQ).
Unintentional Knee Reap: An unintentional knee reap may occur naturally during a scramble or transition, without the competitor intentionally creating the position or pursuing an attack from the reaped leg. In this situation, the competitor must immediately disengage from the reaped position and cannot continue attacking from it.
Important: Youth, White and Blue Belts may not intentionally knee reap and then attack a straight ankle lock or any other legal leg lock from a reaped-knee position. The legality of the submission does not make the reaped position legal.
AGI Standard: Control the position. Respect the rules. Hunt the finish.
