After 30 years studying and training in Okinawan Karate, I always felt there was something missing in my self-defense skills in the way of grappling, joint locks, and ground fighting skills. I spent two weeks traveling around the Phoenix area watching several different BJJ instructors teach classes. First and foremost I wanted to find a place that seemed welcoming to an older beginner student. Once I watched a noon class Professor Mike was teaching, I knew this was the place I wanted to start my new journey. So at the age of 61, I signed up and dove in. Best thing I have done for myself in several years. Mike, his assistant instructors, and all of the other students have been nothing but professional, respectful and welcoming to me and other new students in the gym. I’ve been at it just over a month and know it will be a lifelong commitment for me.

I came in with absolutely no expectations on what to expect and a little nervousness about starting something new. Walking in, I was greeted by Mike, the owner. Such a genuinely kind and friendly dude. He walked me through courses, pricing, schedules- the whole nine yards very comprehensively. I signed up on the spot and waited for the first class to start. There’s an air of sportsmanship and camaraderie the minute you step onto the mat and realize all ego is left at the door; the main goal of everyone seems to be honing each other’s skill. Everyone I met my first day was extremely nice and welcoming and very much alleviates any feeling of anxiety about starting a new journey. If you are looking to start taking Jiu Jitsu or are already far along the path and need a place to continue sharpening your skills, I cannot recommend this gym enough

I’m new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I couldn’t be happier to have found this place! From the moment I walked in, Mike and the other instructors made me feel right at home. The environment is welcoming and supportive, and there are classes for all skill levels, which is perfect for beginners like me. I especially enjoy the basic technique classes on Tuesday and Thursday—they’re well-structured and make learning the fundamentals both fun and accessible. The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in helping everyone improve. If you’re considering starting BJJ or looking for a new gym, I highly recommend checking this place out!

The community here is friendly, and the vibes are incredible. The class structure is well-balanced with a mix of warm-ups, drills, technique work, and live rolling, which really helps in applying what you learn in a practical setting. Each session pushes you to grow—not only in skill but also in mental resilience. Todd is incredibly patient and teaches the fundamentals really well, making it easy to build a strong foundation from the start. He takes time to ensure everyone understands, which really boosts confidence on the mat. They even have a sticker on the front door that says 'Happy Place,' and it truly feels like one!

Really is a great place to train for men and women and kids of all ages. I trained for years, took some time off, and then came back to train again. And I didn't think people could be even more nice than they used to be, but they are. Such an amazing group of people that coach Mike has there. Good people attract more good people I guess. Great coaches. Great training. Great people.

We were looking for a new academy for our 10 yr old daughter after ours closed down. We took classes at three different places to see which was the best fit for her. We landed at Strong Heart, even though it is not very similar to the original academy she went to. Prof. Mike is a great instructor and explains the moves and transitions clearly before they drill. They do go live which is something different than our first academy. Took her a couple classes to understand defeat and be ok with tapping, but we believe the foundation she built in her original academy will compliment the style here. Great group of kids in the class as well. They are very helpful if she needs more instruction.

Sometimes life drops surprises on us in the most unexpected yet much needed ways. With nearly every child so addicted to screen time, it’s hard to get them to commit to some type of extra curricular sport especially one as physically demanding as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We signed up our 14 year old son for the (free MMA) first class and he enjoyed it but was not sure he wanted to do it. Professor Mike and the team were great, very welcoming, and inspiring from the beginning. We convinced our son to try the Jiu-Jitsu, first one free also, and he really liked it. We finally found something he enjoys that will help him grow and develop into a truly great man. Thank you Professor Mike Martin & the Strong Heart Academy team (Family) for everything so far and for the future to come!

BJJ has been a part of my life for a decade and a half. After a long hiatus due to moving here from a different state, I was pretty sure I was done training. However, I wanted to find a great place for my 6 y/o son to learn. After having looked in the area, none of them topped what we experienced at Strong Heart. It is very friendly and organized atmosphere that is committed to BJJ excellence and character development. My son absolutely loves it here and it brings me great joy to see that he has fallen in love with the same martial art that I did several years ago. Mike Martin, head instructor and business owner, is deeply dedicated to his craft. He has an appreciation for the essentials while also remaining attentive to new developments in BJJ technique. This is a crucial and necessary quality to ensure students are equipped in an ever-evolving sport like BJJ. Despite thinking that I was done training, my family and Mike successfully encouraged me to return to the mats. In addition to great kids classes, the adult classes are equally superb. You will find quality organized instruction, friendly and skilled training partners, and a great workout. Thank you Prof. Mike and Strong Heart Academy for bringing me back to the mats and providing a great place for my family to train.

Overall, I'd recommend Strong Hearts to anyone interested in jiu-jitsu.

From the moment I walked through their doors, I was greeted with warmth and enthusiasm. The instructors at Strong Heart Academy are truly amazing, and their passion for the martial art shines through in every session. Mike, the owner of Strong Heart Academy, sets the tone for a welcoming and inclusive environment. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced practitioner, Mike ensures that everyone feels valued and supported on their Jiu-Jitsu journey. The instructors at Strong Heart Academy are not only skilled practitioners but also exceptional teachers. They possess a deep understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques and concepts, and they convey this knowledge with patience and clarity. The classes are well-structured, catering to students of all levels, allowing beginners to grasp the fundamentals while challenging more experienced practitioners to refine their skills. What sets Strong Heart Academy apart is the sense of community they foster. Training there feels like being part of a close-knit family, where everyone encourages and supports one another. Whether you are a seasoned Jiu-Jitsu practitioner or someone looking to embark on a new martial arts journey, I highly recommend Strong Heart Academy. I was on a vacation trip to Scottsdale and dropped into a few academies in the area to train Jiu Jitsu with folks in the area. I'm a Black belt with thirteen years on the mats, so I've been to many different locations and have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly out there. That said, Strong Heart falls into the good category. The set up is one that many practitioners are familiar with: a decent-sized, well-padded mat area where eight pairs can roll comfortably without worrying about being kicked in the head by nearby sparring neighbors and cushiony enough such that you aren't worried about working some Judo during your sparring sessions. There are small locker cubicles available, two bathrooms, and a small weight room on the grappling side of the facility. There are two rows of folding chairs for observers to watch the mat, so parents can keep an eye on their progeny as they train. The other side contains a bathroom, a desk/booth setup, and a mat for working striking and MMA techniques. The place is roomy enough for sufficient navigation so that you can come in, get to the bathroom and/or the mats without taking off your footwear. Mike (the owner) is a legit Black belt who is looking to raise his students' technical ability and it shows in the students I was exposed to. There was no mat fee and no goofy uniform requirement to do a drop-in class, which is exactly the way it should be. I wish Strong Heart all the success in the world as they continue their journey.

I have only been attending Strong Heart for a few weeks, but I can say that I’m very sad that I didn’t come sooner. Aside from a few aches and pains to be expected when starting a new physical activity (especially in your 40s), everything about the experience has been fantastic. Professor Mike is very gracious and welcoming, and he does a good job explaining the various aspects of why certain techniques work the way they do. The environment is clean, and everyone that I’ve been in class with has taken both hygiene and safety pretty seriously. The rest of the black belts and other advanced students have also been very friendly, without any of the macho egos that one might expect to run into in the BJJ community. I expect to keep attending long into the future, or at least as long as my solidly middle aged body will let me.

Months ago we had to make the very difficult decision of finding a new home gym because of the location and our busy changing schedules. It took several weeks and visits to several gyms before our visit to Strong Heart. Once we made it to a Strong Heart class, our kids immediately felt comfortable and were excited with what was taught. Our kids asked for Strong Heart to be our new home, as parents we immediately noticed the clean gym, professional coaches and content be taught. We are a large family with 9 practitioners ranging from beginner to advanced levels, from very young to adult, this gym accommodates all of our needs. Phenomenal content, great family environment with competition/advanced classes for those who like to compete. Lots of class options throughout the day and week, we enjoy all the options from female only classes to competition classes. Extremely happy family.

We just started here last month and my daughter (aged 9) LOVES it! The instructors are very knowledgeable and great with the kids. Also, the students all have friendly and great attitudes, as do the parents who stay to watch. Overall, this place has a super cool, positive energy.

My 10 year old son came to try out a few classes as our previous gym closed due to covid. He has been training for 2 years and we found wonderful instructors and Professor Mike was incredible. Level of instruction was top notch, students were disciplined. Nice mix of beginners and more advanced. We are still searching for a new home but so far this feels like a winner.

Strong Heart Academy is wonderful. We were looking for some where my 6 year old could get exercise, learn discipline and valuable skills to use throughout her life. The Professors and coaches are welcoming and patient. My daughter loves it!

My son has been taking boxing classes with Mike and it has been a great experience. He is not only learning great skills in a fun environment, but also discipline to make him physically and mentally stronger. I would highly recommend Strong Heart Academy to any parent looking for a place to bring their kids for martial arts or boxing.

I was dropping in to check out a kids boxing class for my son Dylan. My son also does Jiu-Jitsu at another academy and he let him stay to do the Jiu Jitsu class as well. Mike was great and so was Riley. We saw Riley a few months later at a Jiu-Jitsu tournament and he came up to me and wished my son good luck in the tournament. Definitely class acts. Thanks for letting us drop in.

Professor Mike Martin and all of the coaches are top notch. The facilities are clean and the gym has a very welcoming environment. If you have always wanted to try a class but were hesitant you absolutely need to come to Strongheart, you won't regret it; in fact, you'll probably wish you had started sooner!

Love training with coach mike. I’m a purple belt that travels for work 3 weeks a month. I have been visiting strong heart for several years now. What a great coach! Killer technique! He has one of the best cross face/ pressure games I have ever felt! He provides a safe /positive learning environment for fun and growth at all levels. From kids to adults. From beginners to experts. Highly recommend!

Last competition of the year. Thank you Professors and Coaches for always pushing the kids to be their best and for training them hard. After one year of doing jiu jitsu with no Martial arts background. i never thought Strong heart can transform these kids who are shy with low self esteem transformed them into hard working, with better self esteem and confidence. The family and friends they have developed and have is by far the best out of all of these. Thank you for loving them. That is the best medal the kids received this year; family and friendship who loves and believes in them from strong heart.

The Strong Heart Academy is place where relationships are formed, people are empowered, and goals are achieved. If you are willing to take the first step in the process of testing yourself both mentally, having the power of your mind, and physically, I would highly recommend joining the Strong Heart Academy. The development of human growth, opportunities for change and self-evaluation in the Jiu Jitsu conundrum at Strong Heart has given me a strong sense of belonging and has made a positive impact. Mike and Riley engage students and put us in positions of strength, not only through their teachings, but their involvement educating on and off the mat. They are leaders and inspirations for everyone. Mike facilitates change by teaching his students specific techniques during practice and in the form of guiding which emphasize learning. Strong Heart has provided a place where everyone supports one another, and one can build on each other. Thank you

I’m extremely happy I made the decision to start Jiu-Jitsu and I don’t think I could’ve found a better place. Professor Mike and Coach Riley have been great instructors and always make sure you fully understand what is going on. They always provided me with plenty of resources to help learn and retain the knowledge they’ve taught over the last few weeks.

This is the first school i’ve attended, and where I was introduced to the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Right off the bat I was welcomed with great people and a good atmosphere. Everyone is very willing to take time to help you practice drills, or give advice on something you might be struggling with. Mike and Riley are amazing instructors, who will give their students the tools to succeed. If you’ve never tried Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and want to, or looking for somewhere to refine your game this is a great place to check out!

I absolutely love Strong Heart! Professor Mike and all the other instructors are very knowledgeable and supportive. Professor Mike teaches a great kickboxing class and knows his stuff. Jiu jitsu has been phenomenal for my entire family. My kids look forward to coming to class daily and love having Mike coach them during tournaments! If you are looking for the best gym in Phoenix this is it!
