I honestly can’t recommend Henshalls BJJ Manchester enough!
The gym is really family-friendly. There are lots of men and women who train and they often bring their kids along too. My kids had been training BJJ for about 2 years at another club, and in just one session with Ste they learned more than they had in those two years. That alone blew me away.
I’ve got three kids training here, two of them autistic. My daughter is very particular about change and usually won’t go anywhere new. The first time she came, she sat out and just watched because she wasn’t comfortable joining in. Now she’s training both BJJ and Muay Thai 2–3 times a week with her siblings and all the other kids and she absolutely loves it. That alone says a lot about the environment here.
The kids’ classes are unreal (BJJ - Mon-Thurs 5pm, Sat 10am, Sun Comp Class at 1:30pm and Muay Thai - Mon/Weds/Thurs/Fri 6pm, Sat 9am & Sun 10am). They do an hour of BJJ, then head downstairs for an hour of Muay Thai and that’s six days a week. The adults can do the same, BJJ followed by Muay Thai. When you look at the price, the fact you can train every day, the quality of the facilities, and the levels of the coaching, there isn’t a gym in the UK that can top Henshalls BJJ.
The gym itself is spotless, the atmosphere is really welcoming, and everyone’s really friendly. I signed up on the family membership myself.
I hadn’t trained for 5–6 years and getting back on the mats here has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There are no cliques, no egos, just people who genuinely want to help each other get better. The standard of training is seriously high as well, with lots of the guys competing regularly, which shows just how good the coaching is across the board. It’s actually scary watching how good the kids are too! They also have a Kids comp class and lets just say I’m honestly glad the classes are split into kids and adults!!
Adults can pretty much train every single day, multiple times a day if you want (BJJ - Mon -Thurs at 10am & 6pm & Fri/Sat/Sun - 10am and Muay Thai - Mon/Weds/Thurs at 7pm, Fri at 6pm & Sat at 10am).
The only downside is I live about 30 minutes away, so it’s a bit of a trek, otherwise I would be here even more. I’ve got BJJ gyms 5–10 minutes from my house, but honestly, none of them come close to this place.
I’m only a white belt, but if you’re thinking of starting BJJ, don’t even think twice, this is the gym you want to join. They clearly have a no dickhead policy too, because everyone I’ve trained and spoken with has been a top person!!
