My son has started taking classes and is a green belt now. After training for 8 years at another TaeKwonDo School, I have been thoroughly impressed with the instruction and dedication that Mr. Baker and his instructors have for the students here. After I have seen the tenants being taught and used more often by my son, I have returned to taking classes as well from Mr. Baker. The School promotes inclusion and equality in all things. I would recommend this TaeKwonDo School too any parent that wants thier child or children to become better versions of themselves.

As a parent, finding the right extracurricular activity for your child can be a challenge—you want something that teaches discipline, builds confidence, keeps them active, and most importantly, is taught by people you can trust. I can say without hesitation that enrolling our child at Virginia TaeKwonDo and Jiu-Jitsu Academy has exceeded all our expectations and more. From the very first visit, we were impressed by the warm, professional atmosphere. The staff was welcoming and took the time to explain the programs, how classes are structured, and what kind of growth we could expect to see—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. They weren’t just selling a program; they were inviting us into a community. The instructors here are truly outstanding. They’re not only experts in martial arts, but also exceptional teachers and role models. They know how to engage kids, hold their attention, and earn their respect in a way that feels both firm and encouraging. Our child looks forward to every class, talks about the instructors constantly, and is always eager to show us what they've learned. One of the most powerful changes we’ve seen since starting is in our child’s confidence and focus. They've become more respectful at home, more attentive in school, and take real pride in working toward their goals—whether that’s earning a new belt or just showing up and doing their best. The lessons go far beyond kicking and punching. They're learning resilience, self-control, and how to set and achieve goals. The facility itself is fantastic—clean, safe, and well-organized. There's plenty of space for training, and safety is clearly a top priority. We also love that there's plenty of seating for parents to observe, and the environment is just as welcoming for families as it is for students. Although our child is the one enrolled, we’ve come to feel like part of the academy as well. It’s clear that this isn’t just a business—it’s a place where families are supported and kids are mentored. We’ve also met other parents who feel the same way, and that sense of community makes a huge difference. If you’re a parent looking for a program that will help your child grow stronger, more confident, and more respectful—while also having a lot of fun—Virginia TaeKwonDo and Jiu-Jitsu Academy is the place to go. We’re so glad we found them and can’t recommend them highly enough.

As soon as you walk in, you will feel the positive energy and good vibes. Great instructors, great staff, friendly classmates. As the saying goes, “Learn how to fight so you don’t have to be in fights.” The most important belt is your white belt. I can’t say enough good things about Virginia TaeKwonDo Academy in Chesapeake! The facility is spotless and well-maintained, creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. The instructors are incredibly friendly and patient, especially with kids, making it a perfect place for beginners and experienced students alike. Parking is convenient, which makes visiting even easier. Highly recommend this place! Avoid regrets, head over there, sign up, enjoy the journey.

Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy Review My son has been attending Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy for less than a year, and it has been an incredible experience for him. Being smaller than his peers, team sports have always been a challenge, but martial arts has given him a place where he can thrive. He trains twice a week (Monday and Saturday) and has already moved up to a yellow belt. He takes pride in tying his belt himself, and it’s clear he genuinely wants to do well. One of the best parts is how the discipline and respect taught in class are carrying over at home—his little brother has already started mimicking his “yes sirs.” I’m hoping to enroll them both when his brother is old enough. Mr. Baker is fantastic with the kids. He keeps things fun, making them laugh, but also holds them accountable and ensures they’re learning. If you’re looking for a martial arts academy that builds confidence, discipline, and skills in a supportive environment, this is the place to go. Highly recommend!

Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy: A Life-Changing Experience Joining Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been a game-changer for my son and our family. We've been here for over three years now, and I've seen my son blossom into a more disciplined, confident, and respectful young man. It's incredible to watch him grow, not just in martial arts skills but also in character. Mr. Baker, the head instructor, is truly one of a kind. His passion for teaching and his dedication to empowering the kids is evident in every class. He doesn't just teach techniques; he instills values that help shape the students into better citizens. His approach is strict and challenging, yet encouraging, pushing the kids to never give up and always strive for their best. The high standards Mr. Baker sets might seem tough at first, but they are definitely achievable with effort and persistence. This environment has taught my son the importance of perseverance, which is a lesson he'll carry with him for life. One of the unexpected joys of joining the academy has been the sense of community. We've made lifelong friends here, both my son and I. The camaraderie among the students and parents creates such a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. It's like having a second family. Before finding Mr. Baker's academy, we tried out other places, but none of them came close to the experience we’ve had here. The Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy is hands down one of the best things in the Chesapeake community. If you're looking for a place where your child can grow, learn, and make amazing friends, I can't recommend this academy enough.

Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy: A Beacon of Excellence in Martial Arts and Character Building Having been a part of the Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy for over three years, I can wholeheartedly attest to the transformative impact this institution has had on my son's life. From the moment we walked through the doors, it was evident that this academy was more than just a place to learn martial arts; it was a nurturing environment dedicated to the holistic development of its students. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Baker, my son has not only honed his physical skills but has also grown immensely in discipline, confidence, and character. Mr. Baker's passion for martial arts and his unwavering commitment to his students are truly commendable. His teaching goes beyond the technical aspects of TaeKwonDo and Jiu-Jitsu; he empowers the children to become better individuals and responsible citizens. Mr. Baker's methods are both strict and challenging, but they are designed to be achievable over time with persistence and dedication. This approach has instilled in my son a sense of perseverance and a never-give-up attitude, qualities that will serve him well in all aspects of life. The academy’s standards are high, but they are a testament to the excellence Mr. Baker strives for and consistently achieves. The academy offers a variety of programs for both children and adults, making it a great option for families. The tuition is very reasonable, especially considering the quality of instruction and the positive environment. There are also discounts for siblings, making it more accessible for families with multiple children. Additionally, active military members are given the opportunity to train for free for a limited time, a gesture that speaks volumes about the academy's commitment to community and service. One of the most remarkable aspects of our experience at Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been the sense of community. My son and I have forged friendships that I believe will last a lifetime. The camaraderie and support among the students and parents create a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere, making the academy not just a place to train, but a second home. In our search for the right martial arts academy, we tried three different ones before discovering Mr. Baker’s. The difference has been night and day. The Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy stands out as a pillar of excellence in the Chesapeake community. Mr. Baker’s dedication and the positive, structured environment he has created have made a profound impact on our lives. For anyone considering martial arts training for themselves or their children, I cannot recommend Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy highly enough. It is an institution where skills are sharpened, character is built, and lifelong friendships are formed. Mr. Baker’s academy is truly one of the best things about our community, and I am grateful every day for the positive influence it has had on my son and our family.

My son has only been with Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy for 3 months. In the last 3 months he has learned not only Jiu-Jitsu skills but he has become more confident in his every day life. The life-skills, discipline, and respect learned from this academy (through Mr. Baker) can not be learned through a self-help book, Hollywood, or YouTube. This is a family safe environment that nurtures every student to be more than what they are. When he steps out on the mat to start training he isn't looked at like a newbie, chump, or reckless teenager. Instead, he is treated with respect and care and is taught Jiu-Jitsu in a manner that drives him to be a respectable person and not a bully to those that appear weak. Not only is Mr. Baker and his staff amazing but every parent and student that attend and participate are kind and welcoming. You would be foolish to pass up this dojo if you are looking for a safe and friendly environment that learns the disciplines of either TaeKwonDo or Jiu-Jitsu. Dont settle for less...come here.

We have been sending our daughter to this academy for 6 years already. We love this academy. Mr. Baker not only teaches the children Taekwondo and Jiu jitsu, he also teaches them life principles. Mr. Baker and his team are very professional, fair, and brings out the best in each child. Over the 6 years, we made great friends at the academy. Now we feel like the academy is part of our family. The skills our daughter learned has built up her confidence, helps her be more perseverance, and grit. We really appreciate all Mr. Baker has done for the children. Our daughter started white belt, and now she’s a black belt. She started jiu jitsu recently. I believe every child will benefit from learning martial arts. And Mr. baker’s academy is definitely the best in this area! I highly recommend this academy to everyone without reservations.

We recently moved from sunny SoCal to Chesapeake, VA. In San Diego, our daughter was a red white belt in karate. Moving to Chesapeake proved finding a really good karate dojo challenging. After trying a couple and not seeing the discipline and teaching excellence we were used to, our daughter decided to give TaeKwonDo a try. This academy is everything we were looking for, teaching respect and discipline while focusing on technique. Mr. Baker is amazing with the children and the instructors are top notch! Mr. Baker and the entire TaeKwonDo instructor staff are nothing short of exceptional in every facet of this academy. Their ability to connect with the students, even at the earliest ages, is truly impressive. Beyond the valuable physical training they receive, Mr. Baker delivers tailored life skill lesson instruction related to each age grouping. His attention to detail, more than likely fine tuned during his extensive military experience, is evident as soon as the parents and students enter the facility and take note of an immaculately clean space, which is always ready for training. While on deployment last year, my oldest son became disrespectful and disruptive. He hated himself, his life and didn’t want to do anything with anyone. After my wife coaxed him into taking a class he was a different person. He started doing his homework, his grades improved and the teachers were so impressed in his turnaround. I think Master Baker’s program is absolutely wonderful for kids. It teaches the kids “yes sir,” “yes ma’am.” It teaches them respect. Something that is sorely lacking in today’s society. My wife has had a lot of parents come up to her and say what an amazing changes their kids have done. Now we can join in and share those same amazing stories. Parents should invest in their child’s future by enrolling them into this program. Master Baker’s background in the Navy makes this place highly recommended.

Our daughter started taekwondo at Mr. Baker’s academy over 3 years ago. She is now a black belt instructor and is dedicated to this institution and it’s values. Our son also attends the academy and we have realized so many additional rewards from these programs, over and above the tradition instruction. As a parent and your child is getting older, you realize that you can't always be there to help. Mr. Baker instills a value, I feel, that we have lost when I was a child. He encourages my child to use words first, but if that does not work, then (with my permission) my child may use what he has learned in his studio. It is a positive, pro-active way to help my child defend himself against bullies. Luckily, he has not had to use it but if it comes his way he will know what to do.

My daughter has been a dedicated student at Virginia Tae Kwon Do for several years. During this time, we have invested not only our time and money—$110 per month plus testing fees and gear—but also our trust in the leadership of this school. She progressed from white belt to black belt through hard work and discipline. Unfortunately, that same level of discipline and professionalism has not been modeled by the school’s leadership. The head instructor, Mr. Baker, regularly brings his personal political views into the classroom environment. He has shared disturbing anecdotes about immigrants and political talking points that are completely inappropriate for a space where he holds authority over young students. This is especially harmful in a diverse class that includes Black and Brown children, some of whom may be personally affected by the issues he references. I respectfully asked Mr. Baker to keep politics out of the classroom and to be mindful of the impact his words could have on children. He agreed, and he said that he wouldn't bring it up again. However, we soon found out that he was continuing to discuss his views. We tried to address it again. Rather than engaging in a thoughtful dialogue or committing to maintaining a neutral, inclusive environment, he told me our daughter's membership was canceled within minutes of our follow-up conversation. No regard for her years of dedication or accomplishments. Just immediate dismissal. It is deeply disappointing that a student who put in the work to reach black belt status is now forced to find another school—not because of poor behavior or lack of commitment, but because the instructor prioritized pushing his personal agenda over providing a respectful, inclusive environment for all students. I sincerely hope Virginia Tae Kwon Do reconsiders how it handles both parent concerns and the power dynamic that exists between instructors and children. Martial arts should teach integrity, respect, and self-control—not fear, division, or ideology.
