I dropped in while I was in town for a couple of days. The coaches and students were all very welcoming, knowledgeable, and passionate about learning. I particularly enjoyed their no- gi class. Looking forward to training there again!
Posted 1 year agoThis is not my main gym coz it's really far from my house, but I Love it!!!!!! If you are not at Triangle BJJ you are missing out on a wholesome experience. The instructors are kind, well versed and so welcoming, they give great feedback on how you can improve. The people who train there have such a wonderful and welcoming vibe.Am glad I found this place. A big plus is that they work well with other gyms and their members.
Posted 1 year agoI started taking the women's Jiu Jitsu classes here and absolutely love them. The women are so welcoming and friendly.
Posted 1 year agoLegit and very pleasant.
Academia incrível , espaço amplo, excelentes profissionais , aulas de judo, jiujitsu e Crossfit.
I've been to a lot of jiu jitsu gyms around the world, and TJJ easily stands out for the warm, welcoming atmosphere and high quality instruction. Coach Detroit does an incredible job breaking down and articulating fundamental elements of jiu jitsu. Though I only dropped in for a handful of classes (I don't live in the area), some of the concepts I learned here have become a mainstay in my game. Live rolling sessions and open mats are fantastic too, they maintain a very positive and supportive environment to go along with some tough rolls :) I really can't speak highly enough of this gym. Every visit is an absolute delight, if I lived closer I would sign up here as my main gym in a heartbeat.
TJJ has an array of options to meet your daily schedule availability. There's BJJ, Judo, and MMA sessions all throughout the week, ran by amazing instructors. There's definitely an awesome community of men and women to train amongst, of different skill levels, with classes available for kids as well.
I started attending the last February with no experience in jiu-jitsu, nor knowledge of its existence. I am now a 3 stripe white belt in jiu-jitsu and a yellow belt in judo. Classes provide excellent detail, the instructors are patient and great at working in a step-by-step basis, and fellow students are all always very welcoming and supportive. If you are in the triangle, check out Triangle Jiu Jitsu.
Stopped in to train as I was passing through Durham, NC. Very welcoming crew and good, technical training. Facilities were clean, Instructor was professional, and training partners were very friendly. Would definitely recommend this school.
Best gym in the area. Very easy going and welcoming.
Excellent facility! Morning class is great.
Went there for a competition. An amazing facility. Complete with a shop for Gis, fighting apparel and accoutrements, a chiropractor, spa and obviously a place to train. The Gis are not specific to triangle BJJ so come one come all. The designer is on site and the Gis are great quality. I'm tall and thin, she found a Gi that fits perfectly for me. If I'm ever in this neck of the woods, I'd love to go to hop in and take a class or roll at open mat.
Best gym for for wrestle-jitsu and judo in the triangle!
Awesome place. Great facilities. Greater people.
Great place for kids! My son has learned so many new skills!
Awesome place! Family-like atmosphere. Diverse experience: BJJ, judo, wrestling. You choose what you want. If you got kids, the scheduling is perfect - kids classes are every day 5-6 followed by adult classes. Plus early morning classes for early birds. Plus noon adult classes every day. The most wholesome experience in the area.
Excellent instruction, great people, wonderful shop with anything you need, and a class schedule with options for everyone. I cannot recommend this gym enough!
This place changed my life. If you are new to Jiu Jitsu or if you are experienced and you're just looking for a new place to train, it's worth stopping by TJJ. The instructors are kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about Jiu Jitsu. Whether you're just looking to get back in shape, or if you've got a competitive itch and you want to challenge yourself at a BJJ competition, you will find everything you need at Triangle Jiu Jitsu Academy. Come with a positive attitude, and the payoff is off the charts! Thanks TJJ!
Best gym there is, everyone there is super nice and friendly. It’s a super great place for beginners, the instructors will sculpt you into an absolute killer on the mats.
The best environment for jiu jitsu, judo gym in the area. The people are amazing. The best team aspect you could ever ask forn
Triangle Jiu Jitsu has been one of the friendliest facilities I have ever been to. The instructors have been wonderfully patient with both beginners and veterans alike. The atmosphere here has been amazing with instruction, level of intensity, and most of all the people. You get a wide range of hobby jiujitsu practitioners to people who are in it for the grind. Most gyms and especially schools are defined by their cliental, and I know that I am always safe when I drop in for a class. If you are in the area, please give Triangle Jiu Jitsu Academy a try!
I'm not eloquent enough to describe the team and environment at this gym. Easily the best group of people I've ever been affiliated with in any capacity.
I love the Gi Fundamentals and Advanced Gi classes. I’m excited to start training some nogi this month as well. There’s also a wrestling class on Mondays, and Judo classes 2-3 days per week, both of which are awesome supplements to Jiu Jitsu. If you have time during the middle of any weekday, they have a 1-2 hour day class in addition to the regular evening schedule. Basically, you’re going to need to do a lot of laundry to keep up with the sheer volume of available grappling classes that you’re going to want to attend. The coaches are awesome - I have trouble deciding how to work my schedule around training with several of them because they all bring something cool and different to the table-- err, mat. The student population is also very friendly and approachable. Several of the upper belts (and experienced white belts) have been super helpful whenever I’ve had a question. It’s a great community, which is very important to me. If you live anywhere in or around Durham (I drive 30 min despite having closer options) and you’re interested in training BJJ, I recommend this place so hard!
Learn how to split wigs and have fun
I train here, its awesome, chill, and has a huge variety of skills and styles from people cross training. No niche, long term members only groups or weird stuff like that, they're super inviting and inclusive right off the bat. They understand the working man/womens plight and treat everyone the same regardless of how often you can make it. Just overall super friendly, with INCREDIBLE teachers.
Super beginner-friendly place! We have zero martial arts experience, so it was very intimidating to get started (esp as a woman), but the culture at Triangle BJJ is very welcoming and helpful. And of course the classes are exciting! The 6:00 classes are more beginner level, in the 7:00 classes they still are careful to explain for newbies and help you, but it moves faster. They seem to be fine with people attending several times for free before you decide if you want to join or not. You don't have to buy a gi right away, either. They are happy to see you when you visit, but there wasn't any pressure or sales at all.
Awesome Judo and Jiu Jitsu classes!
Great place to train! I’ve been here for about 4 months now and everyone has been more than professional. The instructors are experts who have true passion for the teaching. Plenty of classes to choose from and I look forward to coming to class every day. I’d recommend to everyone regardless of age, experience, or gender.
TJJ offers great technical instruction in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in a positive & welcoming environment. Their kids classes are also a great mix of self defense, discipline, and fun.
TJJ has brilliant Brazilian Jiujitsu intructors with vast knowledge behind the mechanics of this amazing self defense system, between my teammates an the great staff of folks that work there, I've always felt welcomed and right at home.
We were visiting Durham for a few weeks and I wanted to train while away from my home. I attended 4 classes each week and felt my skills growing with each class. Seth's style of teaching is direct and to the point. He doesn't waste time talking too much or going over the skill more than necessary. He introduces a skill, gives some great examples then lets you start practicing. Right about when you realize you're making a mistake he stops everyone and shares some insight that corrects what you were doing wrong. A much better teaching style than cramming too much info up front. Brandon, a brown belt who teaches the morning class was wonderful as well. He brought his knowledge of Judo to the sessions and blended it seamlessly with the Jiu Jitsu skills we were working on. He also has a great teaching style. He began with slow reps of each skill and eventually got to rolling games by the end of class using the skill we'd just practiced. Brandon has a laid back personality and makes class a lot of fun. The rolling after class on Mon and Wed night was great. Several of the higher belts like Detroit and "Juicebox" made real efforts while rolling with me to take the time to point out what I should work on and corrected my mistakes. The entire school has a positive and encouraging feel to it. Overall I was so impressed with Triangle Jiu Jitsu. If I lived here full time, there's no question that this is where I would train.
Seth, Detroit, Brandon and Andrey are all absolutely fantastic instructors and they've made TJJ my favorite place to train both self defense and sport jiu jitsu. Seth convinced me to get into martial arts a little over two years ago and I'm incredibly grateful my first exposure to the sport was such a positive one. The community at the gym is the friendliest, most supportive one I know - everyone trains hard, but everyone's also there to help each other. Would strongly recommend!
As a US. Marine Corps Veteran, Exercise Physiologist and Functional Medicine Health Coach for over two decades, I am always on a relentless quest to find the best practitioners to support and guide me in every genre. From day one as a White Belt stepping into my first Jiu Jitsu class, Royce Gracie Black Belt Seth Shamp and the TJJ Community made me feel welcome and included. Bring your family and friends! My wife and two kids all started at the same time and TJJ is a friendly, no ego, family environment. Seth executes every class I take with him in an extremely accessible teaching style that was simple but precise. His excellent attention to detail in regards to lesson plans serve all of his students at every level. Additionally, he takes the time to address lifestyle modifications, exercise, and ways strengthen the mental state that reinforces the larger practice of the art. Thanks Professor Seth Shamp and Triangle Jiu-Jitsu! Elijah Sacra
Great class format and instruction. Seth and Detroit are knowledgeable and great at communicating techniques. Really enjoy training here.
This is an amazing place to train. Seth Shamp believes in a self defense approach to training that speaks well of the lineage I chose to study. With the addition of a second black belt, Rod "Detroit" Hanson, the quality of instruction continues to grow.
Triangle Jiu Jitsu is the place you want to be if you are interested in the most versatile martial art on the planet. Jiu Jitsu is the martial art that teaches you that you can defend yourself no matter how much bigger, stronger, or more athletic your opponent is if you have the right technique. How do I know this? I learned it at TJJ. Even as a fresh off the street white belt you will feel welcome at TJJ. The two black belt instructors, Seth and Detroit, as well as the brown and purple belt instructors take pride in emparting detailed and accessible knowledge to anyone interested in putting in the time.
After training in five other gyms within the Triangle and elsewhere, I can easily say that TJJ is the best in terms of infrastructure and instruction. The gym itself is big and clean, with access to weightlifting equipment, ample mat space, and other combat sport amenities. The culture of the gym is welcoming and positive, with an emphasis on mutual respect and personal growth. Seth's teaching is methodical, approachable, and designed to accommodate all levels of experience - beginners are especially welcome. He is a wealth of knowledge in combat sport history, which informs his ability to translate complex techniques into simple terms. Overall, Seth's instruction makes learning and application straightforward and fun. You'll get amazing instruction in self defense, MMA, and sport BJJ. If I could give more stars, I would.
I had no idea what I was about to get into. So thankful I found TJJ
Triangle Jiu Jitsu is a great place to get in shape, learn self-defense and or to prepare yourself for the competition scene. Seth provides top-level instruction in a way that can be understood by the novice or the advanced student. If you have an opportunity to train in Durham, make sure you stop by to see just what makes TJJ so special.
Great academy. Great instructor. Update: My last review was unfair. I moved outside of NC 2 years ago and the distance has made me appreciate TJJ even more. This is an awesome place, not only because the classes are high quality, but because of the people. Everyone makes you feel welcome and you feel you are part of the team from day 1. This is not something you get in every bjj academy. One of the highlight of my trips to NC is training with this awesome group of individuals.
Best place to learn the greatest martial art in the world.
Seth and Detroit are amazing instructors and very knowledgeable. This is the number one place to train in the Triangle.
Great atmosphere. Friendly people. Seth is a fantastic instructor.
Seth and Detroit are great instructors and very knowledgeable. Great atmosphere and a great place to learn brazilian jiu jitsu and self defense.
Seth is a great instructor who teaches self defense and BJJ at Duke University and his gym. His gym and the people there are awesome. And they have a new black belt teaching now.
Great instruction, great people, great exercise!
Stopped in for an open mat and was greeted by a very friendly staff member Andre. I was able to roll with some good people and will be by again when I visit the area . The school is very clean and everyone was so welcoming. Highly recommend this school for adults and kids!
About 2.5 years ago, we called Seth at Triangle Jiu Jitsu and set up a time to meet with him and our 4 year old. Seth was patient, understanding, helpful and extremely informative during that meeting. We started out doing private lessons with seth weekly and when he turned 5 he joined the kids class. In these last few years, my child has learned skills that will help him in so many areas of his life. At nearly 7, he has made friends that he never would have, and he has instructors that he trusts and knows will always help him if he is in trouble. TJJ provides a really nice laid back atmosphere, with so many great people. It truly is one of the best things we could have done for our child. Also, check out their birthday party package they offer!! It blends jiu jitsu with some birthday fun :)
My son has been training with Seth at TJJ for five years now. It is a great family friendly atmosphere. As my son made friends I have made friends with the other parents. Seth is patient and he really cares about each and every child. I will recommend this school to anyone who will listen! Not only has my son’s technical knowledge of Gracie JiuJitsu grown so has his confidence. If you have a child who is interested in martial arts please give Triangle Jiu Jitsu a try. You will not regret it.
Dropped-in for an open mat over Thanksgiving break. Staff was great, even waived the mat fee. They had pretty good deals on clothing/training gear too.
Seth is a great instructor. He has a deep understanding of Jiu-Jitsu, self defense and MMA. I've been taking Jiu-Jitsu and mma classes from Seth on and off for the past 8 years as my schedule permits and enrolled my son in the kids class as soon as he was old enough. I feel lucky to have such a high level Jiu-Jitsu practitioner instructing me and my son.
I just started coming to TJJ three weeks ago, and I'm very glad that I did. I received a very warm welcome from Seth (the head instructor) and from the other people who come to classes. The instruction is detailed and clear, and I love that TJJ's fundamentals curriculum is self-defense-oriented. I also love that there are plenty of people who are blue belts and above that attend the fundamentals class. There are also plenty of white belts who come to advanced classes. Overall, I've experienced a welcoming, positive gym vibe that keeps me coming back to continue to learn and grow.
Triangle Jiu Jitsu is a fantastic place to learn. The environment is extremely friendly and welcoming to people of all ages and abilities. If you are overweight and un-athletic like I was, they will welcome you and help you to become your best self. Seth is an amazing teacher. His knowledge of Jiu Jitsu is extensive, but he is also exceptionally capable at breaking down his lessons in ways that make learning intuitive. My only regret in joining TJJ is that I did not start sooner.
The faculty has lots of space, the students were super cool and the teaching is clear, structured and through. Excellent academy
Seth is a thoughtful teacher with incredible energy. No hype and no frills -just legit talent and instruction. When you're this good that's all you need. Our entire family trains at TJJ and we love it! From our first visit we felt at home and comfortable.
Triangle Jiu Jitsu Academy is a great place to learn and make new friends. They have both adult classes and youth classes. The support you and/or your children will receive from the instructors and other students is incredible. Their are no attitudes here...just friendly people helping each other the best that they can. I most definitely recommend TJJ.
I was made to feel like I had been a part of the team for years on day 1! I've never had that experience at any other gym. Seth has built an incredible and healthy community around Triangle Jiu Jitsu Academy.
Seth Shamp is the best instructor for Gracie Jiu Jitsu in North Carolina PERIOD. The atmosphere that Triangle Jiu Jitsu Academy has is the most welcoming and inviting gym you could go to. Giant facility! With a fight gear shop and crossfit all in the same buliding!
High quality instruction in a positive setting that's perfect for beginners. The instructors really know what they're doing. The people who make up the community are great to train with. The friends I have brought to classes as guests have all loved their experience... I highly recommend you go to Triangle Jiu Jitsu Academy, at any skill level!
Amazing place to learn how to defend yourself, be prepared to make lifelong friends.
What to say a great gym with a great instructor couldn't ask for a better experience !!!!!!
If you ever get an opportunity to train at Triangle Jiu Jitsu do yourself a favor and do it! Everybody treats you like family and goes above and beyond to make sure your experience is just awesome. The head instructor,Seth is one of the best instructors i have ever had the privilege of learning from and I cannot wait until my next lesson. 5 Stars just completely excellent!!
I started training with Triangle jiu-jitsu in 2010. Instructor Seth Shamp's ability to breakdown fundamental and advanced techniques of Royce Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu self-defense into an easily digestible curriculum for students of all ages and backgrounds in a gift. I have trained BJJ in gyms around the world. TJJ is second to none. The only reason why I do not train there today is because I moved to Asia in 2014. TJJ is my second family.
The instructors are fabulous and they have the best kids Jiu Jitsu program. All of the members are welcoming and encouraging.
I LOVE TJJ! My husband and I travel 2 hours one way at least once a week, sometimes twice, for Seth Shamp's instruction and the great team atmosphere that you can only find at TJJ. If you are looking for a welcoming environment and solid technique -- this is the right place for you!
Awesome facility with awesome people. Whether your interested in fitness, self defense, or competition, this academy has it all!
Triangle Jiu-Jitsu's facility, martial arts offerings, most of all the people are top. The owner and head instructor, Seth Shamp, is a decorated martial artist and an amazing teacher that connects to students of all levels, sizes, ages, and reasons for training. The environment is warm and friendly and the price is extremely reasonable (no contracts!). If you want to get in shape, learn how to defend yourself for a lifetime, or train to compete in sport jiu-Jitsu or MMA, check out TJJ! Jiujitsu changed my life and it can change yours too.
TJJ one of the best academies I've seen. Seth Shamp is an incredible instructor (trained by Royce Gracie himself!), and the people under him are there because they truly love jiu jitsu and its way of life. I could not have asked for a better experience here. If you're thinking about trying jiu jitsu, seeing what it's like, do it here. They'll take good care of you.
I have been training at Triangle Jiu Jitsu since 2009. I absolutely love Seth and all the instructors! I highly recommend Triangle Jiu Jitsu for self-defense and sport jiu jitsu! The gym has a great vibe - lots of fun!
I've trained at a few jiu jitsu gyms and TJJ stands out. Seth is a great teacher who cares about his students and the art of jiu jitsu. The environment is welcoming and open and the upper level belts are knowledgable and always willing to teach and help out. If you're looking for a new jiu jitsu gym or are looking to learn a new martial art, definitely check out Triangle Jiu Jitsu.

Great gym with great people, always helping each other get better!
Seth Shamp gives highly technical, highly detailed, highly fun instruction in a world class training center at TJJ. As Co-President of the Duke BJJ club Seth was the natural choice when it came to picking an instructor to teach pure, authentic jiu-jitsu.
Great place to train. Seth is a Gracie jiujitsu black belt and amazing instructor that runs a very friendly, positive and supportive martial arts academy. Gracie Jiujitsu teaches anyone, any age or gender a realistic Self defense based on controlling space and distance to stop sometimes a much larger opponent or an attacker. They have an awesome Kids program as well. Call to try a class and see why it’s the fastest growing martial art on the planet. Gracie Jiujitsu, brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Seth's great instruction, and attention to detail has led one of his top students Kim Rice to becoming a Jiu Jitsu World Champion!
I cannot speak highly enough of this academy. The people are great and the women who train there were the reason I kept coming back after my first class. Seth is truly a great instructor and a great person.
Great technical instruction. Plenty of upper belts to learn from as well. Really great group of people. Very nice facility with large, clean mat space. Also has a full cage and awesome mma training.
The teaching and camaraderie can not be beat.
The premiere, and authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu experience in the triangle area. The Professor is knowledgeable and has trained with some of the most respected names within the martial arts community. To be a member of TJJ is to be welcomed into family of diverse people, and not just another gym...
