Chris runs an amazing gym at Top Game! I've been training here for ~4 years and it amazes me how much I've learned in that time. I'm happy to say I will be with Chris and Top Game for years to come.
Chris is a great instructor. Shows all details in the techniques and patience when teaching. Highly recommend for all practitioners, whether competitive or enthusiast.

Chris in my opinion has the highest skill level in both BJJ and striking skills as a 4th degree black belt in tae kwon do, highly skilled in muay tai not to mention 4th degree in BJJ. Teaching skills are superior to any school I've been to and his character is composed of honesty and integrity. I feel my review hold relevance as we have attended other schools in area. Son and I have been attending here for 4 months and see a notable difference in our skills progressing. Son has been taking BJJ for about 3 years overall and enjoys his classes and never wants to miss class, his previous schools he did not look forward to attending.

I have gone gym to gym having to move because of my job, this gym is the best gym I’ve ever been to! The environment and the culture in this gym is truly amazing! Chris is very passionate and loves what he does and you can truly tell. If I can give 10 stars I would!
I've been training at TG for a couple years. Chris really knows his Jiu Jitsu. He teaches the basic techniques that will keep you safe and competitive for years to come. As you gain more skills, Chris offers more advanced technique for competition and growth. Top Game is like a family. Everyone knows each other and there is always someone willing to help newbies. One other great thing about this academy is the amount of upper belts that are in class always willing to work with students. Chris and the other Black belts are always active on the mat training and teaching. If your looking for a great academy save yourself some time and head over to Top Game BJJ.

Such an incredible experience so far at this gym. Everyone here welcomed me with open arms and even took time out of their learning and practice to help me get better. Chris is an outstanding person and teacher and I've already learned so much about this sport! Highly recommend to anybody considering joining.
One of the most affordable and best gyms in all of Richmond. The instruction has an old school bjj feel in a good way. There is a reliance on practical and efficient movements while also exploring newer bjj concepts. Many days, the lower belts are outnumbered by the upper belts. As a lower belt, I am lucky to learn from instructor Chris as well as many skilled peers. The energy in the gym is fun and relaxed. The gym is primarily hobbyists but also has a decent group of competitors and individuals who frequent the competition class. I saw one negative review regarding a refused refund. Two sides to every story, so just wanted to say Chris has helped me personally and other students get refunded when ending membership, moving, etc. (4 ish years here)
Great people and hard rolls, easily the best deal in the region. Also it’s nice that there are folks here that are amazing at gi and no-gi.

All willing to share n teach you regardless if your new or experienced will work around your injuries ( have plenty ) Prof Chris has established a no ego fun to train at whatever level you are atmosphere . Though serious in training yet so much laughter You will always have something to build on after each lesson and then you roll. You will find Prof Chris on the mat rolling with white belts to Blk belts. Truly a man dedicated to the sport . Top Game BJJ at Richmond va area is the best place to learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu Gi or NoGi with Chris Mahan 4th degree black at BJJ under the world bjj champ Gustavo great knowledges and experiences over 25 years.i signed up my two boys in there for almost 3 years very friendly and super nice with the kids. I trained here for 2 years. Chris is a phenomenal professor. He has a true passion and respect for martial arts. He makes you feel very comfortable from the moment you walk in. His teaching is top tier no matter if you’re a beginner or advanced. I would recommend this place to anyone living in the Richmond area as well as anyone visiting.

Chance Godwin, owner of Godwin Media here to say that I'm very happy I joined Top Game BJJ. As a 33 year old I'm starting from complete scratch, never having studied martial arts before. Chris, the owner & lead instructor, is warm and friendly and the academy has a culture of relaxed comradery, but the training is intense (in the best of ways). The class sizes are small so there's lots of opportunity to learn and ask questions and despite being an absolute beginner, guys of all belt colors are generously willing to roll with me and give me pointers. I've learned a lot in the first two weeks and have a feeling I'm going to spending a lot of time training with these guys in the months and years to come.
I was in Richmond for 3 weeks and was so happy to get to train at such a great school. Chris is a very adept teacher and is on the mats rolling with everyone, every class. I am a BJJ black belt with many years of experience and I learned something new every class – I definitely took away very useful knowledge! I've been training at Top Game for about a year and half at this point. I train in BJJ and Muay Thai/Kickboxing. The level of instruction from Coaches Chris Mahan and Clay is top notch. There are so many positive things it has brought to my quality of life. As a lifelong wrestler and military veteran, the ability to train and compete with a brotherhood and team of dedicated martial artists is very valuable to me. Just staying with some family in the area and thought I'd try to make it to a gym a few times while I was in the area. Sent Chris an email a few days in advance and went by today! First experience traveling and showing up to a gym was a fantastic experience. Went over a few things and rolled with some people. First of all I could tell that the people I rolled with knew their stuff! Everyone was super friendly! Chris is an awesome instructor! If I lived in Richmond I wouldn't think twice about training here!
Found this gym while visiting Richmond for work. Professor Chris and his team were very accommodating and friendly. Really competitive rolls! Highly recommend! Guaranteed that I will be coming back when I am in the area.

Fantastic school. Chris is an amazing instructor, and the atmosphere is inviting yet competitive. I was a transplant, training here for 6 months, and had a blast with the high level of experience and belts. Highly recommend!
I was in an ugly divorce and custody battle with my son's mom. My son's mother would only take him to practice if I agreed to pay ALL of the lessons for a year UPFRONT. I paid the YEAR of lessons UPFRONT. In February I was awarded full custody and my son moved to Colorado with me. Chris at Top Game told me he wouldn't refund me for the unused lessons (9 mos worth). These guys know what they're doing as far as Jujitsu but, I'll never get past the utter lack of integrity.
