Such a wonderful place. Our 6yo son attended Gracie Bullyproof for over six months and had an amazing experience. The teachers are incredible with the kids. The kids have fun, bond and become friends, and begin learning the foundations of the discipline and of understanding personal space, bullying, and asserting their own of boundaries and agency. Many (almost all) women teachers and teacher’s aids created a truly inclusive environment. What a wonderful little community hiding in plain sight in this unassuming strip mall. Can’t recommend enough.

The instructors (Mike, Suzanne, Brandy, and Cole) are super knowledgeable and friendly. I’ve been here for almost a year and the entire school feels like family. You see all ages and genders training and encouraging each other throughout their martial arts journey. In addition, they have a well established emphasis on their members safety and well being. I’ve trained at other jiu jitsu academy’s and this by far is a prefect fit for functional jiu jitsu/self-defense. They’re inviting to new comers, as well as beginners. I could not have found a better place to train.

I personally believe that everyone should enjoy the benefits of self-defense, especially our young ladies. That's why I went looking for a martial arts school for my 10 yo daughter about four years ago. We have a kazillion TKD studios in the West End to select from but I choose the Bushin Martial Arts Academy of RIchmond, instead, despite it being located 25 minutes away, each way. I've known the Nguyen family, Michael and Suzanne, for about 10 years. They are EXACTLY the kind of people I want as role models in my child's life! I have been so impressed with their character and integrity, the level of instruction and the caliber of their students that I started studying BJJ with them over a year ago, at my somewhat advanced age. Bottom line: BMAA is the kind of martial arts school that is worth driving cross-town twice/wk for the past four years.

I was a child last time I took karate lessons, but wanted to get back into it as an adult to stay active. After researching the various dojos in the Richmond area, I settled on BMAA and their Shorin Ken Karate-do program. I was immediately welcomed into the dojo family and receive excellent, frequently one-on-one instruction. The instructors are all patient with my questions and take into account every student's needs in planning out exercises, drills, kata, partner activities, and the like. Anyone interested in learning Japanese or Okinawan-derived martial arts would be well-served by joining BMAA's karate program.

Bushin Martial Arts Academy of Richmond is wonderful. I cannot recommend them strongly enough! I did not have a background in Martial Arts at all, so I was hesitant to try, but I'm so glad I did! I started training with them in the Women Empowered program. From day 1, I was super comfortable in the environment they have cultivated. The women's class is taught by women which immediately made it feel safer. The instructors are knowledgeable and work with you to make the techniques work for you. They are sensitive to physical limitations and any past trauma that may impact your training. I loved the women's class so much that I eventually joined the Combative's class open to all adults. The instructors have created such a great atmosphere that is safe and ego-less. The focus is on teamwork and learning together. In short, the school easily becomes family. I never thought I'd be a practitioner of any Martial Art, but Bushin Academy made it easy and fun to learn self defense. If you're wondering where to train or send your kids, this is definitely the place!

Bushin Martial Arts of Richmond is simply put Amazing! When you join Bushin you become a part of a family. It is a group that truly cares about one another, cheers for one another, and is fully focused on helping each other grow. I remember sitting in the parking lot staring at the door trying to build up the courage to walk in my first time there. I was in my thirties, I was out of shape (and coming from a rather athletic background about 10 years before that was afraid to embarrass myself). I was worried I wouldn't be up for the challenge or would get hurt by more experienced people. Well I finally walked in and all of that went right of the window. The head instructor talked with me for a good while to get to know me. From there they taught me personally my first technique. There was no bashing, beating, or "testing out the new guy." After that I was hooked! The techniques taught here are easy enough to learn. Because I made the choice to go in that door I feel more self-confident, safe, less-stressed, and in better shape, not to mentioned I gained many life-long friends. The instructors are truly amazing people, they have created an atmosphere that encourages helping one another. My suggestion is don't be worried, scared, or afraid just walk in the door and say hi! From there the Bushin atmosphere will take over and you can enjoy the ride for the rest of your time there!

I live in Williamsburg, VA and have chosen to travel, an hour each way, to train with Mike and Suzanne Nguyen because they are two of the most highly-educated, compassionate, honest, encouraging and sincere instructors I have ever trained with. They have created a truly safe environment in which ALL students can feel secure in knowing they are in a safe place to learn and practice techniques. After training with 3 martial arts' schools in Virginia, BMAA in Richmond is the ONLY school I would recommend to my friends, my own family and anyone looking for a high-quality training environment in which to learn self-defense skills.

As a martial artist, I came to this school to develop more of my ground technique. Between visiting and or teaching at other schools, I can say this school is really one of the best of the best. I trained in high school and quit for many years, then started training again many moons ago and over the years have met hundreds of martial artist. I cannot say enough good things about Bushin Martial Arts Academy (BMAA) of Richmond and its members. I live an hour away from the school and travel 4-5 days a week to train at BMAA of Richmond because there is no other place like it. The owners put their hearts and souls into the school and their students to pass along decades of martial arts experience. It has been a privilege to train and now teach at BMAA of Richmond. I love being able to give back to a community that has given me so much. Watching the BullyProof kids grow and develop -learning to help and take care of each other- has been an incredible experience. Children who may have been shy on their first day, now greet new classmates with confidence, a good hand shake, and help them learn how to tie their belts. It is a family community that helps and supports each other inside and outside of the dojo. I could not ask for a better group of people to train with day in and day out.

The bullyproof program is amazing! The instructors have such a great way of conveying real life knowledge to our kids, teaching them how to avoid conflict but if unavoidable, how to protect themselves and not become victims. The teaching doesn’t stop in the dojo either, they routinely reinforce the importance of respect for family, friends and classmates and I see many of the kids out in public maintaining these values in their daily life! THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!!!! My son has had some difficulties with his self esteem and confidence in the past. This is the most wonderful, happy, encouraging environment. I love their LOVE for all of the students. The instructors teach and show these children respect, boundaries, how important it is to follow rules, responsibility, and help them grow physically and mentally. The instructors show so much respect to their students and their families. My son doesn't just train here, he has shown so much growth physically and mentally. THEY ARE FAMILY!!!!! Bushin Martial Arts Academy has been a great blessing and true investment for our family. As a parent, respect and self discipline are definitely traits that I want my kids to carry with them FOREVER!!!!!

The instructors teach discipline and lifestyle as well as the self defense aspect. I will be bringing my children here when they reach the bully-proof age as well, because of the great things I’ve already seen.

I have been exercising at Bushin for around 5 years now. I am not a natural athlete nor do I generally enjoy group exercise classes. What keeps me coming back here is the personalized attention to detail that I get from the instructors and the other students. Everyone here is very positive, genuinely engaged, and psychologically present during the classes. This allows techniques to be practiced, explored, and understood in stunning clarity, from the mechanical execution level all the up to the level of a coherent overarching self defense philosophy. I’ve been going to Bushin for about 6 months now and can’t say enough good things about the Quality of technique taught by the staff. I’ve been training Jiu-Jitsu on and off for 7 years now and have noticed a difference already in my game. I am very impressed with the amount of detail that is taught. I highly recommend this place to anyone new to jiujitsu or currently training to improve there game.

Great environment, the instructors are great! My son started out in the anti bullying camp. He loved it so much that he wanted to take the classes. He did this for awhile and ended up trying out the karate class. The woman empowerment classes were wonderful and I learned a lot from the instructors. By doing this my son’s confidence soared and he feels he can do anything.

If you find it acceptable to have a 6 year old perform 50 push-ups for bumping into an instructor during a dodgeball game (not my child), or allow for another student to make disparaging comments about another students abilities in front of the class because an uneducated instructor deems child falls "on purpose" even after repeated explanations of a child's physical therapy program to regain strength after a major surgical procedure, then by all means send your children here. (Please note this business is using false pretenses to have my review removed from multiple rating sites.)
