I have two boys who have trained with Sword under Coach Chris for coming up on 3 years. He strikes, in my opinion, a delicate and very important balance of the following: - All skill levels and appropriate age groups receive instruction and get solid reps in basic skills, while those with more advanced skills continue to grow. - He maintains high standards, demands adherence and gives instant, constructive feedback. During tournaments, he is there as a coach and mentor, an example of teamwork focused on the idea that outcomes and placing are only a slice of the goal/accomplishment; the process of the daily grind is the main lesson for those who compete. This review also serves as a thank you and goodbye, as we are moving out of the area soon. Coach Chris, thank you for your consistency in training. My boys are leaving sad, but proud and accomplished after nearly 3 years.

Chris, Mateus, Bobby…. everyone at The Sword have been amazing instructors for my son. My son goes religiously every day for 5 years, the academy has changed my son for the better both in life and on the mat. Thank you The Sword, we are proud to be apart of the family 💪

We’ve been so grateful for our time at The Sword Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. My son can be a little shy at first, but Coach Chris and his team have a way of connecting with the kids that feels genuine and calm while still keeping them focused and disciplined. Cameron comes home proud of what he learned, excited to show us new moves, and even more importantly, he’s learning respect, patience, and self-control in a way that actually sticks.

The coach is incredibly patient with kids, knows how to keep them engaged, and clearly cares deeply about teaching both jiu jitsu and promoting good character. You can tell there's a real passion behind what he does. The environment is welcoming, supportive, and structured. We've seen growth in resilience, confidence, and skill in both our kids. Highly recommend for families looking for a positive place for their kids to learn and train!

Chris and his team of instructors are absolutely amazing. My three daughters attended his gym, and the increase in self-esteem and discipline was immediately apparent. Other than the benefits my girls got from self-defense, self-esteem, and overall physical fitness, his prices are great, especially since I can take them 6 days a week! (5 days of instruction and an open mat on Saturdays). This is a great way to run it when you can't always set a schedule or when you have to miss a day due to an unplanned event. We are sad to be leaving Alaska, or we would have remained with Chris for years. We wish him the best of luck, and if we ever return, we know exactly where to train!
