Dropped in for a class + open mat. Super friendly and welcoming environment. Josh is an exceptional instructor and is passionate about jiu jitsu. Highly recommended!
Friendly team, quality clean facilities, awesome environment and people. JJC was my introduction into jiu jitsu and don't regret my choice. Definitely try it out if you are considering
An outstanding Jiujitsu gym, all around. I dropped in from out of town and the experience was great. I got a prompt response to my inquiry, and went to an early class. Great instruction from Paul. The staff was professional, courteous, and respectful. The facility was very clean, well organized, and well appointed. If you’re looking for great Jiujitsu training in a cool part of Philadelphia. Check out the Jiu Jitsu Company. It is one of the best Jiu Jitsu gyms in Philadelphia. I will be making it my regular place to train Jiu Jitsu when I travel to Philly.
Highly recommend, friendly, talented and super clean spot in a unique and beautiful location of Philly. Has everything you need and even showers
I’ve been training at The Ju Jitsu Company (JJC) for about six months, and the experience has been fantastic. Both Coach Josh’s expert feedback and Angie’s approach create a supportive, welcoming environment. One of the things I appreciate most is their flexible schedule—they have classes throughout the week, even on Sundays. Also, the “Drills and Skills” class is a game-changer: you pick what you want to work on and receive personalized coaching. I highly recommend JJC for anyone looking to learn and grow in Jiu Jitsu.
Great experience at Jiu Jitsu co. The coach was very technical and easy to understand. The students were all very nice. They were technical and good at flo rolling. If you happen to be in philly, drop in and check it out!
We hosted Josh from the Jiu Jitsu Company for a workshop and were blown away by his knowledge, teaching ability and friendliness. Josh is a world class competitor, coach and has an incredible way of simplifying complex ideas to students of all levels. We look forward to having him back and can’t recommend him and The Jiu Jitsu Company enough
The best place for jiu jitsu in Philly! Not close!
Best gym, with the best coaches. Extremely welcoming environment. Everyone is super awesome and is there to help you become the best practitioner you can be.
I’ve really enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and fantastic learning experience at JJC! Folks are friendly, calm, and dedicated to ensuring positive outcomes on the mat. If you’re wondering where to learn real jiu jitsu in a methodical way, give it a go at JJC!
My family and I were brand new to jujitsu and completely intimidated so I signed us up for personal training. The space is compact and very clean with amenities such as a shower and endless gummy bears. The teachers were amazing and made us feel comfortable. They rolled with our goofiness and we learned a lot.
Lots of love from vb. GREAT VIBES DROP IN WELCOME SUPA SUPA CLEAN
Did a drop in. Owners and everyone were incredibly kind and generous. The gym is one of the nicest I've been too and the class was very informative.
Really fun gym with amazing teaching! The people here are very approachable and the jiu jitsu is high level and safe. The place is spotless too! Would definitely recommend!
Visiting philadelphia so dropped into their sunday open mat. It is just around the corner from the 2nd street metro station. I booked my hotel on the mfl line to make it easier to get there. The owner mentioned that he doesnt usually allow non-members to the open mat because he isnt there to make sure they are safe to roll. He happened to be there so it was all good. We both joked that everyone says they roll light.. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and rolled super smooth and chill matching my pace, even the 8 month white belt (though Im sure you could get hard rolls if you want). The gym was immaculate and had a shower and a changing room.
Great teaching, clean facility, and very kind people. I dropped in for a month so I’m almost as unbiased as they come. I strongly recommend training here.
So much I can say about the short amount of time I experienced at this gym. Regardless, whether you’re super experienced or novice like myself, it was very easy to drop in. Everybody was so nice the coaching was incredible and I learned a lot in the short time I was there. Highly recommend the school for anyone and next time I’m in town I’ll be dropping in again
I had a great session at the gym today on my visit from England. Great coaches, atmosphere and an amazing facility. Would highly recommend if you’re in Philadelphia
I pop in from time to time on business travel and the JJC is always a great experience. Really thoghtful instruction, great partners and super clean facilities.
Dropped into the JJC while in Philly for a conference, and I had a great time. The instructors are friendly, knowledgeable, and excellent teachers. I really appreciated how clean and high quality the mats are. They’ve got two spacious areas to roll and even a nice little weights area with various workout equipment. Good times!
Did a drop in as I am out of town. Had a good time. Gym had about 10 people at a variety of levels, with about a 50:50 gender ratio. Gym was very clean and had locker rooms. Everyone was really welcoming.
Had a fantastic time as a drop in. Excellent facility, coaching, and vibes. Will return and highly Richland to anyone stopping by to drop in and train!
Awesome community! Everyone is super respectful and welcoming. The whole place is very clean and organized. Definitely recommend it!
Awesome instruction, training partners and facilities. Josh is a genuinely amazing dude. It was a pleasure to train with him and his team!
I highly recommend JJC; if you are looking for high quality instruction with a supportive community, this is an ideal place to learn and grow.
Got a day pass ($20) and attended the 12pm drills class and the 1pm open mat Great facility - clean mats, solid weights area that you can use too, nice showers, towel rental too Great atmosphere - coach and training partners make you feel welcome Highly recommend whenever passing through Philly
Excellent training environment with lots of attention to detail. Staff is marvelous and work hard to ensure the training environment is friendly and well-managed. Any chance you get to try the place for yourself, you should take it.
I’ve only been a member here for less than a month but I absolutely love it so far. The owners are great and easy to talk to. All the higher belts are also accessible and let you ask questions or roll if you want. Classes are well organized for beginners, mats are clean, and they even have free candy in the front! 10/10 would recommend and I drive forty minutes each way to get here so you know it’s a solid gym with great people.
Dropped in while in town, and had an amazing time. Great instruction (including lots of individual feedback), beautiful/clean facilities, and overall incredibly welcoming vibe. Thank you, Josh and Angie! Will absolutely be back next time I’m around!
My husband and I have a school locally, and let me tell you, this place is great! Beautiful facility and warm, welcoming staff! Would definitely recommend If you’re looking to level up in the sport.
You won't find better training in or around Philadelphia. I've known Josh and Angie for about 6 or 7 years now and met them when they coached/trained elsewhere. Aside from group instruction I've also done countless private sessions with Josh over the years and he's an open book, incredibly personable, and brilliant at his craft. They're two of the best people you could hope to meet let alone get the pleasure of training with, so if you're thinking about Jiu Jitsu this is the place to be.
The Vibe here is so positive! Super clean! Great instruction and an awesome team to train with! I came here because I was referred. So glad I found this place!
Awesome group of people, family like environment!
I’m not a student here, but I know Josh and a few of the students at JJC and have nothing but great things to say about them all. I’m a black belt, I started training roughly 10 years ago and Josh actually taught me my first class ever. He was then, and continues to be a studious practitioner of the sport. I would definitely recommend training here!
i've attended once and i honestly was blown away at how clean and hygienic the place is. also josh, angie and the rest of the jjc crew were more than welcoming. highly recommend!
Excellent school. Josh the co-owner is a world class coach and competitor. He and Angie developed a thoughtful curriculum leveraging 20+ years of experience and modern teaching technology. JJC’s assistant coaches are skilled, friendly and smart. They are consistently growing the game. JJC has elevated the bar. Simply come visit and roll with any of their students. Amazing the lot of them
JJC is really a great BJJ club for fun, community and to get good at grappling skills. Three reasons to sum them up: 1) High emphasis on positional sparring. When training BJJ, positional sparring improves skills better than just random rolling or “fighting.” After every class and drilling, there’s positional spars involved, to test or to sharpen the skills after training. It really helps me a lot here! 2) Wednesday Drills & Skills. Most schools follow a curriculum or that it’s the “teacher’s lessons.” On Wednesdays, if there’s something you want to work on, whether it’s cool YouTube or competitions skills you personally want to work on, or even from Hollywood, Wednesday’s the best place for your personal training. And, Josh will come around help each person’s individual projects as best as he can. 3) If you value safety above all else, this school really emphasizes it. Every class, they always constantly repeat “Remember, look out for yourself, your partner’s safety and everyone around you. We don’t want anyone to be hurt.” It’s too much to count how much. Pretty much every class, they say that. And so far, nobody got hurt during drilling and training. Great club, and great coaches. Angie & Josh Vogel and everyone else are great people! We may be a bunch of weirdos! But, we’re still a fun bunch. All personalities are welcomed to this Band of Misfit Pirates here, In an Adventure with Scientists!
Awesome gym with great instructors and students. If you’re in the area do a drop in better yet sign up it’ll be worth it. A quality BJJ gym.
This school is amazing and welcoming to everyone and I mean everyone. The teachers are awesome, very friendly warm environment that fosters good vibes. Incredible jiu jitsu instruction as well. I’ve received personalized attention in each and every class even when there’s large groups of people. Highly recommend jiu jitsu co to everyone
I have dropped in at The Jiu Jitsu company a few times since they’ve opened and have been met with nothing but hospitality and professionalism. The instruction and curriculum are top notch which they continue to improve upon by integrating technology and instructional videos supporting the material being presented. If you’re in the Philly area you can’t go wrong here.
Good People, good Jiu Jitsu. What else can you ask for?
Recently moved to Philly and wanted to find a new place to train. JJC has been the perfect place with top tier teaching, high level training partners, and a friendly and welcoming environment. I recommend this place to anyone new or already experienced, it's been awesome.
Returned to the sport from a long absence and checked out several gyms before picking this one. Josh and Angie have carefully constructed a gym culture built around respect, mutual benefit, and focused on building technical skills instead of egos. The benefit of this culture is much more than just a nice perk for the gym's members: Jiu Jitsu is an art form and a sport with inherent risks, but their approach minimizes the risk to one's health and maximizes one's longevity. Furthermore, their teaching style is focused on technical application of proper technique and helping students develop their own problem solving abilities, such that they can do more than just read the music of Jiu Jitsu, they can write their own. When training here, it's obvious that no one here cares more about beating you than they care about your safety, and this is not something that can be said for many of the gyms that teach this art form. The best proof of their gym's superior culture and thoughtful teaching style is the nature of the white belts (beginners) at this gym: by far the least thrashing and flailing, most fundamentally and technically sound, and calmest white belts I've ever trained with, and that speaks volumes about the power of the culture of this gym and the quality of its instruction. Combat sports have always been plagued by toxic competiveness and ego that increases everyone's risk of injury and ruins everyone's fun. This gym is a carefully constructed oasis of good attitudes and great culture that must be protected. If you're looking to train Jiu Jitsu without suffering through abusive and aggressive attitudes and constant injuries, there's no better place in town. It's also a well-kept and aesthetically pleasing facility, nice staff and patrons, clean bathrooms, quality mats, and even has a patio. Should you find any unlettered bad reviews of this gym from histrionic and pathologically egotistical types, know that it is simply further evidence of the quality of this gym. Simply put, highly recommend.
Great gym!
My buddy Mike recommended this school to me. It's great.
I highly recommend the Jiu Jitsu Company. Anytime my students are in the area, I recommend them to attend this gym. The instruction is very high level, the facilities and training methodology is modern and I have nothing but positive things to say about Josh and Angie!
I started training at JCC this year. I had no idea what to expect having very little to no background in martial arts and yet, once started, my enthusiasm for the sport has only continued to increase exponentially. I truly believe that this enthusiasm was largely spawned by the warm and welcoming atmosphere JCC has cultivated over the years. I highly reccomend starting or continuing your Jiu Jitsu journey at this wonderful gym!
I started training Jiu Jitsu in March of this year (2023) and have had nothing but positive experiences at The Jiu Jitsu Company. Josh and Angie have built an outstanding community that embodies the school’s slogan: “Good Training, In Good Company”. The training team, across all levels of the curriculum, are excellent. The facilities (changing rooms, gym equipment, mats, showers, etc) are top notch and clean. My training partners are all respectful, friendly and down to earth. If you’re looking for a school that supports its athletes through community and an organized approach to BJJ, look no further. After only training for 6 months I won double gold (Gi and No-Gi) at my first competition; a testament to the standard of excellence, extensive support, and professionalism that make up the fabric of this school. JJC is the real deal!
From the moment you step into The Jiu Jitsu Company, you're greeted by an atmosphere that is both welcoming and professional. The core values of the establishment - culture-forward, accessible, and inclusive - are evident in every aspect of the training and environment. The expert instructors, led by Josh and Angela Vogel, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. Josh, a multi-degree black belt with over 18 years of experience, and Angela, also a black belt with a decade in Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, ensure that every session is both challenging and rewarding. The facility itself is immaculate, boasting top-quality Zebra mats and Rogue lifting equipment, complemented by spa-quality showers and amenities. It's not just a gym; it's a space where you can genuinely focus on your training and well-being. Moreover, the partnership with Wodify adds a unique touch, integrating technology into the training experience. This allows members to access training schedules, curricula, and personalized feedback, enhancing the learning process even outside the gym. As a member, I've seen firsthand how The Jiu Jitsu Company fosters a community where everyone, regardless of skill level, feels valued and supported. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced practitioner, this is a place where you can grow, learn, and be part of a vibrant community. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Jiu Jitsu in Philadelphia!
Best BJJ gym in the city. Family owned place that is neat, clean, and top notch. The JJC takes a technical and academic approach to the sport and has an incredibly knowledgeable coaching staff. No canceled classes. Clean facility. Incredible members. If you wanna train BJJ in the city, this is the place to do it. There’s a reason why this place has 200+ members and high membership retention. Keep it up Angie and Josh!
JJC has always facilitated a safe and thoughtful training environment.. not to mention the changing rooms and bathrooms are always spotless with towel service... their water is also triple filtered which is nice in Philly. Class times are consistent and when there are changes, they communicate this well in advance via their instagram page. I’m a relative beginner and have a great time rolling with a range of folks from white to brown belts, with the higher belts making me work for it, but also not just submitting me within 3 seconds (which I know they could). To the Shane guy who recently posted a 1 star review, you ragged on white belts for not being good in gi in the FUNDAMENTALS class.. how else do you recommend beginners improve? Then you continued to insult the instructor and owners of JJC as if you were the godfather of jiu jitsu.. even if you were, you’d then understand the respect and discipline aspect of the sport. Cmon dude, do better.
Best BJJ school in the city. Clean, friendly, and instruction for people of all levels! High level, kind instructors and good vibes all around, definitely give this place a visit!
I've been training here every week for about 2 months, and I have been enjoying it. The owners are fantastic people and their other instructors are talented and accommodating. In my 35 classes, across fundamentals, positional sparring, takedowns, and open mat, I have not come across anyone with a bad attitude. I can't recommend this place enough, whether you have trained before or if you are curious about what Jiu Jitsu is all about.
This place is hands down amazing! I’ve been training here for the past 2.5 months, and have been extremely happy with everything here. Having previously trained at several other Jiu Jitsu gyms, JJC is a literal breath of fresh air. Everyone from the ownership to the coaches and the training partners are friendly, encouraging, and willing to help you achieve whatever your goals are. I have never felt left out or judged, which has sadly happened before at other gyms. The curriculum is structured so that you think more critically and use what you’re learning actively. I have already changed my approach to training, and I’m already seeing tangible results. There are ample extra opportunities to expand on your training, and Josh and Angie go above and beyond to provide the ultimate Jiu Jitsu experience for their students. There are students of all levels here too, and whether you’re in the fundamentals or advanced program, you’ll get a great education. I can’t wait to see where my progress will go from here. I didn’t even talk about the facilities yet. It has everything a Jiu Jitsu practitioner could ever dream of: clean mats, two bathrooms with showers, full amenities, and towel service, changing rooms, a lifting area and multiple opportunities to practice yoga and recovery. And gummy bears. I can’t forget the gummy bears to fuel your training or the rest of your day. I live in southern New Jersey, and there are plenty of gyms close to home for me. The fact that I’m willing to commute to Philly multiple times a week to take class here speaks volumes as to the quality of instruction I’m receiving here. This is my Jiu Jitsu home. Run, don’t walk, and come train here. You will love it too.
If you’re looking for quality training with quality people this is the place to be, everyone is incredibly kind and supportive.JJC takes an academic approach to techniques and training that truly benefits all skill levels. Definitely not a lie when they say good training in good company.
I did a few drop in class throughout a week and found the team to be friendly and knowledgeable. Even being just a drop in student Josh took the time to coach and teach throughout the week.
Beautiful and Unique Gym with Innovative Coaching and Training Only Found Here I travel a lot and have had the opportunity to train at facilities all over the United States and the world. One thing I have learned is that there are multiple levels of gym and training quality. I haven’t seen a bad gym yet but I can easily say that this gym is world class and at the top of the places I have visited. Smaller and cozy but roomy enough to accommodate good class sizes. Excellent ambiance, friendly trainers and participants, clean and inviting… the list goes on. The top thing that set this gym apart was the involvement of the Vogels. As a visitor to gyms, I often call to make sure I can participate and, in the couple hours it takes to make it to the gym, the person I talked to has forgotten all about our conversation. Here, Josh came out and immediately greeted me along with Angie and gave me a quick tour of the facility. I felt like a VIP even though I was merely a visitor. The instruction was fantastic, I did everything on the Wednesday evening menu. Fundamentals class worked on true fundamentals and, even though the subject was one of my favorite techniques that I am already well versed in, I learned a ton. The next hour was the Skills & Drills… sounds basic enough but it’s way more than what the class title suggests. Josh has an approach to skill acquisition akin to Project Based Learning where you pick something you want to improve and you work it with a partner using a structured approach laid out and coached by Josh. You get three levels of feedback: self, your partner, and Josh… and you work this one move for the entire hour. Josh then gives advice on how to build this into a multi week program to “perfect” your technique. Gym owners set the culture of their gyms. Josh and Angie have turned this into an amazing place. Beautiful design, music for rolling was a welcome relief to the usual gangster rap or aggressive metal featured most places (90s music was featured when I was there), and Josh’s many references to music, video games, and sushi as analogy to BJJ is extremely unique. You can tell that he thinks about this sport a lot. I would solidly place him and the gym into the magic of how American style BJJ is evolving this sport. The Jiu Jitsu Company is the perfect place for a beginner to start their BJJ journey as well as a place for seasoned veterans to progress. I got a chance to roll with a competitor from the gym. The guy I rolled with slowly, steadily, and gently had his way with me for a full round. If I lived in Philly, I can imagine that the rabbit hole of growth is quite extensive. I’m now looking for an excuse to get back if only to train again here. It’s definitely a destination gym. Highly recommend.
This is a great gym. I ended up trying a few gyms in the area and this was by far the best. The coach provided actionable feedback, the students were very kind and helpful, as well. This is a gym I’d suggest for anyone at any level of jiu jitsu.
The best of the best. Easily some of the friendliest people I've met through a drop in class while travelling. The Jiu jitsu quality is really good to! Can't recommend this place enough. Thank you Josh and Angie.
Was visiting from out of town and caught a class and an open mat. Great instruction, nice people, clean showers. Would definitely recommend to locals and visitors!
A very good looking gym with with good members and a great coach. The head coach explains the context and applications for jiu jitsu very well. The members were all very technical and friendly. Can’t recommend enough
I had an amazing experience as a drop in at The Jiu Jitsu Company! Off the mat, Josh was so welcoming and provided me and my guest (who wasn’t rolling) with great hospitality. He went out of his way to make her comfortable, which I really appreciated. On the mat, he was also great! He refined my technique and gave me pointers to improve my game. The vibes of the class were excellent and I could tell that people really value the culture. Everyone was encouraging but focused. Hopefully I can make my way back sooner than later!
This gym is AWESOME! Professors Josh and Angie are so friendly, encouraging and knowledgeable. The community they have fostered here is top notch and one of the best gyms I have trained in. I dropped in on Wed/Sat for class and open mat respectively. Coach Tanner (I think that was his name) went over guard passing and was very patient while I learned the torreando pass. On Sat I got some awesome rolls with some dope people. Everyone was kind, friendly and careful. At no point in my rolls did I ever feel like I was in danger of getting hurt/injured. It was all just beautiful controlled chaos. The gym is clean, they have showers, a dedicated changing room and it's climate controlled. I cannot wait to come back to Philly again and stop in for class. Thanks again TJJC! Ossss
Clean, good mat space, awesome facility, friendly staff and great training partners. Definitely come check this place out if you’re looking for a gym. It’s conveniently placed right next to a cookie shop so you can get a good post-workout snack too.
I have been training on and off for years always searching for the right team and I’m happy to say I’ve finally found my crew. Great group of people, great training, great facility. I’d go everyday if my schedule allowed. Thanks Josh and Angie for being so welcoming and great coaches! 🙏🏾
Great owners and coaches. Technical jiu-jitsu in a welcoming and supportive community. The facility is very clean and well-kept. Recommend!
Really great people to train with and just be around. I highly suggest you bring yourself and your whole family in to see what they offer.
Incredible staff and system. Other students are very welcoming and they have some straight animals there. Prices are competitive with rest of market. Would suggest to anyone looking for Judo and BJJ training.
There are may Jiu Jitsu schools, but this is my Jiu Jitsu school! Jiu Juitsu won't feel as a painful grinding experience, but rather as a game! JJC is a party where everyone is invited. You will always be welcomed, you will be safe!
Great gym! I stopped in as a guest and everyone was super friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely my new go-to spot when I’m in Philly. Thanks for the roll 🤙🏼
Dropped in for open mat while in town visiting a friend, very friendly and professional! Clean gym too, great experience and would recommend
I was looking for a place to drop in while in town and kept getting this place recommended on Reddit. Josh himself reached out on my post, and he and Angie were amazingly welcoming, inclusive, and gave fantastic instruction. Their approach to BJJ in the Skills & Drills class was super helpful and a new learning style I’d love to explore more of. Everyone I rolled with was technically proficient and smooth to train with. Awesome facility, highly recommend!
Visited the Ju Jitsu Company on our travels. The people were friendly, the gym was clean, and the instruction was outstanding. Would highly recommend this place to everyone and we will be returning the next time we are in Philly.
The first time I ever trained BJJ was at The Jiu Jitsu Company. At the time I knew nothing about the sport, but I was excited to try it out. I trained there for 8 months and eventually moved back home to Long Island, NY. I recently went to a Jiu Jitsu gym here and it made me realize how special JJC is. So much so, I felt the need to write this review. Now let me brag about JJC real quick... First and foremost, JJC instructors are patient! They explain techniques clearly, give reasons for every little adjustment, and allow the students to troubleshoot problems as they arise. Instructors and higher belts are always willing to answer questions without getting frustrated or annoyed. The fundamentals curriculum is organized in a way that makes sense, and classes are structured so that students get the most out of each session. They are kind and welcoming, no egos, no judgements. I am so fortunate to have started my BJJ training at a place as wonderful as JJC. Thank you Angie & Josh for providing the jiu jitsu community with this space, I truly did not know how good I had it.
Josh and Mikhail were amazing. The atmosphere is friendly, respectful, but intense! Great facilities and really good training partners. I dropped in from out of town and did the fundamentals course, followed by advanced and open mats. I highly recommend this gym to anyone at any level of BJJ.
As someone who has traveled and dropped in at many gyms around the world, none of them are able to check off all of the things The Jiu Jitsu Company is able to provide. Whether you’re a beginner looking to get started on your BJJ journey or a more experienced practitioner looking for a new BJJ home in Philadelphia, look no further than The Jiu Jitsu Company. What Josh and Angie have created at The Jiu Jitsu Company is the embodiment of what the ideal BJJ school should be and be able to provide. An accessible and convenient location off public transport, an ample amount of mat space for training to take place on, clean and pristine showers and facilities, amenities such as multiple water stations, towel service, and a dedicated recovery/strength and conditioning area, extremely technical and knowledgeable instructors that have built robust beginners and advanced curriculums that promote problem solving skills, and a culture and training environment full of training partners that are not only warm and welcoming but also able to perform well on the competition scene. I give The Jiu Jitsu Company a perfect 5/5 stars and HIGHLY recommend it to everyone. 😃
I attended a seminar at the jiu jitsu company recently and it truly was an amazing experience. Josh and Angie were welcoming, friendly and so professional. The facility was very clean and neat. The seminar was brilliant and provided so many good tips on improving positional strength. I recommend this awesome school to anybody considering learning jiu jitsu in the old city area. ** edited a year later for future review After attending the seminar listed above, I decided to join the jiu jitsu company. Angie and josh welcomed me with open arms and the transition was seamless. From the other members being so friendly and easy going, to the spotless changing room/facilities - this gym is top tier. What stands out the most to me is the attention to detail josh and Angie show while teaching and preparing for classes. Any question you have will be met with an informative answer and or vivid analogy that will leave you with your answer. If you’re thinking of contacting the good people over at the jiu jitsu company, what are you waiting for?! You won’t regret trying out this well run business with owners that care about each and every student.
Genuinely lovely group of people, clean, cozy, and modern facility, and the instruction was very good as well. Would highly recommend for travelers and locals alike.
Josh and Angie are passionate business owners and detail oriented in the presentation of their Jiu Jitsu and their space. Top notch and friendly. I’d give more stars if I could.
Attended a seminar there a while ago. Place was immaculately clean, content taught was phenomenal, and training partners were the right mix of fun and focused for me!
Dropped in for a weekday afternoon class in early December. As a visiting black belt, you sometimes aren't really sure what you're going to get; sometimes nobody wants to train with you, other times you get all the heavy hitters wanting to simulate the Mundials. I had a blast training with Angie, Josh and their crew and absolutely loved my experience there. The gym is centered in a great part of town, has a ton of amenities (even towel service!), good folks and good training. I would highly recommend dropping in if you are visiting Philadelphia.
10/10. Highly recommend. Josh, Angie, and all the instructors are great. You will receive high level instruction that will elevate your game. They apply a systematic approach to teaching through different curriculums/blocks that build off of each other as well as encouraging problem solving to find solutions to different problems you could come across. You have access to gi, no gi, leg locks, judo, and wrestling classes all in one place. The gym is also immaculately kept.
Amazing people run this jiu Jistu gym. Not only is the instructionals top class but there is an awesome culture to this gym. The facility is also perfect - clean bathrooms and shower, quick drying mats, etc
I have been training here pretty much since they opened and feel I'm long overdue to share a review. Whether you are a total beginner, seasoned competitor, or a hobbyist, this is an excellent place to learn and train BJJ. The location is convenient, the facilities are clean, the instructors are knowledgeable, the schedule is robust, and they are upfront about pricing. I could write a glowing review for this gym based on those qualities alone. But what really separates JJC from other gyms is the culture that Josh and Angie have cultivated here. You can expect to train with respectful, welcoming, and thoughtful training partners every time you show up at JJC. This is so important because when you train BJJ, you are putting a lot of trust in your training partners. Who you train with can really impact how you learn and advance. Not to mention training safely with good partners lowers your risk of injury. I would even argue that out of all the factors, who you train with has the biggest impact on your longevity in the sport. That is why I want to really emphasize this quality of JJC. Josh and Angie go out of their way to create a community that is welcoming and encourages learning at all levels. You won't find overly aggressive meatheads with fragile egos here. You will find skillful practitioners who will challenge you to improve your Jiu Jitsu. I cannot recommend this gym enough!
I love training here, the instruction is top-notch and coaches roll with all students on the regular and help with individual problem solving. The atmosphere is welcoming and safe. After a little over a year here, I'm very happy with the community. Classes are a combination of gi and no-gi. Somethings you don't realize what you were missing until you know, like the *spotless * showers, mats and facilities overall. Accessible by driving or by SEPTA. Usually plenty of women in each class too. Highly recommend you come check it out!! :)
If you’re looking for the best Jiu jitsu experience in Philly (in most places, for that matter), look no further! Excellent instruction, great people and atmosphere, and a top-notch facility (equipped with showers and AC, to boot). As someone who has practiced Jiu jitsu for multiple years, My first six months at JJC have seen drastic improvements in the way I think about jiu jitsu and my overall game. Josh, Angie, and all the coaches are great teachers and extremely worthwhile people who really care about their student’s progress both as Jiu jitsu players and as people. They take jiu jitsu seriously, but not in a way where there is pressure to compete or training stops being fun. Moreover, the team really supports each other and does plenty of socializing outside of class. Awesome place to train and make friends!
Best in the city! Both myself and my son have taken classes here. Mine 9 year old son has learned to love BJJ here. At his first school it was a battle to get him to go to one class a week. At JJC he's disappoint if he can't make 3. All the teachers are great. All the students are great. The atmosphere is perfect. It's, light hearted and easy going, while still maintaining a level of discipline and respect required for the mastery of BJJ. The JJC is different and stands out from other schools, in all the best ways.
I’ve been to a handful of bjj places and this is the nicest by far. Very clean, technique oriented, awesome group of people.
I’ve dropped into many jijitsu gyms, The Jijitsu Company rates right up there as one of the coolest experiences I’ve had. Super friendly people! I was traveling light and didn’t have a gi (they let me borrow). Really diverse group of training partners (high level and beginner friendly alike). Young and old, plenty of females athletes. The way Josh and Angie break down the curriculum is awesome. Lots of problem solving, time to work on your own “projects”. I particularly enjoyed that each class has time dedicated to flow wresting (which seems to be lacking in many academies I’ve been to). The location can’t be beat. Olde City Philly is an amazing neighborhood and the gym itself is beautiful (exposed brick, top notch mats, very clean, showers with towel service, plenty of room to hangout and chat or stretch before/after training. And every class I attended I got a killer workout and learned new things. A+ gym and people!
Finding The JJC has been a dream for our family. The way they approach teaching the kids is amazing. They take BJJ skills, mixed in with positivity to foster growth and build self confidence beyond the mat. Our daughter loves the classes and is always smiling. Angie and John are so welcoming and the space is beautiful.
Look, if your goal is to get highly technical and improve as quickly as possible, there is no other place in Philadelphia to train. Forget the "old school" way of learning where you just train with a bunch of good people and get better by accident. There are no classes with instructors teaching random moves you are supposed to integrate into your game. Every class builds each week with focus on a set of actions/reactions/finishes from a given position. This school is about structured problem solving with intensive individual attention by Angie and Josh Vogel. They will force you to play out of uncomfortable situations so you can learn elegant solutions for when you find yourself in those spots. It is impossible not to improve rapidly if you put the time into this process. The mat culture is competitive, friendly, and collaborative. Not to mention the facilities are extremely nice, with showers and towel service that rivals what you might have at your house. Don't just read this review. Come to the school and see the quality for yourself. It literally sells itself.
Josh and Angie Vogel's approach to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is thorough, detail oriented, and systematic, with a curriculum that matches with it's cohesive structure, relevance, and approachability. Aside from their professional duties, the Vogels are amazing people, with a gym culture that reflects that. Inclusivity and warmth are at the forefront of their values, and the people who train there create an environment that is unmatched. It is a wonderful place to learn, grow, and fold clothes with your friends still in them. The facilities are impressive. Two beautiful bathrooms with showers, as well as a changing room with access to a patio for relaxation are included in the amenities, and the mats themselves are top of the line Zebra mats. The main training area has many plants hanging in the large window, adding to the vibe. All in all, between the facilities, curricular content, and training environment, I couldn't recommend Jiu Jitsu Co. more!
Before I decided where to start my BJJ journey, I tried four different gyms in Center City / Old City. Out of these places, the Jiu Jitsu Company had: - beginner-friendly, structured curriculum and classes, making it relatively easy for me to start from nothing; - a new, clean, and beautiful facility; and - owners that are not only excellent BJJ practitioners and instructors but also very much accessible. No other gyms possessed all three properties at once.
So many good things to say about this place. The training environment is really incredible. Josh, Angie, and the other instructors are awesome. You can tell that they put a lot of thought into both the curriculum design and teaching methods. They make difficult concepts easy to wrap your head, arms, or legs around. The instructors and members are also all really friendly and welcoming people. Jiu jitsu can seem complicated and intimidating at first, but everyone here makes it feel easy, safe, and fun. The gym culture is really special and makes every class a pleasure to attend. The facilities are also top notch. The Old City facade might have you thinking it's small, but there's a shocking amount of immaculately clean mat space. And that's just the beginning. Need to get in a couple hundred squats before class? There's a dedicated strength and conditioning area. Feeling gassed after spending all night in bottom side control? There's gummy bears to fuel your ride home. Does your SO scream and run away when you get home and try to hug them? There's two luxurious showers to wash away your cumulative sweat stench after class. TL;DR This is an amazing gym that I'm glad to be a part of.
What a wonderful community. JJC is inclusive, diverse and warm. I am incredibly impressed by their coaches, their member athletes and their facilities. Expect to try fresh homemade bread and gourmet gummy bears after a hard training session!
I went to the Center City Balance jiu jitsu gym from June to December. It wasn’t until I switched to the Jiu Jitsu Company that I realized what I was missing. You can imagine how much I have to like JJC more to give up the 10 minute walk from Balance to my apartment! Many of the teachers at Balance do not provide nearly as much feedback as the teachers at the JJC. I felt so much more excited to go to class and learn because of the detailed and organized curriculum and THE PEOPLE. When I was younger I went to a different BJJ school in NJ. I feel like the JJC is superior because of how attentive the teachers and students are and because it is the nicest and cleanest of the three gyms. Josh and Angie will know your name and actually care about your jiu jitsu journey. I wish a gym like the JJC was around when I was younger and first starting jiu jitsu because I never would have quit!
The Vogel's approach to bjj is unique and structured in such a way that anyone can learn, regardless of skill level or experience. Josh and Angie have created the most welcoming environment I've ever experienced at a gym. They will greet you with a smile and warmth and do everything to make every person comfortable. The environment they have cultivated is present in everyone who trains there. Any day of the week you will find welcoming and encouraging people to train with from brand new white belts all the way up the ranks.
If you’re looking for top quality instruction in a clean, friendly and inclusive environment then look no further! Josh and Angie are at the top of their game and are dedicated to helping you accomplish your training goals whether you’re looking to compete, learn practical self defense, or train jiu jitsu as a lifelong hobby. Contact them for a free trial and you’ll be amazed by the level of attention they provide each and every student.
Josh and Angie are phenomenal coaches with extensive BJJ knowledge, and their capacity to effectively communicate it to their students is laudable. Their teaching styles are methodical and systematic which establishes a foundation for high level instruction. Their facilities are immaculate and rife with amenities including showers/spa services, and even rogue lifting equipment. However, most notable is perhaps the community constituents whom are all amicable, considerate, and a joy to be around. It's always a pleasure to train here, and I highly recommend checking it out!
The Jiu Jitsu Company offers an incredible atmosphere, culture, and curriculum. The Vogel's put a lot of effort into creating a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. I encourage everyone who is considering starting to walk in because you will come back! Finally, you will learn from one of the most technical instructors in the area.
