I would suggest that anyone considering training in martial arts, adult or child (parent), should consider checking this place out. Rio Grande Shoshin Ryu is a top notch martial art training facility with dedicated and sincere teachers. I have been fortunate to know and train with Michael for several years and can say that he is a dedicated teacher who puts his students first. He is also active in furthering his own training by regularly traveling to train with other instructors or bringing them in for local seminars. As a fellow instructor I have witnessed Michael’s growth as both a student and teacher of Shoshin Ryu Martial Arts. Come here with an open mind and you are sure to find yourself feeling welcomed and likely smiling a lot while learning practical self-defense techniques and other exercises to build strength and flexibility in oneself.

Shoshin Ryu is a great art, in that it encompasses striking, throwing, as well as grappling, with much of it based around self-defense. Coming to martial arts later in life, I like that the atmosphere is friendly, welcoming and not competitive. There are no attitudes! So it's great for anyone unsure if they can handle a martial art. The studio space is large, with a large spring loaded floor, which makes for soft landings. I can strongly recommend Rio Grande Shoshin Ryu to anyone interested in learning an effective martial art in.a positive, safe environment.

I’ve been taking my son the past few weeks and he really loves it. He is having fun and learning something each time we go. Thanks to the instructors.

Several months ago, I started coming to classes at Shoshin Ryu. I was apprehensive at first, but pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and supportive the environment was. For example, the higher belt students have been friendly and have helped me to work through some of the frustrations of learning as a white belt. In each Shoshin Ryu class, I always learn more than I think is possible. I am challenged to grow and think and move in ways that build my confidence and skill, ultimately improving my chances of successfully defending myself in a bad situation. I was hesitant about dedicating time and energy to a dojo that was unknown to me. I went to a few other clubs before landing at Shoshin Ryu and I felt completely lost, despite having some martial arts training in my past. However, Shoshin Ryu was/is different and it truly has exceeded all of my expectations. I’ve tried various styles of martial arts and this one seems to blend the best of the best, with an emphasis on practical self-defense skills, so you don’t feel stuck in just one tradition and therefore, you never get bored. Finally, the Sensei is exceptionally talented as a martial artist and as a teacher. He believes in his students and their potential. He is an excellent communicator and he’s down to earth, always sure to give each student individualizad attention. He has a really happy disposition, he’s friendly and warm and he’s pretty funny too.

I have been training here for about a year now and absolutely love it. I have been training a verity of martial arts for about 10 years and think this one is the best. They make it super easy to hop right into to your first class and the sensei will always gladly answer any questions you have. I would highly recommend this place for kids and adults.
