I visited Playfair on Arthur street while on a family holiday in Edinburgh. Can't reccomend them enough. I had a great NoGi session with a verry competent instructor. All participants where verry welcoming. Make sure to send them a message and drop in :)
I was visiting from the US and showed up to train one evening. The gym owner, Sean, greeted me and showed me around. The place is awesome. White, clean mats, plenty of cubby space for storage, and separate changing rooms to get ready. I have been training BJJ for 7 years and the quality of instruction was top notch! There were 25 or so players on the mats and there was plenty of space. Everyone was friendly and the atmosphere was professional. Nialls and the team made sure everyone was taken care of and understood the concepts were understood. I highly recommend this BJJ gym for anyone in town or visitors. It doesn't get any better than this.

Fantastic gym with excellent coaching and a really welcoming atmosphere. The instructors are knowledgeable, the training is high quality, and everyone is friendly and supportive. I’ve learned so much here and recently earned my blue belt. Couldn’t recommend this place more for anyone interested in BJJ.
I trained today through an open mat, beginner Gi class and comp NoGi, and let me tell you how much of a gem this academy is. Firstly there is a vast degree of knowledge between everyone, from white to black. The content is structured well, not too overwhelming, whilst also allowing the members to experiment with their own game. Everyone seems to have infinite gas tanks and if you manage to not get distracted by the beauty of the place, you can actually see the plethora of medals they collected from all around. There's something for everyone, from children classes to beginner friendly ones up to skilled competitor level (which most seem to be). I'm really grateful for having the chance to train here and will definitely be back, and I genuinely recommend everyone to give it a go! I trained at the Leith studio but I'm sure the second one is just as good. Friendly tip, let them know in advance you're dropping in, as it can get quite busy.
What can I say Playfair Jiu Jitsu? Well, after the disappearance of my old gym, I was jiu jitsu homeless for quite a while, knowing that I loved jiu jitsu, jumping between a few different places, but never finding quite the right gym that could give me the kind of training that I wanted, and when I came to Playfair Jiu Jitsu, I realised I’d found a home again. Steven, and the all of the coaches are not extremely knowledgeable about jiu jitsu, but they’re able to impart that information to me, and to others across different skill levels. I’ve also found that Steven and Mariusz have been particularly good at identifying weaknesses both in broader game and the way I train, and have helped massively in correcting those weaknesses. But beyond their quality as coaches, they are friendly and welcoming, and they make the gym a place that you want to come back to. I should add that I only started here after receiving a diagnosis of a life changing health condition, one which often gets in the way of my jiu jitsu, and they have been fantastically accommodating of that. I feel that I get a great variety of training partners, with different skill levels, physical attributes, and styles, and I also feel that the friendly atmosphere created by the coaches extends to my training partners. Space can often be a problem for jiu jitsu clubs, but the Leith studio is wonderfully spacious, in a way that is not often seen with jiu jitsu clubs in this country. I have trained at places with more space than this, but only for drop ins or whilst on holiday. Another thing I want to mention is the availability of classes. Among those who know me, it is no secret that I am a dedicated no gi lover, and at many gyms it can be difficult to find a sufficient number of no gi classes in a week. I have not had this problem at Playfair Jiu Jitsu, and furthermore, there are also plenty of gi classes for those who prefer gi. I highly recommend this gym.
I spent 7 months training here (Lieth Studio - they have 2, FYI) and only have good things to say... The team at Playfair took me from zero experience to being able to successfully compete in my first local comps in no time. Overall Its a very freindly and relaxed environment for all new comers to the sport; of all ages and all abilities for sure. Theres a strongly diverse demographic. Additionally, theres an excellent cohort of competition level men and women, who happily offer support and always around to learn from. The gyms staff are always highly accomodating and very happy to support your personal training progression. I.e keeping it casual or being abmitious. I found this approach created a very good community. The staffing team is really varied which is an absolute strength for this gym. And the new facilities are up and coming which is nice to see the development and ongoing success and reinvestment. Special mentions to: Steven and Mariusz Niall, Derrie, John, Zac and Dan. I had my 8yo son come to Playfair as a drop-in while we were on vacation in Edinburgh. The facility was nice and the parents and instructors were very friendly and patient with my talkative kid. Unfortunately we came at a time when a lot of the other kids were on vacation, so the class was small but my son had a great time and really liked working with the instructor. Definitely a good spot if you're in town!
Posted 2 years agoI have not been going to Playfair for long but love going here. I was very intimidated about joining jiu-jitsu, especially as a female but Playfair has made me feel very welcome. There is an excellent group of men and women who both work and train here. The training is wonderful and the coaches are very patient and informed. I am proud of the gym. Whenever I mention Playfair to other people in the Edinburgh bjj community, they remark on the wonderful reputation for community and training. I cannot recommend it enough.

The oldest one goes and trains there, and the other one cheers up his sister (very keen to train soon though) I feel like home, great bunch of Jiujiteros and they make me improve every time I roll with them on the mat. I enjoy seeing more girls coming to the class too🔥👊🏼#oss
Posted 2 years agoBeen a member for a little over a year and can’t recommend Playfair Jiujitsu enough. Learning from coaches still competing at the top level in the sport has given me the ability to medal at my first couple of white belt comps. You’ll find a warm and friendly atmosphere, both accessible and challenging diverse classes to sharpen your skills in BJJ.
