My 8 year old son has loved jui jitsu but our previous experience was rigid and overwhelming to him. But now finding this place and Professor Phil, my son is truly enjoying learning and being in class. We so appreciate Phil and the way he runs this place. I would highly recommend for your child.
Posted 10 months agoBoth of my kids attend jiu jitsu here, and it’s been such a wonderful experience! Professor Phil has done an incredible job supporting and teaching each of my very different children. He’s helped them learn how to harness their individual strengths—both physically and mentally—while developing real jiu jitsu skills that give them confidence and a sense of protection in life. We’re so grateful for the positive, respectful, and empowering environment he’s created! They have a bunch of fun too!
Posted 10 months agoMy 7-year-old son has been training in Jiu-Jitsu for about three years. He started at a much larger, commercial-style school, which was fine for a while — but the big class sizes made it easy for kids to get overlooked. Instructors rotated often, and it was clear that few really wanted to teach the children’s classes. We did have one great instructor, but when he left, we started looking for something better. That search led us to Ocean Beach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and it’s been a completely different experience. It’s a smaller school where the owner personally teaches the kids’ classes — and he’s fantastic with them. The environment is laid-back, the instruction is top-tier, and the price is very fair. Most importantly, the kids have fun while truly learning the art. My son’s enthusiasm and progress have taken off since joining. Highly recommend.
Posted 10 months agoI have known and trained with Phil since around 2009. He’s been around the Jiu-Jitsu game way longer than that. He brings a well-rounded approach jiu jitsu, incorporating not only his gi and nogi Jiu-Jitsu experience, but his time both competing and coaching Wrestling at the high school level. I love and appreciate the tight knit group of people that make up the team. He’s been a pillar in the OB/Point Loma community for years. I would definitely recommend stopping by and hitting the mats!
Posted 1 year agoMy daughter and I have been members since 2020. Professor Phil knows his stuff. A very welcoming group.
Posted 1 year agoGreat place. I went in there with zero experience, learned a ton, got my blue, then sadly had to move out of town. Professor Phil's has a great no-BS teaching style that prioritises getting the basics drilled in before trying anything fancy which is less likely to be practical in real situations. Lots of people of all different belts there to train with. The place is welcoming to all belts, guys and girls, all ages from teenagers up to, well, however old Lance is. It's been a pleasure to train here.
I stopped in recently while visiting Ocean Beach and had a great time. The school was very welcoming, the class was great, and the rolls were great. I couldn't train as much as I'd liked on vacation, but these guys were super cool and I would recommend any one in the area stop in and check them out.
Great instruction, great people, I couldn't be happier with my experience here.
