I am so grateful for the opportunity to train with Marcelo Pereira this morning. If you read nothing else read this- he is both a world class jiujitsu player and a world class human being.
I had a 20 minute conversation with one of his black belts before everykne else arrived that I think has been with him for 15-20 years. He said Marcelo has the highesy ethics of anyone he has ever seen in this industry, and he has been training since 1997. Its March 2024 today. Quite a testimony.
I am a 53 year old blue belt who began 3.5 years ago and was a college wrestler. I am with my wife and daughter on her soring break; I brought my gi and rashguard in case I’d have a chance to train. What incredible fortune I had to be here todag.
Marcelo was warm and generous with his time, a great teacher and easy to understand. We all talked as people stretched, then taught a technique, drilled it, then rolled with each other.
He taught a great knee shield guard pass with an option to take the back or to go to a mounted armbar, and after drilling it, we began to roll.
It was black belts, purple belts and blue belts, and all the rolls were challenging and fun. I’ve been working on my weakest stuff- my bottom game, and I got my guard passed all day long today by his guys. Marcelo himself rolled with me, if we can call it that. I felt like a cat’s play toy mouse. It was so
Cool to experience his brilliance.
After the rolls, Marcelo was generous to spend some time with me to improve my guard game with some simple additional grips from bottom half guard and an improved knee shield position and a tweak to that foot of my knee shield leg connectjng to his back.
He showed me so easy sweeps that then become available from this improved starting position.
After, a black belt and blue belt were working on the gusrd pass to back take /chair sit to crucifix, and Marcelo showed some amazing, simple to understand, and effective details to finish with a collar choke by capitalizing on the opponent’s movement when he bridges to escape, and then returns after your leg attack on his arm to a much deeper and terminal choke where he now cannot bridge out of it. He showed the importance of initial
Leg position and how to change your legs at the right time.
I then realized this all went on for over 30 minutes after class. Some instructors charge $100 or more per half hour. Marcelo did it because he loves to teach and give of himself- thst was so easy to see.
I paid $100/30 minute private once in another Florida gym. Not to be disrespectful of the other lesson, but for me What I learned here was worth 10x that lesson.
It was clear to me what a gold mine this place is, with a fantastic group of training partners and a leader that cares for his students and is passionate about teaching. He is world class.
If I ever find myself in Naples or Fort Myers I will immediately return to train with him. If I were here, I know I wouldn’t look at any other place to train.
Thank you, Marcelo.
