Mantis Martial Arts is a friendly and professional kickboxing club in Derby. We offer martial arts classes for kids, teens and adults, plus workshops, holiday activities and Ninja parties – all running from The Dojo in Spondon.
My son goes to Mantis and has been for a number of years now. He's just got his green/white belt. He goes twice a week snd loves it. The staff are brilliant, they push him but are supper friendly and supportive too. He's made some great friends there.
My little boy Reggie really loves coming here, he comes mostly on a Tuesday and Saturday morning. The staff and owner are really friendly they really encourage all of the children! It’s a great way to learn discipline and it’s good way to keep fit! They have made Reggie feel really welcome!!! We’re so pleased he joined!!
I joined the Mantis gym recently to improve my overall strength and fitness. It is a nice relaxed gym, with wonderfully helpful staff to get you started. As someone completely new to the gym world, they helped me to understand the equipment and how to safely use it. As woman, I was self-conscious about joining, but it's a nice friendly atmosphere, I don't feel intimidated by other users and I feel confident working out. I would highly recommend Mantis, particularly to women who are thinking of joining a gym but have the same worries I had. The team are lovely, the gym has a nice atmosphere and I always get to use my favourite equipment.
My daughter joined mantis martial arts in January 2023 and was immediately greeted with a warm and friendly welcome. From starting as a complete beginner, she was shown the basics and supported at every stage. She now feels completely part of the family and would spend all her time at the Dojo if I'd let her! She has recently been invited to join the leadership programme and has been learning important new skills and made lots of great friends. There are always different events and activities happening and the staff really do go the extra mile. I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's not just about the kickboxing, you get so much more!
My daughter really finds it fun and she says that it is to her, a place where she is happy.
Both my boys attend Mantis and I have seen their confidence grow over the last 18 months. My eldest has a real knack for it and thoroughly enjoys his sessions! Staff are fantastic, so friendly and happy to see you every time. They have a programme for "young leaders" or Deshi as they are known to help young people develop leadership and teahing skills which I think is fantastic.
They have great experiences and some of them being sleepovers . They also have a tuck shop including lots of snacks , drinks and sweeties . They are all very welcoming and nice . They have lots of experiences such as classes , different activities and different events such as a hyrox event that was for juniors that I went to today and it was really fun but also challenging . I feel encouraged to try my hardest with the stuff that I do at the mantis dojo in Spondon .
Fantastic club. Our daughter really struggled with anxiety and low confidence, but within weeks of joining - she was skipping through the door and ready to go! The club has a really lovely family feel and the Sensei’s couldn’t do more for every child in their care! Highly recommend - not only is it a lovely safe environment for kids to attend, but it really does push them to be strong, confident and comfortable in their own skin. Love them!
My daughter joined Mantis a couple of years ago and her confidence and skills have gone from strength to strength. All the classes are full of fun, support and expertise. I take part in the fitness classes which are all no judgement and very enjoyable. The whole team is absolutely fabulous!!
We’ve been with Mantis Martial Arts for a number of years now and I honestly can’t recommend them highly enough. They have always been incredibly supportive and encouraging, and the progress has been leaps and bounds since joining. Not only have the instructors helped build skills and discipline, but they’ve also given a huge boost in confidence. What really stands out is how much they genuinely care about the children as individuals, not just as students. They’ve been supportive even when there have been challenges outside of martial arts, including when school hasn’t been going so well. That kind of support and understanding really means a lot. It’s a really nice, solid group of people who create a positive, respectful, and encouraging environment for everyone. We’re very grateful to be part of the club and would highly recommend Mantis Martial Arts to anyone.
My daughter has been attending Mantis Martial Arts for almost a year, and it's been a really positive experience. She's naturally quite shy, but the friendly and supportive environment has helped her feel comfortable and more confident with each class. She’s progressed through a few belts already and continues to learn new skills each week. The classes are always engaging—she especially enjoys the fun games like The Floor is Lava—and the mindfulness at the end of each session helps her wind down and reflect. I’d definitely recommend Mantis to any parent looking for a martial arts school that builds confidence, encourages physical activity, and makes learning fun.
Posted 1 year agoFantastic experience at Mantis both my children having been going for nearly a year now. Heather and the team are all very hard working and put together great kickboxing exercises along with fun and varied games to keep the children interested. My children have certainly gained self confidence from going here too.
Posted 1 year agoWe knew we wanted our daughter to start kickboxing when she was old enough. While we were waiting, EVERY time we saw someone ask for recommendations online, the answer was always Mantis, repeated by tons of people... So we obviously didn't even look elsewhere! Our daughter joined when she was 4 and it has been one of the best things we've ever done with her. She used to be really shy and all the Sensei and helpers would be so understanding and patient with her. Fast forward 18 months, we've had to upgrade he membership as she wants to go as often as she can! We have noticed such a HUGE difference in our daughter confidence, thanks to Mantis. She has absolutely loved doing the gradings and will now show any one who will watch, her routines!
Posted 1 year agoMantis is an absolutely fantastic club. Me and my daughter have been members here for about 18 months now and we love it. We train in the family class together, and I do the adult class as well. The ethos of the club is perfect for us and provides a space where we feel both safe and supported to develop our skills, fitness and confidence. The club posters talk about there being no ‘bravado’ at Mantis, and this is absolutely true throughout - it really is baked into the culture of the place.
Posted 1 year agoWe do the ‘kids kickboxing class’ each week. It’s a fantastic club for children to learn martial arts whilst working on their self esteem and focus. The staff are all very knowledgeable in their sport and the young mentors really help my son with getting his moves right! They even have a mindfulness moment at the end of the class! I would highly recommend this club ⭐️
