Hands down the best gym in wny. Fantastic and supporting community wether its your 1st day or 5th year. Extremley knowledgeable teachers who have a drive for wanting students to succeed. I recommend this gym to anyone who needs a new community or even getting into bjj.
Posted 8 months agoI recently dropped in for a class while visiting the area, and I couldn’t be more impressed. The staff and students were professional, courteous, and very welcoming. The facility is top-notch—locker rooms, well-maintained mats, and a great overall vibe. They have a great culture: experienced practitioners with no egos, patience toward new students, and a genuine love for the art. Everyone was humble, respectful, and focused, which made learning feel safe and fun. I’ve been training for 8 months, and I learned more in this one class than I expected. I’ll admit, I was a little intimidated by their photos (they look pretty mean and tough!)—but these same people behind those poses are kind, knowledgeable, and down-to-earth. If I were to ever relocate to Buffalo, Lake Effect Jiu-Jitsu would absolutely be my go-to academy. Highly recommend to anyone looking for top-quality training and a supportive atmosphere.
Posted 1 year agoI'm originally from Buffalo but now live and train out of state. I dropped into Lake Effect when visiting home. The facility itself is awesome and extremely clean and well kept. Instruction is top-notch and Michael and his coaches give individualized attention to all students. The culture is really welcoming and friendly, I felt right at home when I walked in. Lake Effect is officially my new home away from home! Thank you!
Posted 1 year agoI am super impressed with Lake Effect, the gym is always clean and inviting. The instructors are amazing and really put in an effort to ensure the students are getting the instruction they need. The culture is amazing, when you walk in you feel welcome and everyone has respect for each other. I am so glad I found this place it is a ton of fun and I encourage anyone thinking about BJJ to give this place a try I truly cannot say enough good things about it.
Posted 1 year agoLooked up some possible places while in Buffalo for the week for some work related training. Found this place and reached out. Coach Michael responded, welcoming me to drop in and provided some good info. When I got there the environment was very welcoming, from the instructors down to the newest white belt. I never felt like anyone wanted to prove themselves against the "stranger", a vibe I've gotten on occasion when I drop in on classes during my travels. Got some good drilling in to work on muscle memory, and some good positional rolling for practice and to get the heart rate up. Overall great class.
top notch training. Came for a visit and left more educated and supported in where I was in my skills.
As someone with a previous history in various martials, sports and overall fitness, my experience with Lake Effect Martial Arts has been nothing short of transformative. Having achieved high-ranking belts in different forms of marital arts, I can confidently say that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) at Lake Effect is an unparalleled and enriching experience, offering both physical and mental challenges that have helped me focus and redfine my approach to life. One of the most striking aspects of Lake Effect Martial Arts is its inclusivity. Regardless of age or skill level, the discipline embraces all ages, skill levels (even if you have none), backrounds (ethnic, social or professional), creating an environment that fosters growth and development. As someone who joined later in life, I found a welcoming community that accommodates beginners and advanced practitioners alike. The diversity of students creates a supportive atmosphere that encourages everyone to push their limits and strive for improvement. The challenges posed by BJJ are genuine and multifaceted, developing and demanding both physical prowess and mental acuity. Yet, it's precisely these challenges that have helped me discover a newfound purpose and focus, especially now that my children are at the age where they are on their own. BJJ at Lake Effect has become more than just a physical activity; it has become a source of clarity and peace of mind in this new chapter of my life. One of the distinguishing factors of Lake Effect Martial Arts is the exceptional quality of its instructors. Deeply knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating to practitioners of all levels and ages, they play a pivotal role in creating a welcoming, positive and enriching learning environment. Their guidance has not only improved my BJJ skills but has also extended to personal and professional development, making a tangible impact on various facets of my life. In the two years since I joined Lake Effect, I have not only gained physical strength, conditioning and agility but have also experienced emotional and mental benefits that extend beyond the mats. The sense of community fostered by the academy is akin to a family, where members challenge and support one another, both on and off the mats. This sense of camaraderie has become an integral part of my life, creating lasting connections with people who share a passion for personal growth in their heart, mind and soul In conclusion, Lake Effect Martial Arts has been a beacon of positive change in my life. It offers a unique blend of physical and mental challenges, a welcoming community, and expert instruction that extends beyond the realm of BJJ. For anyone seeking a transformative journey that goes beyond traditional fitness routines, Lake Effect Martial Arts stands out as a place where one can discover purpose, focus, and a supportive community that enriches both personal and professional aspects of life. I am profoundly grateful for the impact it has had on my journey, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone ready to embark on a holistic martial arts experience.
I was visiting from out of town and I dropped in for mid-day class. The instruction was good and the other students were friendly and skilled. I will definitely stop in again next time I am in town.
Great culture, diverse group of experienced coaches and great culture/schedule. Recommend
Dropped in for a class while in town visiting family. Great rolls, instruction, and atmosphere. Very nice facility, too. I'll definitely visit again next time I'm in the area.
Hey y'all (everyone reading this lol) Andre Willis here just a local jiu jitsu practicioner that trains out of WNY MMA & Fitness today I had the honor of attending an open mat pieced together by professor Michael Kalitus the Vibes were in, the Grapplers that came out & represented from their respective Academies put on a professional Showing also a funny story in 2018 the 1st time I rolled with Professor Kalitus it was like jumping toward the final boss in a brand new video game 🤣 (I got bewildered, thwomped, tossed, swept & subbed so many times but that experience made me enjoy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu even more lol) I will remain to have the utmost respect for him & the Professionalism/respect He showed me as a super spazzy white belt & just as a person 🤙🏾
Super welcoming gym for an out of town visitor. Great atmosphere, people, and jiu jitsu.
Can't say enough good things about this place. Stopped by during a work trip to Buffalo and got extremely valuable mat time drilling and rolling. Even had 1on1 with multiple black belts which I wasnt expecting as a quick visitor. The professor and students were very welcoming and treated me like family from the moment I walked in. If you are in the area, I highly recommend this place. Looking forward to coming back in the future.
Traveled into Buffalo for work. I was recommended to check out Lake Effect Martial Arts by a friend. I travel frequently and always bring a gi in hopes of finding a gym to train at while in town. This is by far the most welcoming gym I've been too. Both by the Instructors and the students. I took part in both the Defense class and the All levels gi class. Good techniques, Good Instruction, amazing locker room setup and ample mat space. The Professors took time with each student on specifics to the drills we were running. Great experience and will be going back the next time I travel to Buffalo. Thank you to Michael and Doug for the specific technique instruction.
The culture at Lake Effect Martial Arts is one of inclusivity and positivity. The Instructors are all well versed in their art and the students help each other reach their full potential. The higher belt students are great at mentoring the lower belt students. This is a wonderful experience for children and adults alike. As an unathletic man in my mid 30's, my time at Lake Effect Martial Arts has put me in the best shape of my life and taught me its never to late to start something new and take better care of yourself. I cannot recommend enough.
Everyone at LEMA has been very welcoming and it is a great place to learn from knowledgeable coaches. With two locations they have a lot of training options for your schedule. I started jiu jitsu there last year and at 43 years old it's gotten me in the best shape of my life.
I joined LEMA in early 2023 as an “older” student with zero combat sport experience. The coaching staff is welcoming, knowledgeable, and extremely patient. Experienced students are also welcoming and willing to offer little tips and tricks that helped them along on their journey. The class schedule is very accommodating, allowing me to train at least 3-4 days a week while working a 9-5, and raising 4 kids with my wife. I would recommend this gym to anyone looking for a new challenge!
Everyone was incredibly friendly! The facility is nice and clean. I felt empowered to try to push myself. It is a great experience!
Our kids went here for a little over a year. I can’t say enough good things about the kids program and instructors, especially Pete. Worth every penny and then some.
Very welcoming environment with a vast amount of knowledge the coaches and upper belts are willing to share. Facilities are clean and tidy.
I moved to Buffalo, NY, back in September 2021 and started practicing bjj at Lake Effect Martial Arts. I came in as a black belt from another school and was not only immediately welcomed with open arms but part of the family atmosphere that is a staple when training here. The owner and coaches provide realistic training to match your needs but also push you to achieve more if that is what you need/want. Hands down the best place to train in Western New York!!!
Great instructions, realistic expectations of the kids.
This is a great place to learn martial arts and it's a really good environment I love the boxing aspect there. The owner and coaches are super nice . The only downside iv noticed sense i started going is that if your not a superstar you'll be passed to side and almost forgotten from my experience. Place is great might need a couple more coaches . I would highly recommend the place for yourself and your kids
The Professors have been amazing in teaching my daughter. They not only physically train but also mentally. Offering life advice as they enter the real world. Boxing coach Mike is great. The owner, Professor Michael is very involved and runs a clean friendly environment. You feel So welcome as you step through the doors. Highly recommend.
I’m new to BJJ, 41, and not in the best of shape. I was nervous getting going but am very happy I did here at LEMA. So far, a couple classes in and the Professors I’ve had the pleasure of working with are knowledgeable, helpful, and inclusive. At my initial meeting with Professor Michael he said there was a great bunch of people here and he was right. Every student I’ve met has already made me feel welcome at the school. I look forward to updating this review after some more time on the mats.
I had my first class with Lake Effect Martial Arts last night leaving sore and excited to continue training. The atmosphere is welcoming and hardworking gathering a group of likeminded people looking to push beyond their perceived physical and mental boundaries which is totally what I’m into. Coaches Dave and Jordan were informative, excited and fun in their teaching. Skillful athletes yet humble and giving in their experience to help you become the best you yourself with push yourself to be. Great range from no stripe white to blue, purple, brown and even black in BJJ. Thankful for this dojo and WNY is blessed to have LEMA in their hometown. Thank you again Coach Michael and the entire LEMA community, blessings to your dojo and in any comps you participate in.
My son attends classes here and he loves it. What a difference it makes in his week. I can say as an observer that the staff/owner care about what they are doing at Lake Effect. Overall it is an upbeat and positive environment where the kids learn while having fun but at the same time get challenged weekly.
I did a lot of home work and research before visiting any of the BJJ gyms in the Buffalo area and decided to reach out to Lake Effect a few months back. Professor Michael did a great job communicating with me, scheduled a visit to the gym, and spent the appropriate time answering any questions that I had. On day one, I was warmly greeted by the other students - regardless rank or age. All were welcoming and very helpful as I made my way to the mat. The workouts were second to none. I found that even though I had a solid workout, I was eager to get back as soon as my schedule would allow. The other coaches and higher belts were all very helpful and would point out ways to make the experience better. Solid school with a great culture.
Whether your a brand new, beginner or advanced this is the place to train. From white to black belts theres huge amount of respect given. Training is serious yet fun. Come and start your bjj path and learn with all of us!! Ive been there for over 90 days and enjoy every moment spent there!!
Great Professor, Great Students, Great Environment and Facilities. Reasonably Priced As Well.
Expert instructors, very clean, extremely welcoming. Hands down, best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym in the area. Highly recommended for both adults and kids. Check out their schedule, so many class times available! They also have a boxing class!
I participated and competed in various martial arts in my life. Everything from Tae Kwon Do, Kempo, and Karate in my younger years and even trained in Muay Thai for two years in my late 20s. I was always a heavier set build and I thought I have experienced what I could out of martial arts regarding weight loss while pushing my body and confidence to the limits. That is, until, I took my first class of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Lake Effect Martial Arts (LEMA). When I joined the LEMA family, I was the heaviest I been in my life and pushing an obese weight of 290lbs at the height of 6’0. I was extremely intimidated and embarrassed to start training in a martial art once again knowing how heavy I was, let alone a martial art I have absolutely no familiarity! However, due to the amazing culture and leadership of the academy, I felt right as if I was training on the mats there for months. Everyone is extremely helpful, friendly and always willing to assist (Professors and students); does not matter if your tall, short, heavy, skinny, everyone is training together on their jiu-jitsu journey. You’re not alone at LEMA or just “another number” at a gym, and the inviting family-like culture demonstrates the second-to-none leadership from the professors. In only 5 ½ months I have shed 50lbs and counting! Along with the weight loss, I am the most flexible and mobile I have been in my life and this is including my earlier martial arts years. Jiu-Jitsu is very challenging and will push your mind and body to the limits, but, you’re not on this journey alone. Regardless of what someone’s goals are: lose weight, get in better shape, compete or learn self-defense with arguably the most efficient martial arts in the world, there is no other place to train other than Lake Effect. I am grateful for taking the leap into the world of Jiu-Jitsu and looking forward to conquering more goals with the Lake Effect team!
I was in town for work and Michael welcomed me to join any session that worked for my 42 year old white belt self which happened to be a 6:30am intro session on a cold November morning. Gym was very clean, spacious and well appointed with timers, cubbies, seating and changing space. I love their appreciation for foot hygiene! Great location with lots of windows and a big parking lot--super easy to find and convenient to Buffalo. Greg was the instructor for this session and he spent a lot of time with a thorough warm-up and individualized attention during reps. He even got involved in the gauntlet-style positional grappling which I seldom see black belts risk their noses and lips with us white belts! I hope to come back in the future... thanks again for the hospitality!
I joined LEMA exactly one year ago and it has been hands down one of the best decisions I've made in my adult life. Even though Bjj is not easy on the body, I can say with confidence two things have improved since my first day. My physical health has improved significantly. I've lost close to 30 lbs and my energy levels are the highest they have ever been. I also see an immense improvement in my mental health as I feel more balanced, and relaxed the further I train. This martial art humbles you and shapes you into a better version of yourself, inside and outside. Instructors are so incredibly dedicated to your progress and are very knowledgeable. The facilities are in optimal shape and kept to the highest of standards. Classes are super fun and very flexible to fit anyone's schedule. The overall feel when you walk into LEMA is nothing different than spending time with your friends and family. I would highly recommend to at least try one class and take it from there. It's never too late to invest in yourself.
From the moment we walked in, we felt nothing but welcomed and could tell these instructors know what they're doing. Very helpful, kind, and knowledgeable.
Dropped in for a No-Gi class while in Buffalo where I’ll be traveling now for work. Facility, staff, and instructors were great. They made me feel welcomed and got some good rounds in. Look forward to coming back next time I’m in town.
Joining this gym was like joining a family. Very welcoming! Professors and coaches are true professional. Can't wait to continue my journey with this team.
Last year i decided that it was time to take the plunge in to learning BJJ. After doing trials at a couple of other schools I also did one here at Lake Effect. Before even walking in to my first class, communication with the owner and head instructor Mike Katilus was easy, with fast responses that reflected a genuine desire to not recruit just another student, but build a confident person, and genuinely get to know me a bit and make me feel welcome. This same attitude was shown with the coaches and students I met. Coach Dave and Joao were extremely friendly and welcoming, and I am somebody that would be considered pretty anti-social. They always had time to answer questions, break something down, and do it in a way that made me comfortable to ask more questions if needed. One year later and I see all of the coaches, and the students reflecting those same virtues. Making people feel they are actually a part of the team. As for the quality of instruction and technique, you get numerous different approaches from three different black belts, and some brown belts as well. The instruction of these people has lead many people to tournament success on local, national, and international levels. But if competing is not your thing, you will still feel just as welcome as there are plenty of people there for other reasons such as fitness, or just to learn a martial art for self-defense or personal challenge. The facility is large and holds two rooms with mats, a strength training area, cleans bathrooms and showers, and even a sauna for the perfect after workout relaxer. The mats are swept and mopped after EVERY class, and the academy takes pride in its cleanliness. Finally, one can also supplement their training with other programs such as yoga, strength training, and a movnat class. One year later and I have no regrets at all for making that decision to visit LEMA. I did the full week trial but I knew on the first day I went that I had found what would be my home away from home. To finalize: I drive an hour each way just to train here when there are other academies that are closer. Once you visit, you will understand why.
Great place to train. Everybody is very friendly and the coaches are super knowledgeable! This gym is great for people who never trained before to those with years of experience. Lake Effect Martial Art is the place to train whether you want to compete at the highest level or just get in shape! I would highly recommend this gym for anyone looking to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Buffalo area.
Thank you for letting me train with you last week. Had a great time rolling with everyone. Clean facility with expert instruction. Highly recommend this place.
Lake Effect is a club that truly cares about the development of their students. Great coaching from IBJJF certified instructors who are well versed in high level competition which is extremely hard to find these days. A complete BJJ academy. Highly recommended for new students looking to have fun, get in shape and learn or experienced students looking to compete at a high level. Great for all ages.
Joining Lake Effect Martial Arts has allowed me to improve both my mental and physical health in a welcoming, fun and safe environment. I have made many friends while relieving stress and losing over 40 pounds. The instruction is top-notch and accessible for students of all ages and levels. I recommend anybody interested to at least come in and try a class.
Lake Effect Martial Arts is the best place in WNY if you are interested in: learning or training jiu jitsu, learning self-defense techniques, trying to get your kid into a positive hobby/sport (or "bully-proofing"), or if you're looking to improve your MMA game strategies. This state of the art gym is a bright, clean facility unlike others in the area. The coaches (Michael, David, Joao, Jarod, and Pedro) have trained and competed jiu jitsu all over the world. They take the gentle art seriously, they are each very dedicated to learning and improving their skills, and teaching the most cutting edge techniques to their students. These guys are patient, articulate, professional and encouraging as coaches - they want to help people to be their best on and off the mats. Check them out!
Great academy with the best training partners and coaches in WNY. Missing a class actually makes me feel bad because the enviroment is so positive and encougraging. If you want to get good at Jiu Jitsu and hang out with people that have the same goals, come join the party...get choked, choke some poeple and learn.
Amazing people my son participates in the kids class. Coaches are very patient, and encouraging. They have built up my sons confidence greatly he's always excited about his next class
makes me sweat excessively and submits me more than I enjoy. As Jiu Jitsu Aficionado I dont like to lose.Honestly great facilty, great instructors who take pride in the academy and the instructions of its students hobbyists or competitors alike.
Update: I’m a black belt and was trying to leave. I wrote the owner a letter explaining I’d be ending my membership. I wanted to broaden my training and take a hiatus but still drop back in for open mats. Instead of acting like a mature business owner, the owner got physical and escorted me out. They’re kind people until you don’t give them money. But there’s more: To the comment: “Thank you for sharing your concerns J, and despite the inaccuracies, your going out of the way shows we still mean something to you.” That is incorrect. The reason I’m going out of my way is to warn people to steer clear of your twisted academy. One star review because this school is misogynistic and anti LGBTQ. Two of your instructors have a background of domestic violence, one of which you let run the kids BJJ program. To leave the school you must turn in a letter stating so. I handed my letter to leave the school to the owner, who reacted in a hot headed way. Meaning, this is when my jacket was grabbed and I was thrown out. This is after 5 years at the school. The issues at this academy are deflected away from the owner labeled as somebody else’s fault. He likes to label others issues with him as “victim mentality” and not his prerogative. He is immature, manipulative, and acts like he cares until you stop giving him money.
Be aware of this schemer . I found this place by google reviews, I signed up through online for a free week trial .I made an appointment for a 1 on 1 introduction that was very brief and rushed , they gave me a tour of the run down place and just wanted to hurry up and get me to sign up . I ended up in the office with 2 guys hawking me down to sign up ,so I did. I was told I will only be billed for the remainder days of November prorated , so about $4.50 a day for 6 days. I should have only been billed $26 for November, than regular monthly for December. Surprise surprise on my bank statement they charged me for a full month for November plus the pro rated days ! I contacted the owner and he was no help and could care less .He told me that I should have signed up online instead of in person , I told him that contradicts everything, skip free trial and who would sign up before visiting . He tells me he noticed he hasn't seen me since my free trial day. I agreed and expected him to refund me the $130 he took without my permission and hoping he would refund me the $156 since I never had the time to make it back since my free trial day. I don't blame him for that I signed a piece of paper saying I would tell them 5 days before billing that I want to cancel. Hopefully if they do this to enough prospects they can update their facility. Don't forget to support small local businesses.
