I went to a 2 hour womens self defense class on 10/20/24 and I absolutely loved it! The 2 instructors did a fabulous job at giving clear and simple direction on techniques to use if ever facing harm. They were very patient and spent time with each one of us. For years I've wanted to take a class in self-defense. Now thanks to this class, I feel better prepared to defend myself if necessary. I think every woman should take a class in self-defense and I highly recommend going to Spar!

I am so grateful to have heard the advertisement for SPAR on WDCX (99.5). Instantly I was interested to hear more! I called, and Bills daughter answered the phone. The receptionist is your first impression of a business and wow did she do a phenomenal job! She was incredibly kind and patient, answering my every question. The main one being, what is the difference between SPAR, karate, taekwondo, etc. Her response is what totally sold me! She explained how many parents would call asking if SPAR could help their children, that they are black belts and have spent endless hours and dollars and their children still couldn’t defend themselves. She explained that this is because a lot of other self-defense sports are based off of routine and rhythm. At SPAR they practice real life scenarios, where your children have to discern when they can de-escalate a situation, when they should walk away and when they have to defend themselves. I absolutely love this!!! Not only does SPAR teach your child self-defense, they are giving them so many other important life skills, including discernment, respect, and discipline. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for my four year-old son! Oh, might I add that my sons Jiu Jitsu instructor Eduardo Barboza is a three time World Champion Black Belt with 15 years of Jiu Jitsu experience, so yeah that’s a kinda cool! SPAR offers a in person consultation so that you can see the facility, sit down and see all the classes that are offered for you and your family, as well as figure out which membership works for your budget. My consult was held by Bill, the owner. My experience with Bill was unlike any other experience that I’ve had with a business owner before. Bill is not driven by the money, he truly cares about meeting your child where they’re at and seeing as SPAR is a good fit for them, and you! He is incredibly kind, and honest and genuinely cares about you and your well-being on a personal level. Bill loves everyone and everyone loves Bill! My entire experience has felt very orchestrated, and I am so grateful and hopeful for this season of my son and I’s life! Thank you SPAR and thank you, Bill!!

The instructors filled the 8 classes with great advice on how to avoid dangerous situations as well as how to handle common situations in this crazy world we live in. They shared their experiences and proved to me that this was a great class for us! They showed us that we are not helpless and how to harness our bodies and minds in a bad situation. We may take it annually to keep our skills.

I joined Spar last month as a way to force myself into feeling better after a year long battle with lung issues caused by COVID. I sat with the owner Bill after speaking to his daughter about joining. I wanted to make sure that this was a wise decision for someone like me, who was not in the greatest of shape. He and I sat for a good while going over the classes and he made me feel like I was more than welcome. I signed up to every class they have and although I struggled to keep the schedule ( due to my lungs and heart rebelling ) they assured me that I didn’t have to hit the ground running, and that I could ease into it. The instructors are friendly and work with people of all different ages, backgrounds and fitness levels. They don’t make you feel pressured or make fun of you if you can’t catch up with the class right away. I don’t know why I thought they would do this lol But they didn’t :) When I go on a hiatus due to my health they text and check up on me to make sure I’m okay and see if I need anything. I feel like family here. This place is something out of the ordinary. You will NEVER receive the level of care or support that the staff gives each and every student here at any other gym. If you’re on the fence about signing up, don’t be. Please don’t hesitate to take control of your health and safety by joining Spar self-defense. Cleanliness? It is impeccably clean in this place. They sanitize everything before and after every class. The bathrooms are sparkling, the locker rooms are vividly designed and very clean and everyone is eager to help keep it that way! Practical self-defense? Yes! Everything you learn, you get to demonstrate right away. Not only can you “spar” with a partner that will actively test your skills, but they have actual sets that are designed to look like everyday places that you’d visit when danger strikes. Like a bar, ATM machine, car… they even do field drills. For women? Yes! For everyone! There are classes for people of all ages and abilities. Coach Jenn will make sure you’ve got what it takes to confidently defend yourself against an intruder of any size when the time calls for it. Believe me you’ll be more than confident by the end of her class or really, at the end of any of the classes given here. Don’t have an outfit for class? They sell everything you need to get started in the store located right at the entrance! Worried about parking? There are plenty of spaces at this facility! They are located in the “baddass” complex, next to the Warrior factory and behind Jada Blitz, so plenty of parking here! Class schedules? They have multiple times for classes throughout the morning, afternoon and evening, so every schedule can be accommodated. I don’t want to give too much away here, I’d rather your excitement build up and you come on in for yourself! See you there!

I've been a member for around 9 months this past year and it has been a wonderful experience. You don't even have to think about staying in shape if you go a couple times a week, they work you hard and you learn valuable life skills. Sean's Muay Thai class is where I find myself almost 3-4 times a week. You have to admire Sean's work ethic as his classes run 6 days a week and he really switches things up each time to always keep you striking, blocking and grappling (as well as mini Muay Thai history lessons from time to time). To top it off we end each class with a great ab workout. SPAR is so welcoming by every instructor and student.

Spar offers numerous different classes in different martial arts. All the coaches and professors are patient and personable. Sean’s Muay Thai program is amazing and will improve your striking exponentially. Nick’s Krav program will have you ready to defend yourself in the streets. Finally, you have an opportunity to study BJJ with professor Eduardo Barboza… an actual world champion. I wouldn’t train anywhere else in WNY.

I've been a member for a few months now and easy to say that from the top down (management/coaches/fellow students) everyone is welcoming and helpful. No need to be nervous as all are in good spirits here. I participate in Krav, BJJ, and Muay Thai and each class offers a good workout while teaching important skills, so classes are interesting and fun. Krav allows for real life scenarios, BJJ helps with mobility/flexibility, and Muay Thai allows for lots of striking, all in a safe environment. Worth checking out if interested, doesn't hurt to view a class. Lots of options for early morning/day/afternoon/evening classes 6 days a week, easy to work around your schedule for any age.

My son's have been taking self defense classes here for two years and it has truly helped their confidence and self defense skills. The coaches are firm but fun. I love to watch the classes. I myself took the Women's self defense class. It was truly empowering and fun. The coaches are definitely informative, easy to talk to. Something I noticed after the course was that I walked with my head a little higher. Currently, I am taking Krash Krav. Coach in this class is very motivating. I love the skills I am learning to defend myself in different situations. Once, my youngest is a little older, I'll be trying Boxing and Kickboxing on a regulay basis. Overall, being here for two years. I have to say, the staff has become like family. Learning to defend ourselves is such a wonderful thing. It's a workout with a purpose. I enjoy coming. Definitely, give SPAR a try.

I started the women's self-defense course with a friend in September. We both LOVE the training and the basics of avoiding situations as well as the variety of options you can use to defend yourself. In addition to learning different defenses, you get to challenge your learning in reality scenarios that are right there in the facility! I'd like to emphasize the WIDE variety of women in the class and the efforts the instructors make to ensure we are comfortable with what we are doing and guiding us through proper techniques. I plan on another 8 week course of the women's defense and will likely start one of the belt courses after that. Come by and observe one of the women's courses! That's what we did and immediately signed up!

I absolutely love Spar, I've been to other gyms and this is by far the best. The facilities are very clean, the staff knows who you are, the classes are small so you really get the attention you need, and the gym has a great atmosphere. It can be hard to find gyms that are truly welcoming to women, but this gym is very comfortable and full of supportive and welcoming people both staff and clientele included. The prices of membership can be a bit intimidating to some people for a hobby, but the price is really worth it. I even signed my nieces up (ages 7 & 8) they love the kids programs and my coworkers love the women's self defense course. If any part of you wants to try Spar, you should!

I was nervous walking in because I thought it was going to be a big boys club but it's definitely welcoming of all people. The class is fun especially if you have a partner who can challenge you. We do a lot of practicing with pads so be prepared to use some muscle!

I was interested in self defense classes. I went to SPAR to look around. I talked with Bill. Bill showed me around and explained the classes that are offered. The school is very clean and has a juice bar. There was no pressure to sign up for any classes. Bill wanted to know what I wanted and he suggested some classes that I could take. I decided to sign up & I ‘m glad I did. Everyone is very friendly in the class and the instructors are awesome! I am taking the women’s self defense course. The instructors are women and they show you real live situations. I’m enjoying the classes I’m involved in and would highly recommend this business for any self defense training.

Spar has been like family to me since I walked in the doors. My friend Matt brought me to try it out & I haven't left since. It's helped me stay disciplined after being in the Army. It’s helped me open up and make new friends and really challenge myself to grow as a person. The instructors really care about their students and work with them to reach their goals. I train there 6 day a week & I can’t say enough good things about the Jiu jitsu program and the Krav Maga belt program. I spend more time at Spar than I do my own home. I’m happy to call it a second home for me 👊 💪

I recently started going to SPAR in the fall of 2017 to continue my hunger for combat sports. I as a college student on a tight budget and time schedule SPAR was a great overall pick to start BJJ and Boxing. Their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class that is part of the GFT is taught by a black belt. Matt is amazing and I can't wait to start competing. Brandon the boxing coach is amazing to work with and to learn from. Once I have a car (as a currently bike) I will join the Krav Maga or MMA classes as this high quality gym has so much to offer.

I love Spar Self Defense. Every time I'm visiting Buffalo, I make it a point to stop in and train. The Krav Maga classes are exciting and engaging, I've always worked up a sweat whenever I take classes. On Wednesday, 11/23/16, I took the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class and absolutely loved it. The Black Belt instructor was impressive and I loved learning new techniques from him. The gym atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff are all very friendly. Everything is very clean and the gym is wonderfully decorated. I would recommend Spar self defense to anyone looking to start their journey into martial arts and veteran martial artists looking for a new gym experience.

There is a class for any individual of any skill set- a complete novice to an experienced pro, someone looking for some defense skills or a good workout. My favorite thing about SPAR is how welcoming and encouraging they are! There is no feeling of being judged for your physique, skills, or abilities- they have a way of making you feel completely comfortable. No one ever tells you that you can't do something, but encourages you to try and just give it your best effort. If you have a question, whether about a technique or other issue you're having, the instructors are always willing to take the time to listen and help you out. I love SPAR!

I just finished my first week here and so far it has been Amazing. Everyone there from the instructors to your classmates are super friendly and willing to talk it out and help you . One of the best choices I've made in a very long time. If you want to work out like you never have before , this is it. 5/5

Spar is 5 stars all around!!! The facility is state of the art, clean, and beautifully/ methodically designed! The owners and instructors are all very positive, knowledgeable, friendly, and they truly care about all of the students. The students are all wonderful too! There are no ego's at Spar! I have been in Martial arts for many years, there is no place in WNY that compares to Spar in any way! They offer a variety of classes to meet a variety of needs. Come in and check it out for yourself, I guarantee you will be impressed!

SPAR is by far the best facility in the area for all levels of physical fitness. I joined up at the beginning of the year and it has been worth every penny. Whether you are looking for a way to defend yourself in real world scenarios or just looking to get in better shape, this is the place to be. All of the instructors are friendly and helpful. They are very experienced and are great at helping you along. You never get that "new person" feeling like you don't belong. All of the students are also very helpful and many stay after classes to answer questions or go over techniques. This place is where to go if you want to be in shape but feel out of place at traditional gyms, hate feeling out of place, or get bored with the same routine. The place itself couldn't be any better. It's always clean and really a second home to many students. The best shape of your life starts at SPAR.

Great place! You are going to love this place and the coaches who are very experienced and have different backgrounds, cool and fun to work with. The classes are worth of every penny and very affordable. The people there are awesome just like me (; haha. . If you haven't taken any self defense, this is the best place to start, and it's very effective hands down 👍 👍.

After doing bjj / Sambo for many years, krav maga is a great art to add to your Arsenal. Many of krav maga moves can easily transition into bjj moves. If you're bored with choking guys out, (like I was)you should come here and learn a more practical(real world ) martial art.

If you are looking for a fun and challenging workout experience or if you are serious about getting trained in the real world skills of Krav Maga - you need to visit Spar and see for yourself how amazing it is to train here. I guarantee that once you see the professional facility - top of the line equipment and training rooms, stocked pro-shop, fresh shake bar, one-of-a-kind reality training room and their highly qualified instructors - you will know that this is the place to be! All of these amenities are available for an amazing price - there are different packages to choose from - so my advice is to check them out and see for yourself what an amazing value they offer - especially compared to other schools in the area. The instructors, staff and other students make me feel like I'm part of a community and that's way more than I ever expected - I'm so glad I found this place!!

SPAR!!!!!!!! This school is amazing. No experience required to join. The instructors are both personable and knowledgeable. They transition those with no experience and those with years of experience into some of the most talented and disciplined fighters. The school itself is always clean and has top of the line equipment. The shake bar offers a perfect after workout recovery drink. The classes vary which makes it more enjoyable for those with/without experience. Depending on what you want, you can take the cardio class or the self defense, or both. Nice blend for all fitness levels. This school blows other facilities out of the water!!!! Go Team Spar :)

SPAR is an all around amazing place. The instructors are amazing motivators and teachers. The facility is high end with amazing training rooms, equipment, and even a pro shop. The best thing about coming to SPAR is being felt welcome and being on a first name basis with everybody there. SPAR will not only make you physically tough but mentally as well. I would highly recommend SPAR to anybody who has any interest in learning Krav Maga or self defense.

SPAR is hands down the best place to train Krav Maga in the Buffalo area. They have the cleanest, most state of the art facility I have trained in. All of the instructors bring real world experience to the table. When they are teaching you a new technique or giving you pointers they are often speaking from real life situations they have faced. If you are interested in training in an easy to learn, practical martial art/fighting system give SPAR a try; you won't regret it!

SPAR is the best Krav Maga school in Western NY. They teach real Krav Maga, not a watered down version. To exceed at SPAR Krav Maga you have to work hard and earn it, no rank is simply given to you for just attending classes at SPAR. Krav Maga gives me the confidence to defend myself & my loved ones on the street and while at work. I Love it and will keep training there. The staff at SPAR are so friendly and will continue to help me attain my goals.
