Kenukan Budokai Mixed Martial Arts
I have been involved with Martial Arts for over fifty years with a background in competitive Judo and Karate, and now retired after being in law enforcement and an attorney. With this background I have interacted with many styles, attended seminars, multiple academy's and gained real world experience. I can say without a doubt that Sensi Travis Boggs is the best Martial Arts instructor, I have trained with. He not only has the technical knowledge but he has the ability to teach others. So if you are wanting to get a loved one, child or others professional training for sport or self defense, or you are a law enforcement officer wanting additional training for yourself or your department this is the person you need. His training can enrich and possibly save your life. Add photos Post 무
Posted 1 year agoI started training with this group in 1975 down off Johnson drive and Nall. I can’t say enough about Travis and what he provides. Best instructor I have ever been around and he’s the real deal! No paper tigers. There are money mills all over town passing out black belts like candy. Dangerous practice on multiple levels. If your interested in being trained the right way I HIGHLY recommend you go see Travis!!
Posted 1 year agoKenukan is a great place for kids and adults to learn self-defense techniques, and grow their skills in martial arts. It's nice to be able to practice striking, throwing and grappling techniques in one place. My son and I have been members since February 2022, and plan on attending for many years to come.
Posted 1 year agoKenukan Academy is a national icon in the martial arts (karate-kickboxing-judo-jujitsu-self defense and combat arts). I have been continuously active in martial arts for 40 years and own my own dojo. When I need top notch training to further my own learning there are only a handful of places in the United States I trust. Kenukan is one of those places! Brent L. Anderson
Posted 1 year agoI attended a kickboxing/ju-jitsu//judo/self-defense seminar with Travis and was really impressed with his skill and ability to teach. I also enjoyed visiting with him and getting to know him a bit. I've been grappling and kickboxing for 21 years and he is a stand out instructor.
Posted 1 year agoKenukan dojo is nothing short of phenomenal. Sensei Travis, Mr. Kinser, and all of the fellow students are focused on learning together and uplifting one another. All of the teachings are practical and you feel your confidence increase every time. Whether it's the Jiu-jitsu, Judo, Kickboxing, Self-Defense, or MMA, all of them are taught with precision. Thank you for all that you have all taught me, whether Sensei, Mr. Kinser, or my fellow dojomates.
Oldest Martial Arts school in Johnson County for a reason. Great instruction and great people. As good as any I've seen in my 50 plus years of training.
The classes I’ve taken here have been great! The instruction is very clear and the teachers have such patience when you are having difficulty understanding something. I’m always excited to show up to whichever class I am attending that evening
Superb martial arts and self-defense techniques taught at Kenukan by Sensei Travis Boggs. His teacher was legendary Jim Harrison. This is a very effective style. Sensei Boggs is a phenomenal ju-jitsu and kick-boxing instructor.
I have been taking the self-defense classes at Kenukan for about 6 months now and it has been an amazing experience. Travis Boggs’ teachings are very easy to follow along with and the environment makes learning really enjoyable!
My boyfriend, chris goes almost daily and i can tell when he does! Its a great place to learn and get out energy. Very attentive in teaching students , gives out so much information and ensures their students understand. I definitely will be looking into going soon as well
Great experience for everyone involved! Been here for over 9 years and the teaching have always been amazing!
My wife has been a member of this dojo for over 20 years. Now, both of our kids train there as well. Beyond top notch training, this school is built around community and family values. Kids are taught more than just "how to kick." They are taught real self defense skills and the discipline that needs to go with them. This is not a school that just hands out black belts for a fee. This is a serious dojo that treats training, learning, and students with respect. Students advance in belts when they are actually ready and skilled, not based on a calendar dates or payment plans.
I trained at Kenukan for the first time when I was 14 for about a year and came back a few months ago at 20 years old. Throughout that time I always wanted to come back and I was finally able too. I was able to handle and protect myself in any situation the last 5 years just from what I learned when I was younger. It allows you to walk around with confidence and not be afraid of anyone. I’m a huge UFC fan and very passionate about MMA and this place is the real deal if you’re into that. Everyone at Kenukan is welcoming, respectful, and always have interesting stories to tell. As a busy college student with a part time job. This is the perfect way to forget about stress for a portion of the day. Definitely recommend
This is the Best MMA gym in Olathe. Top-notch Ju-Jitsu, Judo, Kickboxing. The real deal.
Outstanding in every respect. I started over a year ago, and I love this place so much that I aim to go four nights a week. The sensei, Travis Boggs, started when he was 3 years old, earned his black belt at age 17, has won competitions all over the world, and has more skills, ideas, experience, and credentials than I can count. But Mr. Boggs is more than a very effective martial artist; he is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered. He is patient, yet he always keeps everyone focused. He is crystal clear in his explanations, even though martial arts requires lots of concentration. His language is crisp, sharp, accurate. But most of all, he makes every student, whether they've been practicing for 15 minutes or 15 years, feel 100% welcome. If you want to pick up very practical skills...if you want a challenge...if you want a mind/body experience...if you want to be part of an excellent community of very kind yet effective practitioners, I honestly can't imagine a better place to learn a wide variety of jujitsu, judo, kickboxing, and other arts. The sensei is outstanding. The community is outstanding. You will grow, and enjoy doing it. Give it a try!
Best mma gym in the city. The instructors are very knowledgeable in bjj, judo, kickboxing and karate
We joined the Kenukan family over 10 years ago and train in both the adult and youth classes. It truly is a family with Sensei Travis Boggs and his wife, Destiny, leaving everyone feel cared for and that they are important to both them personally and to the dojo overall. Both adult and youth students gain skills in a variety of martial arts, like ju-jitsu and judo! Want your kid to practice all of these skills and more? This is your place!
Kenukan academy is an amazing place for students of all ages to learn mixed martial arts. Their blended approach of jujitsu, judo, and kickboxing is engaging and consistentlly gives students a new challenge. The owners are beyond knowledgeable and professional. My kids have learned so much and are showing improvement in their focus and self discipline, as well as improvements in physical strength and body awareness.
Kenukan Academy offers a fantastic environment for my kids to learn the fundamentals of many varieties of martial arts, including their favorite Ju-Jitsu.
10/10, best martial arts experience we have had in the area. I wanted my daughter to actually learn how to defend herself if needed— the instructor here is invested in the kids learning actual skills. I love the combination of kickboxing, jiujitsu, and the overall MMA environment so my daughter can feel confident and empowered if she is ever in a scary situation. Truly a gem of a place! So grateful to have found them!
I have known Sensei Travis Boggs since I started training at Kenukan 21 years ago. After having experiences all over the world through a military career, being a human performance professional, and living/training in multiple states, I can honestly say that Sensei Travis' knowledge and skill are among the best in the Nation, if not the best. Beyond his effectiveness (from a lifetime of training) in Ju-Jitsu, Judo, Kickboxing, and MMA; his character as a person is at the top of the list that makes Kenukan the dojo family that is it. His wife Destiny is pretty awesome too. I trust Kenukan instructors and staff so much, that now my kids are training there as well. I am not the only multi-generational family to have come through Kenukan. This is not your typical pay-for-your-belt martial arts school. Adults and kids alike will learn lifelong skills that will serve them throughout the years.
All i can tell you is it’s worth it. i been training for almost two years and don’t regret a second of it. Kenukan academy is no Mc Dojo so if you wanna learn martial arts learn from great sensei’s and great student try Kenukan it will improve health and quality of life if your consistent.
A great place to develop Discipline. Very professionals and experience. 100% recommended
My wife and I have been going to Kenukan for almost a year and love it! Sensei Boggs is very knowledgeable and effective at teaching a range of martial arts skills, from traditional to modern combat sports and self-defense. He, along with all of the other students, create a very welcoming atmosphere that makes us eager to come back each week to learn more.
Joining this dojo has been an opportunity to learn new skills and get great exercise at the same!
I joined the Kenukan family 25+ years ago then ended up moving out of state. I was excited to resume my training after I moved back to KC and signed my son up as well. Sensei Travis is able to share his impressive martial arts knowledge and skills by providing detailed instruction that improves your proficiency in your selected discipline whether it be grappling/striking/self-defense or all of the above. The training at Kenukan is top notch and I always look forward to attending class! Whether your goal is to learn to defend yourself or become a better martial artist, Kenukan can help you get there if you are willing to put in the work.
Travis is awesome! Get yourself enrolled👏🏼
I was looking for a place to resume judo journey after a 35 year hiatus. I stumbled upon the ads for Kenukan Academy. I took the introductory lesson and I've been there ever since, going on 3 years now. It is challenging to learn judo/jujitsu, kickbox/karate, and self defense. Sensei Travis is by far the best instructor I have ever been around. He can break complex moves down and make them seem simple. This is not a "black belt factory", but the knowledge and skill and experience I have gained in 3 years is beyond compare.
I have been part of the Kenukan family for 25+ years. Thank goodness I walked into this dojo after moving to the area. I had trained at a few other places before joining Kenukan. However, this school is on a whole ‘nother level. Kenukan is the real deal. The world class training here is very well rounded, yet students are welcome to focus on their favorite disciplines too, whether Karate, Kickboxing, Ju-Jutsu, Self Defense, etc. I can’t say enough good things about Kenukan. If you are looking for the best of the best in martial arts schools, look no further.
I’ve been a student at Kenukan academy for many years. It’s a second home for me and my family, especially my special needs daughter. I’ve looked at other schools and theirs no place I’d rather be. The training is of the highest quality, where rank is earned not given.
I've been a student at Kenukan for a number of years and I love coming here. Sensei Travis Boggs is a ridiculously skilled martial artist while also being a great teacher. The variety of techniques (with overarching broad categories of striking, grappling, and self-defense) results in a practical and well-rounded curriculum. Everyone is respectful and the other students are helpful, friendly, and work well with people of all skill levels. The fact that it takes dedication and effort to get promoted is a good thing and stands in contrast to some McDojo schools that pump out black belts like they're going out of style. I would recommend anyone who is interested in martial arts or self-defense or even in getting better shape to come out and give it a try.
We love this place! It's much more than a Dojo, it's a second family. I know that not only is my son getting the best martial arts training around but that both Bob and Travis care about him on a personal level. They simply love what they do. He's made great friends and unexpectedly, so have I. I was first referred to Kenukan by a friend who had two brothers go through the program years ago. I loved knowing someone who knew these instructors on a personal level. We had tried martial arts at other places and to be honest it all came down to what color belt you had and how fast you got it. That's not what Kenukan is about. You won't hemorrhage money on belts. You will learn skills and when you've accomplished the right skills you will move up, whether you are a child or an adult. It's the same for both. I would refer anyone of my friends to Kenukan
I have been a student at Kenukan for about 4 years. Sensei Travis Boggs is an exceptional martial artist and teacher whose passion and enthusiasm is contagious! Kenukan Ryu integrates techniques from many styles of martial arts resulting in a well-rounded curriculum with an underlying theme of practicality and self-defense. The mental and physical benefits you will develop are priceless. If you want to learn REAL fighting skills and know you've EARNED your rank, this is the place to be!
I have studied under many known, top instructors since 1989 and I can tell you that Travis Boggs is the best I've ever studied under. His attention to detail, patience and teaching style is second to none. I have also enrolled my grandson because Travis is awesome with kids and they love him.
Resume speaks for itself. Want you or your kid to have a black belt in a year? Go to a strip mall gym. Want to learn from the best and earn your skills? Come here.
I have been a student for 20 years. Kenukan is a place for serious martial artists as well as those looking to gain fundamental self defense skills. I have been so impressed by their depth of knowledge and skill that I look forward to learning from them for the rest of my life. My children attend as well and are growing in confidence and athleticism with each class. They enjoy the classes and can't wait to go back and learn more. I know we have a second family at Kenukan.
My older son has been enrolled in Kenukan Academy of Self-Defense for more than 2 and a half years, my younger son will start there in October. Travis Boggs is a skilled instructor that seamlessly integrates striking and grappling in his system. Some students my be galled at the slow pace of rank advancement at Kenukan, but having previously studied in Jim Harrison's and Steve Mackey's Bushidokan system of Karate, I understood the values and rank structure that I was signing my kids up for at Kenukan. I strongly value the fact that rank there cannot be bought. It does not matter how much money has been spent, or how much time you have invested, only the skillset you have developed. If you have the skills you EARN the rank. I like that there are no kiddie black-belts here. Their youth program allows children the possibility to advance up to green belt. Bob Boggs, Travis' father and the founder of the dojo once explained that "Our black belts are meant to be expert-level fighters. I would never trust a 10 year old to teach a troop of marines hand-to-hand combat skills they need, so a 10-year-old should not be wearing a black belt." Ranking is slow for their adults, too... but because the rank is actually earned and hard-to-earn, there is real achievement and pride associated with it. And even Kenukan's lowest ranking students have developed more skill than what I've witnessed at some other training centers, so I am confident I have my kids enrolled in the right place. Character isn't built by doing the easy things. "Anything can be made easily or bought cheaply, but that which must be earned dearly holds the greatest value."
I've gone to this dojo off an on for over 15 years. I started in Junior High. After high school, I went to college, and moved to Seattle for a couple years. I come back to it whenever I'm in town. I've been to other martial arts schools in Kansas City, Seattle, and France, and none can compare to Kenukan. It is the real deal.
I was badly injured taking a class here. Would not recommend!
This establishment loves to use teens as practice dummies. Teens are held back and not allowed to test even when they are ready. This was not only observed with my son but with other teens. My son had a few years experience in karate. We moved into the area and my son wanted to get back into martial arts. He wanted to learn something new and decided on Kenukan. We made it through the 12 month payment program and my son still was not allowed to test. The establishment states if the customer is not satisfied then they will refund the customer. But when we complained and requested a refund they refused.
