Really an awesome place to learn jiu-jitsu, get a great workout, and make friends for life. What I love most about Heavy Mettle is how everyone is treated with respect, we all take care of each other, and egos are left outside. The instructors are top notch - every one of them dedicated to helping the students learn and grow. None more than Derek Stevens, the owner, who teaches most of the classes. Derek's curriculum based approach to teaching is incredible. The classes are thoroughly planned months in advance with the flexibility to modify the instruction based on new information all the time. Derek introduces the material gradually week after week over the course of months, building on what was previously taught. This results in so much better understanding and retention. I have gained a much deeper understanding of many top and bottom positions in two years at Heavy Mettle Jiu-Jitsu Academy, than I did in five years at various other schools. Finally, maybe more important than anything else, Derek goes out of his way to maintain a very clean and hygienic facility. I feel super fortunate to have the opportunity to train at Heavy Mettle and look forward to doing so for a long time.
One of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences of my life. Derek does an amazing job creating a community of like minded individuals that values hard work. and commitment. I can’t recommend Heavy Mettle Jiu-Jitsu enough. I joined HMJJ a little over a month ago after training at another school for quite a while. From the moment I walked through the door I’ve been welcomed like a friend by everyone. Derek and his team of instructors are top notch, and have created a sense of community that’s apparent in every class. The atmosphere is one of consideration, encouragement and challenge, any egos are checked at the door, and training partners understand that we all start our training at the same place, all of which provide opportunity to develop skill and get a great workout. As someone who started training Jiu-Jitsu in their 50s, I’m confident that this sport isn’t just for younger practitioners, and if you’re just starting, you’ll wish you started sooner, but you’re never too old to begin. The academy schedule also offers multiple opportunities to train throughout the week, including Saturday and Sunday. If you’ve ever thought about getting a great workout in a welcoming environment with some great humans, I recommend giving Heavy Mettle Jiu-Jitsu a go, you’ll be glad you did.

The kids’ classes are engaging, fun, and challenging in all the right ways. As for me, it’s been an incredible opportunity to learn alongside her. The training pushes us to be better physically and mentally, and the sense of community here is unmatched. Everyone is dedicated to helping each other grow, both on and off the mats. My son has been training here for 8 months in the 8-12 year old group. This academy has done wonders for his self esteem, focus, physical fitness, resiliency, and confidence. I HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone thinking about getting their kids into this type of activity. I have been training here for 5 months. The culture here is great. The gym is clean. The other members are supportive and a great group of people. The instructors are knowledgeable and clearly committed to success. I’ve started here in my 40’s. It’s not too late to start if you’re considering it. Training partners are great and look out for each other in training. Nobody is looking to crush each other which is good considering I have to go to my job after training. I’m not one to leave many reviews, but I can’t say enough good things about Heavy Mettle. You’ll never be sorry you showed up.

Heavy Metal BJJ offers some of the finest instruction you will find in New England. Multiple talented coaches, very effective curriculum in a variety of disciplines from gi to no gi to muay thai to childrens programming. Great mat space, super clean and the location is convenient being right on rt. 1 with ample parking. Most importantly, Derek has created a welcoming community within his membership.

I have been training here for just under a month now. I signed up with absolutely ZERO knowledge of jiu Jitsu. Derek and the folks that train under him have been amazing, patient and helpful to work with me. The training itself is a ton of fun and a great workout to top it off. I was way out of my comfort zone trying this my biggest concern going in was my lack of knowledge and looking foolish but this was 100% NOT THE CASE. I was welcomed and treated as if I had always been there everyone was eager to help and answer any and all of my questions. If you are looking for a place to train/get a great workout while being part of an amazing group then this is the place to go
Heavy Mettle Jiu Jitsu is one of the best risks I have ever taken. After having two kids I stopped working out and really noticed that the void in physical activity was having an impact on my mental and physical well being. My interest in going back to the gym was relatively nonexistent and I wanted something different. So I signed up for a free week and took my first class. I was hooked. After class I immediately enrolled as a full time student that was a year and a half ago. The class schedule is very convenient and even as a business owner I can train 4-6 times a week. My mind and body have been transformed and that growth continues. I don't just want to train any more, I have to train. I need it and crave it. Derek Stevens and the other instructors are top notch. Every class is a valuable experience. When a student struggles with a technique Derek and the staff take the time to personally coach them through it. The dynamic of group classes while being able to apply individual attention is a dynamic not easily achieved unless you truly love what you do. Derek and the staff truly love what they do. In addition to the health benefits the community at the academy is great. Students support each other, the experienced students help those who are less experienced. I've have made new friends, connected and networked with folks that have helped my business and have found some new customers. This is a family.

We signed our 6 year old daughter up with Heavy Mettle BJJ to help work on her discipline and listening skills, while doing it in a fun, yet competitive atmosphere, along with learning the principals of defending herself. We couldn’t be happier with Heavy Mettle, and their kids program, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great activity/sport for their kids (or adults).
I joined Heavy Metal last June as a present to myself for my 51st Birthday. It was the best thing I’ve done for myself in a long time! Derek is a fantastic coach and an even better person. His coaches, Matt, Tony and Casey are incredibly helpful and really great guys. The people I’ve meet are welcoming and patient when it comes to helping new people learn the ropes. I can’t recommend Heavy Metal enough!
Tried a free class, highly recommend taking the free class opportunity, training facility was welcoming. I have no formal training (was a high school wrestler) and everyone from the well informed and experienced instructor to any member they were all extremely helpful. Best experience that I could have asked for and now I have signed up for unlimited classes and plan on being there five times a week. If you want to learn Jiu Jitsu from any level man or woman give Heavy Mettle a try you will not regret it.

Tried contacting these guys a bunch to jump in a class. No one responded by call, email, or social media. Decided to just go to a class. Got lost on the way, I was 23 minutes late and the coach said I could not join because I was 30 minutes late. Not exactly the friendliest either. Have to say driving cross country busting countless gyms along the way; these guys were the worst.
