A King of the Mats, Humble and Welcoming: Training with Delman Carvalho I had the incredible privilege of training with Professor Delman Carvalho, an opportunity extended to me by his esteemed black belt, Daniel Mejia. Stepping onto the mats with Professor Carvalho was an experience I won't soon forget. One of my favorite things about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is precisely this: you can simply walk into a gym and have the chance to talk with and learn from legends. Professor Carvalho embodies this beautifully. What immediately struck me was his commanding presence; he truly embodies the presence of a king on the mats. Yet, despite his immense skill and reputation, he is profoundly humble. He treats everyone like family, creating an atmosphere where you feel instantly welcomed and valued, regardless of your experience level. His guidance is insightful, and his demeanor is genuinely warm and approachable. It's clear why Daniel Mejia holds him in such high regard. Professor Carvalho embodies the true spirit of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, not just in technique, but in character and community building. Training with him was an absolute honor and an inspiring reminder of the highest ideals of martial arts.

His expertise and commitment to each student's success make every class an enriching experience. Del goes beyond merely teaching techniques; he imparts a deep understanding of the art, its philosophy, and its application in real-life situations. His dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive training environment is evident in every class. Del genuinely cares about his students' progress, both on and off the mats. Posted 2 years agoWhen my family moved from Canada to Florida, I had no idea where we would resume our regular daily BJJ training. My teenage Daughter had just earned her Blue belt and I had received my Black belt. Training was an integral part of our lives, and we were intent on continuing our BJJ lifestyle. As fate would have it, we were renting a place near Professor Delmans 'Gustavo Machado BJJ Punta Gorda' school. We showed up one evening in July of 2022 and were immediately welcomed and warmly greeted. It felt like home. 5 months later, despite moving to another town, we are still happily training with Professor Delman! What a pleasure it has been to train with a true 'Master of his Craft.' Although I considered myself to be 'well versed' in BJJ when I arrived in Florida, Professor Delman is constantly showing movements, sequences and variations that I'd never seen before and i often find myself having those mental 'ah ha!' moments. His teaching material is a nice blend of 'old school' and 'new school' along with BJJ Self Defence applications. Having been involved in the BJJ World in Brazil and the US for over 30 years Professor Delman is an absolute wealth of information. I have observed him instructing Children, Teens, and Adults - begginner White belts and high level Competitive Purple, Brown and Black belts. Whatelse can I say?! The Man is a Legend at what he does and I highly recommend him. Check him out!
Posted 3 years agoReal, old school jiu-jitsu. So glad I was talked into checking this place out. 3yrs going and I still make the 35minute drive. Del is genuine, loves teaching jiu-jitsu, and will push you to become a better person. Both on the mats and off the mats. He will promote when ready without any financial obligation, so you know you've earned it. (some gyms will charge you for a belt promotion, which cheapens the promotion in my opinion). The people who train here are high caliber athletes, who are very welcoming and encouraging. Can't speak highly enough about Del, and this gym. Definitely worth checking out.
Posted 3 years agoProfessor Delman is a gem. Dropped in a bjj class from out of town. I was very impressed with his curriculum, gym culture and students. Very respectful, hospitable, sharp and well trained. Gave me some absolute work and a few new details and tricks to take with me. Thank you guys. I’ll be back whenever I’m in town.
