We had a great exeperience here over the last few years for our son.
The gym has a very healthy minset and we found it to be a very positive place for both young boys and girls to begin their training in martial arts.
When my son was interested in taking Jiu Jitsu, I was lucky enough to find Greenwood Jiu Jitsu. From the moment we entered the children's class, it was clear that Coach Chris clearly understands how to work with young children. Every session balanced discipline, clear instruction, and genuine fun.
After six months of sitting on the sidelines, I decided to try Jiu Jitsu for myself. Luckily, Greenwood offers a family class, and this has been an amazing experience for us. Watching my child correct, teach, and encourage me while in an environment with other parents and children is my favourite way to spend a Saturday morning.
Any curious parent, regardless of experience or gender, should try the family class. There's no better way to have real conversations about teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving than after demonstrating these skills. It's also a lot of fun in a supportive environment that encourages the process of trying something new.
My kids have been training with Coach Chris for a few years now (since March 2020) and they learned a lot (and still learning a lot more!). They will continue to attend his classes until they master all the techniques. He is a very good teacher and patient with kids. If you are looking for someone to teach your kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Coach Chris is the guy! Highly recommended!
My kids have been training at Greenwood Jiu-jitsu for close to 8 years. It all started with my now teenager son who at that time was just 6 years old. Eventually, my daughter joined in as well when she turned 6 years old as well - it has been great to see them both grow confidently in their practice and the friendships they have made attending various classes 2x per week!
Chris does a great job offering different levels of classes catering to beginner, intermediate and more advance level for the kids who choose to join tournaments. He always encourages the more experienced kids to teach and help the less experienced ones. In addition to this, he holds fun seasonal events for the kids including Halloween, Nerf Gun Party and the annual in-house tournament. Joining Greenwood Jiu-jitsu has been one of the best decisions I have made for my kids. It is hard to believe that my son will soon be joining adult classes -- time just flies by!
My three daughters and I joined Greenwood Jiu-Jitsu over six years ago. We began with the family class as a way to bond and stay active together. Coach Chris’s teaching style is incredibly patient, engaging, and motivating — it inspired us to dive deeper into our training.
As we’ve progressed, we’ve eagerly embraced more advanced classes, learned a wide range of techniques, and even prepared for competitions. Throughout, we've felt supported and challenged in the best possible ways.
One of the things we value most is the welcoming and safe community Chris has fostered. The gym includes a diverse mix of both casual and competitive practitioners, spanning all belt levels and age groups. There’s a strong sense of mutual respect on and off the mats, and we’ve made close, lasting friendships because of it.
Coach Chris has instilled in my kids confidence, self-control, and a “never quit” attitude. For me, training has been a rewarding opportunity to test my limits, stay active, and connect with others over a shared passion — an experience I know I’ll look back on fondly.
Greenwood Jiu-Jitsu also offers fun and engaging extras: an annual in-house competition for kids, open mats for extra practice, a phenomenal wrestling program, and creative events like Halloween Black Light and Nerf Gun parties — which keep the kids entertained and give parents a well-earned break (or date night!).
There’s an expression I love: “The hardest belt to earn in Jiu-Jitsu is your white belt.” So stop reading reviews and come try a class — you’ll see for yourself just how special this place is!
As a female practitioner at Greenwood Jiu-Jitsu in Toronto, I can confidently say that this gym provides an incredibly supportive, welcoming, and empowering environment for all students, regardless of experience or gender.
From the moment I walked in, I felt an immediate sense of community. Chris is not only highly skilled and experienced, but he also make it a priority to ensure that everyone feels comfortable, especially women who may be new to the sport or feeling unsure in a male-dominated space. They take the time to provide individual feedback, adjust techniques as needed, and ensure that all students are practicing safely.
One of the things that really stands out to me is how inclusive the gym is. There's a strong focus on mutual respect, and the training culture emphasizes working together to help each other improve. I've always felt supported and never intimidated. Whether I’m sparring with a male or female training partner, I’m always treated with respect, and I feel confident that I can ask questions and learn at my own pace.
Overall, Greenwood Jiu-Jitsu has been an amazing experience for me as a female practitioner. It's a place where I feel safe, challenged, and motivated to push myself further. If you're a woman thinking about starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Toronto, I highly recommend giving this gym a try. It’s an incredible place to learn, grow, and be part of a supportive community.
Our family has been training with Chris for over 5 years, and he's a wonderful coach. There's a wide variety of classes for kids and adults so we're always learning something new. Our kids love the annual in-house tournament and silly games after the family classes.
Chris is amazing with kids. The perfect mix of patience, discipline and fun. They all seem to love his class, even though he puts them to work daily. His app also makes it very easy to keep up on everything and the place is well heated in the winter and has ac in the summer. Excellent class for all ages.
Cannot think of one negative thing to say and it would take all day to type out the positives. If you are looking to start or are trying to find a new gym look no further. No matter who you are this is the right place to train. Chris is incredible. I am a very shy person and the atmosphere he creates is both welcoming and motivating. If you are debating it just give it a shot. Like me, you won't regret going to Greenwood Jiu Jitsu.
8 month update...
Choosing greenwood bjj was the best decision I've ever made. The talent here is incredible and training is always fun but also serious. Premium coaching with an abundance of experience, skill and knowledge. I've talked to many people since I've started from other gyms and I can say without a doubt that the quality of coaching here has led me to progress much quicker than I ever thought possible.
3 Year update...Home away from home.
4 Years...and still.
Chris is a great teacher. He has the perfect balance of structure / lesson while keeping it fun. I see this in each class as the kids listen attentively and focus. Kids to stretching, calisthenics and learn a new skill weekly.
My daughter (9) as been doing it now for 4 months and likes it very much. She is gaining confidence in learning unique fighting and self defense skills which are very beneficial and helpful for all ages!
I highly recommend.
Greenwood Jiu Jitsu has pretty much been my second home for the last 3 + years. Chris is an excellent instructor that focuses on teaching high percentage techniques that work well in live, high pressure situations.
The atmosphere of the gym is positive and unpretentious. The training partners here are helpful and supportive, whether you are a beginner or you are at a more advanced level. Don't expect easy promotions here; stripes and belts are only earned by hard work and persistence, as they should be. Overall, a great place to train and call home.
