A great place to learn and train for all skill levels. Friendly teachers and students, clean and safe environment, and a good community.
I am a new student to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Portland. I was initially drawn to it from watching the women's self-defense video on their website, and after I had completed the 10 day trial, I just fell in love with it! I signed up for the monthly membership and I will be mostly doing the Women's Empowerment series. Arianna and Jordan are both EXCELLENT teachers, their style is accessible for newbies like me as well as more advanced students. I can also see that Taylor will one day be a teacher too, as she has been a great assistant to Arianna during the classes.
Gracie Jiujitsu Portland has a great program and is a very fun and safe place to train.
Was in town working on a project so dropped by and attended the Combatives class as well as master cycle. I’m a blue belt in LA at a different CTC but everyone here was super cool and Jordan is an excellent instructor. 100 percent recommend this school for anyone that is interested in self defense in a safe environment. There’s young women and older men and everything in between which is what you want so you can practice moves on different body types. Stop reading and go see for yourself.
They have a great environment for learning and encouragement.
Our teenage daughter started with a self defense class here two years ago and she has progressed so much. She has gained a lot of confidence plus it is a great environment for our daughter. It is a positive place to learn Jiu-Jitsu.
My daughter is always happy after the classes. Everyone is kind and so helpful. We all love Gracie Jujitsu Portland!
I love the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Most BJJ schools have a focus on sport and/or tournament type training and I appreciate that GJJ is pure self-defense oriented. Super cooperative & safe training, friendly & fun learning environment. I really like the format in how the lessons are taught. Plus, they offer the best women's self-defense program I've ever found. When you sign up with a membership, you receive access to the techniques taught in a detailed video format which helps tremendously for review or remote training. I highly recommend.
Great place to train! Instructors and students are all very encouraging and welcoming.
This is one of very few BJJ schools that focus on self defense elements. At the same time, one of the safest schools to train at. Highly recommend!
Gracie Jiu Jitsu has been an awesome addition to my life the past few months, specifically the Women Empowered program! The environment of the class is very welcoming, encouraging, and just the right balance of pressure, so that you feel challenged to grow but you don’t have to be perfect. I’ve appreciated the passion that each instructor puts into their sessions, making sure to explain the purpose of each technique. Would highly recommend Gracie Jiu Jitsu if you are looking for a place to learn women’s self defense strategies.
Very methodical and thorough training that emphasizes safety and learning together. The instructors are awesome and keep things fun and interesting. If you are looking to learn practical, streetwise self-defense this is the place.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Bullyproof is definitely the best. My son loves the classes and the coaches. They make it fun and engaging while still teaching Jiu-Jitsu and helping to develop the kids character. We've tried other Jiu-Jitsu places yet the programs lack excitement and take the fun out of learning. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Bullyproof program does all of it. We are so happy with the program and encourage anyone to join!
I've wanted to get into jiu-jitsu for the longest time. I tried other gyms and left not really feeling like I learned any jiu-jitsu whatsoever. But my experience at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Portland was like a night-and-day difference. The coaches Jordan and Ben are super approachable and know what they're doing. The curriculum is comprehensive and structured. I feel like I've actually started learning jiu-jitsu since coming here. Finally, the class culture is great. The fellow students are very nice, and no one is trying to kill each other. Everyone is there for mutual benefit and learning. Furthermore, I had to take about two weeks off this month to go to Phoenix. While I was there, I found several Gracie schools, so I was able to keep my training going!
My kids attended here for over 1 year in the bullyproof program. One stayed til he was past the point of aging out because he liked it so much! The other is working through his gray belt and on his 2nd year. I like that it focuses on character development and "verbal jiu jitsu" as much as it does on physical empowerment. There is an extremely low adult:student ratio in the kids' class.
Great BJJ school. There's a great culture among the students and approchable instructors who are very beginner friendly. Excellent instruction in BJJ for beginners of all kinds; those who've never done sports, those with an expensive athletic background, refuges from high intensity combat sport BJJ, and all those in between. If you're goal is begin the marathon that is learning BJJ and you want detailed instructions and training regarding all the foundational moves in BJJ, this is the school for you.
Just had my first class and this was an awesome, fun, and very encouraging experience. Great culture for people wanting to learn, from the coaches and the students.
I’ve had an outstanding experience training here! The instructors are top-notch—professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly skilled at tailoring lessons to fit my personal needs and goals. They’re so accommodating and really take the time to ensure that each technique is understood, breaking everything down in a way that’s easy to grasp. The atmosphere is always welcoming and friendly, making it easy to focus and feel at ease. I can see my progress with each session, and it’s clear the staff genuinely care about helping their students succeed. If you’re looking for personalized, high-quality jiu-jitsu instruction, this gym is a fantastic choice!
Very impressed! So thankful to have found this school. Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu programs utilize a detailed curriculum, and an intentionally safe, respectful and non-violent environment. In addition to that, the Portland location has big windows and nice natural lighting, clean bathrooms, water-station, student cubbies, chairs, and clean mats. The instructor Jordan, took time listening to my prior injury list and intentionally paired me with students who were advanced enough and willing to show me the techniques while being cognizant of my injuries. Jordan showed me the technique first / supervised with other students; I received in depth personal coaching from him, which is actually hard to find. Carter, and Icak (more advanced students) both taught me important lessons and let me feel what it is like to have dominant position/ or submit them. They also would slowly dominate/submit me and allow me to feel what it's like but with very intentional, small increments that were not causing me to be injured or tap; just feel the pressure and learn the motions. We talked about my injuries before starting and had a game plan. The wildest part of this whole scenario is that even with having the detailed self defense curriculum (with videos), best training facilities, and knowledgeable training partners; it is still cheaper than the other BJJ gyms in Portland. If you're interested in learning Jiu-Jitsu, but not sure, you cannot go wrong with their free trial period.
Most importantly the people are amazing. Instructors Jordan Ben and Spencer are really cool, charismatic individuals. Although I’ve known Jordan and Ben for less than a week I can tell it will be a treat to learn and train with these athletes. Man what a clean facility that’s well organized. As far as the space, the mats, the bathrooms, all spectacular. Curriculum seems to have a smooth flow with easy transition for most if not all ages, levels of experience, and even gender. The application GJJ uses seems to be evolving into a well rounded piece of the puzzle. Easy navigation and clear concise scheduling/booking are highlights almost as awesome as the content page which has SOOO many instructional videos. Emphasis on the sooo!!!!
I cannot say enough about how wonderful Jordan and Ben are. These two invited me in with open arms. Their patience and skill levels are top-notch. I feel honored to be accepted amongst them and their amazing students. Super friendly atmosphere and fun safe class environment.
Traveling to Portland, GU PDX warmly welcomed me to join a combatives class while in town. Ben led the session with a great mix of technical and instructional skill. Thank you!
Humble, knowledgeable, genuinely good people who are passionate about living a good, healthy lifestyle while helping others do the same. I feel like that Prodigal Son who FINALLY returned home and was welcomed with open arms.
Couldn’t ask for a better experience! I have never been anything but happy with the classes I’ve taken here. Everyone should learn jiu-jitsu, and this is the place to do it!
I’ve been training in the Combatives program for a few months now and it has been great. All the coaches are fantastic. Everyone is welcoming and supportive, and the program is perfect for new people interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I highly recommend you try it out.
Incredible. Ted and his team are amazing instructors with an emphasis on safety and quality lessons for every skill level. I come back every year from Alaska to train with him and it is the highlight of my trip. If your interested in learning jiu-jitsu or already have experience you want to take to the next level this is the place! Thank you Ted, Ben and PDX crew!
Amazing school! Highly recommend for anyone that wants to learn jujitsu in a safe environment without the pressure of egos. The instructors are VERY helpful and respectful - the students are willing to help and the culture reflects that.
As a first time jiu-jitsu and martial arts practitioner, I am so thankful I found Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. If you’re looking for a new place to train and somewhere to start, this is 100% the school for you. Whether you are first starting out, wanting to learn self defense or to continue your jiu-jitsu journey, give this school a chance. I have been training for 3 months now and have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience with all the instructors, students and overall atmosphere of the school. My first impression really made it easy for me to get my foot in the door and overcome my anxiety stepping into an unfamiliar environment. My first class I felt incredibly welcomed by all of the instructors and students. Ted, Ben and Spencer all have a passion for teaching and never make you feel ashamed to ask about something you don’t understand and they keep working with you until you have the confidence to move forward. One of my favorite attributes about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, is the huge emphasis they put on student safety and injury prevention. Not only is their beginner program phenomenal, but they also offer classes to all skill level/belt rankings. They even offer a free 10-day trial so you don’t feel pressured to commit to a membership on your first day.
My experience here was very positive from the first class. Coach Ted and instructors Ben and Spencer were all very welcoming and made sure to make me feel included in the group, as well as giving me the extra coaching and attention that i needed as someone new to martial arts. The pace in the combatives program is great for beginners yet theres still something new to be learned and improved on in every class, and they have more advanced programs for someone whos got some stripes under their belt. So dont be intimidated, give the free trial a try! Ive already recommended it to a couple of friends.
Coach Ted, and instructors Ben and Spencer, are all very knowledgeable, always focusing first on street self-defense. They are great at meeting students where they’re at, whatever their level of fitness, and whatever they are wanting to get out of Jujitsu. Coach Ted also sets a great tone, and egos are left at the door, from the newest students to the competitors and higher belts. I tried a couple schools before this one, and have now been at Gracie PDX over a year. Highly recommended.
Coach Ted runs a highly professional and friendly school. His teaching staff are quality instructors that offer a welcoming environment to both novice and experienced practitioners. Ted stresses safety and situational awareness during classes which I really appreciate in order to help avoid injuries. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Portland is a Gracie University Certified Training Center which is awesome! The program is both applicable to self defense and sport Jiu-Jitsu. Best of all Portland Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a community of friendly, supportive and great people.
This was my first martial arts experience with the goal of learning a useful life skill. A very welcoming space, especially for beginners, and you quickly build a community with students of all levels. All instructors are friendly & knowledgeable. They are passionate about teaching, providing detailed instruction and safety tips with all maneuvers to stay injury free. If you put in the effort, you’ll reap the rewards. Try it, you might like it!!
I enrolled my daughter in their “bully proof” kids class. She loves the school! The instructors are great with the kids of all ages. My daughter is a sixth grader at the oldest end of the kids class, but they’re great at making tiered instruction, so it doesn’t feel too kiddy for the 10 to 12 year olds. So glad we found this school!
4 reasons to consider Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Portland: 1. On day one, Ted, the owner/lead instructor, made it clear that he was interested in my success. 2. Training is designed for longevity through easy to understand lessons, student safety, and organized cirruculm. 3. Positive environment. The more advanced students are encouraging and patient with less knowledgeable students. 4. Ben is a very detail oriented instructor and has taught me a lot.
Legit Gracie CTC! Great in depth lessons! I can attend classes and not worry about being injured (which is the most important thing to me). Everybody is friendly and willing to help each other grow into better practitioners. The master cycle is perfect. Check it out!!
You’re interested in learning Brazilian Jiujitsu. You want to learn self defense. You’re nervous / intimidated by joining a fight club. You’re In/Out of shape. You like fun, supportive, social environments with no drama and ego. If this is you, Gracie Jiujitsu Portland might just be the place for you! TLDR. I’ve been training different martial arts for most of my life and have been training Brazilian Jiujitsu, BJJ, for over 15 years & at several gyms in Portland and elsewhere throughout the years. At the time of this review, I am a 54yo 4-stripe Blue belt awaiting my time to test for Purple Belt. Gracie Jiujitsu, GJJ, Portland, PDX, is different than most BJJ gyms in town. It has a highly structured, non-threatening curriculum for learning Brazilian Jiujitsu. GJJ PDX teaches the Gracie HQ - Torrance curriculum followed by all Gracie Certified-Training-Centers, CTC, worldwide. GJJ is the curriculum created by Rener & Ryron Gracie brothers, grand children of the famous Helio Gracie. If you are just beginning, you will enroll in the GJJ “Combatives” program where you learn Self-defense focused Jiujitsu which is comprised of the most historically common BJJ techniques used to defend oneself against a non-Jiujitsu assailant. There is also a parallel “Women Empowered” class focused on specific women’s self-defense scenarios / techniques / situational awareness. In both these classes there will be techniques learned with a partner and exercises to develop combat reflexes. It is highly suited to anyone of any level of fitness. You will not be full-contact “sparring” / “rolling” with any of your partners during this time. Sparring will not occur until after you graduate from Combatives and begin the “Master Cycle” of classes. In this sense, the beginning learner does not find oneself in situations that can be frightening, nerve wracking, dangerous, intimidating, super-uncomfortable, etc & during such time when you’ve barely started to learn the techniques and develop the right instincts. After completing Combatives or if you are an intermediate+ BJJ practitioner from another Gym you can join the Master Cycle where further self defense techniques are learned as well as “BJJ vs BJJ” techniques. You’ll roll / spar at the end of class, should you wish, alternating between GI, no-Gi, and “street sparring” / Combat-Jiujitsu where you put on the gloves and include punches; my favorite! Of note, enrollment at GJJ PDX includes access to GracieUniversity digital content where you can watch videos of each lesson before/after you attend class to help alleviate anxiety about the lesson-of-the-day or just to get more detail on/ remember the techniques in question. Note. If you are looking to be the next ADCC / MMA champion, there are several other gyms in the PDX area that may be more suitable. The Vibe. Ted is the head coach and owner at GJJ PDX and is a GJJ Brown Belt, at the time of this review, under Rener & Ryron, GJJ HQ. Ted is super positive and a great teacher - well informed, enthusiastic and supportive. The space is clean and the mats sanitized every day. Members are friendly, positive, and welcoming. No weird fight-club, in-it-to-win-it vibes. It’s a great place filled with men & women of all body types and ethnicities. For those of you wanting to learn Brazilian Jiujitsu, trying GJJ PDX should definitely be considered. There is a free 10-day trial period to see if ya like the vibe too. Hopefully you’ve found the above helpful. If you want to know more about the GJJ angle on learning BJJ, Google GracieUniversity and checkout all the content there or give Ted a call. The program discussed by Rener and Ryron is the program taught at GJJ PDX and it is fun, challenging and legit. I hope to see ya there someday, come on in for a look see - the water’s warm.
Great gym to train at. The vibe from the coach down to everyone on the mat is friendly with a lot of camaraderie and a focus on training good technique safely. Felt welcomed here from the start. Highly recommend!
Great place to start for foundation and fundamentals
I've been training at this school for about 10 months and I love it! Starting out with the Gracie Combatives program sets a sustainable pace for sticking with Jiu Jitsu until the bug really gets you :). It's an extremely welcoming environment to newcomers, and Ted (the owner) is really committed to making people feel at home and helping them develop whatever their Jiu Jistsu goals are! Getting into Jiu Jitsu can feel overwhelming so I recommend people just give it a chance here! Come to a class enjoy a great workout and develop some tried and true self defense!
If you are looking for top-tier self defense training that comes in a safe, clean, friendly, and collaborative environment, then this is the school for you! The head instructor Ted is very knowledgable and does a great job of conveying information even if you have zero experience with jiu-jitsu. For more advanced students, there are additional class offerings that expand technical knowledge while testing reflexes and sharpening memory recall. I highly recommend this school!
Traveled to Portland for work so I stopped in for a Class while here. Great instruction and the very friendly group of training partners. If your interested in jiujitsu Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Portland comes highly recommended 👍
Best place to go for your self defense development. Easy to learn from instructor. Really great small setting and class, I'm sure that won't last long so definitely book your sessions as soon as possible.
Loved it! My first class was tonight. It was excellent! Great teacher, and great students. Just an all-around great time!
Very friendly instructor and welcoming environment. I've been looking to start training Jiu Jitsu for a long time and the combatives course feels like the perfect place to start!
Just started training here after training with Gracie Univerisity via Zoom over the last year. GJJ Portland is a very welcoming and friendly environment with helpful and customized training; training curriculum is right from the source. Looking forward to training here for many years!
Been training here since its Hillsboro days. Friendly instructor and no pushy attitude makes learning Jujitsu not intimidating at all. Plus it’s it’s a Gracie Univ CTC so video reviews help refreshing techniques a lot! Recommended for all to come!
I have been attending classes at Gracie JJ in PDX for about a year now and have been very pleased with my progress. Ben and Jordan do a great job of teaching clearly and making sure everyone understands mentally and physically what needs to be done. Attending Gracie has given me more confidence in myself as a person, and the confidence to protect myself if I ever need to. They also have a bullyproof program for kids which entails a fun curriculum and environment. I look forward to continuing my journey with Gracie JJ PDX.
I am very disappointed. I came in here to inquire about classes, and the guy was very rude to me.
