Love this gym. I’ve trained at several gyms and this has the best community, coaching, and facility. It’s super clean, plenty of mat space, and always a great time.
My daughter has had an incredible experience at the 10th Planet Portland kids BJJ class. The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about sharing their love for the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The classes provide a perfect balance of technique, drilling, and live rolling, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation in this complex martial art. Not only has my daughter's BJJ skills improved, but her overall confidence and discipline have grown as well. If you're looking for an engaging and supportive environment for your child to learn BJJ, I highly recommend 10th Planet Portland.
If you’re in Portland looking to learn jiu jitsu for the first time, you’re not going to find a better place than this gym. I came in with 0 experience having only dropped into a couple gyms around for trial runs, and felt more comfortable at 10th planet than anywhere else. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly, no one is there with anything to prove or any ego, everyone is there with the desire to improve themselves and doing it for the love of the game. When you start you’ll most likely decide to stick to the fundamentals class, which is great since as a beginner you’ll only be rolling with other beginners who are starting from scratch like you. As you build your confidence you can start going to open mat after a while, where you can roll with more experienced grapplers and learn even more. Coaches never make you feel like you’re bothering them or wasting their time, and in fact will probably check in on you periodically and will always give you the extra time to go over a technique or answer a question.
Best place for jiu jitsu in Portland! Coach Mike was very welcoming and everyone was friendly!
After only a few short lessons I saw an amazing boost in confidence and kindness from my two girls age 6 and 8 from their kids program. The gym is full of incredibly talented and nice people. They worked amazingly smoothly making us feel at home and just went ahead and adjusted classes to accommodate my daughters who have no experience. Truly couldn't recommend these guys and gals highly enough.
This was one of the best drop-in experiences I’ve had yet. At least 6+ individuals came across the mat to introduce themselves and welcome me. As an older bjj roller, the younger guys that were clearly more talented than me paced down to where I was at and were super respectful. You guys are a class act, keep it up! Jimmy, good luck on your competition this weekend!
I’ve been living in Portland for 20 years and if we ever move this would be the thing we would miss the most. My kids have grown in so many ways by being a part of this gym and the life lessons and skills they learn on and off the mat here will forever be a part of them. The kids program is hands down the best in the city. We have been a part of two other gyms before and there is no comparison to community, care and students here at 10th planet. Coach Morgan and his team of coaches run a world class kids program that is not only technical but fun. The mix of drills, skills training and sparring with a mix of games in between keeps the kids engaged and happy. The community of parents and kids is solid gold. The caliber of kids that come here bring a sense of skill, passion, and it’s like a small family. The engagement from the adults who train here as well as the owners and coaches creates such a family atmosphere. The head coach of the kids program Coach Morgan brings such a high level of jujitsu but most of all really cares for the students and families as if they were his own. The level of patience and care from the coaching team is unmatched. They have Ninja nights where they run games, mini competition brackets, movies, pizza and more games is an absolute blast for the kids but also provides parents a night off. It builds comradery among the kids and allows them to play with each other outside of the gym setting. The gym, the staff, the quality of training and the members make this a truly special place.
this place has changed my life for the better. 10/10 coaches, well kept facilities and more classes than any other BJJ gym i’ve found. Strong community consisting of tough competitors, casual hobbyists and everything in between. Can’t recommend enough. I’m there every day i can be
Great bjj, even better community. Offering high level training for advanced belts and the best fundamentals program in town if you’ve never done bjj, plus the Bang Muay Thai program, 10p pdx has it all. Love this place!!!
I love this gym! The environment, modules, coaches, teammates are all so amazing.
Did a drop-in since I was visiting from out of town. Great instruction, clean facility, but most importantly the awesome training partners. Everyone was super nice and enjoyable to roll with. I learned a ton. This gym really exceeded my expectations. I plan to visit again on my next trip to Portland
10th planet Portland has exceeded my expectations 100 times over! I wanted to learn self defense and have great workouts. I get those things, but the community of amazing people was surprising to me. 10th planet Portland is a supportive community and will help you achieve any goal you have with BJJ, Muay Thai kickboxing, and fitness.
Great facility, coaches, and curriculum I highly suggest attending a class or a Friday open mat
World-class instruction with a world-class community behind it — what more could you ask for? The facility is clean, the staff and other members are accepting of anyone (regardless of background, skill level, gender, etc.). Very welcoming to anyone who might otherwise feel intimidated by walking into a combat sports gym. Wouldn’t wanna train anywhere else!
The second you walk into a 10th planet for the first time, they’re on you and ready to make your first experience with Jiu Jitsu simple, safe, and something you will quickly get obsessed with! Through detailed, technical instruction you will have the opportunity to learn from some absolute beasts who teach both movement AND mindset. Not only is the instruction superb, but the atmosphere is both inviting and, more importantly, safe. There was a month-long period of time I was unable to attend classes and the second I stepped foot back in the gym I was met with enthusiasm and a warm welcome back! As for the safety, 10th planet truly kills it when it comes to ensuring you’ll be rolling with safe people, and they teach you to take care of your partners. If you’re looking to build community, self-defense skills, learn a new mindset, or just have a grand ol’ time, you’ve come to the right/best place :)
The curriculum that they have put into place really helps any person understand the basic movements of jiujitsu. Whether you are a casual hobbyist or a competitor, the coaches will help guide you to the goals that you are trying to achieve. The culture of the gym is one of the best I have ever experience, most people are really easy to get along which helps make long lasting connections with each other. The culture they have are people just trying to uplift each other and make every each other better. I would recommend trying an introduction course , it is a great way to get in shape and learn self defense skills.
Joining 10th Planet Portland has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not only do you get top notch instruction from a wide range of knowledgeable, highly skilled, coaches, but you also get a community that is built on inclusion and personal development. Time on the mats has not only brought me a great outlet to develop myself physically, but has also been a tremendous source of therapy for my mind. 10/10 would recommend 10th Planet Portland. Don’t wait, sign up today!
I highly recommend 10th Planet Portland to anyone interested in jiu jitsu. Whether you are interested in jiu jitsu for fitness, self defense, or sport, this gym has something to offer you. A well thought out curriculum allows students to advance at their own pace. All of the instructors make a point to connect with each and every student on a personal level. A clear attention to detail can be seen throughout the gym whether it be the information taught in class or how clean the gym is kept. Most importantly, and unsurprisingly, the gym has a supportive community that brings out the best in everyone.
Amazing facility and top level training. Was visiting Portland for a few days so I dropped in; did the fundamentals class which was great. Both Amanda and Nikki were great coaches and helped me out with techniques, highly recommended gym!! Will definitely be back once I come back to PDX.
Dropped in on less than a day's notice! Kevin Hughes set me up over text and scheduled me right away. Excellent coaching staff. Learned a new guard pass and got some good rolls in afterwards. 10th Planet Portland is the gold standard.
Good first day. Friendly community, everyone was super thoughtful and made you feel welcomed… look forward to training more….
Had a great experience training at 10th planet! The community here is absolutely amazing. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, especially if you're new to the sport. The instructors are top notch as well. They're super encouraging and very clearly invested in seeing you grow. Can't say enough good things about this place!
i love this school, it is full of kind dedicated artists. i was self taught out of library books and was having some pain in my hips as well as back when i kicked. after a month of going to bang i had no pain when throwing kicks. the fundamentals class is world class.
Great place to train with great people and amazing coaches! Whether advanced or beginner, you'll enjoy the classes!!!
One of my favorite places with amazing high level grapplers
What an amazing place to start your BJJ journey! The facility and coaching staff are simply amazing. Give them a try, you will not be disappointed!
If you are looking for a great community to be a part of while also receiving top class Jiu Jitsu training, this is the gym for you! The coaches are knowledgeable and welcoming, the facility is cleaner than any other gym I’ve been to, and they offer a wide variety of class times so it is almost certain to fit into your schedule. Wether you are just starting out or already on your journey, wether you’re a hobbyist or competitor, please do yourself a favor and contact 10th Planet Portland about becoming a member.
An incredible experience! 10P has an extremely high level of jiu jitsu coaching while also providing a friendly and welcoming environment for beginners. I started Jiu Jitsu in my 40's, so I was a little nervous about stepping in here. From day 1, I was mentored by instructors and staff who were committed to helping me develop as an athlete. My fellow classmates modeled the ethos of becoming better together through training. Being part of the community at 10p Portland has been one of the most positive experiences of my life. If you are thinking about training here, just do it. Highly recommended.
Solid bjj and community. Teaches the fundamentals yet embraces newer ideas as well. Offers striking in addition to wrestling classes. Everyone is helpful and kind. And there's always additional ways to get plugged into the community such as cook outs, movie nights, support groups etc. Lots of women of varying belt colors too (which is hard to find in a school). If you are looking to do nogi bjj I highly recommend this place
This place is truly magical and trains some top level savages on the mats. Phil’s training and philosophy is top notch along with the other coaches here. Would give a 7/5 if I could, if you’re interested in no-gi Jiu jitsu go check them out!
I trained here while vacation. Coach Mike ran the class and covered some good technical details, he had great energy and was very welcoming. Rolling was fun with skilled members who had the right attitude. Highly recommend!
I can only come once a week on Friday for Open Mat! You best believe it is always the highlight of my week! I come from Taekwondo and the staff, coaches, and athlete's all are so welcoming. Regardless of experience or which art you come from 10th Planet will treat you well! Always something to learn from your fellow humans, and 10th Planet is home to some stellar ones!
I learned what an "arm bar" is!
I love this place I wanted to wait a couple months before leaving a truthful review been here about 4 months now my skills have improved the coaches are amazing they really care about everyone's improvement and it's not just the coaches that are helpful the students are as well I don't see myself ever leaving this place
This is a fantastic gym run by fantastic people.
From the day I stepped foot on the mat here at 10th Planet Portland it felt like home. I can't express enough the gratitude that comes from within this place and they treat every person the same, like family, from the highest black belt to the newest member.
The first step (or day) is always the beginning of a long journey. Absolutely was kind and considered a lot of factors that I was new. Be honest, not tough.
Great friendly personable people, felt like home, good music. Clean mats. Safe.
Best jiujitsu school in Portland, hands down. Knowledgeable and friendly instructors who excel in keeping their students motivated and making them feel like part of the 10P family. Also, the jiujitsu here is as beautifuI as the gym itself. I will miss this crew and am looking forward to returning again one day.
Been training here for the last 4+ years, and have been loving it. The instruction is world class. The atmosphere and community is the best I have seen in any martial arts gym. Everyone is friendly and instructors are great with kids and adults alike. The gym is very open minded, and we have an awesome open mat that is open to anyone that wants to come down for some grappling/rolls. I have trained at other gyms and visited other schools, but will be here for years to come.
I have a lot of respect for this crew. Instructors are great and they teach you how to choke people. Can't beat that.
Been coming to the morning fundementals class for about 4 weeks now. Great format for a beginner of a warmup, then drills, then optional rolling. Every 2 weeks there is a new focus and it really feels well structured. Mikey the coach is great and everyone there is friendly and looking to learn and have a good time. Recommend!
Awesome place. This is my very first jiu jitsu gym and I'm glad I chose this one. I've never trained jiu jitsu before and it is great! Rules are on the wall, and people help you out along the way with everything. Everybody is super friendly and will help each other train.
The sense of community that this place provides is seriously beyond top notch. I've been in and out for a few years now due to injuries and other unforseen circumstances, and there is always a warm welcome upon my return. Not only that, but it's the perfect place for bjj newcomers. I've been to a few other bjj gyms in the last decade and none of them even come close to 10th Planet Portland. Most places you go to will just have you jump into class even if you've never done it before. 10th planet has a full program for those that are new to bjj that will set you up with all of the fundamentals. I've gone through that program almost twice now, and my wife has done it once. It's awesome and both coaches that teach it are straight up rad dudes. My wife also goes to the all women's class sometimes and says that it's super fun and welcoming. Jiu Jitsu/MMA gyms can be intimidating to walk into, but Sam, Phil, Kevin, Mikey, and all the other coaches are some of the nicest people I've ever met period, let alone for a gym.
Coming from a wrestling background, I found 10th planet Portland the best transition into jiu jitsu. I often refer to that place as my church because the community is so strong and the instructors genuinely care about their students. If you are searching for a school, come try out 10th planet Portland. Their unorthodox jiu jitsu will blow your mind!
Training with 10p since 2013, good people
I train in LA but ten p is awesome and their game is strong. You’ll up your game by leaps and bounds. There are tons of women at 10p and that’s not typical for other studios. I’m commenting cause Pete’s a hater who just doesn’t like 10p for some reason and is trying to troll who knows but 10p is AWESOME ❤️
I moved to Portland 2 months ago and I checked out classes at a few of the local schools. 10th Planet was hands down the cleanest of all of them. The people on the mats had no egos and were super welcoming.Very impressed with Phil's classes during the day I see technique I've never seen before in almost every class.
Top level instructors and a very friendly atmosphere!
Amazing, helpful teachers in an awesome space.
As a beginner, I was nervous to start, but this place changed everything! For starters, the prices are right, the place is SUPER hygienic, and they have showers which are regularily maintained and kept stocked with soaps, shampoos, new towells, you name it! The coaching is so hands-on! Sam is the coach of my classes, and he pays amazingly close attention to everybody, ensuring that we learn safety every step of the way! He doesn't leave anyone behind either. I previously trained BJJ where I was injured twice, overcharged, and wasn't acknowledged... Speaking of which, you are greeted and welcomed every day, and are to thank every one of your team mates at the end of class! Not too many warmups, which would make stronger athletes, but atleast you don't have to worry about dying your first day! This place is amazing!!! Check it out!!!
They set a great atmosphere at 10th Planet. The instruction was top notch with detail but still done in a way easy to understand. Everyone was friendly and willing to roll after instruction.
I stopped by the Friday open mat as a traveller and was welcomed by Sam who answered any questions. Rolled for almost 2 hours with some skilled gentlemen and ladies and loved it. Very welcoming, very good vibes, very nice facility. If I lived in town, I'd seek to train here, and if I'm passing through town again, I'll try to stop by again. Highly recommended. Big thanks.
10th Planet PDX is a great school! High level instructors, great camaraderie between everyone, beautiful facility and lots of representation and support at local and national competitions. Highly recommended
Nathan and Phil both have HIGH level Jiu Jitsu and excellent teachers. They've also built an amazing community full of very cool people who really support and look after each other. 10th Planet Portland is a very special place. I highly recommend anyone looking to learn Jiu Jitsu look no further.
There are four things I was looking for in a gym. And I found them all at 10th Planet Portland. Level of skill - At 10th Planet Portland they offer three levels of classes taught by friendly and knowledgeable instructors. They teach Fundamentals to high level moves in a way that anyone can pick up in the first class. I feel like I'm learning the best type of Jiu Jitsu from the highest level of instructors. Not only that but they really CARE if you are learning. They give up their personal time to coach students at competitions and come in outside of class, open mat for instance, to help students drill. Welcoming and friendly team atmosphere-- The 10th planet team has a way of making you feel like you're a part of an extended family. Welcoming, kind and fun, you will find the teachers and team to be approachable and caring. The people here really make a difference. You won't find a better group of people. Cleanliness & Safety- I love that the instructors frequently sanitize the mat and keep a foot cleaning station at the entrance. They stay close around new students and teach clear concise and slow movements to new learners to promote safety. Affordability- The high level of instruction and ability to take classes almost any day of the week make classes at 10th plant Portland the best value of anywhere in the city. I have been to other gyms and I really feel like none of them come close to comparing to 10th Planet Portland. I know I can train here to become the best I can be and I will be supported the whole way. 10th Planet Portland is home
I just moved to the Portland area and tried the fundamentals class at 10th planet with Matt as the instructor. He was very easy going and a great teacher. The vibe in class is super chill and welcoming. Phill and Nate were also very friendly and introduced themselves to all the new people in class. They have established a great community in SE. I highly recommend 10th planet to anyone trying to get into jiu jitsu.
Fabulous coaches. Friendly atmosphere. A truly effective training system. These guys and gals are Real trailblazers in the Jiu jitsu game! My game has been elevated after only a few months. This is me expressing my sincere gratitude for Phil, Nathan and all the other training partners and legit martial artists at 10th planet Portland. Thank you!!!!
Such a great place to train! Very friendly atmosphere; knowledgeable and approachable coaches. Focuses on connection between mind and body. Excellent place to learn jiu jitsu.
If you're looking for a BJJ school for your child to learn at, this is not the place. Rough crowd.
