Great place for beginners and those who have trained for awhile
I have trained with Josh for the whole 12 years I have been training. Josh is an excellent instructor and has created a great environment for learning at Eastside Grappling. The students and other instructors are friendly and welcoming. Great place to train, learn, and have fun.
Great training environment with the best coaches and training partners!
Great gym. Excellent training partners, plus Josh is ALWAYS ready and available to help, show better techniques, and offer advice. I love training here.
I have been training here for years. First started coming to the open mats on Sundays a few years ago and everyone was very welcoming. Started training here just after the pandemic. I train at the noon class on mon, wed, and Friday usually and it’s great. The other team mates are great training partners and coach Josh gives great instruction at the end of class. Highly recommend this gym.
I’ve been training here for about 5 years. Good training partners and some tough rounds. Josh has been a great instructor with his unique insight into BJJ.
With the exception of a year in Korea and a couple of years in Denver, I've been training Jiu Jitsu in the Portland area for over 12 years. I've seen a lot while training at various gyms and I've found myself at Eastside since moving back to Portland. It's a really welcoming place full of friendly people and good, hard training. The thing I love most is that there's no bullshit, no drama, no cliques, and no forced formality, like bowing to enter/leave the mats or long (and useless) warmups that eat up class. It's just good grappling. Definitely check it out if you're looking for a fun place to train.
Eastside is a great environment to learn and practice. I've had the best time learning from Josh and my training partners. Everyone is supportive and helpful.
This is THE place to go to for jiu-jitsu. I’ve been going here for about a year now and it’s the best decision I’ve made in my jiu-jitsu journey. The instruction is top tier, the amount of live rounds you get is insane, and the culture is laid back and friendly.
Love this gym. I’ve been training here for a little more than 2 years. Fantastic coaching, great mat culture, lovely training partners and awesome facilities.
Great training. Great atmosphere. Welcoming environment.
I have trained for over 10 years and had the opportunity to learn from instructors with amazing pedigrees throughout the US. I am fortunate to learn from Josh Botkin and from my fellow training partners and friends. Josh excels at being both technical and conceptual with his instruction. He can guide advanced players with technical insight and demanding training, but also understands that new people need a softer entrance into an intimidating sport/martial art. Josh also goes to every competition that has an Eastside competitor. That is not something that is universally practiced by coaches. The people here are very friendly and the gym is safe and accommodating for people with all different goals (casual hobby, competition, exercise, etc.). Come check out Eastside, whether new to jiu jitsu, or experienced!
Eastside Grappling is a fantastic gym to learn jiu jitsu at. Having had zero grappling experience when I joined a little more than a year ago, I can vouch for the welcoming and conscientious community that will always keep you feeling safe on the mat, while still pushing you to become the best grappler you can be. There are some elite athletes at this gym that are simultaneously some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of training with. The gym maintains both a fun, relaxed environment and a high degree of excellency when it comes to training hard. Try a free week, no one will pressure you into the commitment of joining, but it could easily change your life for the better like it did for me.
I have been training at Eastside Grappling since 2017 and have had the privilege of watching the gym grow and evolve. It has personally given me a community I could not imagine my life without. You will have the opportunity to wrestle with and get immediate feedback from the head coach. Josh Botkin; owner, black belt, and head coach is detailed, and direct with instruction. If you’re new to the sport or looking for a new gym, come check out the gym for a week and see if it’s the place for you.
If you want to learn jiu jitsu from an engaging and knowledgeable coach with friendly and encouraging people then I recommend checking out Eastside Grappling. I like that they offer a free trial week so there's no pressure to sign up immediately.
I’ve had several experiences here, I try to visit for a class when I’m in town. This is a genuine, home grown Portland jiu jitsu school with awesome teachers, awesome students (I roll with random people and always a good experience), and amazing beautiful facility. Real Portland vibe, hope everyone gets to enjoy this place for a long time.
I've trained with Josh for years- he is the man. Gym is in a chill spot and the remodeling looks great. Cant beat it.
Awesome awesome place. Everyone is extremely welcoming, and Josh is pretty freaking cool 🤙 the new location is really nice (old expanded upstairs location) looking forward to representing the team when it comes time for me to compete again.
Wonderful environment with friendly people. I was in town for a conference and so happy to stop by Thanks again!
Great instruction. So much focus on the fine details that can make or break a position. People are fun and down to earth. Might be hard to find, but worth the search
The best basement jiu-jitsu anywhere.
I recently attended an open gym hosted by Mike, owner and trainer, and had a great experience. The gym is equipped with everything you can imagine (barbells, free weights, crossfit style racks, gymnastic rings, boxes...the list goes on!). Mike lead the group through some great instruction with progressions for both beginner and advanced students. I highly recommend Eastside Strength and Performance for anyone eager to learn. Thank you Mike!
Top notch instruction. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
Great and friendly place to learn and work out couldn't have had a better time oss
One of the best places to learn Jiu Jistu in Portland. While the gym can be a bit hard to find at first, it's definitely worth it. Class sizes are small, ensuring lots of individual attention. The group of people that train here are all friendly, fun, competitive and want to help you become a better grappler. Josh Botkin's teaching style is fun and his attention to detail is amazing. I always learn something new and have a great time at every class.
