Gentle Arts Jiu Jitsu
I’ve been training at Gentle Arts for the past three years, and my 4-year-old son has been training here for the last two. I’m a black belt, and he’s just starting out, and it’s been an amazing experience for both of us. What really sets Gentle Arts apart is the culture. Led by our Professor, Franscico, it’s welcoming, respectful, and genuinely feels like a community. I’ve made great friends here, and it’s a place where people of all levels support each other on and off the mats. I can’t recommend Gentle Arts enough—for adults, kids, beginners, or experienced practitioners. It’s a special place with great people and an environment that keeps you coming back.
Posted 8 months agoI’ve been training Jiu-Jitsu for over 10 years of my life and I’ve had the chance to train with some of the best in the world and some great competitors, but few people can compete so good and be able to be such a good professor. Francisco is a great coach and world class athlete bringing always the best energy on the mats and making sure everyone is having a blast 🙌. Great Family environment if you’re trying to get a hobby with your Family and also if you’re trying to better in the competition aspect this is the place to be.
Posted 1 year agoGentle Arts Jiu Jitsu has been an incredible place for both me and my daughter. She started training here at just 5 years old, and I’ve been training for over 3 years myself. Professor Sinistro is the heart of the academy—he’s patient, fair, and brings a consistently positive energy to every class. He pays attention to every detail, whether it’s helping a student fine-tune a technique or making sure the class runs smoothly. His care and dedication to each student, no matter their age or experience level, truly sets him apart. We’re proud to be part of the Gentle Arts family!
Posted 1 year agoI’ve been training with Professor Francisco Iturralde at Gentle Arts Jiu-Jitsu Academy since 2011. He is an outstanding instructor. Extremely professional, dedicated to his students, and deeply involved in the community. His passion for teaching shows in every class, and he creates a welcoming, respectful environment for everyone. More than just a great coach, he’s also a great friend. I highly recommend this academy to anyone looking to learn Jiu-Jitsu the right way.
Posted 1 year agoI have been training at Gentle Arts JiuJitsu for nearly 3 years under Prof. Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde. I find Francisco to be a kind, caring, and highly capable instructor. He purposefully maintains a safe environment that caters to hobbyists and competitors alike. The community of fellow students are welcoming, and hard working. Having moved to San Diego to train Jiu Jitsu I visited and trained at a few academies before finding my home at Gentle Arts. Whether you have goals as a competitor or non competitor there is a place for those wanting to practice the Gentle Art.
Posted 1 year agoTraining under Sinistro has significantly enriched my jiu-jitsu journey, introducing me to diverse techniques that have profoundly influenced my personal style. Training alongside esteemed practitioners like Mike Rodriguez, Rene, Johnny Tama, Sinistro’s brother Juan,Chris Wood, and Clark Gracie has further deepened my appreciation for the art. The caliber of individuals that Sinistro surrounds himself with epitomizes excellence in jiu-jitsu. His commitment to maintaining a safe and clean training environment is evident, aligning with the broader martial arts community’s emphasis on hygiene to prevent infections and ensure a positive experience for all practitioners. Currently, at my third gym, I find that while connections are being made, the training environment and camaraderie differ from those cultivated under Sinistro’s mentorship.
I have been training with Prof. Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde at Gentle Arts for almost 3yrs. It isn't often someone has the opportunity to train with and learn from such an exceptional athlete and competitor. The instruction Sinistro provides and the community he has created are amazing. Everyone's athletic and BJJ journey is different and he encourages and allows each of us to enjoy and get the most of that journey. Highly recommended and greatly appreciated.
sinistro is one of the greatest athletes of his generation and has helped the ecuadorean community be inspired to follow the jiu jitsu dream
Gentle Arts Jiu-Jitsu is an absolute gem in the martial arts community! From the moment I stepped into their dojo, I felt welcomed and embraced by their supportive and inclusive atmosphere. The instructors are not only highly skilled and knowledgeable but also incredibly passionate about sharing their expertise with students of all levels. What sets Gentle Arts apart is their emphasis on technique, discipline, and respect, creating an environment where everyone can learn and grow at their own pace. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced practitioner, you'll find personalized instruction tailored to your individual goals and abilities. The sense of camaraderie among students is truly inspiring, fostering a sense of community and mutual encouragement that extends beyond the mat. I've gained not only valuable self-defense skills but also lifelong friendships through my training at Gentle Arts. I wholeheartedly recommend Gentle Arts Jiu-Jitsu to anyone looking to embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth through martial arts. Sinistro's dedication to excellence and commitment to his students' success make them truly exceptional. oss
Gentle Arts and Prof. Iturralde are the best! A super warm, friendly, and cheerful environment with awesome highly detailed instruction from a world class competitor! The other students that attend class were extremely welcoming and helpful from day one. Started BJJ back in grad school but stopped >20 years ago. Was really fortunate to be introduced to Gentle Arts by a close friend and am very grateful for all of my positive experiences here!
My 6-year-old has been practicing at Gentle Arts Jiu Jitsu Studio for almost one year. I can confidently say it has been an exceptional experience for both of us. Professor Francisco is not only a highly skilled practitioner but also incredibly patient and nurturing with the young ones. The environment focuses on positive reinforcement and allows kids to feel safe to explore and learn. The curriculum is well-structured and age-appropriate, catering to the unique needs and abilities of young learners. Through fun and engaging activities, kids not only learn self-defense techniques but also valuable life skills such as focus, teamwork, and problem-solving. Moreover, the sense of community is truly remarkable. Parents and students alike are welcomed with open arms, creating a supportive network that extends beyond the studio walls.
I cannot recommend Gentle Arts enough for parents looking to enroll their children in jiu-jitsu classes. My daughter has been attending classes here for several years and she has gained so much confidence, focus, and technique. Professor Francisco is not only a skilled jiu-jitsu coach (and an awesome athlete) but also amazing with kids. He is patient, encouraging, and really know how to make learning fun. Additionally, he fosters a sense of community among families, organizing activities such as bike rides, beach days, and BBQs. This inclusive approach enhances the overall experience, creating a supportive network among students' families. The studio itself is clean, well-maintained, and provides a safe environment for kids to learn and grow. They offer a variety of class times to fit all schedules. We are so grateful to have found this studio!
Gentle Arts is a great place to train jiu jistu in a safe and fun environment, for all ages. Francisco fosters a tight-knit community around Gentle Arts so that it represents far more than merely a place to learn jiu jitsu. There is a real "family" feel to the culture of Gentle Arts.
Best place I’ve ever trained. Welcoming community, World Class instructors 🥇 , helpful higher belts who want you to advance, technical rolls, great for kids. Can’t say enough. 🤙🏽
Great gym experience. The professor, Francisco, is a world class teacher and fantastic person. This gym is friendly and not an intimidating place for new clients. Everyone is helpful and the camaraderie is strong
Having trained at many gyms across the globe and being a recent transplant to San Diego, it's not easy to find a place that feels like home. Yet, from the moment I stepped into Gentle Arts, thanks to Coach Sinistro, I knew I'd found somewhere special. Sinistro is not just a coach; he's a mentor whose welcoming nature, technical prowess, and passion for Jiu Jitsu shine through in every session. His ability to create a warm, inclusive environment is unparalleled. What makes Gentle Arts even more special is its kids' classes. As a parent, watching my 4-year-olds grow in confidence, skill, and love for Jiu Jitsu has been nothing short of remarkable. They eagerly anticipate each class, and seeing their progress has been incredibly rewarding. Since joining, I've been welcomed into more than just a gym - I've become part of a community. The range of talent here is incredible, catering to everyone from top competitors to those who enjoy Jiu Jitsu as a hobby. The respect and camaraderie among everyone I’ve met and trained with extends beyond the mats. It's led to forming great new friendships — people with whom we share regular family dinners, celebrate at our children's birthday parties, and has embedded me into the local community in ways I never expected. I really can’t say enough about what a great spot this is!
I have been training at Gentle Arts JiuJitsu for nearly a year under Prof. Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde. Gentle Arts Jiu-Jitsu is the ideal destination for those seeking high-quality Jiu-Jitsu training. Sinistro Iturralde stands out as one of the top professionals in the field, well-known within the global Jiu-Jitsu community. The gym boasts an incredible atmosphere where everyone is respectful, fostering a positive and welcoming vibe. I've been training with Sinistro for almost two years now, and my Jiu-Jitsu skills have rapidly improved, making me feel better every day. With a variety of classes offered at different times, training here is both convenient and accessible. Oss!
Francisco has created the rare combination of an inclusive environment, fun culture and high level instruction. This is THE place for anyone interested in exploring jiu jitsu!
I’ve been training with Professor Francisco since I moved to north county 3 years ago. I’ve enjoyed excellent technical instruction here and Francisco fosters a welcoming and family-friendly community. There is a wide range of abilities and skills here and former world champions and top-ranked competitors are often training or teaching. It takes a special instructor to be able to cater to both beginners and true experts and Francisco does that extremely well. I can’t recommend this gym and this team enough - if you’re curious about jiu jitsu this is the place!
I was invited to check out Gentle Arts from a friend. A brother veteran and former co-worker who's opinion is valued. I was welcomed, guided, and have never once felt like I was on the mats with anyone who as trying to "win" or hurt anyone they were sparring with. Everyone is caring and cautious and looks out for the health, welfare, and limitations of each member of the studio. I've had the good fortune to participate in special events with BJJ Royalty Like Clark Gracie. All this under the tutelage of Professor Francisco 'Sinistro' Iturralde and assisted often with amazing Black Belts June An, Ken, Mike and the family of Gentle Arts. Oss!
I've been going here for 2.5 years and I can say that this is an excellent BJJ school. Technical skills and respect for your fellow students are the standard. Prof. Sinistro is an absolute gem. Come to learn more about BJJ and yourself.
Professor Francisco does such an amazing jobs with the kids. He teaches them discipline, manners, respect, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! Most importantly, the kids have so much fun. By far the best Jiu Jitsu gym in the area for kids.
Very pleased with the instruction at this school! The professor pays great attention to detail and my kids are loving it!
Great training here in Encinitas! Sinistro is phenomenal
I first met Francisco in 2011/2012, around that time in Ecuador. I have only the best things to say about the man. He is an outstanding leader, friend, and mentor to many. Not only does he excel at his craft and in competition, but he is a phenomenal instructor as well. I hope to visit this academy someday soon!
We absolutely love that we found Gentle Arts and Professor Francisco. Our son Jack loves going 3x a week. Instruction is thoughtful and progressive and we love seeing our son learn so quickly. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Professor maintains great control over the kids class but with a kind and respectful manner. This studio is truly a gem in Encinitas.
Best place to train in Encinitas! Great vibes, great instruction, place is like family.
My 8-year-old son started Gentle Arts in March or April of 2021. He had no prior experience. He loved it! Professor is a patient, kind, motivated, caring, professional and disciplined teacher. He takes his time with each student. My son has excelled over the months, he sleeps better, he is focused and we could not be prouder. All the students are a joy to watch. Gentle Arts has become a second family. My husband and oldest son have joined as well. We feel blessed and proud to a part of this great place!
If you are considering training in Jiu Jitsu I highly recommend Gentle Arts Academy!! Instructor and 5 time world campion Francisco "Sinistro" Iturralde is second to none. His focus on details and proper technique elevate your game quickly while maintaining a fun environment. Professor Sinistro is committed to building family through events such as; bicycle rides, run/walks, picnics and beach clean up activities for all ages. The academy offers a divers schedule for training at all levels and features guest instructors periodically.
As a parent, there is nothing more exciting as when your child looks forward to training. We were blessed to be Sinistro’s (Professor’s) first youth students and have watched the class grow so quickly. The children look up to and learn so much from training, including mentorship, humility, confidence and discipline. They do not like to miss a class as they strive for stripes on their belt. Professor is gentle and kind while commanding attention and action from the students. We are so grateful to be part of this school.
If you are interested in starting Jiu Jitsu, Gentle Arts is the place to go. From the moment you walk in the door you’ll find the atmosphere friendly and welcoming. Sinistro’s classes and teachings are excellent. He communicates the details in way that are easy to understand and spends time with each student to reinforce the techniques. All the programs (kids, teens and adults) are great for getting in shape and building confidence. Sinistro is excellent with kids and teens. It’s amazing watching how fast everyone learns. Many of us have doubts, too old, out of shape, physical limitations etc. and are afraid to start. Myself included. Sinistro is understanding and encourages you to only do what you physically can. Come train and have fun!
Gentle Arts is my favorite jiu jitsu gym in San Diego. Francisco is extremely patient, professional, and a world class instructor/competitor. No matter your age or skill level, Gentle Arts will feel like home after your first visit, I promise!
Professor "Sinistro" Iturralde provides great quality jiu jistu instruction with high emphasis on details and techniques. He has also created positive gym atmosphere that always encourages you to improve yourself. He also incorporates stretching before and after training, which I find to be very relaxing and also helps in recovery. Everyone at the gym is always willing to share their knowledge and always motivates one another. I have met a ton of amazing friends at the academy and I always look forward to going to class everyday! I have only been training at Gentle Arts for a couple of months (without prior knowledge to jiu jitsu or any martial arts) and I can already notice a lot of improvements in my game. Training at Gentle Arts is always fun and I would highly recommend anyone of any age group and experience to check out the academy!
I’ve been training at gentle arts now for about eight months. I am so impressed by the detail of the instruction and professionalism of the coach and team! There is lots of individualized instruction and plenty of rolls with professor “ Sinistro “. He’s always willing to answer questions and help you work on things are struggling with. I don’t feel “ lost in the crowd”. I no longer have ” jiu Jitsu anxiety ”. I know what to expect every time I go and I know he is always right there to help. I couldn’t say enough good things about my experience with the school. Thanks professor!!!
Gentle Arts Jiu Jitsu is amazing! Starting Jiu Jitsu can be scary, especially in your 30’s! I am not an aggressive person, nor did I have any experience in any combat sport/martial arts of any kind before starting Jiu Jitsu. On my first day training at Gentle Arts, I was made to feel right at home. The instructor and other students were quick to help me feel like part of the team. The instructor is kind and very knowledgeable. Not only is Professor Sinistro an incredible teacher, but an accomplished competitor as well. I am so glad I jumped out of my comfort zone and started training Jiu Jitsu. Not only has it changed my life physically (lost 30lbs), but also my perspective on everyday challenges. I am more resilient and creative in how I deal with the obstacles life throws at me. I recommend Jiu Jitsu to anyone especially at Gentle Arts Jiu Jitsu. Come join the team! :)
I’m a 74 year old Japanese American trained martial arts for 60 years. Started to learn the jiujitsu after retirement at 62. In my humble opinion it is rare for a great competitor to be a great instructor. Prof Sinistro is exactly that. I am fortunate to have him as my jiujitsu teacher. His technical skills and the attention to details really standout. AND he makes the training fun.
Francisco Iturralde is one of the best instructors there is in the JJ community; his passion and dedication for his student is second to none, more than 15 years of experience in martial arts. He helped me grow up as a person and as jiujitsu practitioner.
Professor Francisco Iturralde is a decorated competitor and practitioner. His ability to communicate and convey to his students techniques allows you to easily grasp the art improving your game and shortening your learning curve a lot sooner than most, this is high value! Post workout, stretching is important and key to a long healthy life on and off the mats. Francisco’s expertise in yoga definitely solidifies the quality of his teachings. Don’t waste anymore time, do yourself a favor go in and give it a try, you’ll thank your younger self later!
This is an amazing school. Sinistro made me feel very welcome from the moment I stepped into the door. I trained and learned a ton on the first day. The mats where very clean and no egos that made me feel intimidated. If you are looking to start your Journy in jiu jitsu and you live in the area I Recommend this school.
You’ll find nothing but top shelf Jiu Jitsu at Gentle Arts. Professor Fransisco is a world renowned instructor and black belt competitor. He’s created a beautiful academy with a fun, family atmosphere. If you’re reading this considering if you should give it a shot, I assure you it will be one of the best choices you’ve ever made!!!
Great and detailed instruction. I've been learning from Sinistro for years. A great person on and off the mats!
One of the best Bjj profesors, he is incredibly clear in his explanations, extremely detailed, and a very nice and easy going person, if I was leaving near his academy I would definitely be training in there👌🏽🔥
Professor “Sinistro” Iturralde is extremely thoughtful and patient with his instruction. He’s created a friendly environment of abundance where everyone is committed to improvement. True to the name, his style is smooth and gentle, with an emphasis on technique over strength, and practical! I also love the Yoga classes to complement the JiuJitsu training. Most importantly we have fun!
