We live right near the center. It's certainly a fun looking place although we have not participated yet. I only came to say it's run by decent people. They are good, respectful, neighbors to have.
Awesome place to learn to fight with a sword.
This is the best historical martial arts club in Pennsylvania. The diversity of what's available here combined with top notch practical self defense make this group a must see for anyone interested in these topics. The instructors here have a wide range of martial arts backgrounds and a true passion for history.
These folks are great and very welcoming! It's HEMA with a huge sense of their community and members! The folks training go around and provide individual instruction. There are at least 4 trainers in the session checking out your technique and providing valuable feedback. I couldn't be more impressed!
Real historical fencing. Boxing and catch wrestling.
The people are genuine and fun. The teachers are professional and talented. HEMA is a great community and this is the place to be.
I got ripped within weeks. Plus everyone is super friendly.
Just a chill hang and an awesome place to exercise, learn martial arts, history, AND SWORDS. This is sincerely the most fun I've ever had exercising. A++ do recommend.
I began taking classes at Broken Plow in the spring of 2016. As someone with decades of prior experience in teaching but zero in martial arts (or athletic endeavors in general, to be honest), I can attest to the quality of this school. In the time that I’ve been training with them, I have become a competent fighter and my overall fitness has improved drastically. The curriculum for the intro classes is particularly well-crafted, and they routinely review and update all their lessons based on best practices in HEMA. Beyond the high quality of instruction, the community at Broken Plow is warm and inclusive, disciplined but irreverent, and figures prominently in both the Pittsburgh area and the international scene. If, like me, you’ve always wanted to learn how to swing a sword but didn’t know where to start – this is the place! Pictured: me @ Broken Plow -- come say hi!
Simply the place to learn swords, make good friends and fight. No place else in the Pittsburg area can come close.
I have only taken a few longsword classes; but I am already hooked. Chuck, the other instructors, and even those in the advanced classes are so helpful and supportive. It is a great environment and they are so welcoming of new people. You would be silly not to be a member of Plow.
I have been going here since 2017 and it has been unquestionably one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. Coming from a martial arts background, I found the classes and instructors to be extremely thoughtful and knowledgeable about the material, especially as it relates to a developing field. The community aspect of the club can not be overstated. It is an extremely welcoming and caring group of people who make you feel like family from day 1.
Started going here to learn more about HEMA to help a club that me and some friends recently started up back home. Now I find myself making a trip up here once a week despite living 2 hours away. The trips and the classes have been more than worth it. Knowledgeable, patient, and professional instructors that make the students feel welcomed. Clean, spacious facility with plenty of gear. I learn something new every class and feel challenged while doing so. I recomend this place to anyone in the Pittsburgh area or anyone considering traveling for HEMA lessons.
I've been training here for a year and while I'm not the best student - they're an amazing organization. They literally helped out a family in Creighton whose house burned down on Christmas by hosting a Yule Ball for the kids in conjuction with the rest of the Community.
This is such a great group of people! I've been attending Plow for 2 years and I've met some great friends here! Not only are the people super welcoming and awesome, they are also extremely knowledgeable when it comes to HEMA. The instructors challenges us both physically and mentally but we also have a ton of fun. They teach the fundamentals so you're just not swinging a weapon around hurting yourself or others. Everyone here will take the time to make sure you are doing it correctly and safely. Best decision I made was joining this awesome group of people!
I've been training with Broken Plow since February 2017. I can't imagine a more inviting marital art or marital arts community. Since the first week it's seemed more like being invited to a family than just some place that takes your money and puts you through some drills. I've lost weight, I'm in better shape, and most importantly I've got to play with swords. It's an amazing school staffed by incredible people.
The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable, while still being humble. They have no problem answering as many questions as you have and take the time to make sure that everyone feels comfortable, personally. The place feels more like a community than a class. There is loaner gear on site as well as a water jug. There is also plenty of easy parking.
