Trying to find a place to do martial arts in Kansas City? At Aplomb Martial Arts, we have classes for everyone!
Great place for kids with trauma backgrounds! They adapt to each children learning needs and style.
My child has learned more than martial arts while participating in group and private lessons! I am impressed in behaviors, levels of emotional control in his self awareness, and discipline! I’m beyond thankful!
My daughter has been attending for almost 3 years! It has boost her confidence in the most amazing ways possible. Sensei Gary's energy is infectious and he is a wonderful role model to all who enter his orbit.
We have been going Aplomb for over a year now. Sensei Gary is a great leader and really helps to develop the growth of all the kid ninjas.
10 months ago I decided to be more active without just doing the gym. I was wary to go because of my bad knees. I gave it a couple months to see if the training would increase my strength. I do not regret it one bit. Sensai Gary is an amazing human. Even after moving 15 minutes further from the dojo, I drive there 3 times a week because the energy in the dojo is amazing. Give the free class a try. You will not be dissapointed.
If you're looking for a top-notch martial arts studio that fosters discipline, confidence, and personal growth, Aplomb Martial Arts is the place to be. Located in a welcoming environment, this Kempo studio offers something for everyone, from young children to adults of all ages. One of the studio's biggest assets is Sensei Gary, who is nothing short of amazing. His passion for martial arts shines through in every class. He's energetic, encouraging, and has a unique ability to connect with his students, particularly kids. His patient and kind approach makes even the youngest beginners feel confident and excited to learn. Whether your child is shy or bouncing off the walls, Sensei Gary knows exactly how to guide them in the right direction, helping them grow not just in their martial arts skills, but also in their self-esteem and focus. I can't recommend this studio enough, especially if you're looking for a program that will engage your child and teach them valuable life lessons along the way. Thank you Sensei Gary and the AMA crew!
My son has been going here for 9+ months and has seen meaningful, significant transformation. Being part of the team and being challenged to break down his barriers has been incredibly affirming for him and our family. I love that this group takes training seriously, but not themselves. Sensei Gary is intense but thoughtful and very funny, and understands that every child needs to grow in their own way. Instruction includes up to 3 classes a week which is quite a lot for what is normally offered. THIS IS THE PLACE to learn martial arts in the area. Thank you Sensei Gary and all the other instructors for all you do!
I decided to try a free class two years ago in an effort to get out of the house and learn methods to defend myself. In the beginning, I was frustrated at how uncoordinated, weak, and scared I was. But all the while, I was learning discipline that urged be to keep going. I've challenged my limits and come out a new person. Earning each belt has felt like badge of honor and I have shown myself time and time again that all along I have been so much stronger than I gave myself credit for. Aplomb is my community and I am proud to say that anyone would fit into it. It does not matter your age (we have teens to folks in their 70s), your size, your experience, or your purpose. You are welcome here! Where power meets discipline and fear meets its end.
It’s been great watching my daughter interact with all the sensi. She enjoys the lessons and the encouragement she receives. She shows up to every class ready to learn. Sensi Gary is an amazing instructor. If you want confidence and strength and encouragement this is the place to go
Awesome Dojo my son loves it. Sensei Gary is great with the kids and all the teachers are wonderful. My son is learning a lot and it makes me proud to take him to AMA lenexa
My three granddaughters and I have been a part of the Aplomb Lenexa dojo for almost 5 years. We have tested together, cheered each other on in tournaments and encouraged each other to push through the tough moments. We are so lucky to be in an environment that encourages personal growth and provides a safe nurturing space to reach and exceed goals. We are physically stronger and confident in our ever growing skills. Sensei Gary is phenomenal.
We love and appreciate this Dojo and the Senseis more than we can express in words! Our son joined about 4 months ago and we have already seen him blossom in many ways. Not only is he becoming an amazing ninja, he is developing important life skills. Our little man has some special needs and requires some extra help and patience. Sensei Gary has always made sure to take the time to adjust to our son's needs so that he can thrive and maintain a healthy self esteem. We love and appreciate all the Senseis for keeping the Dojo a fun, happy, healthy and all inclusive space for all to succeed in!
The masters, Sensei Gary, sensei Olivia, sensei Taylor, and sensei Sarah are all amazing and work hard to make sure our son has the discipline and knowledge to succeed in class and life. Can't say enough good things.
Sensei Gary has been awesome in helping our family reach goals! We initially just had our oldest son in a class to help with some attention and discipline, eventually it turned into both of us parents and 2 of our 3 kids involved (youngest is just waiting to be big enough). This is a great place with an amazing atmosphere and a fun way to get exercise and build community!
We had a amazing time with our child here. Such a great activity for children and outstanding employees
Sensai Gary is the best! This Dojo is so welcoming and easy to feel comfortable learning. We are so glad we found this dojo. Fully recommend
This Dojo is great with kids and adults! Even if you have a disability they will work with you!
My daughter has been practicing martial Arts at this Dojo for over two years. Sensi Gary is great and so are Sensi Taylor and Sensi Olivia.
It's been an incredible experience training under Sensei Gary at AMA. I've gained much more than I ever expected, including a fun and supportive karate family that challenges and pushes me to be better. I've had the opportunity to learn self-defense, get into better shape, inprove my balance/endurance/flexibility, and make lots of great friends here!
We have been going to aplomb for over a year. Sensei Gary is an excellent teacher who values and respects each family and the students that attend. My daughter has grown so much here!
The environment is amazing. Sensei Gary is so fun and makes everyone laugh, it's great for all ages. I have been doing this for almost 2 years now and it has improved my life in so many ways. You never leave un-happy and the Dojo has almost became my second home
I’ve been going to the AMA Lenexa dojo for about 4 years. The dojo is like a second home to me. The instructors are kind and patient. I’ve gained confidence and self-control from being taught here. I've lost weight while exercising and learning martial arts and my body feels phenomenal! All of the hard work to get here leaves me proud of myself and feeling good in life.
Absolutely love this Dojo! Sensei Gary has helped my sons behavior and my daughters confidence.
Aplomb Martial Arts is AWESOME! They are wonderful with the students and have created a great atmosphere. I highly recommend Aplomb!
Come and get a great workout an build your self confidence! I love being apart of aplomb martial arts! Everyone is so nice and encouraging, I have been so much happier and healthier since I joined. My confidence has gone way up and I love that I know some self defense. Sensi Gary is a really fun and very skilled instructor. 10/10 I recommend. Anyone can do martial arts!
Sensei Gary is wonderful with the kids. It's a great way to learn discipline.
I was so impressed with the free introductory class for my two boys (5 & 7 yrs old) that I decided to join as well. Now 6 months later, we are all 3 really enjoying the lessons every week. Sensei Gary is fantastic with the kids, and really good with adults, teaching everything from balance, strength, agility, endurance, and self defense, but most importantly respect and self confidence. Lessons learned can be applied to all aspects of life and I would highly recommend this to anyone young and old. 15 month update: The boys have earned their purple belts, and I have noticed improvements in their other sports (track/cross-country and basketball). For me, my strength and flexibility has greatly improved, but best of all I have new friends who support and help push each other to improve themselves every week. Would still highly recommend.
I’ve been taking classes at AMA Lenexa for just over a year. The classes are fun, challenging, and every class is something new. Sensei Gary is a wonderful instructor who builds confidence in every student. I am thrilled with my progress since joining, and l’m looking forward to many more years at AMA.
Sensei Gary is really nice to his students and as a person and all his students come into his dojo ready to get exercise and have fun-Nolan Israel
A wealth of knowledge, self defense & great workout;)
Sensei Gary is amazing with our kids! Our son has ADHD and almost immediately we could see a change in him. He improved his listening and focus and developed a drive to improve right away. I can't recommend Aplomb enough. With our 3 kids busy schedules Gary is always flexible and willing to work with us
A little pricy, but my child loves her private lessons with Sensei Gary. He demonstrates exceptional patience and care with each student.
My daughter has been a part of Aplomb Martial Arts for about a month and absolutely loves it! She talks about it all week, practices, and looks forward to each lesson. Sensei Gary is fantastic and does a great job determining her individual needs through each time in the dojo. She has gained more confidence, while having fun and learning self-control. It has been great to watch as she has ADHD and Dyslexia and Sensei Gary helps her find ways to shine and be confident despite these challenges. I’m extremely grateful and cannot wait to see her continued progress!
My son (41/2) is new to Karate and Gary is so patient yet commands attention and control of body. We love this place!
I joined this dojo in October of 2018, and have looked forward to every class and session I have! This place has an amazing Sensei and is full of wonderful people that all enjoy coming to class and having a blast! If you have ever thought about martial arts or self defense, this is the pace to be!!! 👍🤟
We signed up our daughter in September 2019 and were so impressed with USSD and Sensei Gary that I signed up in November 2019. Sensei Gary (along with the other instructors) are patient, supportive, and extremely knowledgeable. Tuition is not inexpensive, however the value is in the combination of a personal training session each week combined with up to 3 classes a week. Our daughter's confidence, concentration, listening skills and flexibility have all improved in a short amount of time.
A very positive environment and a great form of physical and mental exercise.
I really do need more star to rate USSD, this is a really good martial art for self-defense for kids and adults, my daughter been learning discipline made new friends with the same age and the same purpose, is the only way that she is not with any electronic device and the most important, she learned how to defend her self. Thank You, Sensai Gary
In an era of tech and instant gratification, it seems most of our children suffer from what some call ADD/ADHD. Over 90% of cases can be managed through improved diet, frequent exercise, proper sleep, and self discipline....without big pharma. My son attended a free class at USSD Lenexa and we were hooked! This program provides emphasis and support for all the things listed above, but it does so much more than that. I've seen such an improvement in his energy level, willingness to pitch in and help others, self control/awareness, personal responsibility, etc etc. This is so much more than an extracurricular activity for your kiddo...it becomes part of them, their outlook, and their lifestyle. I've heard some say martial arts is expensive, but when you break down the cost per month and how many hours you spend at the dojo, this is far more reasonable than any after-school sports I've seen. What you learn there lasts a lifetime and can be practiced anywhere, anytime, with anyone. Don't forget the real life application of self defense either. I just wanted to share how pleased we are with our decision to enroll in January. So pleased that I also enrolled several months ago! It's been an awesome bonding experience with my son and kempo has already improved my mental and physical well being drastically. No more going straight from my office chair to my house after work! If you are interested AT ALL, stop by for a free class like we did - no strings attached! No one will pressure you or harass you for months to come. Just an open invitation to try it on for size, but be warned, once you put on a gi you won't want to take it off!
My son gets really excited every time its "Ninja class" time! Sensei Gary is awesome with kids. My son has gained confidence, focus and self-control. What kid doesn't need this?!?
I have been trying for years to find somewhere I enjoy exercising and feel welcome. I've found that at USSD. The environment is safe and welcoming. Sensei Gary is wonderful! He ia great with anyone of any age. I love everything about my experience and am so glad to have found this place!
We love this dojo. Sensei Gary is great with the kids.
I go to this dojo. I am an orange belt and I have learned so much!
USSD Lenexa is great for any age! I started doing tai chi with Sensei Gary just over a year ago. At 56 I had difficulty walking stairs and couldn’t raise my arms higher then my shoulders. Now I can run up stairs and have gained back a lot of the flexibility in both shoulders. Sensei Gary keeps it fun, while still pushing me to reach all my goals.
I am a father, a grandfather, and a Navy veteran. From personal experiences, I learned the importance of mental discipline, physical endurance, self-confidence, and facing personal challenges in my life. I have joined USSD Lenexa 4 months ago and the experience has reinforced all of the above. Sensei Gary is excellent with all ages in reinforcing the principles that encourages what is needed to be successful in the USSD teachings and in one's own life. He does it in a professional, effective, challenging, approachable, and entertaining manner. What I personally like the most is he not only teaches what to do but, most importantly, he teaches why to do it. In summary, I am fully satisfied in my current experience in joining the USSD Lenexa Dojo. Thanks, Sensei Gary.
This place is perfect for our son. The instructor has lots of patience and is teaching the kids great lifetime skills as well as the karate moves themselves. Would recommend this place to everyone!
Fantastic classes, Sensei Gary is awesome with my son and with all the kids, very welcoming environment and lots of fun!
My son and I were hesitant to try Karate again but he ended up loving Sensi Gary and is having a blast. Thanks for being the accepting environment my son needs. Amazing place to learn!
As a 71 year old female I have belonged to a few different gyms and tried many types of exercise. Believe me when I say that Aplomb Martial Arts Lenexa is not a workout. It is FUN with a purpose . I was even able to continue training after a knee replacement. Sensei Gary is very patient and always encouraging. He is especially great with the kids. After 4 1/2 years I just received my third degree brown belt and my goal is a black belt by the time I’m 75. Definitely achievable. The tai chi classes are great for developing balance and stability, great for us older individuals, and the Kempo classes really teach self defense and agility. All ages and levels are welcome so don’t be afraid to give it a try. And the friendships I have made are a bonus. Cathy Quinn-Haynes
My daughter has been taking lessons here for about 1 year and she loves it. She is always excited to go and participate. She has learned quite a bit and made great friends she stays in contact with in between the lessons. Sensei Gary is great and a very good teacher!
I started going to USSD Lenexa and it's the best thing I could have done for my family and myself. In the time I've been there I feel stronger and more confident. Sensei Gary is a great teacher and he makes it fun. I love going there and look forward to the days I get to go.
I absolutely love this place. I only joined late September and the journey has been a blast. After moving to Kansas during the summer, I was looking for a way to form new friendships, find a way to lose weight and develop strength in a fun way, and learn self defense. USSD offers all those aspects and more! I really enjoy the group classes and personal sessions, which really target your progression in the material. The instructors really want to make sure each student is prepared in the material before testing. USSD has really helped me focus on healthy habits coming out of college, especially now that I have an office job. You get to work with the sensei to develop and achieve your goals, which could be strength, cardio, weight loss, self defense, flexibility, fun, and more. Sensei Gary is awesome by the way! And after just a few short months, I can officially say I have achieved my weight goal as of today (Like today that I am posting this review because I literally just checked)! For the first time in my life, I am actually at place where I get to modify my weight goal and keep improving! I am definitely stronger and more confident after such a short time here. The USSD people are awesome to get to know and I am so glad I am here! Come check it out!
I was not sure what to expect when I enrolled my children into karate, but the environment at USSD was so warm and welcoming. The instructors are all so great with my children and leaves them with a smile on their face every time they leave class. It is a great and fun environment to learn self-defense and self control. I would highly recommend this studio to anyone wanting to begin taking karate lessons.
Our son has been a member of this dojo for about 6 months. His progress has been amazing, both in and out of class. Sensei Gary is patient and kind with the kids, and gets to know each of them individually. I can’t recommend this location more!
Doing martial arts has changed my life. USSD Lenexa is an amazing dojo, and the Sensi there is phenomenal. Sensi Gary is so personable and understanding of everyone's needs. The teachings and lessons I have learned have changed my lifestyle and I can see and feel a huge difference in the way I think, feel, and even look. The classes are intense at times, but Sensi Gary also knows how to have fun! He pushes us and makes sure we are always striving for our goals all while having a smile on his face and cracking light-hearted jokes. Every lesson is different! it's never the same thing twice. Kempo, Thai Chi, Weapons training, Sparring, Flexibility and Strength training, and much more are all available at USSD Lenexa. All ages. Group and Private lessons too. The people I've met there now feel like family to me. Everyone is welcoming and so kind. USSD Lenexa is awesome!
My son (4yrs) started recently and it's all he talks about. The sensei is patient with the younger kids, which is awesome, and teaches them about self control. Im sure this will be a very positive learning tool for my son and will set him on the right path for future endeavours.
I started taking private lessons and group classes about 8 weeks and can tell a difference in my personal life and my energy. The instructors are knowledgeable and fun and it's become a second family to me. I enjoy learning and growing with the other students that attend the group lessons.
Excellent . excellent... positive environment
My daughter started lessons last October and eats each one like it's candy. Positive reinforcement, confidence building (and for a kid who is legally blind, being confident enough to protect herself is a BIG DEAL) and so much more. Gary has been an amazing influence and wonderful sensei and even encouraged her to have her birthday party - cake and all - in the dojo! The kiddo has asked me to include that everyone is always supportive and nice.
We learned about United Studios of Self Defense at Maker Faire this year. Last night we tried out our complimentary private lesson and group lesson. My son had a blast! The sensei was fun and so nice. After years of gymnastics only time will tell if my son gives up one passion to follow something new, but I would recommend them to anyone wanting to get into martial arts.
Quality Martial Arts instruction for all ages and skill levels! Since joining last year I've found USSD Lenexa to be a great place to build fitness and strength while practicing Tai Chi and Shaolin Kempo in a safe challenging environment. The group classes are always different and you get a solid workout, and personalized weekly lessons show how much the Instructors are truly invested in your individual growth in and out of the Dojo.
What a great place to train and get in shape all at the same time. Super positive environment, with knowledgeable staff and supportive students that make for a fun and enjoyable place to learn a difficult activity.
My daughter started here in February. She absolutely loves it! Sensei Gary is awesome! He is super encouraging and patient and kind and gives 110% every single class. It has been so fun watching my daughter learn and grow in this art.
Very pleased with the quality of instruction, facilities and fun spirit this studio offers.
Excellent instruction, atmosphere and system.
If you are looking for a great workout, a new hobby to pick up, and an all around fun self defense/martial arts class, then this is the dojo for you! I highly recommend it for anyone! The environment is positive and everyone is very friendly!
I have been going here for 2 months and it is a great place to learn and form friendships. It is a great way to stay in shape and for those looking to advance in Martial Arts, it’s also excellent.

Both of my son's take lessons here. They love leaning Karate and I love the discipline and physical exercise they get from taking lessons multiple times per week. Would recommend to anyone.
Fantastic!! Fun and provides great physical and mental exercise.
Very positive and fun! Gary, his instructor, keeps him moving and is always encouraging. My little guy loves it and continues to grow as an active listener. It’s great exercise for him as well!
Sensei Gary is wonderful with the kids. Engaging and structured. Harper enjoys going to her private and group Lessons. Great place!!!
