I felt gratitude for the opportunity to attend the first Friday of the monty open house. The organizers showed warmth and kindness, making everyone feel welcome and engaged. It was indeed a heartwarming experience to witness a demonstration of their practice, showcasing not only their expertise but also their genuine passion for their practice. The atmosphere was filled with positivity.
a lovely place i’m very grateful to have found. not only is the martial art beautiful but the architecture, history, and ambiance of the overall space makes me feel exceedingly lucky and privileged to be able to train here. highlyyy recommend
Good old-fashioned martial art. If you are the kind of person who is interested in a beautiful, form-based martial art, rather than sparring, you should check this place out.
I highly recommend that anyone who is interested either attend the free first Friday of the month meditation + dharma talks or come watch a practice.
I started studying at this temple almost a year and a half ago because I was interested in learning a more fluid style of sword and I was looking for a good way to make sure I meditated more often. Shim Gum Do ticks both of those boxes.
Since I first arrived everyone has been very welcoming and understanding of restrictions I have due to disabling health conditions. It has been wonderful to have found a safe way to exercise, with others in an environment where I am pushed to try my best, but not pushed past what is safe for me. I've struggled with other sports either prioritising competition/points over an indavidual's wellbeing or lacking a sense of comunity. On the other hand, Shim Gum Do focouses on training both the body and the mind, which I have found to really help in managing my health. The sense of comunity amongst those with whom I practice, has also become an indispensable part of my life.
Their Residency program is great and offers a lot to people who want to grow and learn. Very accepting of everyone regardless of gender or background, and learning to use a sword has been one of the coolest parts of my day here, classes are fun and engaging, and the teachers are very talented and good at teaching martial arts 🧡 highly recommend!
I have been training at the temple for almost 2 years, I have found the perfect union of martial arts and meditation training. There are multiple disciplines to learn and train and a great community that helps each other train!
The most unique and genuine example of a Korean Zen Buddhist temple and practice that you can find in Boston. I highly recommend everyone come check this place out. Free meditation session and dharma talk the first Friday of every month.
This is a very special martial art. It integrates meditation with physical activity. I have been training here for almost two years, now. Prior to joining Shim Gum Do, I had practiced daily sitting meditation for six years at a Zen practice center in St. Louis, Missouri. I did sitting meditation, every day, to relieve compulsive worrying and physical tension from anxiety. Then, when I moved to Boston and found Shim Gum Do, I found a physical discipline that did the same thing, but with the added component of well-being that is obtained through exercise. Shim Gum Do does this by leading you through prescribed forms--sequences of movements with a wooden sword or with your body that are each like a musical piece, transitioning from one movement to another in a clear, flowing way. I find that, after practicing my forms for 45 minutes to an hour, my mental state is completely changed, in much the same way as practicing sitting meditation for 45 minutes to an hour--but with the added benefits of exercise. I would recommend Shim Gum Do to anyone who has an inclination toward meditation--as well as an inner, deep-seated need for physical expression.
