Good people with great Aikido , willing to extended them self to beginners , really glade I found the place , have been training their for years
My 7yo son has been attending kids' classes at Aikido of Park Slope for close to 2 years now. He is working towards his green belt and loves the program. All of the senseis / instructors are incredibly dedicated and very patient and supportive. If you are looking for a unique, not commercialized dojo to practice martial arts yourself or for your kids, look no further. APS is a great, authentic environment focusing on building a true sense of community. We love it here!
Very professional dojo, people are fantastic and training is very enjoyable and first class. Every class is a unique experience.
Why should you try aikido? I dunno, why not? You'll know if you like it when you do it, and it's kind of the rare B-side of sport-meditation these days. Like pottery, or hiking, or boxing....it's worth it just to know what it really is. Just be ready for the sensory experience of touching other people. It's somewhere between wrestling and dance. My own original sensei (coach) retired after COVID. Insert impressive resume here. Hal, the head sensei at AOPS did some cool online stuff at the time and when things cleared up, I got on the mat. Aikido is in a period of consolidation, and Aikido of Park Slope has become a fantastic spot for scooping up the lost souls who have seen their dojos close and sensei's pass or retire. That makes for a diverse experience that allows for accommodations (as in I've been active so long I have a few things I need to avoid, like constant flower flips or wrist locks of death). Hal, Gordon, Clem...all of my teachers so far have been an excellent source of cheerful but serious exploration. They have a flexible mindset in terms of both explanation and execution. I understand why people like highly stylized martial arts. There is a precision that exists in that practice that has its own beauty and rewards. But I prefer my martial arts a little looser these days, just incase I have a new idea or a bad knee. Class size varies, and so does the vibe. Sometime it's thoughtful and intimate, sometimes a high energy well attended party. The dojo itself is expansive, smells mostly good, and has A/C. It's the nicest dojo I've been to in the boroughs of NYC. Side quest: the staff here did an amazing job of training my kid, who graduated to the top kids rank before getting their own life. Watching that lil' fidget bucket sit and breathe, roll and stand tall...it was a great experience. You should try that too.
I’ve been attending here for 10 years and the practice continues to be a source of growth, joy and inspiration.
I’ve been practicing Aikido for over 30 years. The head instructor, Hal Lehrman Sensei, is a student of Yamada Sensei, who is a direct student of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. Training with Lehrman Sensei we have a direct connection to the origins of Aikido. Lehrman Sensei teaches the ease, power, and effectiveness of Aikido, and also its spirit - that of joy, connection, and peace. All the instructors are welcoming and have the great ability to meet each student where they are, whether a beginner or advanced student. It’s a great community to be part of. An incredible, life changing experience for me and, I believe, for anyone who chooses to practice here.
Awesome place to learn, practice and grow within the Aikido community. One of, if not the largest dojo in the Tri-state area. The head instructor/Sensei is one of the top ranking and senior instructors in the country. On top of all of that, the people there are great to work out with and have a good a strong sense of community. It’s always a pleasure to go and train there.
Amazing team. They build children's character, holistically. They genuinely care. They have created a wonderful atmosphere of love, care, strength, and resilience. Highly recommend!
One of the things that makes a metropolis worth living is access to high level of knowledge and experiences. Aikido of Park Slope is one of these embodiments.
I love this place and the people who practice in it
Our family is pretty picky (especially, my husband, who was involved with Martial Art himself and had high standards and demands). The kids were still quite young-6 and 4 years old. But after the first class we began to see the amazing value of the classes at Aikido of Park Slope. I can’t rave enough about the skilled, able, professional, patient and kind aikido instructors at the Dojo (which is beautiful : vast, stylish, clean). They are not only skilled aikido masters themselves, but attentive, humorous, intelligent teachers. I could say they help my husband and I to bring up the kids:) And besides teaching aikido (moves, terminology, public exams, seminars, etc.), the kids play fun physical and mental games, they also learn about interaction with each other, patience and respect. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, but disciplined. Today my kids (13 and 11 years old) are learning the responsibility of being older students -Dojo etiquette requires older students to help the younger, to set an example ( a great tool to build self-respect!). They have been promoted to the level, which allows them to take adult classes. Overall, studying at Akido of Park Slope made them better people (IMHO).
I have practices Aikido for over 3 decades and am always amazed at what Sensei Hal Lehrman brings to the mat. The dojo is his aikido laboratory and we are invited into the experiment. We might try throwing with grabbing on finger instead of your wrist, the next week we may practice with the Jo like it is made from rope. it si a great school for those who want to test the limits of how Aikido works.
A wonderful place to practice. Strong graceful teachers, amiable cooperative student. Safe training environment. If you ever wanted to learn Aikido, the Way of Harmony, or rather the art of not-fighting. This is the place!
Aikido of Park Slope is a superb place to learn for adults and kids, and a kind, harmonious, and respectful place to inhabit. I have the highest respect and appreciation for the dojo, the sensei, and my fellow students. Children are treated as first-class citizens.
Excellent aikido with friendly people. I have been a student here since 2010, and I have learned so much about aikido (and myself) in those years. The students and instructors are friendly and helpful. It has been a truly great experience. In early 2016, we moved to 630 Sackett Street, and the new dojo is beautiful. Practicing in the enormous mat space has been a joy. If you are interested in aikido, this is a great place to begin your practice.
Their new location, at 630 Sackett, is absolutely beautiful! It's a spacious layout with a wonderfully zen feel. I love practicing here!
