My 5 year old recently started jiu jitsu here and everything about it has been incredible. The classes are fun and engaging. The instructors are amazing and my kid is thrilled to go to the dojo multiple times a week.
I took a boxing class at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and had a great time. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the instructors do a good job of teaching the basics of punching and kicking. I liked that we got to pair up with a partner to practice—it made the class more hands-on.
There’s also a 10-minute jump rope session, which is great for building stamina and getting your heart rate up. The students are a mix of skill levels, and everyone is really nice and willing to help if you’re unsure about something. Overall, it’s a great place to train and learn.
Everyone is amazing. Great classes and great environment! Love this place for anyone who really wants to get a good workout while learning the real techniques.
My 9 year old daughter who loves dance went for a trial session. A few minutes after we got home, out of the blue she said "mom, I feel stronger and more powerful." Signed her up that minute. Also, lovely people, trainers and nice facility.
My 6 year old started taking classes in August and already I see a different in how he carries himself and in his self-confidence. Now, my younger son (3yo) has started and he is already taking to it. The instructors are kind, firm, and clear in their directions. Would heartily recommend.
After around 2 months of foundational jiujitsu classes multiple times per week I feel confident in saying that this is the most welcoming, inclusive learning environment I’ve ever been a part of. I’m delighted to be building my jiujitsu practice here.
Truly the real deal. If you have no connection to martial arts or getting fit within that world, you are welcomed with opened arms no matter what your knowledge or skill/fitness level is. From really young to old. You receive incredible, professional training and conditioning toward whatever your goal is. This dojo is an asset to humanity. An incredible find and value.
It’s literally a pleasure to learn mixed martial arts at this place. Coaches are not only extremely skilled at breaking down complex techniques into easy-to-understand concepts, but they also do an exceptional job at creating a welcoming and warm environment. People at the gym are extremely helpful and considerate and they will guide you through (if you are a newbie like me) all the steps to ensure you performing an exercise correctly. No judgment, no you-either-do-it-or-you-are-a-loser mentality. Coming to this place is something to look forward to every day!
I love this place. The instructors are wonderful and the students are kind and welcoming. This is a school for learning and growth, not competition. There are no egos and everyone genuinely wants to help you get better. I'm so lucky to have BBJJ as my local dojo.
Can't say enough good things about this gym. Josh, Oliver and Ms. Heslin are awesome people who care deeply about their students and the community. Started this year at age 46 and they welcomed me with open arms. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
It's been a few months now since our 5-year-old daughter started here. So far, the progress she has made, the confidence she carries and the love and respect she has for the dojo (shoutout to Mr. Leaf!) has far exceeded our expectations. Everybody here is amazing!
Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is welcoming, accommodating, nurturing and supportive. I started taking classes back in May, but being a single parent, I ran into some scheduling issues. I communicated this over text msg (yes, they are super responsive), and they worked with me to find me classes that would work with my schedule and back on track. As a 40-something and with zero prior martial arts experience, I wish I had found this place years ago, but I'm very happy I found it now.
I’ve only been going to Brooklyn BJJ for a few weeks, but I already have improved ten fold from where I started. The energy on the mats is electric. Everyone who shows up to class shows up to have fun and work on there craft.
Amazing place with such a great positive vibe always. I just starting taking lessons with my young son when the quarantine set in, but the online courses have been spectacular as well. Can't recommend BBJJ highly enough.
This place deserves more than five stars!!! It’s a hidden gem!!!! We absolutely love it!! Brought my boys here was one of the best decisions we ever made!!! Our two boys attend karate at dojo, and both of them love going there!! This is our third year with them!! My older one grows into a much more confident person over the three years here. He was super super shy, the first few lessons he would just sit in the middle of the mat, doing nothing, but they were super patience with him, helped him so much. And now he is in black belt club, he knows a lot of the kids there, and doesn’t hide behind me when they talk to him anymore. The instructors are all great!! They are so good at talking/teaching/discipline kids at all ages!! What we love about dojo is it’s not just a facility that teaches kids karate, they really take the time to get to know each one of them, pushed them to gain more strength and confidence!! They make their lesson fun and challenging at the same time! Dojo already became part of our life, and we love seeing the progress our boys has made so far!! I have to do a big shout out to Mr.Leaf!!! He is an amazing person!!! I don’t know what’s his magic. He is always very clam, he talks to kids from tiny tiger lesson to black belt club. I never saw him gets frustrated with kids ( as a mom to two young boys, I get frustrated all the time). When he disciplines, his voice is always firm but warm at the same time ( I need to learn that). This place absolutely needs double thumbs up!!!
This place is amazing. My son takes karate and the instructors are wonderful. Stern but fun and they are teaching my son respect and discipline. I take the kickboxing classes which are also awesome. Killer work out, fun, teachers and senior students are very welcoming and supportive.
My 5-year old grandson who takes karate at BBJ, is gaining ability, both physically and mentally in a most fun class structure!
I couldn’t ask for a better instructor than Mr. Leaf! He teaches students to focus, to concentrate, to respect, self and others.
He packs his 30-minute lessons fully with varied activities. In addition to blocking, kicking, strengthening, conditioning, he plays fun games which foster students’ longer attention span, sharpened reflexes, increased abilities in accomplishing tasks.
All of which nurtures one of the most important ways of being content and contained: self confidence !
We tried other martial arts studios in BK and we found our home here! The amazing instructors create a super positive, motivational environment. They instill the values of discipline yet are sensitive to kid's needs and help them work through any challenges with empathy and understanding. Our son has grown so much and he's incredibly proud of his accomplishments. We love this dojo!!
From the moment I walked in the door I was greeted with a warm welcoming smile and a genuine hello how are you today? The instructors continuously are looking to help with anything they can to make your day better!! The environment is so warm and full of amazing instructors and you are surrounded by loving students who are also looking to help you with your training or in any way they can!! The students on the mat are always smiling and happy!! I truly love coming to this school it has become my second home and the instructors and students are like another family to me!!!
This is the place to be !!!!! Brooklyn BBJ offers all an amazing experience that is fulfilling and life changing. The staff and instructors offer a wealth of martial arts knowledge and care about everyone just as much as they care about themselves. A welcoming safe environment for all, here is a place to train, workout, learn, and grow.
With over 15 years active duty in the United States Marine Core & over 25 years of experience in the Department of Corrections I can say that the self defense classes here are a valuable asset to our local community. They are taught in a safe and friendly manner which promotes positive learning and fun. I highly recommend.
Amazing school and friendly environment! It not only offers great martial arts, but also provides opportunity to get a great workout, make new friends, and build confidence and self esteem. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to get their children involved in martial arts. Everyone has a great attitude and the instructors are excellent with children (and adults) of all ages. You can't go wrong with this place. We consider it our family!
I was fortunate enough to stumble upon this wonderful facility through a credible reference within the martial arts community. Needless to say, from the moment I walked in I knew that this was the place for me! The staff is incredibly friendly, patient and accommodating. There is absolutely no competitive nature or egos here at this facility, instead the people at BBJ have cultivated a wonderful communal vibe that is based around helping everyone advance towards their goals. I’d highly recommend this to anyone!
I love this Dojo. My son and I are learning so much about strength, respect, discipline and the kindness that can come with these crucial traits. Being strong with the ability to be flexible in everyway. The teachers are incredible role models. I am grateful.
No better place to start your BJJ journey. The crew here are ethics centric, self-defense orientated and focus on providing very solid BJJ techniques and practices. They are also an amazing school for people that enjoy kind hearted, friendly and family orientated people. Much love.
Life Changing!!! Martial arts is challenging, will make you look at yourself, will make you a mean green kicking machine but most of all it will humble you to your neighbor, coworker and fellow man. Columbia street emphasizes community, love, non competition and cooperation above all. These are qualities that we all need, in particular in these trying times.
Joining Brooklyn Bbj is the best decision I've made in a very long time. World class instructors and supportive atmosphere that will build your strength, endurance, spirit, and self confidence in addition to fundamental and advanced skills. Membership also includes great Thai boxing classes to compliment your
Bjj training.
The most welcoming and friendliest place you will ever learn a martial art. I was a bit nervous about learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu before stepping into the dojo, but as soon as I did, all my worries went away. They space they have created is very positive and inclusive creating a warm sense of community, making it easy to learn and make friends!
They do an excellent job in making martial arts accessible and will guide you through either Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Thai boxing. I came into Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to learn self defense, as well as gain self confidence. In just under a year they helped me with what I came for and much more. I have a deeper understanding of martial arts and self defense, more self disciplined and confidence, healthier and fitter, and have gained friends for life.
The only place I would ever recommend to anyone. Check it out!
I brought my daughter here for the first time when she was three–the staff are so warm and encouraging, it's a great place for a kid to build self-confidence by learning a skill, and have fun too.
Joining a new jiu jitsu school can be intimidating, particularly for first time practitioners. With the explosion of BJJ in NYC, there are so many schools that promise a welcoming and safe environment to train, where you can focus on fitness and self-defense, and physical and emotional growth. And, if you like, these schools almost always offer competition classes - the sport side of the art. In reality, and probably because the teachers at many of these schools are decorated competitors, the competitive side of the art overwhelms these other promises, resulting in classes that feel competitive and combative, where submissions are celebrated and injuries are the norm.
But at least one school lives up to these promises - BBJJ on Columbia Street. The school teaches BJJ more in the style of a traditional martial art, placing an emphasis on self defense and technique. But make no mistake, this is real Gracie jiu jitsu, taught by truly patient and understanding instructors. And, most importantly for working professionals like me who need to get out of bed in the morning and head to an office, the school is made up of like-minded individuals - no one is there to compete; to dominate their training partners; to send someone home bruised and battered; to win. BBJJ is doing something different in the jiu jitsu community, and it’s worth a look if you really want to make changes in your overall quality of life, while joining what is nothing short of a fun and supportive community.
Brooklyn Brazilian Jui -Jitsu is an awesome martial art school. I have been attending for over 6 months and I'm glad I chose this as my martial school. They have lots of classes available and many different locations you can attend, which makes it very easy to work it in to your schedule. They are welcoming, friendly and there is a great since of comradeship in the schools. Everyone there wants to help you improve your practice, including other, more advanced students. Plus, the highly knowledgeable teachers make sure you are learning what you need to be learning, and take the time to address your problem areas in a patient and effective manner. You should come and see it for yourself.
My daughter went here for awhile (unfortunately not longer, as we moved out of state... but coming for her classes is one of the things we all miss the most about our time in the area) and thoroughly enjoyed it. The teachers were all amazing (honestly, we didn’t meet a single person who wasn’t great), and they were incredibly accommodating of myself and my two very young sons (both infant to toddler age, who loved to watch their sister). They showed endless amounts of patience, kindness and their goals of growing the whole child into strong, reliant, mindful little people really set them apart. What really struck me though, was how aware of what was going on with her in her life they were (as they were with all of the kids in her class), and their ability to help her use all the skills she was learning in the dojo as tools (such as self discipline, persistence, and empathy for others) to help her excel outside the dojo. In short, a great place, which I highly recommend.
This place has a knowledgable, welcoming, friendly staff. And the place has a great ethos! They encourage you to work hard and be supportive of your practice partner. It is fun, invigorating and can instill a new way of thinking. Highly recommend for adults and kids!
Truly exceptional place to learn self-defense for children as well as adults. The instructors are highly skilled yes, but more importantly they create a safe, welcoming community for all. You feel like they really care and they do. What's also amazing is their focus on giving back, sponsoring a nonprofit and collecting donations on their behalf. I have been going to BBJJ for two years now and if not for the environment they create, I would never have tried kickboxing or jiujitsu and pursuing it now.
I began at Brooklyn BJJ a bit reluctantly. Prior to training here my knee was injured by a brown belt at another gym during my very first month of classes. It took me 2.5 years to work up the courage to try and get back on a mat. I'm glad I stumbled across this school. I was blown away by how awesome it is. The school is structured in a way where the students are there to build each other up and not just dominate. You can close your eyes and point to anyone on the mat and they will have a wealth of knowledge to share with you. This environment is only possible due to the incredible staff who are both friendly and insightful. It is because of Brooklyn BJJ I feel confident that I can handle myself in a street self defense situation and I have been able to learn the art of BJJ and Muay Thai without any serious injuries for the past few years.
Having trained all over the US (Seattle, New Orleans, Atlanta), this is one of the best schools I have trained out. The instructors are amazingly patient and talented. I am that student with all the questions. Also, I finally took the the leap and reluctantly took a kickboxing class. I was welcomed and supported as a newcomer to that environment.
The thing that I feel that sets this apart from any other school is the advanced students. They are supportive, patient, and always in teaching mode. I learn something new every class and reinforce some of the techniques. I recommend getting a notebook and writing down everything after class.
It is truly amazing and the workshops they have from time to time are life changing. Yes, that's me with Hoyce Gracie in a seminar hosted by the school.
Hands down the best jiujitsu school I've been to. I've trained @ other academy's, and they didn't have the same structure or emphasis on self improvement. Those schools were meant for situations if you were going to fight a jiujitsu guy & that's it. This team focuses on key details, true mastery of the art & defending yourself in real danger. They teach this in easy to learn and practical training that works with your your level of skill and fitness. I plan on staying and growing with them and becoming a star player on the team.
Changed my life completely, I learned that we don't have to beat each other up to learn how to fight, amazing training atmosphere, awesome people, I am totally hooked
I've been coming here for 2.5 years on and off. BBJJ give me the opportunity to get a work out and learn new things every week. I was skeptical about joining first (woman in her 40s) but the atmosphere and attitude of teachers and students are great for people of all ages.
The staff and instructors couldn't be kinder to me or my ADHD/anxious son, and the program is great- focused on skill-building and also health, respect, responsibility, and anti-bullying. I also truly appreciate that they do not play music during class. The instructors are plenty engaging without it and the kids benefit from not having sensory overload. My son loves it and has fun every time- even if he gets upset, the staff can handle it and they help him calm down and return to class successfully. I only wish they had a location more central to Park Slope :)
I've been coming to this dojo for years now. The teachers, professors and community have always been outstanding in every way. Over the course of the past couple years I've had a great time, learned an incredible amount and made many close friends.
There are only things to be gained by giving BBJJ a shot.
I truly feel lucky to train in the martial arts with Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Columbia Street. The school is immaculately clean. The students are all responsible adults with the intent of progressing through the martial arts while helping one another in the process. Staff members are always available for an answer to a question or to assist in making your training experience safe, fun and informative. The head instructor, Professor Skyer is truly a master of his craft! Excellent school, staff and students-I will train here forever!
I absolutely love this place! I've been practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for almost 6 years. I train at this location as often as possible. Professor Skyer, Mr. Mikuriya, Mr. DeClet, Mr. Leaf and Ms. Tolve (to name a few) are incredible instructors. It's a family-oriented, friendly, safe environment where you learn an amazing martial art. They are all professional and treat you like family. Their meticulous attention to details are to be admired. I love training at this location because I know that every class I take, is well planned; thus walking away with more knowledge than when I walked in. Plus the training is great exercise! Thank you for offering this!! I cannot imagine my life without Jiu Jitsu and without all of you wonderful people. Oss!
You can't beat Brooklyn BJJ for top notch instructors for both adults and kids. Everyone is so nice, the classes are amazing, the atmosphere is really positive and encouraging. I love the Cobble Hill location, right near the waterfront.
I began taking classes at BJJ a few weeks ago. Already, I've seen such an improvement in my overall health. This is a great gym with supportive teachers. You will feel comfortable even if you are just a beginner. Highly recommended!!
I earned an intro lesson and two weeks of training through a charity raffle. I was deeply impressed with the quality of the instruction, the facilities, the patience and friendliness of the instructors, and the overall vibe and dynamic of the school. I would highly recommend Brooklyn BJJ to anybody interested in training in Thai style kickboxing or Brazilian Ju-Jitsu
There is no other martial arts school like BBJJ. I have trained previously at different school (and art form) 20 years ago. I re-entred martial arts at BBJJ middle aged and with some injuries under my belt. Words can't express how superior the training is here. All of the instructors are friendly, incredibly trained and beyond generous with their time and expertise. The classes are in group form and challenging. But I feel like I have personal coaches/trainers who help me work at my fitness level and around whatever physical (or motivational ) challenges arise. Whether you are looking to get in shape and move beyond the average gym experience, or have been along time time lover of martial arts -- BBJJ has so much to offer.
Great place to train for both kids and adults. The staff has a really positive attitude and are all passionate about their work.
The school's philosophy is that people of all ages and physical condition can benefit mentally and physically from martial arts training. Safety is always the primary focus so working adults shouldn't be deterred.
Such an amazing place for families. We love this school. The students and staff are all very friendly and welcoming. They also have a large , clean and well maintained space for kids and adults.
Me and my son have been training with these people for over a decade and love it. I would recommend this school to any one interested in learning the martial arts in a fun safe environment.
This is the best dojo. It doesn't matter what day of the week or what time you arrive they always greet you with a smile. I love the fact they're very concerned about the kids and all the students. The fact they're very involved with the community means a lot and shows that they want the best to make this community grow. Best workout you could ever have is this dojo. Oss
I just took my first ever martial arts class and they worked with me to make sure I got the most out of it. They also worked with my injury concerns. Overall I had a great workout and plan to be back!
Incredible place to train at, Professor Skyer has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to both Jiu-Jitsu and Kickboxing. After every class I took I left feeling confident and in better shape.
All of the staff members here are incredible and truly love what they do. From my time in the lobby waiting for the next classes to start I can say they also run an incredible kids program!
A great atmosphere to train for both adults and children. Amazing staff of instructors who are supportive, knowledgeable and friendly. If you'v ever thought about trying martial arts, this is the place to start!
We've been part of this community for over 4 years and I'm continued to be impressed by the thoughtfulness the team puts into their lessons. My 9 year old and 7 year old are brown belts, and karate is what they live for. Becoming a black belt is part of their core DNA and I couldn't be happy enough to have found such positive teachers and community to influence their growth. I highly recommend without any reservations.
Awesome, positive environment where the outstanding instructors care and motivate their students to be better physically and mentally. Always pushing to work harder and be better--I’ve never worked this hard on myself till I discovered this place!
Our 6 year old has been taking Karate here for the last year, and our experience has been amazing. The teachers are serious yet fun, so while the kids learn discipline as well as martial arts, it never feels like boot-camp. Our son has rather severe ADHD, and we see a complete transformation whenever he is at class or training at home. The number of family night events and parental involvement is outstanding. We cannot recommend this studio and the teachers here highly enough. I would unreservedly encourage anyone even considering enrolling their child in a martial arts to attend BBJJ.
I'm currently a basic student here and the environment is really conducive to learning, practice, and mastery. The teachers here are more than willing to work with you individually to walk you through anything you're having trouble with, and the senior students are very helpful during practice.
if you're an beginner, or a more experience practitioner, I can't recommend this school enough. You will not regret it.
I have been training here for about a year and a half and the experience has been very fulfilling. The staff are very encouraging and help create a community of martial arts practitioners that care about others as much as themselves. The school also helps individuals deal with issues around confidence, leadership, physical ability, and respect. I am very happy that I found this school because I originally trained jiu jitsu in an environment that encouraged raw power over technique. Although I have a long way to go in order to achieve the rank of black belt, I at least feel that I have started to learn how to control myself when training with other individuals.
I have been a student with Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 4 years now, and it has been nothing short of life changing. There is great instruction, awesome martial arts, and best of all a great community.
It has been amazing to work with people of all ages and backgrounds over these last several years. I love helping new people out, because it's giving back the same way that my seniors gave to me.
So yes, five stars. I can't recommend it enough. Come train!!
The staff are all highly skilled, and have created a very safe, yet challenging environment in which to learn martial arts at all levels. The student body is very supportive, welcoming, and committed to growth as individuals, and as a community. An excellent school for practicing skills that will enhance all aspects of your life.
I love every second I spend here. A school that is dedicated to improving the health and well being of students, not a "fight club" kind of place. BBJJ has developed a sound teaching technique that encompasses a mindfulness approach allows for different physical abilities and fitness levels, and helps students set and reach goals. Sound technical training, safe, supportive environment, excellent physical training
I have been coming to Columbia Street for almost two years and all i can say is it just keeps getting better. The instructors and fellow members are nothing short of encouraging, positive, dedicated and amazing people to spend time with.
My training has been on and off at points but, every time i get back into the dojo, I'm welcomed with love and support. You will surprise yourself, once given the chance, how quickly your body becomes stronger and your mind clearer.
If you want to spend a few hours a week working your body and your soul, this is the spot to do exactly that.
