I was in town for the week and decided to drop in for a few of the morning sessions. Grayson (the morning BJJ instructor) was fantastic with his instruction of useful techniques and the facility is incredible. The group of guys I encountered were dedicated, welcoming, and fun to roll with. If I find myself in Chattanooga again, I will be sure to come in again.
I'm writing this the day after I've come back after months of inconsistency. I'm sore all over, and I really missed that feeling and my training partners. This is going to come out as a love letter to the bjj community because I really do owe them a lot, and I can't express my gratitude enough.
When I say Agoge Combatives and BJJ were a game changer for me, I mean that quite literally. I showed up in 2020 at one of the low points in my life when I decided to give jiu-jitsu a try at the recommendation of a friend. My life hasn't been the same since that 5:30am BJJ class, it flipped the script.
I never knew I could feel as confident as I have in this martial art, and that's not because I'm great at it but because I realized that I'm free to be a lifelong student and struggle, that's part of the process. I also have some of the best relationships as a result of being in this community. You'll meet some of the most interesting, gracious, and lovable people on the mats because, as my friend Donavon always says, "You can't hide from yourself out there, and therefore you can't hide yourself from others, they see you like very few people ever will". The friends I've made on the mats and the ones I'm blessed to do life with are the ones who've seen me at my worst and most vulnerable, and they're still there for me. We've also shared a lot of side-spliting laughter, which you feel deeper when you're sore from training, I highly recommend post-training sushi with your group of friends!
I could go on, but I'll make this short. I can never thank God enough for Jiu-jitsu and everything I've been given as a result of training with the folks at Agoge. So come check it out for yourself. If you stick around, I guarantee you'll have a similar story, don't rob yourself of great things, and a wonderful community. P.S. Early Bird class is the best!
I miss my Agoge family. It’s not just a gym. They become your family. They look out for you and inspire you to be better. Just loved Larry’s class. Wish I was there.
My family and I absolutely love Agoge Combatives! The staff and instructors are fantastic people, very knowledgeable and kind. Also very patient with beginners, or anyone wanting to sharpen their skills. We highly recommend Agoge Combatives, for kids and adults wanting to train!
The class schedule is great, early, mid day, and evening classes help me get some training in when work and the kids make it tough.
They don’t have the ego issues here that some gyms have. With so many different styles and high level guys we all get humbled pretty frequently.
Agoge is a great gym for anyone interested in martial arts.
I've been coming here for over a year now, and there's a great mix of experience levels to train with, from beginner to black belt. The selling point that got me was the huge variety of classes and training times to accommodate my busy schedule.
MY son and I started out at other places but after hearing about Agoge Ckm we knew it was one of a kind. They care about you and helping you get better and that's why we are still here 6 years later.
I've been a member of Agoge for over four years. I'm very pleased with how I've developed both technically and physically. The coaches are great and supportive no matter what your goals are or where you are starting from. If you are considering trying out martial arts this is the best place to do it at.
Amazing place to train and stellar community. Coming in as a beginner to any martial arts training it has not only been phenomenal for myself but for my child. Whether you have young children starting school, want to seriously compete, or just want to learn something new, this is the spot.
After having trained at another gym and having a poor experience, my wife and I were invited to try Jiu Jitsu at Agoge Combatives by my friend Grayson Dunn. After only one class, we knew this was the place for us. All of the coaches and other students made us feel like part of the family and have treated us as such ever since. The quality of instruction is par none in the area, probably in the nation. The facility is top notch. The students are awesome and we’ve truly become close with many of them. We feel lucky to have found a place like Agoge to get better every day.
An amazing place to train with amazing instructions in No-Gi BJJ, MMA, Wrestling, Gi, Kravmaga, Kickboxing, kids classes and a Women's Jui Jitsu class. There maybe a self defense type class as well. They add classes too which makes them very appealing and competitive. There is always something to do for the most part. Veteran friendly! Fellow veterans check them out! Solid place to train and all my training partners have been nice and willing to train with me. Love competitions, but not pushy. Chill vibe. I highly recommend it. City Traffic to classes made regular attendance a bit hard for us, but we still think about returning often. We may have found an alternative route to help! 😅😍🙏🏾🙌🏾🎉If you live close or willing to travel, definitely check them out! It's worth it! Glad Agoge is in the Chattanooga area!
This is by far the best all around gym for total self defense training. Whether you are looking to learn how to strike, grapple, shoot, or learn about God, this gym has it.
They have classes for all ages and at more times than I can remember. I’ve been coming here for about 8 years and I don’t have any intention of quitting.
Hands down one of the top martial art gyms in the southeast. Top notch instructors and always a ton of folks to train with. There’s a reason they produce so many successful fighters.
Agoge Combatives - learn a new skill, get fit, and make friends in a community of people who all want to see each person in the gym improve on their skills - from kids to adults. Agoge is more than just a gym, it's a community - Chattanooga's best community.
We gave been there for about 18 months and look forward to every trip to the gym.
Stepping into Agoge has been nothing short of a transformative journey for me since my first encounter in May 2020. Nestled in the heart of Chattanooga, Agoge stands as a beacon of excellence, not just in the realm of physical fitness, but as a hub of community and familial warmth that is often hard to come by. The moment you cross the threshold of Agoge, you're not just another member — you're part of a close-knit family that grows stronger together, both in spirit and muscle.
The coaching staff at Agoge is unparalleled in their expertise, demonstrating a profound dedication to the craft and an infectious passion for sharing their knowledge. They are not just trainers; they are educators in the truest sense, meticulously ensuring that every session is not only challenging but also enlightening. The focus on technique and safety is evident, as they guide members through each movement with a keen eye and a supportive hand, making the complex world of fitness accessible to all.
But what truly sets Agoge apart is the palpable sense of care and respect that permeates every corner of the gym. It's a place where every individual, regardless of their fitness level or background, is greeted with open arms and a genuine smile. The staff doesn't just know your name; they understand your goals, your challenges, and your triumphs. Their commitment to fostering an environment of mutual respect and love is remarkable, creating a space where everyone can thrive and push beyond their limits in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere.
Moreover, Agoge's family-friendly ethos is a testament to their understanding that fitness is a journey best shared. It's a place where families can come together, strengthening their bonds as they strengthen their bodies. This inclusive approach, coupled with the highest standards of teaching and mentorship, underscores Agoge's reputation as not just a gym, but a cornerstone of the Chattanooga community.
In a world where genuine connection and personal growth are invaluable, Agoge stands out as a sanctuary of health, strength, and camaraderie. My journey with them has been life-changing, and I am immensely grateful to be part of a community that radiates such profound respect, love, and dedication. For anyone looking to embark on a fitness journey in Chattanooga, Agoge is not just the best choice — it's the only choice.
I've trained at different gyms in the area, and traveled for work for 4 years dropping into gyms here and there all over the country.
I found Agoge through friends I knew who competed against Agoge members in tournaments. I was incredibly impressed by word of mouth and the technique taught at Agoge.
I decided to give it a visit, and not only was the instruction incredible, but the instructors and members were truly the most welcoming and awesome group I've had the pleasure of training with.
Joining Agoge has been one of the best decision I have ever made, it's not just a martial arts school, it's a community and a family of incredibly helpful people.
I am beyond grateful for Agoge Combatives.
Dropped in for a visit while in town. Went to Tuesday gi class, great instruction and very high level students. Everyone was friendly and the facility was awesome.
Honestly cannot say enough gokd things about agoge, amazing staff, amazing students, and classes available throughout mostly all times, as well as open mat (unguided training/do-what-you-want) on the weekends
As a practitioner of 14+ years, I can tell you: The BJJ here is solid and more importantly, their implementation is on point. This is a group that knows how to train and will inevitably elevate your Jiu-jitsu. I will definitely be dropping in again!
This gym, the coaches and the people are the best you will find anywhere. I enjoy every time that I get train there. Very knowledgeable and willing to help any way that they can.
Great atmosphere to grow and learn. So many classes and knowledgeable coaches. This gym produced a UFC fighter and many competitive fighters. The new strength center is awesome.
We love Agoge!! They have amazing coaches who aren’t just there to be somewhere. They are patient with the kids and make class fun. We would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a safe, professional, friendly gym.
Started my journey at 39. A guy I used to work with was one of the regional fighters and between him and another guy they got me to come try it out. I was mainly worried about the ego of people that would be there. Man, I was way off!
When you walk into the place you can tell they take pride in their facilities! The place is immaculate! The classes are very well structured. Met the instructor and he was super nice and helpful. My 9yo daughter started 2 weeks after I did. The older kids were so kind and helpful to her! Such a great place to have your kids! They were all super helpful and respectful. She is super shy so I was kinda worried she wouldn’t like it, she was hooked! My wife got into it as well and she loves it! There is an all women’s bjj class and I think that is an amazing option for the women that do t feel comfortable training with men.
All in all, this place has been my home for a year now and I really couldn’t imagine training anywhere else. The people and culture is what makes this place stand out! Not to mention we have a UFC fighter here! So if you’re thinking about starting or looking for a place to switch to, come check us out!!

Agoge, the place where a man can become a better man for not only himself but for his family. This place is not just a gym but a community of people of different backgrounds growing together to be the best they can be. Join Agoge, you won’t regret it.
It's home away from home the instructors are top-notch he couldn't ask to be taught by anyone better when it comes to mixed martial arts I highly recommend!
My wife and I switched BJJ gyms to Agoge Combatives in Dec. 2022 and couldn't be happier with our decision.
The level of the Agoge programs is beyond any other gym in the area and it shows in quality of the facility, competition results and the camaraderie fostered at the gym.
If you're in the area and wanting to train BJJ/MMA, there is no reason you should go anywhere else.
As a middle aged, out of shape guy looking to get into BJJ for fun and exercise, I was nervous about coming to a MMA style gym. However, upon recommendation from a couple friends I decided to give it a shot. I am so happy I did!
Everyone at Agoge is very welcoming, friendly and eager to help you out. The instructors are top notch and are awesome teachers, as well as being great people!
I was worried about what I was walking into as there are some pretty toxic gyms out there with guys that just want to crush you, but the culture at Agoge is amazing! I have made many good friends there and I have never felt unsafe.
On the flip side, if you're someone that wants to train hard for MMA, look no further. Some of the most talented fighters in the region come out of this gym and they can definitely help you level up your game!
I liked it so much that I enrolled my son in the children's class and he is loving it as well.
If you can't tell, I love this gym and everyone there! If you're looking for a place to train, don't hesitate to come try it out!
Came down from Alberta Canada for a conference and brought my gear with me. As soon as I walked through the door the guys warming up on the mats were friendly and welcoming. The instructor John was great defiantly walked away with a peace of knowledge. Facility is top end and very clean.
This place is the sweetest, most badass range I’ve ever been to! If you want high quality training in a high quality facility, this it! I’ve been training jiu jitsu with these guys for almost 4 years and they have changed my life for the good! Can’t wait to see what they teach me here!
Awesome facility and management... And the trainers are great with kids to....I recommend Ian Stevens for wrestling...not just the instructional part of it but the mindset he works with them.... it's definitely a 5star company
My son has been taking jiu-jitsu classes and youth combative classes here and has loved them. I’m proud of how much he as learned and how great the instructors are with kids. A very welcoming environment.
Came to checkout the school and wow! Great instructors, great moves, friendly people! If you’re new to the sport or have been doing this for awhile and are looking for a school, look no further. This place is a gem
I have been training BJJ at Agoge Combatives for 2 months now. I love it and recommend it to absolutely everybody. Great workout, good for learning self defense and the people teaching and training out of Agoge are the best.
My kids have been attending Agoge's BJJ classes for about half a year and they love it so much. The teachers are the perfect level of supportive but they also push the kids to be their best selves. Everyone here is so kind and genuine. Thanks Agoge!
Great group of people. We are from Memphis, just in the area for a few days, we went to open mat. Had an absolute BLAST! Thanks for having us! We will be back if we are ever in the area again 🤙🏼❤️
We moved to the area from Phoenix where my son was very active in BJJ. He was nervous to begin training at a new gym and very upset about the move overall.
We have been at Agoge now for six months and I have only wonderful things to say about it. My son immediately felt welcome and at home. It is evident that the coaches truly care for their students and work at each individual student's level to help them to become a better athlete and a better person. My son's skills have grown tremendously and he looks forward to class every day. He has coaches he aspires to be like and teammates who have become friends.
Thank you Agoge for helping our family with this transition; you have been a blessing to our family!
Agoge does an amazing job of creating a culture where people are more excited to grow than to prove how tough they are. Not only does this create much better competitors in the long run, but it allows for an enjoyable learning experience and accepting atmosphere for new students. I cannot recommend it enough as a new(ish) student.
I started my son there in the summer of 2019. A week later I decided to give it a try. Two years later I got my blue belt and have lost 112 pounds and love every second of it! If you’ve thought about training, this is the place to be and it’s only getting better
Let me start by saying five stars is not enough! Ten stars, ten thumbs up, 10/10! To make this brief, Agoge combatives is a family, and im so glad were a part of it! Weve been taking our son since feb. this year, and he started from scratch, zero martial arts experience or training, and with help and motivation from his coaches and teammates, hes come such a long way! From day one he was treated as one of their own. All of the coaches take time everyday to individualize the training for each kid, and adult! Whether you have zero experience or youre very experienced. There is decades and decades of experience and training and knowledge on these mats, and its not just heresy, they wear it around their waist! Its a great place if you want to train, get in shape, gain some confidence, make some friends, anything! No judgement either, just support and motivation. I would and do suggest agoge to almost everyone i see. Its a great way to improve yourself, and honestly, a great way to help improve our community!
I've been a member at Agoge Combatives for over a year now and couldn't be happier here. The facility is clean and large, all of the instructors are wonderful and the gym has a great culture. Everyone is friendly and encouraging. it's a great community that will push you to be the best version of yourself possible. I've visited other gyms in town and this one feels like home. If you're looking for top tier striking or grappling instruction in a welcoming environment you can find it here.
This is more than a gym. It’s a whole welcoming community of people who want to grow along side you.
I’ve trained at several other gyms, and I can confidently say Agoge offers the best value in the area. From facilities, to instructors, and everything in between. Everything is top notch.
See you on the mats!
I can't say enough great things about this gym! Their training caters to all types of athletes and training goals, a variety of classes and coaching styles are available, and the instructors clearly care about helping students meet their individual goals. For the ladies who are wondering (I am often asked): YES, this gym is female-friendly! Classes are mixed gender, and I've never experienced a problem with this in any way.
Highly recommended!! They are truly professional and REALLY CARE about our safety in and out of the gym! They are people of good character that operate with integrity!
Awesome facility, staff is super friendly and full of knowledge. Plenty of good people to spar and train with. You will progress really good in no time.
Started training at Agoge in June of this year with zero prior experience in any grappling or martial art. I had been “interested” in doing something like this for years but always made excuses to not take that first step...and honestly it was fear of the unknown that stopped me all those times before. That first night at Agoge stepping on that mat, I was nervous to say the least. Once we got past warm ups and started training with a partner I was immediately paired with a very experienced “regular” who put me at ease and was super patient and helpful. Then later when it was open mat and we started “rolling” (essentially short periods of time where you grapple with various students in class) I realized this patient, helpful, and welcoming attitude (mixed with a ton of intensity) permeated throughout every individual there. It is truly a family atmosphere. The leadership and instruction is fantastic. The gym is clean, even locker rooms and showers. The women practitioners are tough, knowledgeable, welcoming, and well respected. The younger kids are looked after and have a ton of fun learning a skill that will stay with them for life. My son also trains there and I plan to have my daughter train there when she is old enough (5 is the recommended minimum age). This facility and the people in it receive my absolute highest recommendation. Give it a try, you won’t regret it!
This place is amazing! I started going over a year and a half ago and it’s changed my life in so many great ways. When I started I had no idea, but it checked so many of the boxes I wanted when I looked at starting a workout program:
Will it get me in shape? ✔️
Will it be a lot of fun? ✔️
Will I learn practical ways of defending myself? ✔️
Will I push myself to be better in and out of the gym? ✔️
Will it be a friendly environment/ could I make friends? ✔️
Is this applicable to my everyday life and will the things I learn be transferred outside of the gym? ✔️
Can I enjoy this and learn even though I don’t plan on fighting? ✔️
Can I walk in off the streets knowing nothing and have instructors that can be patient, knowledgeable, and helpful? ✔️
I can’t recommend Agoge Combatives enough. Don’t wait and come on in today!!
My son loves his instructors and has learned so much! This has totally boosted his confidence and he looks forward to getting together with his BJJ buddies every week!
I'm far, far from a Jiu-Jitsu expert, but I have had the opportunity to train at multiple gyms in many states. What I have found out is what's much more important than having the best, most experienced instructors is the overall feel of a BJJ gym - are the people friendly? The instructors helpful and caring? The facility cared for? Wonderfully enough, Agoge/Chatt Krav has it all. Even though the instructors are extremely skilled at what they do, it feels like family - like a home. Students and instructors ask you where you were when you miss classes, we all go and spend time together outside of class, and at tournaments - everyone goes to support each other.
Unfortunately, it's rare to find a place like this. When I came to Chattanooga I searched around quite a bit before I found Agoge. Fortunately, there is a place in Chattanooga that has the whole package, and this is it.
Great instructors!! Welcoming atmosphere. Kids and adults jujitsu classes offered, gi and no-gi, and Krav Maga. They’ve got plenty of class schedules to accommodate busy lifestyles.
Highly recommended. Was in Chattanooga for a week for work and dropped in twice for a class and an open mat. Nice clean facility, high quality instruction, super welcoming and friendly instructors and members. Will definitely be back next time I’m in town. Was a pleasure to train here. Thanks y’all!
With no prior experience, I took trial classes at two other BJJ gyms in the area before ChattKrav/Agoge. After my first day I knew i
I would sign up. Everyone here is friendly, welcoming, and wants to see each other progress and improve in the sport. Stacy, Matt and Sterling are excellent BJJ instructors and Larry is extremely motivating in Krav Maga. If you're interested in BJJ and self-defense but have not yet started...just do it!!
After wrestling for 10 years in middle, high school and college I was itching for some way to grapple and push myself again.. then I found this gym and immediately felt at home. This place is amazing and has some of the best instructors and family atmosphere around! I would highly highly recommend it to anyone in the area interested in Jiu Jitsu or Krav Maga!
I've trained Jiu Jitsu on and off since October of 2008. This Chatt Krav and BJJ is the best place I've trained by far. The instructors and students push me every training session. My jits game has truly changed for the better since I started trainin with these guys. I've also got into the Krav Maga. The instruction is like no other. I highly recommend training here if you want to better your lifestyle and if you want to be prepared for the worst case scenario. Tell them Travis sent you.
Awesome place. Good real world training. Absolutely zero pressure environment. Just show up. Great exercise while learning valuable self defense techniques.
Not happy with how they handle things there. No one talks to you and let's you know what's going on. You are new and in the dark, guessing what to do next. Second... Not one teacher told either of my grandkids their names and they have been 3 times... third.. showed to Friday Not understand everything and with my grandkids whom thought they had class. We sat there for 45 minutes waiting on one person to acknowledge us and no one Not one person asked us why we was there, why my grandkids where dressed for class that's wasn't happening or anything. We walked out and I'm pretty sure we will not be going back. Can't run a business with unfriendly people. But the very first man we met was amazing. What happened to everyone else????
