My son started here a little while back, Jason’s been an awesome instructor, my son loves it💪
A very welcoming gym, it's big enough that you'll usually have plenty of people to spar with, but not so big that the instructor ends up ignoring you. I made many friends from this place.
This place is amazing. Extremely friendly and perfect for all ages.
Great culture at 99HQ. High level instruction with very friendly and fun atmosphere!
We checked out 3 other gyms before coming here. Their couches are great, and very skilled. Multiple coaches to handle a class. Common sense approach to teaching BJJ! Also the most adorable!
Great gym, very laid-back & chill. For new or random drop-ins. Great school for learning jiu-jitsu, staying healthy, and making friends.
I cannot put into words the amazing and unforgettable experience we had at 99 Jiu-Jitsu. My son joined with no experience but thrived both socially and physically after only 1 year. He felt welcome and part of the family from day 1! The kids have FUN while also learning how to respect themselves and others. Coach Jason, Coach Mike and Coach Isaac are GREAT with the kids, they gave every one of them equal amounts of attention and opportunity! 10/10 RUN DON'T WALK to get your kiddos signed up :) bonus they have military discount!
I came in for an open mat today and I had a great time. Everyone was super friendly and respectful, no one was very aggressive and kept the techniques and submissions smooth and classy. They are obviously running a good program and it shows through their students here. I was very happy to be there and I’m excited to go back for more fun. I highly recommend training here, great group of people!
Excellent BJJ Academy! Professor Tellis is a Legend in BJJ for being for being an innovator of techniques (turtle/octopus guard), World Champion (still competes after 2 decades), and has trained numerous World Champions (Cobrinha/Galvao). He and his former business partner of TT Team (Fernando "Terere" Augusto) changed the current tournament scene with new combative BJJ strategies and techniques. Professor Tellis is genuinely sincere and caring to all of the students. Ego's are checked, student's safety is a priority, and the mats are disinfected after every class. Also, you will never know which world champion or soon to be world champion will be rolling on the mats from Mica Galvao to Buchecha. Come try a class out and give his son Jason (manager) a call today! (I have been involved with martial arts for 50 years, Academy owner for 40 years and have trained with Professor Tellis for almost 10 years now).
99 Jiu-Jitsu HQ is friendly and welcoming, highly recommend trying out a class!
World class! A great crew that is extremely welcoming and helpful to beginners like myself.
Not the largest or the most flashy jiu jitsu gym in San Diego but you’d be hard pressed to find a friendlier environment and better quality instruction. Coaches Jason and Mike run an excellent kids’ program and the legend Eduardo Telles teaches general skill improvement and competition classes. Highly recommend!
Great BJJ school! World renowned Professor and top notch instructors, extremely talented competition team, and always a friendly and welcoming training environment. If you are looking to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the San Diego area, I would highly recommend 99!
Amazing gym for the whole family. My son and daughter both attend the kids class. They have learned discipline, sportsmanship, and have really improved with jiu-jitsu. Coach Jason and Coach Mike do a great job.
Super friendly environment, great trainings and teachers
I moved from San Francisco to San Diego in October 2022 and immediately joined 99. They welcomed me in from day 1, and I’ve loved training here ever since! The gym has a nice mix of high intensity competition and relaxed, fun environment. Definitely recommend joining whether you’re experienced or brand new!
I was in the area for work and decided to drop in. Great gym, the Professor was from Brazil and taught a great class. Hope to be back soon!
Great lessons, good vibes, and the place is always clean. I love training Jiu Jitsu at 99 HQ!
This is truly a wonderful, and special place. Everybody is so welcoming, caring, and respectful. The gym is well equipped, clean, and spacious. The coaches are highly respected, and a simple Google search for their names will easily confirm what I am saying. Master Eduardo Telles, and Master Sergio Rios are very accomplished in BJJ, and MMA. They are so humble, caring, and attentive to all their students. I have the highest respect for all the coaches here. I am blessed, and lucky to train at this gym.
A really good environment to learn jiu jitsu also Telles is one of the greatest BJJ practitioners there is in the game
The most chill place to train BJJ in San Diego. All the black belts are welcoming and supportive of the lower belt's journey.
Train with the best, if you want to become your best.
Absolutely awesome Instructors to learn from, and members to train with. Amazingly positive atmosphere to help with the learning process of continuously building on fundamentals. OSS!
Love the place is like family great training great people 🙏🏽🤙🏽OSS
I love this place! I've trained at a few gyms around San Diego. They are all top notch, but none of them felt like this! I was intimidated to try BJJ as I had never grappled before in my life. But, Telles welcomed me into his gym with open arms and his team treated me with respect and kindness. I can't say enough about the training, the people, and the vibe here. Telles is a legend, a fantastic teacher, and on top of that, he genuinely cares about his students! 99 is 100% awesome!
I love training here! I moved to San Diego for jiu jitsu and this is my absolute favorite gym in the area. The vibe is amazing and there are so many great training partners for all kinds of people. Telles is a legend and it's an awesome experience to be able to train with him every day!
Every time we have the opportunity to visit San Diego our first and last stop is 99HQ. We had the opportunity of learning from Prof. Telles, Sergio, and Paulo on this visit. We also had so many high level rolls it was amazing, humbling and exhausting. If your interested in learning Jiu-Jitsu or you're an advanced competitor i highly recommend training here or at least visiting. Thanks Prof. Telles you're the best!
Amazing place to learn Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts. There are amazing professors and it has a great and supportive environment.
I travel around for work and have visited a lot of gyms around the world and this is one of the best that I have been to. The moment I came in, they were extremely welcoming and friendly. The environment is positive and prof Telles took great care in teaching and supporting the students. After class and into comp class, he asked me if there was any questions or things I wanted to learn. I appreciate the time he took to show me his techniques and let me have a q&a session with him
I have traveled from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to train with Professor Telles and his team at 99 Headquarters at least once a year for the past 4 years. I'm now a proud member of Team 99! Every time I've visited 99 HQ it has been a great experience! Professor Telles is an amazing coach and teacher! The facility, people and atmosphere within the club is warm and welcoming. If you're in San Diego and you haven't checked out Professor Telles and Team 99 HQ you're missing out!
This place is home for me. I really love the new location, because it is centrally located in Kearny Mesa. With so many Jiu Jitsu gyms in San Diego, it is really important to find a gym that works for you. 99HQ offers a free week, so you can see if you like the atmosphere. This gym is truly a family for all of us students, so come on by, and give it a try!
Truly one of the best academy's I ever been to. the people are humble and welcoming. Telles is personable and honest AND one of the BEST jiu jitsu practitioners in the states!!! if you don't believe me GOOGLE HIM!
Awesome atmosphere, everyone is super friendly and eager to learn. Professor Telles is hands down the best BJJ instructor I have ever had, with a teaching style that breaks down technique so you can understand it at all levels. I cannot recommend nine nine headquarters enough, whether you want to learn bjj to compete or for self defense nine nine has it all.
We (my kids and I) have taken their classes for 2 years already and we love it! It is clean, professional, and family oriented. The kids love their BJJ instructors and they are over the moon when they actually train with Professor Telles. (You may be fooled by his humble appearance, but if you don't know his BJJ accomplishments, go ahead and google him!!!). They also offer MMA classes for both adults and kids and private classes. 99HQ feels like our second home :))
Telles is a great coach and has helped me dramatically in my Jiu Jitsu game.
I was visiting SD a couple weeks in the summer and decided to check out the martial arts gyms in the area. Open Mat was definitely my favorite stop. Eduardo Telles was extremely welcoming and allowed me to train with him twice without charge. He is a world champion black belt with distinguished lineage and impressed me as one of the most genuinely nice people I've met. The environment was very laid back and helpful, but everyone seemed to be serious about their training. The classes were small, allowing Eduardo to give individual attention to each student. The facilities were great. They have a large mat area enclosed with cage, 3 bags, a small weight lifting area, and a number of showers and bathrooms. I can't speak of the boxing or fitness training programs, as I did not attend those. The Muay Thai program actually moved to another building and as far as I can tell is not affiliated with Open Mat anymore. I'm considering moving to San Diego, and if I do I will be joining Open Mat 99.
Ever since joining this gym , My game has improved through the ceiling and Its been a awesome bjj journey for me..Not only do I enjoy, and love jiu jitsu more It is the best training enviornment for beginners , Experts , family, and Vistitors..I recomend Open mat 99 to all my friends who want to improve their game or just to enjoy having fun !!!! OOsssssss
I was in SD a bit before Christmas on work and I was hoping to get some training in. Telles is someone I've watched compete since I first began jiu jitsu. I felt it was only right that I try and train with him while I was in the area. I always try and get a bit of training in when I travel. It's a great way to pick up some new ideas. This has to be one of the most enjoyable training experiences I've had while on the road. Everyone I met was very friendly, always coming up to say hi when you first enter the gym. Had some really fun technical rolls and a great group of guys and girls to talk shop with. Telles is an amazing coach and overall just a fun guy to train with. I'd highly recommend this gym to anyone. Hopefully I'll be able to make it back some day.
I have been training at Open Mat for about six months, and have loved every minute of it. Eduardo Telles is the real deal -- a world-class jiu jitsu practitioner, and an excellent (and very patient) instructor. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and all skill levels are welcome. I feel very lucky to call this place home. Go Team 99!
I have been training at the gym since it opened, I love the way Telles is as an instructor, & I love the environment, everyone is super friendly and I definitely recommend this gym to all levels of jiujitsu practitioners! Oss
Excellent service and great environment to exercise!!!!
This is one of the best place I ever trained at , I really like the fact that we have 3 showers , and professor Telles is the man !!
The Open Mat is awesome! I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu here and two of my children do as well. Eduardo Telles is a great teacher and is very easy to work with. Telles' talents on the mat have earned the respect of everyone and his relaxed style make classes enjoyable and educational. The other students have really welcomed us and made us part of the BJJ family. They have showers for those of us that train and return to work and the mats are kept clean. It's really fun to train with the folks from all over the world that come to train with Telles.
This place is awesome! you won't see any meatheads with egos trying to kill people at this gym and everyone is super friendly and helpful. The BJJ program is top notch and all classes are taught by World Champion Eduardo Telles. The Muay Thai program is excellent as well, with all classes being taught by Alex Palma. (Alex was voted best Muay Thai coach in North America in 2013.) This is definitely the gym to come train at if you want to take your game to the next level and have fun doing it.
Eduardo Telles and Team Nine-nine open mat has welcomed me with open arms and when it comes to bjjf he gives me the knowledge and confidence to compete at a elevated level.
Love this gym.....friendly & fun people to train with...the jiujitsu instruction is great, as is the boxing and Muay Thai. The showers, mat and all the facilities are really clean. Would recommend Open Mat for anyone looking for a place to train experienced and beginner alike.
Ok but the level of narcissism shows in some of these guys. No shirts under gi. Very unprofessional.
Very friendly and ok in the bigginin. Now we feel so unwelcome or I should say my children are not welcome. My 3 yearl old gets excluded ( picked on) on by the instructor and the classes are a mess, the older kids come during the toddler classe. There's hardly a focus on how to properly training thecnincs etc. We had a different instructor once, and he was amazing and all the children were focus and interested in class. They're were learning proper jui jitsu moves. Unfortunately gotta stay since I pay a year in advance.
